Ben Brooks Dutton is the Sunday Times Best selling author of Its Not Raining Daddy It's Happy, award winning blogger of Life As A Widower and chair of the Life Matters Task force for bereaved families in the UK. Ben’s story is one which ignited the hearts of this nation back November 2012, when his exquisite wife Desreen, mother to their 2 year old son, was killed by a speeding car whilst they were walking home together from a perfect, blissfully happy Saturday afternoon with best friends. It was an event of such inexplicable tragedy, that it could feel hard to come to terms with a world in which something so randomly obliterative could happen. Ben’s story is one which pushes the vessel of our human capacity to hold and endure the shock, agony, acceptance and recovery from loss to its limits- consequently, what his story reveals, is one of the most courageous stories of grief I have been privileged to hear. His story is not only one of his own courage to “live fiercely” alongside his grief, but his story, also leads us to that of his gorgeous, brilliant son Jackson, who lost the person he loved most before had the language to express it. Within a couple of months of Desreens passing, Ben got to work, putting his story to the service of others through his hugely popular blog which was followed and read by millions of people all over the world. As we are in conversation, it is almost 8 years to the day that Desreen was killed. In Ben's words, in these more recent times, he has had to ‘start turning away from death, and back towards life’. So, if the world is feeling like a dark or difficult place, join us, and let your heart be ignited by the fire of the human spirit. Getting clean and sober can be stressful. We try to do everything possible to help people going through recovery deal with stress. It's scientifically proven that exercise will help reduce stress levels. This is why we can't emphasize the importance of exercise enough in the process of getting clean and sober. Today’s episode is about exercise and why it is important to incorporate into your journey. Tom and Ben will be discussing this important topic along with the benefits of exercising throughout the recovery process and how exercise can affect your overall physical and mental well being. It can even have an effect on heart health and inflammatory issues. Show Notes [02:23] Stress reduction. Exercise is a natural stress reducer. It naturally correlates with the chemicals in your brain. It also gives you an opportunity to take your mind off of whatever you've been thinking about for the day. [03:42] Getting clean and sober can be stressful. There are a lot of things that you aren't used to doing that you now have to do while you're sober. [04:20] There is even research out there that shows stress can cause heart and inflammatory issues. [04:50] Exercise also incorporates into time management. Going to the gym right after work gives you an opportunity to step away from the stressors of the day. [05:46] If you exercise, you get better sleep. Most people in recovery are prescribed some type of sleep aid. It's hard to fall asleep when you first begin recovery. [06:52] It's extremely beneficial to wean off of the sleep meds, and exercise can help you do this. [09:57] Seroquel is an antipsychotic used for sleep. It makes you tired and makes you sleep. Tom became dependent on it. [11:29] Tom has to do something exercise-related during the day even if it's just going for some walks. It definitely helps him sleep. [12:15] In Ben's opinion, sleep medication helps maintain the addicts behavior and mentality. [13:11] While we're sleeping our bodies rejuvenate and repair themselves. [13:51] Improves mood. Exercising actually improves your mood. Exercise helps with the depression and anxiety that people in recovery frequently have. [15:45] We just built a gym and run our clients through a workout routine. We ask them to pay attention to their mood before and after the exercise. We frequently see people walk out of the exercise session with a smile on their face. [17:32] Opiates release endorphins. A runner's high is similar to the endorphins from opiates. It's the same chemicals on the brain. [19:48] Most people who get regular exercise aren't depressed. [20:10] CrossFit or something with a community workout gives people a sense of accomplishment. [21:15] We find exercises that we can modify for all of our clients. [22:06] Increase of energy. Energy capital. Even though exercising expends energy, by exercising you end up with more energy throughout the day. [24:05] Coffee and energy drinks are not the only way to energize. [25:26] If you work out you sleep better, if you sleep better you have more energy. It all comes full circle. [26:01] Exercise gives you a stronger immune system. It's important to have a strong immune system during recovery, because you don't want to get sick. [27:20] Exercise can help push out the last of the detox process. [28:49] Pot is fat soluble and can store in your fat cells. [30:07] Exercising as a whole will help with relapse prevention. [30:24] It's a challenge, it gives you purpose, it's something you enjoy, you sleep better and feel better. [30:59] Also add good nutrition and have a sense of community or a 12-step program, and you will be setting yourself up for success. [31:44] Tom just competed in a US powerlifting competition. [32:29] A big part of recovery is fellowship. [35:12] We have seen exercise work time and time again. It helps with mood and everything else. [35:47] This is why we incorporate exercise into our programs. We give people the tools they need and coach them through the workouts. Im a big believer in creating a bullet proof mind through shear hard work, getting uncomfortable and also Meditation. I want to get more people meditating, especially younger people. My goal is to remove the stigma behind it and get it out there. Its not just a small beneficial practice that might help some people - its a real life changing practice that effects endless areas of your life and with so many people suffering now mentally we need to do something and take action to prevent it getting worse. From my perspective it helped me as an athlete to progress way further than I initially thought id go and for other athletes out there - it would absolutely do the same for them too. Meditation is a must. Many give up early with it because its ‘too hard’ or they ‘cant quieten their minds’. But this has to be overcome. Malcolm Cox

In the wake of the killing of George Floyd, many of my friends gave me reading recommendations. The book I want to talk about today is one of those. Why this book? I picked this book amongst the many recommended partly because it's about the British black experience. I am also reading a book called "Reconstructing the Gospel: Finding freedom from slaveholder religion" by Jonathan Wilson-Hartsgrove. It is a fascinating and deeply moving book about the consequences of slavery in United States. I will record a review of that book in due course. Understanding the black American perspective is helpful, but I felt the need for a British perspective on the British experience. Hence I prioritised Ben Lindsay's book. What Is the book about? In Ben's own words from the introduction: "Christians should be both angry about racial discrimination, particularly in the UK Church, and courageous in wanting to change the situation. I’m hopeful that the UK Church can truly represent the glorious picture painted in Revelation 7.9, where ‘every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages’ will worship Jesus. For that to happen, the UK Church will need to examine itself; it will need ‘to move into the river of the black experience’. We need to open the discussion and start talking about the black experience within a church context. The Church has been silent for too long on the issue of racism. We need to talk about race." Lindsay, Ben; Lindsay, Ben. We Need To Talk About Race (p. 21). SPCK. Kindle Edition. The book contains helpful teaching about experience, history and scripture. All of this is valuable, and I will go on to speak about it more in a moment, but perhaps the most significant aspect of the book is the fact that it courageously addresses an issue which is so poorly understood by people like myself. An overview of the book In most of these recordings I take us through a book step-by-step. However, with this one, I would prefer to talk about it's overall effect on me. Because, whilst I learn some very interesting and helpful specific lessons regarding scripture, history and experience, my main reason for picking up the book was to enter a world somewhat alien to myself. Ben's writing does this for me. I will never fully grasp the black British experience, but I can listen. Reading is a form of listening. Listening with the opportunity to reflect and change. In today's recording I will include some quotes from the book and more extended thoughts. As far as this blog is concerned I will restrict myself to Giving you these key points which stood out to me from the book. Diversity is not the goal, inclusivity is. Inclusivity is not assimilation. Distinction and difference can be celebrated without becoming something which divides. I have heard stories of racism in the past and listened sympathetically. I have been interested to hear them, and, of course, appalled at the pain inflicted on my friends. However, I feel the need more now to not simply receive those stories, but seek them out. The book has had a profound effect on the way that I think about race. To be honest, in many ways, I'm still processing it. What does it mean for me? What does it mean for my local congregation? What does it mean with the way I engage with people from a different race in my church, but also in my community? I hope my behaviour will grow in Christ-likeness in these areas, and I expect that what I'm learning now is but the beginnings of a lifetime of learning. I pray and hope my heart and mind will remain open. I conclude with one more quote from Ben: "As Christians, we are to model the sacrificial, inclusive, impartial, humble approach of Jesus and be intentional in crossing the racial divides in our communities." page 151 Your thoughts...please? Have you read this book? Have you read other books on race and Christianity? I'd be grateful if you could recommend more books to me, but also why do you think they are significant. In Ben’s opinion, olive oil is without a doubt the most important oil that we have in our diet. After all the hunting TJ does around the world, it was his turn to be hunted by Ben, and the resulting conversation the two have on today’s show is worth its weight in gold. TJ had an olive oil epiphany after tasting true fresh-pressed olive oil while on a trip to Sicily during his days as a chef and never looked back. Since then, he has been traveling the world to work with the best producers out there. Ben and TJ do some live testing of different varieties today, and TJ covers the fascinating and intricate ways high-quality olive oil gets produced and assessed, its many complex flavor profiles, and huge health benefits. In the time it will take me to introduce my next guest - 2400 hrs of video will be uploaded to YouTube. Today alone - 5 billion videos will be watched - which - if you do the maths - should equate to 5 billion opportunities to interrupt and capture the attention of those eyeballs right? Wrong. More like 5 billion opportunities to get lost, unseen and be drowned out in one of the noisiest rooms on earth. So, in a world where we now have the ability to pause live TV, fast forward adverts, pay for ‘interruption free’ viewing and tune out billions of dollars of carefully crafted attempts to steal our attention. Or - in the world of my next guest - simply press ‘SKIP’ on the bottom right hand corner of the screen after 5 seconds. The question becomes - how do you make sure the stories you tell are UnSkippable? That was the question I asked my next guest the first time we met - nearly two years ago in the middle of a Boston blizzard. His response - and the data he was able to provide from having LITERALLY studied those 5 billion daily hours of Youtube viewing. Answered more questions for me about online storytelling than any conversation since. Hence - why he’s back today. My next guest is Ben Jones – Creative Director at Google and Head of Unskippable Labs. A team within Google that started the day Ben decided to put his own credit card on the line - brave man - to try and figure out exactly what makes a Youtube story or specifically advertisement - so compelling that it’s unskippable. In that conversation we broke down the Netflix Effect - and how it continues to defy the rules of attention (clue: if human attention spans are really at their lowest point - 8 seconds at last check - then why are we binge watching more TV series than ever before?), we talked about ideal story lengths, production values and the incredible results of how long we are literally willing to watch a video of a brick wall. I’m not joking - as it turns out - and Bens credit card bill will attest - the answer is a ridiculously long period of time. If you’re business is in any way dependant on trading attention, storytelling, or any form or content marketing - definitely go back in the archives and check it out.In today’s conversation - we go even deeper into the wilderness. Diving into the what is - and what is to come in the world of online storytelling - including topics such as:The bottom line traits that ALL unskippable stories all have in commonHow data can - and increasingly will - change the way we tell stories. Including machine learning and why it’s not time for Creative Directors to retire just yet. Good news or bad news - depending on how you look at it.The emergence of intent signals, what they are and and how we can use them to get more sophisticated about the stories we tell, to who and whenHow and when to pull the lever of customising content - to avoid wasting time and moneyWhether our ability to make good decisions when it comes to content - actually impairs the more data we have access toThe number one metric to double down on when it comes to amplifying what worksAnd obviously - what Ben sees coming on the horizon for digital storytellingI always love having people back on the show - it’s an opportunity to jump back in and explore the extra 10% of the iceberg we rarely have time to touch. In Ben’s case, and with 250 UnSkippable experiments and counting up his sleeve - it’s an iceberg of knowledge that just keeps on growing. So sit back, stretch out, stride through, sip on - I could literally keep going here - and enjoy my reunion with the man at the forefront of the future of storytelling. Ben Baker joins me from the one and only Nova Scotia, Canada where he’s responsible for East Coast Growing Solutions where he’s grown for just over 4 years with a wide array of mediums, setups, styles and so on. Now that Canada is legal for most citizens to grow 4 plants at home, he found a niche in the market that was unfulfilled by helping people learn to grow their own cannabis at home. Ben’s currently growing  a few different strains under a 630w Ceramic Metal Halide, in ProMix HP  (my preferred media) with Mantis nutrients. The reason he likes Mantis is because it’s one bottle to provide your plant what it needs. With 5ml per liter of water, it’s ph buffered so you don’t have to check the PH levels of your feeding program. This is a huge benefit and reduces the work that a grower has to do each and every watering. Ben states that feeding and nutrient regimen is the thing growers must focus on when concerned with overall plant health. You need to ensure that your plants are getting the right nutrients when they need it. Genetics are also a huge part to Ben’s success, as they are the foundation of a good grow. What’s Ben looking for when selecting the right strain to grow? As a rosin producer and consumer, he looks for trichome production. He likes the super frosty type of cannabis to ensure he’s getting good yields from the rosin pressing. Healthy plants, with vigorous growth is important and he strongly believes in quality over quantity. Ben discusses his particular feeding schedule for Mantis, and his time before. Listen in before the 10 minute mark to listen to his theories on feeding, flushing and when the appropriate time to do both is. How do you increase yield on an individual plant? He suggests it’s not all about the amount of plants you cram into a space, but it’s all about the microclimate that you create for your plants. Aside from genetics, upgrading your lights is important as well, without overdoing it with the heat that the lights that create. He also talks a bit (at 15 minutes) about proper training and creating a screen of green for your plants to ensure your maximizing that light increase. Stressing your plant is important to trichome production. In Ben’s experience, not all stressing techniques are successful in producing more trichomes, flavonoids, and overall cannabinoids – but his tip that he delivers right around 18:45 is to switch up your light spectrum. He prefers to go from an HPS light to a CMH light right around the last 2 weeks of flower to bring out the best trichome production. Around the 19:45 mark he talks about how to grow some purple cannabis, which is some of the most desirable colors to pull out of your plants. He talks about why it’s important to lower your temperatures at night over the last couple of weeks. What type of characteristins make the most successful grower? PASSION is the most important thing to Ben, or else he knows growers will just half-ass the process and not grow great cannabis. He also looks for like minded people to teach, and we can’t agree with that more at The Homegrown Helpers. Matching you up with the right teacher for your personality is critical to your success. Ben also gives one more tip at 21:30, so tune in and listen up for the last type of characteristic that he looks for. Everyone has to start somewhere. It’s a fun hobby, it will consume your time, and people may judge you so be careful. That’s Ben’s last bit of advice for all the growers listening right now. Weeeeelcoooooooome!! This week features an oldie but a goodie. The classic "I just found out I'm going to be a dad and I'm pretty sure my life would be a whole lot easier if I didn't stick around" dilemma. In Ben's defense though, how could he possibly have known that having unprotected sex would result in a pregnancy?! It's not like he's training to be a doctor or whatever. Also Megan and Sean argue for the millionth time. And Felicity is probably in this episode. There's like, an 80% chance she's in this one y'all.

At first blush, market volatility and fragility would appear to be two sides of the same coin. But for Ben Bowler and his global team at BAML, the last 5 years has uniquely seen muted overall daily volatility punctuated by occasional but extreme market outbursts. In Ben’s role as global head of derivative research, he has studied this period - one in which market kurtosis, that pesky 4th moment, has been substantially high. Perhaps owing to the conditioning wrought by the heavy hand of Central Banks, investors have, in Bowler’s rendering, increasingly competed for “dip Alpha”. Thus, the market’s growing tendency to lurch from calm to calamity as crowded positioning is unwound and then ultimately re-established once the Central Bank asserts its desire to see easier financial conditions. The result is a remarkable change in the character of market volatility post crisis. In addition to exploring the notion of market fragility, my conversation with Ben considers the volatility risk premium, the value of signals from the landscape of cross-asset vol, and the impact of vol selling on the market’s gamma profile and resulting level of realized index volatility. We also broadly discuss the impact of risk control funds, the speed with which exposures can be de-risked and the greater incidence of flash-crash type events. Ben's insights are excellent. I hope you enjoy this discussion as much as I did, my conversation with Ben Bowler on this episode of the Alpha Exchange.

Hannah found that with her previous business she was traveling a lot and wasn’t able to spend much time with her husband. She was researching jobs that she could do from home at that time and came across the Bookkeeper Business Launch course on the Penny Hoarder website and decided to give it a try. [6:10] Hannah serves around 12 clients at this point. There was a lot of fear originally, taking on a client beyond Hannah’s husband who was her first, but she realized that she really did have all the tools she needed to be an exceptional bookkeeper thanks to Ben’s course. [8:35] All of Hannah’s clients have come from LinkedIn mining, a special tactic that is covered in the course. She spent some money on Facebook but the stuff that has worked and gotten her paying clients has been completely free. [9:20] Hannah originally started out working with farmers but quickly realized they are not clients interested in paying for a bookkeeper. She has since expanded to working with agriculture businesses instead. [12:00] There is always another fear to break through. For Hannah, one of her greatest fears is one she has to overcome nearly every day; that her clients are not going to be happy. That one day she will send them an invoice and they will say she isn’t doing enough for them and they won’t want to pay. [14:00] There are always things that we wish we could do differently, but those are the very lessons that got us to where we are. For Hannah, that came in the form of turning down a client that wasn’t willing to pay the price for the service that he desperately needed. In that case, she was glad that she managed to avoid what would have been a big mistake. [16:30] Some days the stress of owning her own business is too much, but at the same time, she couldn’t imagine doing anything else. The best part of owning a business is the freedom to choose her hours. [18:20] Hannah’s current opportunity is adding cash flow as an advisory service to her business but she’s not sure how to implement it or how to sell it. [21:10] Everyone is motivated in one of two ways; they either want something or don’t want something. For the client that has requested Hannah forecast their cash flow, they are trying to avoid debt. Before she adds a new service to her business, she should really understand what her clients are looking for and what they want. She should ask to talk to them for 20 to 30 minutes about their vision for their business and what they are trying to achieve. [23:45] In Ben’s experience, 98% of accounting professionals do not present their clients the statement of cash flows. The reason they don’t is because they don’t understand it. Hannah should continue to show the statement to each of her clients but also seek to learn what it means and how to explain the information. [26:45] The most common questions that Hannah gets are basically “How much money do we have?” and “How can I pay these bills?”. Most of Hannah’s clients are somewhat financially savvy, but she’s found that what they want is for Hannah to take care of everything. But what they really need is collaboration. [29:00] Hannah is in a position where she doesn’t have to take on new clients, that means she can filter through clients that are interested in collaborating rather than just dumping their financials on her. [30:30] When looking for new clients, Hannah can look for people that are willing to pay for her advisory services, need them, and are willing to collaborate with her. [31:50] Hannah should surprise one of her clients by just adding that service for free as a way to gain experience and feedback. The name of the game is simply listening to our clients and then giving them what they want. [33:50] Data entry and figuring out problems are Hannah’s wheelhouse. She’s comfortable and confident in those skills. [36:00] Hannah is hoping to take on a couple more employees so she can work in a more part-time role. To do that she’s going to have to get clear on what she wants for her business, what it is that her clients want, and the sweet spot between the two. [38:30] The first thing Hannah is going to do is talk to her clients, dig into what they really want, and then she is going to get to know the statement of cash flows. Next, she’s going to make a big push for new clients that are interested in working with her in an advisory capacity. [40:20] What are the roles that your potential clients are playing in their business that they don’t want to? What are the pains they are experiencing? What are the things that they want?

“It's like I'm too far away, in time, from when I would actively participate in things, enjoying them while they were happening…” Ben Schreiber mostly inhabits a world within himself, sharing it with his alter ego Georgie, living often non-linearly in a process of psychosis with visions and images of characters that fade in and out. In reality, Ben is in sessions with his therapist, Dr C, who is inviting him to recall family memories. Inside his own world, Ben is in front of the cameras he has set up in his home office, telling his story. In it, he recalls his sex education as a child, the sex ed. in class counterpointing his father's pornography and the relationship his father may or may not have had with Gladice, a sexually provocative woman who has similarities to and elements of Claudia, a woman Ben meets aged thirty. Claudia captivates Ben when they share an early ‘moment' together while smoking and a physical one that involves Ben's foot fetish in which he paints her toes and makes love to her feet. Claudia urges Ben to go ahead and write about his life and experiences. Ben again begins to recall his early sexual experiences. A particularly vivid one is the day he is with his grandmother at the gym and he sees her friend fully naked in the changing room. Darlene, at least in Ben's version of the scene, temptingly and languorously dresses herself in front of him. Ben also sees his own funeral, attended by numerous ex-girlfriends (even an ex-boyfriend) who talk about how, in spite of Ben trying to be considerate at first, the relationship always failed when Ben's behavior degenerated. Ben discusses his failure to engage with life with Georgie. Georgie encourages him to make changes, to find work (even though Ben is rich), to find friends, to seek whatever it is he really wants, to face up to why he acts and lives life as he does. Back in therapy, Ben is with Dr C, where he begins to relate a story of his grandmother, of her toughness during his childhood. Flashing forward to another session, Ben as Georgie is very agitated. Inside his mind, the ghost of his grandmother visits Ben at home. Georgie is there too, helping Ben to recall and face the subdued memories of this woman. Georgie is eleven years old… he thinks he wants to do anything to help his sobbing, lonely grandmother until… Although he wants her to leave his bedroom, he is frozen as she sexually assaults him, the experience mixing with the pornography and sex ed. he has recently been exposed to. Again with Dr C, Ben is highly anxious, pacing. Georgie encourages Ben to open up to Dr C. He does and breaks down, crying hard. In Ben's internal world, a number of characters attempt to console Ben, including his wife, Kelly, who may or may not have been real, as he comes to terms with his childhood memories in the following days. Ben looks up to the cameras, says his goodbyes, and leaves. Author, Jonathan Harnisch has written the bestselling and award-winning novels, Lover in the Nobody, Living Colorful Beauty and When We Were Invincible. At the opening of Living Colorful Beauty, the reader is presented with two protagonists. There's Ben, the narrator of the preface, who relates the story of the awful sex education classes he sat through in middle school and of his subsequent discovery of his father's collection of pornography; and then there's Georgie, a sexual submissive with a foot fetish, who is obsessed with his beautiful and manipulative next-door neighbor Claudia. As the story progresses, however, it becomes clear that Georgie and Ben share a single three-dimensional body. Georgie is a character in a novel Ben is writing, and Ben maintains that Georgie is in fact no more than a literary device. However, it is clear almost immediately that this is not the case. Throughout his life, Ben has received a number of psychiatric diagnoses, ranging from Tourette's Syndrome to borderline personality disorder to schizoaffective disorder, and he displays some traits of all of these. Yet amid all these diagnoses, the one thing that seems to have slipped under the radar thus far is his tendency towards emotional dissociation, which is closely related to post-traumatic stress syndrome. It is this dissociative tendency that has led Ben to create Georgie, a safe repository for the emotions and desires – primarily sexual – that Ben himself is unable to process. Initially, therefore, the life of Ben and Georgie is fairly well ordered. It is clear from the start that Ben has issues relating to women: his romantic life has been a string of broken relationships and missed opportunities, and though he needs love desperately he finds himself overcome by fear around women. Whenever this issue arises, Ben retreats into Georgie's relationship with Claudia. Claudia is compelling, manipulative, emotionally abusive, and tremendously sensual. She controls Georgie completely, only allowing him sex at certain times, alternately telling him she loves him and that she couldn't care less about him, telling him she won't sleep with him and then inviting him to watch her sleep with other men and other women. Yet Georgie is inextricably drawn to her, accepting all of the emotional pain that comes with his relationship with her as long as he can continue to hope that she may sleep with him again. The sex they share is gritty and fetish-laden, with strong overtones of sadomasochism and violence, and their relationship itself is sustained entirely by Georgie's obsession. Yet he is unable to let Claudia go. Similarly, Ben claims that Georgie's relationship with Claudia is based on his own relationship with Heidi – yet as the story progresses, we learn that Heidi is a lesbian whom Ben met once some months ago when she was in town for a conference, and that after one night, she left town and Ben had never heard from her again. In Ben's relationship with Heidi, mirrored in his imagining of Georgie's relationship with Claudia, it is clear that his interest is not in Heidi but rather in the image of Heidi, which, in the absence of the real Heidi, Ben can mold into whatever he needs her to be. Heidi is the locus of Ben's obsession, as Claudia is the locus of Georgie's; however, the root of these obsessive tendencies lies somewhere else entirely.
