The plan was for the Fantastic Four to go on a short little trip. That was all. Just a short trip and then boom....back to the old nine to five grind. But we ran into a little problem, didn't we. Well, hi there! Welcome to our wonderful treaty on pools, tubs, water holes, and puddles. Hopefully you will learn something. If you do not, please do not sue us. The "Great Bath" at the site of Mohenjo-Daro in modern-day Pakistan was most likely the first swimming pool, dug during the 3rd millennium BC. This pool is 12 by 7 metres (39 by 23 feet), is lined with bricks, and was covered with a tar-based sealant. Swimming pools became popular in Britain in the mid-19th century. As early as 1837, six indoor pools with diving boards existed in London, England. The Maidstone Swimming Club in Maidstone, Kent is believed to be the oldest surviving swimming club in Britain. It was formed in 1844, in response to concerns over drownings in the River Medway, especially since would-be rescuers would often drown because they themselves could not swim to safety. he modern Olympic Games started in 1896 and included swimming races, after which the popularity of swimming pools began to spread. In the US, the Racquet Club of Philadelphia clubhouse (1907) boasts one of the world's first modern above-ground swimming pools. The first swimming pool to go to sea on an ocean liner was installed on the White Star Line's Adriatic in 1906. he Amateur Swimming Association was founded in 1869 in England, and the Oxford Swimming Club in 1909. The presence of indoor baths in the cobbled area of Merton Street might have persuaded the less hardy of the aquatic brigade to join. So, bathers gradually became swimmers, and bathing pools became swimming pools. According to the Guinness World Records, the largest swimming pool in the world is San Alfonso del Mar Seawater pool in Algarrobo, Chile. It is 1,013 m (3,323 ft) long and has an area of 8 ha (20 acres). At its deepest, it is 3.5 m (11 ft) deep. It was completed in December 2006. In 2021, Deep Dive Dubai, located in Dubai, UAE, was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's deepest swimming pool reaching 60 metres (200 ft). The Y-40 swimming pool at the Hotel Terme Millepini in Padua, Italy, previously held the record, 42.15 m (138.3 ft), from 2014 until 2021. The Fleishhacker Pool in San Francisco was the largest heated outdoor swimming pool in the United States. Opened on 23 April 1925, it measured 1,000 by 150 ft (300 by 50 m) and was so large that the lifeguards required kayaks for patrol. It was closed in 1971 due to low patronage. Today's episode guest is John Colin Lumley, a British real tennis powerhouse born on August 7, 1992. Currently ranked number two in the world, John was practically raised on the court in a family of champions, with his father a two-time Australian Open winner and his mother a six-time Ladies Real Tennis World Champion. Now the assistant professional at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia, John faced off against Camden Riviere in a thrilling 2023 World Championship bid at the Westwood Country Club in Virginia. Join us as we explore his journey, his intense World Championship challenge, and his relentless pursuit of greatness in 2024. Speaking with John, we explore the mental tools and techniques essential for high-stakes performance. For instance, he shares how music keeps him in the right mindset during matches and how self-talk—both positive and instructional—helps maintain high energy on the court. He discusses his reliance on a "goldfish mentality" to quickly let go of mistakes, enabling him to stay focused and optimistic after setbacks. Further, we also had the possibility to unpack the concept of success, victory, and mastery which are often misunderstood as a single idea, rather than unique pursuits. Get insights into the nuanced psychological aspects that drive an athlete to grow beyond traditional markers of success, aiming for long-lasting greatness. If you are visually impaired or blind, or if you know someone who is, and would like to take part to the series of Martial Attitude Voice podcast interviews exploring touch, confidence and blindness or if you would like to join in the Martial Attitude Training workshops now running in London every Sunday, please do keep in touch via Instagram or according to your communication preferences, all available HERE. ParentingAces - The Junior Tennis and College Tennis Podcast
NOTE: Please pardon the technical issues with the sound. We did our best to capture all of Lester's stories though some of the audio & video glitched along the way. Welcome to Season 12 Episode 40 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week's episode is one that's very special to me as it features my father's college teammate, Lester Sack, who is still competing on the world stage at age 87! Lester Sack didn't really start developing his tennis game until he showed up at the Tulane tennis courts as an 18-year-old freshman walk-on. He credits coach Emmett Pare with his success on the Tulane team and beyond. Lester has been competing on the Seniors and Super Seniors tour ever since graduating from Tulane in 1958, earning a ranking in the top 3 nationally in every age group. He is the epitome of a lifelong learner, even now continuing to make changes and improvements to his game. Here are just a few of his accomplishments in his illustrious tennis life: Played number 3 singles and number 1 doubles for Tulane University from 1956 to 1958 when the Green Wave won 3 Southeastern Conference Championships, and he and was ranked number 1 in doubles in the conference with partner Ron Holmberg Joined the professional tour and won singles titles in England and Germany, won the 1965 Canadian Open Doubles Championships, and reached the 3rd round of the 1966 French Open Mississippi resident until 1977 and one of the most dominant players of his generation, winning the Mississippi Open or Mississippi Closed every year and ranked number 1 in Mississippi Men's Open Singles and top 10 in the South every year from 1959 to 1975 Won numerous state and section age group tournaments and ranked 2nd in the nation in Men's 45 singles in 1984, won the 1984 Men's 45 Singles National Championship and ranked 7th and was a finalist at the Men's 55 National Clay Court Singles Championship in 1987 Represented the United States on the Dubler Cup, Gordon Cup, Gardner Mulloy Cup, Stevens Cup, and World Team Championship teams Served as the head coach of the USTA New Orleans Area Training Center and was an assistant pro for the Racquet Club of Memphis and the New Orleans Lawn Tennis Club Inducted into the Mississippi Tennis Hall of Fame in 1994, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, the Clarksdale & Cohoma County Mississippi Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009, the USTA Southern Tennis Hall of Fame in 2005, Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 And Lester isn't even the oldest guy out there competing on the world stage! Take a look at this article on centenarian Henry Young who also played in the recent World Team Championships in Mallorca! I hope to have the chance to hit with Lester in the near future. In the meantime, I'll continue to follow his tennis journey as he makes his way into his 90's! If you're so inclined, please share this – and all our episodes! – with your tennis community. What a great conversation with Pat Gehant, competitive tennis player, grandmother, recently retired so she can now focus on her other passion projects. Join us to hear the conversation and learn about her:· Many talents including photography.· Journey out of the box was so important.· Career Principles: know yourself, learn new things, work collaboratively and future oriented focus on new opportunity.· Career as an IT Director without any certifications!· Gifts as a visionary, collaborator and networker.· Career decision based on her 4-year old daughter's concerns.· Message: ‘I close the time and place for my shift to continue a passion focused life on my terms'.· Challenge to let go and actually retire to shift to other life passions. Pat offers such vulnerable insight into her passion led career journey and what she has learned along the way. Reclaim your sovereignty over your career with knowledge, creativity and leave the fear of failure at the door. Golden rule of passion driven career- work hard in the current job with an eye towards the future and find the doors and open them. BTW she only applied for 2 jobs in her entire career…..everything else was networking, showcasing her skills and being tapped. The conversation is important, as so many shifts in the workforce, jobs and roles and responsibilities are evolving which is creating new jobs needing new skills. Do you have a chance to create your next role? Recommendations from Pat:· Creative Confidence, Unleashing the creative potential within us, Tom, and David Kelly. We are taught in school to follow the syllabus and chase the grade. When we enter the workplace many times, we are stuck. “Too often, companies and individuals assume that creativity and innovation are the domain of the "creative types." Tom and David Kelly, two of the leading experts in innovation, design, and creativity on the planet show us that each and every one of us is creative.” This book will allow you to understand your creative side and that if you want more success you will have to shrug off more failure. An energizing read at any stage of your career. #1 Know yourself· Open, The Andre Agassi story, Autobiography. From Andre Agassi, one of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most gifted men ever to step onto a tennis court, a beautiful, haunting autobiography. This is a story that will captivate both tennis players as well as anyone interested in learning how one can overcome failure on such a public forum and become a beloved and humble citizen of the world. #1 Know yourself· A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy...Book by Sonia Purnell. In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and--despite her prosthetic leg--helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it. Why read this? Because this book reads like the best of Daniel Silva, John Le Carre, and other, only this is real…all of it! #3 – Work Collaboratively (I know a stretch, but an amazing women we never learned about in school. What a story!)· Unstoppable" Siggi B. Wilzig's Astonishing Journey from Auschwitz Survivor and Penniless Immigrant to Wall Street Legend" by Joshia M. Greene. Unstoppable is the ultimate immigrant story and an epic David-and-Goliath adventure. While American teens were socializing in ice cream parlors, Siggi was suffering beatings by Nazi hoodlums for being a Jew and was soon deported along with his family to the darkest place the world has ever known: Auschwitz. The story of his perseverance and commitment to faith, family and country is a reminder of the good and the evil that can result from our lack of understanding. #4 – Future Oriented with focus on the new opportunities· Tournament de Pizza, (Formerly Tour de Pizza) at the Racquet Club of St. Pete that has a menu comprised of specialty 'zas, subs, salads and more with a full liquor bar with 3Daughters on tap., It is the home of the famous pizza diet and Kahwa Coffee! The restaurant is also known for owner Matt McClellan's belief that pizza is healthy food. It's the home of the "30-day pizza diet". Matt is an award-winning body builder who believes tennis is the best cardio workout to a full and healthy lifestyle. So, Matt is not just pizza, Tournament de Pizza is a lifestyle. What do a garage, “The Hunt for Red October,” the seven pillars of wellness, and the hero's journey all have in common? You'll find out in this episode with Rick Stollmeyer, founder and Executive Chairman of Mindbody. Back in 2001, Rick bootstrapped the launch of Mindbody. 14 years later, he took the company public, raising $100M for an IPO. Then, in June 2020, the business was acquired for $1.9B. It’s an incredible entrepreneurial success story, and the Mindbody platform has had a huge impact on the industry over the last two decades. If you’re not familiar, Mindbody is both a cloud platform and an app. The cloud enables entrepreneurs all over the world in the fitness, wellness, and beauty space — businesses like ClassPass, Bikram Yoga, and the New York Health & Racquet Club — to run, market, and grow their businesses, and the app helps consumers easily find and engage with wellness businesses in their local communities or wherever they travel. Their cloud-based business management software powers over 60,000 fitness, spa, salon and wellness businesses in over 140 countries and their web and mobile booking tools help those businesses engage with more than 50 million people. In his new role as Executive Chairman of Mindbody, Rick says he is doubling down on giving back to the industry by coaching other entrepreneurs and getting more involved in thought leadership for the industry. In fact, Rick just published a book called https://www.amazon.com/Building-Wellness-Business-That-Lasts/dp/1119679060 ("Building a Wellness Business That Lasts: How to Make a Great Living Doing What You Love.") In this interview, you'll hear why he wants readers to learn from both the right and wrong decisions he's made over the years and why he's so positive about new business opportunities in the wellness space, even during the era of COVID-19. You'll also hear three crucial marketing steps that you need for success, whether you’re bootstrapping a new launch or preparing for a big IPO. Zack and Trainer Beau talk about resolutions and making reasonable, attainable resolutions that matter.
On Episode 53, Stephanie Goodman, an OT practitioner from Kansas City, MO, shared about her work as a coach at The Parkinson's Exercise and Wellness Center in Overland Park, KS. On this episode, two individuals with whom she works - Sarrisa Curry and Jacob Weiss - both of whom are pioneering innovative work with people in the Parkinson's Disease community, talk about their work and research with people with Parkinson's Disease. From a young age, Sarrisa has been fascinated by the human body's ability to adapt to the stimulus, positive and negative. She sought a career that would allow her to pursue this passion. She achieved her Massage Therapy certification in 2002. Over the next few years she added certifications in multiple forms of health including weight training, group fitness classes, and nutrition supplementation. She became a NASM Certified Personal trainer in 2014. She spent 6 years as the manager of operations of a high end Racquet Club, learning the ins and outs of the fitness industry. In 2016 she began working with people with Parkinson's Disease in an exercise setting, boxing specifically. Very quickly she saw that the brain, even in a diseased condition, can adapt and positively change with exercise. She witnessed miraculous changes in people's movement, balance, mood, and neurological function after just a few sessions of boxing. It was a lifechanging interaction. She shifted her entire focus to the Parkinson's Community and soon thereafter founded The Parkinson's Exercise and Wellness Center (The PEWC), a non-profit organizations dedicated to offering exercise as a form of therapy for people with PD. She has surrounded herself with 4 other coaches who share the same passion for the PD community and Health. Together they provide 6 different forms of exercise formats in over 25 classes a week via Zoom and in person. The impact her organization has had on hundreds of people in The Kansas City area is phenomenal. Her life was shaped by her fascination and all the paths she traveled prepared her for the mission of The PEWC. She loves the path her life has taken her. She walks along with her husband and co-Founder David Curry. Together they are raising 3 daughters and 2 sons, 2 dogs and a Holland Lop Rabbit. Dr. Jacob Weiss is the founder and the director of HandEyeBody, a social enterprise with a mission to help people of all fitness levels move better, focus better, and function better. Since graduating from Princeton University and completing his PhD in Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University, he has developed and shared his interactive training programs with conferences, corporate teams, schools, and non-profit organizations. He also has toured the world as a professional juggler and social entrepreneur, bringing laughter and joy to communities and families that need it most. Dr. Weiss currently runs HandEyeBody Academy, a global online training platform to bring accessible and fun movement methods to health, wellness, and fitness programs. To connect with the guests, visit their website at https://www.handeyebody.com or follow their work on social media @handeyebody (Twitter and Instagram) or www.facebook.com/handeyebody (Facebook).
