Befitting the producer he is, Patrick Cotnoir (The Chris Gethard Show, The George Lucas Talk Show, ASSSSCAT) would book the hell out of his own funeral. He answers the usual TIYA questions and tries to deconstruct the show in the process. According to me, he fails! Listen in to a fire side chat with Joe Bill -- widely regarded as one of the best teachers of Scenic and Comedic Improvisation in the world today. He is one of the founding members of Annoyance Theater Chicago where, for 12 years, he performed in and/or directed more than 60 different shows. He was the Director of Corporate Training at iO Chicago for 15 years and a Teacher & Guest Artist in Residence at The Second City Conservatory & Training Center for another 15 years. Joe first learned Improvisation and in 1977 studied and worked with Del Close from 1985 through the mid 90’s. Joe is ½ of the original improvised Monoscene, BASSPROV with Mark Sutton, . They have been heralded by the NY TIMES: "BASSPROV refreshingly has the feel of a quiet character study...jokes emerge organically, using wordplay, character quirks and quicksilver wit." Joe tours all over the world, teaching and headlining with extremely talented Duo partners like Mark Sutton (Annoyance Theater Co-Founding Member and Artistic Director for Training and Development at The Second City) in the long-running BASSPROV, Jill Bernard (Huge Improv Theater – Mpls.) in their hit show SCRAM!, with Lee White (CRUMBS – Winnipeg, Berlin) in their heroic Duo show PARADIGM, with International Improv Legend Patti Stiles (AD - Impro Melbourne) in their groundbreaking show Our Play, Stacey Hallal (Curious Comedy Theater – Portland, OR) in Stacey & Joe and We Slept Together, Heather Urquhart (Improviser/Director The Maydays & Showstopper The Improvised Musical – London/U.K.) in their magical improvised Musical Blues Hammer (with the stupendous Joe Samuel on Improvised Orchestra) and with David Razowsky (Host A.D.D. Comedy Podcast) in Razowsky & Bill. He’s played with many other Duo partners, in the U.S. and abroad, in many Festival Ensemble shows and in every improvised format and/or style imaginable. For the last 6 years he has also been teaching and performing in French, in many cities in France, Belgium & Luxembourg. He is living his dream! He has played as a guest in Play Unscripted with ImproTheatre L.A., Grand Theft Impro at Impro Melbourne (Australia), The Scene at The PIT in New York City and UCB in L.A., with Let’s Have A Ball and ASSSSCAT 3000 at UCB Theater in New York & L.A. and with Kornfeld & Andrews at Magnet Theater in New York City. And, of course, he has performed, directed, taught and served as an Artistic Adviser for a number of Improvisation/Comedy Theaters & Festivals on every continent except Antarctica (but he’s working on that!) and at every major Improv Festival in The United States. You can find Joe on facebook at Joe Bill Teaches! | Facebook, which is also the best place to get connected with the Story Chain sessions that Joe hosts.
This week in the diner I got to kick it with an old friend and improv buddy, Don Fanelli. This session was jam packed with personal development strategies, parenting insights, and the quick wit that you love to see from two comedians. We talked about the self-talk strategies that are useful in a creative field and life in general, and Don gave an honest take on the ups and downs of parenting. We talked about the importance of therapy, the vulnerability needed in forming adult relationships (especially relationships between men) and recognizing how friendships morph and serve us in different ways over time. Whether you’re a parent, a creative type, or a friend, this episode is full of nuggets of wisdom and worth your time. About the Guest: Don Fanelli (4% Homo Neanderthalensis) grew up in Northern New Jersey and graduated with an engineering degree which he used for approximately 11 months. He finally discovered the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City and had the honor of performing with the longest running weekend team, The Stepfathers, as well as 2x Cagematch Finals Champions, Fuck That Shit and 3x Three-on-Three Tournament Champions, Sabonis, and in UCB’s flagship show, Asssscat. Don was honored to be selected to perform in the 2015 Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal in the New Faces: Characters division and was a series regular on the PopTV show Nightcap where he got to improvise with stars such as Paul Rudd, Michael J. Fox, Whoopie Goldberg, and up and comer Julianne Moore. Don continues to act and write out of Los Angeles and retired his long running podcast The Need to Fail this year. He joined the ranks of fatherhood last year which is a constant source of joy and fear, dabbles in secular Buddhism and evolutionary psychology, took a break from most social media, and finds peace in cooking. Amen. Connect with Don and learn more: Website: www.don-fanelli.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/donfanelli Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/donfanelli About the Host: Friends! Here's a somewhat stuffy bio of me: I am an author, professional speaker, coach, host, and entrepreneur. My first book, Leading Imperfectly: The value of being authentic for leaders, professionals, and human beings, is available wherever people buy books. I speak internationally to willing and unwilling attendees about authenticity, vulnerability, and leadership. My clients include American Express, General Electric (GE), Accenture, Yale University, The Ohio State University, and many others. As a speaker, I am doing the two things I loves the most: making people think and making people laugh! I host my own events multiple times a year. They are 2-day events called Living Imperfectly Live (and sometimes they are 1-day virtual events). They are a space where humans from every walk of life can come together to be part of a community on the pursuit of badassery. The goal is to help attendees start living the life we say we want to live. Alas, you're here because of an idea I had a number of years ago and didn't think I was good enough to pull it off. I finally acted on it and alas Diner Talks with James was born! As you can see from what I do in my professional life, Diner Talks is alligned with everything I believe in and teach. If this wasn't dry enough, and you would like to know more info about my speaking, events, or coaching feel free to check out my website: JamesTRobo.com. Let’s Be Friends on Social Media! Enjoy Jon Reep's full interview with comedian Sean Conroy! They talk comedy inspirations, standup versus improv comedy, and how comedians are dealing with the current world situation.Acerbic comedian Sean Conroy is self-lacerating and constantly annoyed- at himself and everybody else- but always manages to sneak in a healthy dose of silliness and joyful charm. Splitsider.com describes him as “intimidatingly smart, intimidatingly funny, and just plain intimidating.”He’s a multi-disciplined comedy tour-de-force. As a stand-up, Sean’s performed on Conan and Comedy Central. As an improviser, he was a founding member of the first ever house team at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, legendary improv group The Swarm, and has been a regular in the UCB’s flagship show ASSSSCAT for almost twenty years (in fact they asked him to perform with them when they recorded their live show for Shout Factory, still available on DVD). He’s been a television writer for over a decade (Key & Peele, Crossballs, Dog Bites Man, Gentlemen Lobsters, Players, Love Inc.), most recently finishing up his third season as head writer of Adult Swim’s cult favorite Mr. Pickles, about a dog who’s sort of like Lassie (except he worships Satan, and is a serial killer). He’s hosted over 325 episodes of his podcast, The Long Shot (which the AV Club calls “rollicking” and “a consistent delight”). He enjoys good coffee, mediocre whiskey, and ship novels. Mary Holland and Will Hines join me to watch The Lawnmower Man and discuss in Virtual Reality with a live audience how badly this movie's premise is executed and how the CGI felt most likely outdated on the date of it's release. On today's episode I talk to comedian and actor Anthony Atamanuik. Over the last year, Tony has received a great deal of deserved acclaim for his accurately debauched Donald Trump impression, travelling the world with James Adomian in the Trump vs. Bernie Debate Tour. The two appeared on a special @Midnight episode and had two specials on Fusion. But before that, Tony was a house performer at UCB on the legendary improv team Death by Roo Roo and as a co-host of the theatre's flagship show ASSSSCAT 3000. You might also know Tony as one of the silent 30 Rock writers or from his appearances on Broad City, DIfficult People and Brett Gelman's Adult Swim specials. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.

In this episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with comedian Matt Besser. Matt is one of the founding members of Upright Citizens Brigade and a hilarious guy to talk to. The relentless upbeat Jodi Lennon stops by WORST GIG EVER to spread some P.M.A. and somehow gets away with it! Jodi traces her history from the Chicago improv scene to the Big Apple and landing on the early Comedy Central sketch show Exit 57, (featuring younger versions of Stephen Colbert and Amy Sedaris), to making The Voice of Something, a documentary about comic Marc Maron in the wake of 9/11. Along the way, Jodi makes a case for needing the drama, dealing with small crowds, and why she thinks Greenpoint, Brooklyn stinks. This ep also features a special guest appearence by the wackiest funnyman this side of Margaritaville, COCONUT JONES!
