On the morning of April 30, the Spanish website Diario Red and the television channel Canal Red began to release a series of leaked audio recordings between powerful right-wing figures in the Americas. They called it HondurasGate.By May 6, the outlets had released a total of 37 WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram messages. What they reveal is a shocking network pushing undermine leftist leaders in the region. It's one of the biggest political scandals in the Americas in years… and it implicates the Trump administration, Israel, Argentina's libertarian president, a load of right-wing Honduran officials in underhanded activities to take down political opponents… with thousands of dollars funneled into a right-wing propaganda outlet, allegedly located in the United States. The messages have been independently verified twice, confirming that they are not AI-generated.And you have likely heard little, if nothing, about them.Today, host Michael Fox walks you through the leaks. It’s a dizzying set of allegations. A trove of leaked voice notes and call recordings — published by the anonymous outlet Hondurasgate.ch and Spain’s Canal RED — allege that Israeli money helped secure US President Donald Trump’s pardon of former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández, who was serving 45 years in a US prison for trafficking some 400 tons of cocaine. The recordings point to an alleged plot involving Trump, Netanyahu and Argentina’s President Javier Milei to return Hernández to power and destabilise the left-wing governments of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. But how do we know whether allegations on an unattributed website are true? And does it even matter if they are? David Adler, co-general coordinator of the Progressive International and an expert in Latin American politics, joins Richard Hames to dig into the story, explain its imperial backstory, and what it means to live in an age where claims arrive faster than we can verify them. Do Your Own Research is a show from Novara Media about the systems that make the modern world possible. Music by Iglooghost.

We hear from a journalist in eastern DR Congo on how situation is becoming more and more difficult for people in the city of Goma, a major transport hub - and we speak to Tom Frieden, a leading US scientist involved in fighting the last major Ebola outbreak. Also on the programme: An interview with former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernandez, pardoned by Donald Trump, now in hiding in the US. We have a rare report from inside Afghanistan. And an age-old mystery at sea has been solved - we hear how biologists rumbled the whale.(Photo: UNICEF staff receive medical supplies from an aircraft in Ituri province, Democratic Republic of Congo, May 19, 2026. In this episode, I am back in Santa Bárbara, Honduras, to sit down with Benjamín Paz. Benjamín is a key collaborator in our Biofilia Project, an initiative focused on improving coffee production through biological techniques that restore the natural balance of the environment. We discuss Benjamín's decision to transition his entire farm to the Biofilia system, moving away from the traditional reliance on synthetic NPK fertilizers and fungicides. This shift was inspired by the need for long-term sustainability and the success of similar regenerative practices seen in other world-class farms. Benjamín shares the early results of this transition, noting that while some sun-exposed varieties have struggled with coffee leaf rust, others like Parainema and Geisha have shown incredible resilience and immediate improvements in cup quality. We emphasize that this is a holistic process requiring a "mental shift" and the reintroduction of shade trees to protect the plants and soil. Looking ahead, the goal is to replicate these results across more farms in the region. Benjamín is planning to host workshops for other producers to demonstrate how reducing chemical dependency can lower production costs and secure the future of Honduran coffee. Music by my uncle Jens Wendelboe.

In this series, we're exploring how regenerative management practices influence coffee quality. In this episode, Lee Safar and Lucia tackle one of the most contested questions in coffee: what is “quality coffee”?Lucia breaks down the technical definition, covering physical quality, biochemical composition, and sensory characteristics, but quickly moves into the deeper issue: quality is not a universal standard. This conversation explores how different stakeholders across the supply chain define quality differently, from farmers and exporters to roasters and consumers, and how these definitions often conflict. We also examine the emergence of the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) and the growing push to include intrinsic value, who grew the coffee, how it was produced, and the story behind it, as part of quality. The discussion challenges the idea that cup score alone defines quality and highlights the imbalance of power in how quality standards are set and imposed on producers.Ultimately, this episode reframes quality as something contextual, subjective, and deeply connected to both human and ecological systems.Contact Lucia Reid here:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lucy-maria-reid-103/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reidsramblesnroasts/ If you found this episode valuable, make sure you're subscribed to the podcast and follow along for the rest of this 5-part series. First up this week, we welcome back to the program journalist José Luis Granados Ceja to talk about the Greater America plan, and Operation Total Extermination, the latest US policy initiatives for Latin America. José Luis highlights media complicity in framing US relations with the Global South, how Mexico and its allies in the region are responding to these military threats and how the war in Iran is affecting this political landscape. Next up, journalist and organizer Edith Romero talks about corporate colonialism in Honduras, and how the likes of Peter Thiel are piggy-backing on decades of imperialist extraction to create their own sovereign nations not subject to any Honduran oversight or accountability, and how this connects to the oppressive surveillance and anti-human eugenicist manifestations of AI here in the US and globally. José Luis Granados Ceja is an experienced journalist based in Mexico City, co-host of the Canal Once public affairs television program Sin Muros, as well as Soberana: The Mexican Politics Podcast. He covers Latin America for DropSite News, and has worked as a writer, editor, photographer, correspondent, radio host, TV producer, and as on-camera analyst, with a particular focus on social movements and labor unions throughout Latin America. Hour 1 opens with headlines surrounding escalating tensions involving Donald Trump and Iran before shifting to the sudden resignation of Eric Swalwell amid serious misconduct allegations and renewed scrutiny over past controversies. The Marc Cox Soapbox then tackles the political clash between Trump and Pope Leo XIV, arguing media coverage and church criticism may be aimed at dividing Catholic voters ahead of upcoming elections. “Kim on a Whim” explores Colorado becoming the first state to limit arrests based solely on color-metric drug tests, raising concerns about false positives and potential impacts on Missouri and Illinois policing. The hour closes with a Kirksville case involving a Honduran national accused of rape, prompting discussion about cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and broader immigration enforcement policy. The show opens with rising geopolitical tension as U.S. pressure on Iran intensifies, centered on efforts to disrupt oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz and force negotiations while impacting global energy markets. Domestic political fallout quickly follows, with Eric Swalwell's resignation dominating early discussion amid misconduct allegations and renewed scrutiny of his past controversies. The program also examines a Kirksville, Missouri case involving a Honduran national accused of rape and held under an ICE detainer, fueling broader debate over immigration enforcement and federal cooperation. Hour-by-hour, the show expands into economic and policy disputes, including gas price margin debates and claims about refinery pricing lag versus crude oil fluctuations. Legal and constitutional issues take center stage in Hour 3, featuring Vice President Vance's remarks on Iran, ongoing Second Amendment battles tied to Virginia gun legislation and DOJ pressure, and a Supreme Court case questioning whether ballots can be counted after Election Day. The final hour brings both international and local convergence: continued Iran blockade implications, Supreme Court voting law debate, and a closing personal story about an O'Fallon neighbor complaint over camper parking that escalates into a police visit and discussion of petty ordinance enforcement and HOA-style disputes. On this episode of Eat Drink Smoke Happy Hour, Tony Katz and Fingers Malloy pour Two James Spirits Johnny Smoking Gun, a Detroit-made whiskey that immediately sends them down the rabbit hole. Infused with Japanese tea and built to pair with rich, savory broths, this is not your standard bourbon-night pour. The guys break down the strange smoky nose, the herbal and buttery notes on the palate, the almost impossible-to-categorize flavor profile, and whether a bottle this weird and this interesting deserves a place in the liquor cabinet. They also keep smoking the Camacho Corojo Toro, a pepper-forward Honduran cigar with wood, a little sweetness, and enough balance to make it an easy yes for the humidor at under ten bucks a stick. Along the way, they get into airline chaos, long delays, TSA headaches, United’s new sofa-bed seating idea, whether Trader Joe’s really is the best place to work in America, and why some bottles are worth buying simply because they turn into a whole conversation. The consequences of U.S. border policies through the experiences of Honduran migrants. Hondurans have been at the heart of some of the most visible migration phenomena in the last few years, as well as the direct target of anti-immigrant rhetoric and policy. In Leave If You Can: Migration and Violence in Bordered Worlds (U California Press, 2026) Amelia Frank-Vitale offers a detailed portrait of the Honduran exodus and what it reveals about the broader consequences of changing US border enforcement policies. She highlights the stories of those who are often presented as unsympathetic: deported young men implicitly associated with the very violence they are trying to flee. In the process, she challenges underlying assumptions frequently held by policy makers and humanitarian agencies. Connecting overlapping regimes of mobility control, from the invisible gangland borders within San Pedro Sula to the growing expansiveness of the U.S. border's reach, this book shows how deportation does not deter migration but, in fact, keeps people moving, and how U.S. policies fuel the migration "crisis" they claim to address. Drawing from her own experiences accompanying migrant caravans over many years, Frank-Vitale also explores how caravans emerge as both protest movement and migration tactic in response to this expanding border regime. But in reality, the futures market is influenced by a far more complex mix of factors, including speculation, algorithmic trading, index funds, and macroeconomic positioning across commodities.Carley breaks down the relationship between fundamentals and speculation, explaining how these forces interact and why they can at times appear completely disconnected from what farmers, exporters, and roasters are experiencing on the ground. This episode also explores why hedging feels inaccessible to much of the coffee industry, how the futures market is designed to function, and why it often fails to serve the needs of smaller stakeholders. If you've ever questioned whether the C-Market reflects reality or is something happening around the coffee industry rather than for it, this conversation will give you a clearer framework for understanding how it actually works.Connect with Carley Garner and DeCarley Trading:https://www.decarleytrading.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/carleygarner/https://www.instagram.com/decarleytrading/***************************************About Map It Forward The Daily Coffee Pro is produced by Map It Forward, supporting coffee professionals globally across the supply chain.Website: https://mapitforward.coffeeMailing list: https://mapitforward.coffee/mailinglistPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/mapitforwardInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mapitforward.coffee/Contact: support@mapitforward.org
In Lionel Shriver's new novel, a family with a large and lovely house in Brooklyn invite a Honduran asylum seeker to come and live with them. The young woman is pleasant and helpful. But the adult son of the family – unemployed, idle, and disagreeable – is deeply opposed to her presence in his home. This being a Lionel Shriver novel, the drama soon goes in an unexpected direction. 'A Better Life' is a novel about immigration, gender, and political polarisation – all topics we discuss today. Lionel is the author of nineteen novels, winner of the Orange Prize for Fiction for the massive bestseller 'We Need to Talk About Kevin', and a columnist at the Spectator Magazine. Hosted on Acast. This week marks the 10-year anniversary of the hired hit that took Berta Cáceres’s life and robbed both the Honduran and global environmental movements of a uniquely effective leader. Cáceres was targeted by a dam company, with an assist from the police, military, government officials and international banks because of her effective organizing on behalf of her people, the Lenca. Nina Lakhani literally wrote the book on Cáceres’s killing, and in this episode she walks us through what happened then, what’s happening now, the role the U.S. played in all of it, and what Americans can learn from the way Honduran activists continue to show up in the face of violent repression. Liz Oyer joins Joanna Coles to expose what she calls Donald Trump's “pardon economy”—a system that has transformed presidential mercy into something transactional and lucrative. Oyer, the former pardon attorney under Joe Biden, walks through the eye-popping cases: reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley freed after serving just 18 months; crypto titan Changpeng “CZ” Zhao pardoned after brokering billions into the Trump family's crypto venture; electric truck founder Trevor Milton absolved before paying back investors; and even former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández released despite a 45-year sentence for massive cocaine trafficking. Along the way, they examine the erased restitution—over a billion dollars owed to victims—golf-course clemency pitches, surprise NFL pardons, and the political fallout inside Trump's own Justice Department. If pardons are, as one scholar puts it, an X-ray into a president's soul, what does this one reveal about Trump's second term—and who benefits next?
