117. When George Harrison Met Pattie Boyd (& Eric Clapton)

We've covered John (and Yoko) and Paul (and Linda). It's time to finally discuss “the Quiet Beatle”—George Harrison. When George Harrison first laid eyes on Pattie Boyd in 1964, there was an instant connection. It was on the set of the Beatles' film ‘Hard Days Night,' where Pattie played a schoolgirl with one line. Off set, Pattie was an ‘it girl' model of the swinging ‘60s London, known for her iconic style. George asked her on a date, she ditched her current beau, and the two began a whirlwind romance. Later that same year, another character came into George's life: the guitar legend Eric Clapton. The two bonded over their love of guitar and soon became best friends. As the years went by, and Pattie and George's relationship struggled, Eric began falling in love with his best friend's wife. Known as one of the strangest, wildest love triangles in rock and roll, hear the story of George, Pattie, and Eric. Next week we'll continue with Eric's side of the story… ***** About Significant LoversSignificant Lovers is a true-love podcast exploring celebrity couples and historic romances. A darkly comic satire about an increasingly deranged leader of a Western power, tensions with Russia and the threat of World War 3 breaking out – sound familiar? That's the premise of Whoops Apocalypse, the 1986 feature film very loosely based on the sitcom of the same name, created by David Renwick and Andrew Marshall. Sadly where the film fails to imitate real life is the presence of a female President in the White House and she's the (relatively) sane one, while her British counterpart (played by Peter Cook) believes unemployment is caused by pixies and is quite happy to encourage those without jobs to leap to their deaths off Beachy Head. The film also features Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H), Richard Wilson, Michael Richards (pre-Seinfeld), Rik Mayall, Alexei Sayle, Ian Richardson, Herbert Lom and John Sessions. Last December for Goon Pod Film Club Tyler spoke to Renwick & Marshall at length about Whoops Apocalypse and how it all came about and he decided to share it with the general Goon Pod listeners as a bonus episode before world events rendered its plot totally tame and entirely plausible. Andrew and David talked warmly about the film and revealed how it was chiefly the lousy scheduling of their earlier television show End Of Part One which compelled them to write the Whoops Apocalypse sitcom, which in turn led to producer Brian Eastman proposing a big-screen repurposing, involving a new storyline and characters. They discussed the writing process, the challenges of casting, the difference between what made critics laugh and audiences laugh and things they wish had worked a little bit better. Goon Pod returns in late March. Goon Pod Film Club can be found here: patreon.com/GoonPod and you can sign up free for a seven day trial. Shows include Kind Hearts & Coronets, A Hard Days Night, Bedazzled (1967), Monty Python & The Holy Grail, Guest House Paradiso (aka the ‘Bottom movie'),Carry On Screaming, Billy Liar and, most recently, It's Trad Dad.

It's one of the more unique and perhaps under-appreciated albums in the Beatles otherworldly catalog: “Beatles For Sale”. Recorded in the eye of the Beatlemania storm, with the making of  what would become “Help” right around the corner, this is one of the few Beatles albums that, to quote TLC's tribute to Zach Braff (NBC's “No Scrubs”), “Beatles For Sale”, sadly gets no love. It's occasionally dismissed as a creative and energy step down from the album which preceded it, “A Hard Days Night”. BY MORONS, AM I RIGHT? Because this is a damn fine album, however exhausted and transitional the boys may have been, and it's long past time it gets an authentic, patented UBP deep dish. Hold the sausage, it's almost Meat Free Monday, you jagbag! In addition to dishing Dylan, The Beatles, and the age old political battle of mono vs. stereo, the Now On Sale Two also ponder:

A special Christmas bonus edition! As part of Goon Pod Film Club - www.patreon.com/GoonPod - every month Tyler and a special guest discuss a British comedy film and in August this year Tim Worthington came to talk about his favourite: Billy Liar from 1963. Here's the full episode for Goon Pod listeners to get a taste. As you'd expect from Tim the conversation takes many twists and turns – as well as analysing the film itself, its themes and ideas, its stars, its production, its position in the pantheon of British New Wave cinema, there are also nods aplenty towards popular culture connected with the film, including Ken Russell, the Four Yorkshiremen sketch and Saint Etienne! Tom Courtenay is the titular Billy Liar, or, more accurately, William Fisher, a grammar school boy on a scholarship from a working class environment who finds himself constantly at odds with distant parents, girlfriends expecting greater commitment, a mocking colleague and a rather foolish boss. He is a provincial dreamer with aspirations to better himself but is somewhat lacking the drive. Prone to lapsing into fantasies in which he is a big wheel in a fictional state called Ambrosia, Billy's doing a job he hates working as a clerk in a funeral directors firm. However, he almost finds a way out of it all,  a chance to escape and spread his wings and soar, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shake off the cloying ordinariness of his Northern town and leave it all behind. Other films covered on GPFC this year include A Hard Days Night, Carry On Screaming and Guest House Paradiso! For a free 7-day trial of Goon Pod Film Club head over to patreon.com/GoonPod

The movie captures the band at the height of their career!  Not many bands can say they have it all on film exactly what they were going through. We start off with a timeline for 1964; a busy time for the Beatles and go up to the release of the movie. Then we talk about the making of the movie, how the name came about, cast members, different scenes and also the UK soundtrack & the US soundtrack for the movie.

It's October 1984 and Paul McCartney has begun his press tour to promote the upcoming release of GIVE MY REGARDS TO BROADSTREET. Nerves were abound, as this was Macca's theatrical screenwriting debut, and initial reactions seem to be mixed at best - judged perhaps unfairly to the beloved Beatles films A Hard Days Night and Help!. With nostalgia twinkling in the eyes of fans and knives being sharpened on the part of critics, it was bold of Paul to invite a conga line of film reviewers to an interview session at the Plaza Hotel. Luckily, McCartney's music seemed to never be in question... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Girl power takes over this week on MTMUG, and we had our friend Courtney Barriger over to watch Spice World (1997). This camp classic Hard Days Night take on the 90s girl group phenomenon "The Spice Girls" took us all back. Ginger, Scary, Baby, Sporty, and Posh. We love all of these empowered women, and their movie is an out of control good time. Name another film that has an alien encounter, a high octane speed boat chase, boot camp choreography, a fashion montage, and live child birth scene! And don't worry, we get into the famous double decker Spice Bus, that looks as spacious as the TARDIS from Dr. Who. Don't believe anyone who says this is bad, it's a blast filled with unexpectedly solid comedic performances. (Seriously, we didn't remember Victoria Beckham getting the most laughs here) You might have to dig through your old VHS collection to get ahold of this one. Book Vs. Movie: Yellow SubmarineThe Beatles Classic Animated Psychedelic TripIn 1968, The Beatles were the biggest band in the world and were eager to finish their United Artists deal (the company that produced A Hard Days Night and Help!) with a film that would uplift their audience (which included kids and adults) and take the animation world to a new level beyond Disney and stop-action holiday specials. Yellow Submarine took a hodgepodge of Beatles classics, new numbers, filler tunes, and a “flower power" mindset to cement their reputations as daring creators. There is simply no easy way to describe the impact the “Fab Four” had on world culture in the 1960s in one show. However, we thought that expanding the idea of a “book” to an iconic song and how they showed their art in a whole new format was as interesting and an adaptation as we could unpack. The story of the residents of Pepperland who are under attack by the Blue Meanies and subsequently rescued by Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearst Club Band (n their yellow submarine) is weird and funny. Directed by Canadian George Dunning and written by Lee Minoff and Erich Segal (of future Love Story fame) it features just a few moments of the lads of Liverpool at the end (thus fulfilling their contract) and is chock full of songs that will make you sing and hum and feel wonderful. It's now considered a classic in animation, but is it any good? Ever want to see the Foo Fighters in a horror movie? To bad you're getting one anyway. (1:59) - Intro(4:45) - Trailer(7:41) - Synopsis(8:52) - Review(21:04) - Spoilers(53:01) - Make It Better Artwork by Dustin Goebel @dgoebel on Insta Synopsis Studio 666, starring the Foo Fighters, tells the story of the band recording it's 10th album in a haunted mansion. Decades earlier the mansion was the site of an infamous rock band murder suicide. Sloooooooowly as the plot unfolds, it's revealed that there is a connection to a more sinister influence and Dave Grohl becomes the pawn in a demon's attempt at opening a portal to hell. https://youtu.be/UEDkqOBhPis Review of Studio 666 This is what you get if you combine A Hard Days Night with a Charles Band movie and give it more budget than it deserves.  In terms of movie making craft, this is a pretty shitty movie. The pacing is awful. The 1:50 run time could have been cut down to 70 minutes and lose absolutely nothing. The direction is extremely flat. I've seen industrial safety education videos with more creativity. If you are looking for gore, it is here, and there are some genuinely cool death scenes, but you're going to have to wait for about an hour and 30 minutes for the actual horror part of the horror movie to start. It's not all bad. In fact this is a very fun movie with a lot of moments that I really liked. I mentioned The Beatles A Hard Days Night, because I do think it's an apt comparison. In both movies, they are really carried by the charm and humor of the band itself. These are not professional actors, but their goofy hammy acting is endearing and fun to watch. Is this a movie that you should rush to see in theaters? No, definitely not. But if you want to watch an oddity and have a few laughs, you could do worse than Studio 666. Score 4/10 Studio 666 Add it to your collection or rent it now.Click here to buy Get 13% Off your order at NightChannels.com when you use code HMT at checkout.

A crisis is a turning point, Forcing me to decide, What is most important to me, And who I am deep inside. Oh, Shoot! I used the Natasha chart instead of today's transits!! Sorry about that, but I'm not going to do the whole thing over either. I will catch up next week. Sorry, Natasha! Alright, Everybody! One addition to this rather lengthy Pele Report is the phenomena of Mars trining Pluto and Venus squaring Pluto both simultaneously! Pluto, the force of evolution, is actually the go-between for the Mars/Neptune opposition and is calling for more discipline and putting more controls on us by the minute. While this can cause us to feel powerless, it can also be the pressure we need to take a stand and assert our true desires. The 3/4 Venus square indicates a "becoming conscious" of our need to be true to ourselves within our relationships, not be bullied or controlled, even if it means moving on from that (or those) relationships. With this New Moon, now is a perfect time to make some profound, positive changes in our lives that may be difficult for us now but which we will be very grateful for in the future. The more we trust our intuitive guidance and use discernment in all our dealings, the easier it will be to make these positive changes. Go for it! 1. I have to thank Daisy Moon for that thumbnail! It is her illustration for Virgo that will appear in my forthcoming book "What Is Love!" Stay tuned for details on the book and to see more of her amazing artwork! https://www.instagram.com/myjournalofdreams_/ 2. Of course, the song for this week is Eric Clapton's newly released, "This Has Gotta Stop!" https://youtu.be/dNt4NIQ7FTA 3. I mentioned a Hard Days Night in the report because Virgo can feel like sometimes. Hopefully, you "get home" to somebody! https://youtu.be/Yjyj8qnqkYI

Hey Everyone! This week, we're bringing you the second of three "Podcast in Death Outtakes" Episodes! If you listen to this show for any length of time, you know that we are all HUGE fangirls, whether it is for this particular series, or other fandoms, and we fangirl a LOT on this show. So, this episode, you will hear all the times we fangirled, but all of it got cut out. First, a discussion of bad Fancasting picks (FYI, just because the book series is 25 years old, doesn't mean the characters have aged 25 years, so it doesn't make sense to cast someone in their forties for Peabody), bad fandoms (fighting among fandoms is typical and full of crazy people.) and bad fan fiction (please don't write fan fic with sexual encounters between Roarke and other male characters from the "In Death" series...). We also discuss the "Mortified" podcast, and their hilarious Harry Potter Fan Fiction Episode. During the Fancasting episode, AJ told a story of going to a ComiCon a few years ago and going to see the "Riverdale" panel with some friends. It was slightly weird that they were fangirling over Cole Sprouse, but, some good photos came out of that ComiCon... AJ also shares an unpopular opinion about Jason Momoa. Next we talk about comfort reads. AJ reads mostly romance novels because they are her comfort reads. We all feel like you should read what you enjoy, no matter what it is. Taking book suggestions from other people is fine, but don't feel obligated to read them if you aren't enjoying it. Jen and Tara discuss "Hunger Games," and how Jen enjoyed the books, but Tara had mixed feelings about them. We also talk about Harry Potter fandom, and if you are a Harry Potter fan and haven't yet listened to "Basic Snitches,"  you should. Next we talk about how awful some men in fandoms are. Just a hint to guys in fandoms: women don't need their fandoms "mansplained" to them. If a woman directly asks you a question or asks for your opinion, please do answer, but if you are not directly asked for your opinion, please try to say as little as possible. We say this fully knowing that AJ has a problem keeping her own opinions to herself, so... AJ gives everyone an internet "pro tip" about the Wayback Machine from Archive.org. You can use this tool to find archives of just about any website that has ever been on the internet. AJ demonstrates this by showing Jen and Tara an archive of her now defunct website for Dougray Scott. Next we talk about how, just like Peabody, where she thinks about how she would really like to be very into the kind of stuff Charles is into, but she is not, we are also not into stuff like opera or concerts in the park. Then we talk about going to concerts and Jen talks about how she has seen Harry Connick Jr. in concert 8 times. Tara has seen "Hard Days Night," a Beatles tribute band group 6 times, and she actually snuck out of her own Jr. Banquet to see "Rain," another Beatles tribute band. The only band that AJ has seen that many times is a little known celtic rock band called "Brother." We end the episode with a little fangirling over Susan Ericksen.
