Can AI help you make educational videos? In this episode of The Visual Lounge, host Matt Pierce sits down with AI and L&D expert Josh Cavalier, the Founder of JoshCavalier.ai, to explore how to effectively use AI.Josh is quick to point out that AI isn't a replacement for our expertise and skills, but it can act as a handy partner to help you streamline your process. The key to getting the most out of AI is in your prompting approach, which Josh prefers to call “prompt design” rather than “prompt engineering.” He encourages anyone who wants to use AI to experiment with prompts and try to make them as detailed as possible to yield consistent results. We hear about his process and unique method for testing new AI tools, and the advice he has for people getting started with AI prompting. Whether you're an L&D designer or content creator, Josh's tips are a great starting point for experimenting with AI. You might think all secondary and undergraduate level mathematics teachers have the same base level of knowledge. However, that is not the case. In this episode, Meghan Robinson speaks with Dr. Michael Tallman, an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University. His research investigates the relationship between teachers' subject knowledge and their pedagogical actions.
Communicating clearly is probably the most difficult thing anyone can do in business. Our job as Instructional Designers is often to make better communication happen under the guise of "we need everyone to be better trained on _______". It doesn't matter what level you are at within your training team or the overall organization. Everyone from the new intern to the experienced CLO needs to improve their ability to communicate complex ideas and concepts in order to influence others into action. This is where Visual Language Theory comes into play. Kevin Thorn joins us to explore concepts on how to better communicate ideas and transform those ideas into a visual language. One of the most important aspects of this process (and coincidentally in our ID work) is extracting you and your stakeholders' ideas and converting them into a universal visual language that your target audience will clearly understand. We'll discuss the entire process using old school "pen & paper" so that it's accessible to everyone including those professionals not interested in mastering new design tools.Join us for this session and find out how you can also get more in-depth instruction and training on these processes from Kevin at other events like DevLearn and StepAway.Desgin.Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on Twitter. Our Drink'n'Draw host, Kevin Thorn, recently took his family to Disney World and he sketchnoted the entire experience. Of course he did.If you think this doesn't have any relationship or impact on your work, well, you'd be wrong.Analyzing business processes is a mandatory part of L&D work. We listen. We ask questions. We watch. And then magic happens... poof... instructional objectives are written. While that may be how your stakeholders see it, we all know the invisible magic is often a struggle in organizing data and working through business processes that often don't make sense. Most often these processes are trapped inside a SME's head and it's your job to get it out. Understand it. Document it. And then ask if that looks about right? You might already use a spreadsheet and outline the process, or maybe a flow charting app. But have you ever just wanted to sketch it out and get the first draft visual done quickly in order to get their feedback?Kevin Thorn joins us and offers an opportunity for you to practice your sketchnoting skills this summer. You're taking a vacation anyways, so you might as well do a little professional upskilling at the same time, right? And after the August IDIODC break, we expect to see examples of your work ;)Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on Twitter. Virgil Elliott knows traditional oil painting, in fact, he wrote the book on it! It was a few years ago that I stumbled upon his book "Traditional Oil Painting" and read through, I quickly realised that there were many things I didn't know about my own profession; in fact there were many things I was doing in the studio that were causing irreversible harm to the paintings I had painstakingly crafted. Reading Virgil's book, and then joining the private Facebook page by the same name, represented a paradigm shift in my work. Virgil's teachings fundamentally changed the way I approach painting. In this conversation I wanted to revisit some of the themes we discussed way back in episode 2, when we spoke last, and pick up where we left off. This episode is one to keep coming back to: have a notebook handy! Here's Virgil's latest Instructional Video: https://painttube.tv/products/virgil-elliott-traditional-oil-painting-the-principles-of-visual-reality Here's a link to the latest edition of his book! https://www.echopointbooks.com/art/traditional-oil-painting
Video content is the future... of the internet. If you haven't noticed, everyone is creating and consuming more video content than ever before. Even interactive eLearning programs incorporate more video than I can ever remember. Not everyone has jumped on this particular trend, but it's never too late to get onboard.Josh Cavalier is joining us to talk about video production processes and other tips and tricks to help us all improve our processes. You may know how to press that record button, but then what? How many pieces of learning content do you create from that finished video file? We think you'll be surprised by how many options there are. And Josh is just the man to talk with us about it because he's in the process of writing a book on the subject. There are many different topics around video that we can discuss, but it's hard to fit them all into a 45min conversation. In fact, is IDIODC even the right length for a video? Josh will also talk about the long and short of video production. He's got tips for creating both and high performance processes to help increase your productivity in "we need it yesterday" corporate environments. You can either just look busy. Or you can produce more content as if you've got an entire team behind you. Let's talk to Josh about how we can all become high producing learning content creators.Become virtual friends with the IDIODC gang on Twitter.
