I've always found that reading helps me slow down enough to actually think. In this episode, I'll share why I believe that reading tough books makes us better thinkers, not by giving us all the answers, but by making us work for them. I'll also walk through how I use writing to process and refine the ideas I pick up from books.Send Me a Text Message with Your QuestionsSupport the showIMPORTANT LINKS:

Jamie Jones visits Google to discuss the evolution, ecology, and adaptation of the human species. Rationality has taken a hit recently. Recent work in psychology and economics has challenged the notion that the human brain is designed to make rational decisions. However, this observation raises a paradox. By almost any measure, Homo sapiens is a spectacularly successful species. From humble origins approximately two million years ago, humans have grown to a population that exceeds seven billion and have colonized nearly every terrestrial biome. This phenomenal growth suggests that our ancestors made very good decisions. Yet this work from psychology and economics suggests that the decision-making software that our brains run is profoundly flawed — that we are, in a word, irrational. How is it possible that a species apparently so defective in its ability to generate sound decisions can be so incredibly successful? It turns out that the rules for a living organism, anchored in the present and subject to a force of selection which is extremely averse to extinction, are quite different from the rules of abstract, formal rationality. In this Talk, Jones will show how the all-important need to avoid extinction in a world that is at best incompletely known has profound implications for preferences, utility, and rationality. By ignoring the condition of existential uncertainty, the theory of rational decision-making has developed distorted expectations of how an organism working in its own best interest should behave. In this episode, we discuss Jeffrey Kripal's book, “The Flip” which is an exploration of what happens to people who have an experience that is life transforming but which cannot be explained in rational terms. Other thinkers mentioned include Bernardo Kastrup [More than Allegory] and Rupert Sheldrake [Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home]. Jay also talks about the song, Rain and Gold, from his album "Harvesting James".

I've made this a separate Podcast Extra because of the important discussion which follows about the decline of intellectual ability, flipping of the Enlightenment, and much more about the lowering of our society and how people in it relate to one another.Blacklisted Americans is Zimmerman's term for victims of what is currently called “cancel culture.”See all Blacklisted Americans stories here: https://behindtheblack.com/blacklisted-americans/Find other Pratt on Texas Podcast Extra blacklisting updates here: https://prattontexas.com/?s=blacklistwww.PrattonTexas.com

What is intuition? Is logical thought better than intuition? How is rational thought incomplete? How does ego affect my intuitive abilities? How does intuition work? How do intuition and logic work together? How can I strengthen my intuition? In this episode of Love Always, Self, Karista & Shyra discuss the use of intuition, which we are all innately born with, in conjunction with the logical mind that is taught and developed throughout childhood and into adulthood, per societal norms. Intuition is a useful tool and can help fill the gaps where rational thought is incomplete. In this brief episode, Heather shares a recent experience at the Vanocuver airport with a disgruntled traveler. She takes this as a lesson in using rational, logical thinking when feeling emotional about something that seems to negatively affect you for no apparent reason. Heather asks us to look beyond ourselves, at the bigger picture and the surrounding circumstances for an explanation beyond something "just trying to ruin the day."
The rise of capitalism was accompanied by a bitter struggle against the religious obscurantism of feudal reaction. The rationalists, the empiricists and the French materialists struck blow after blow against the dominant ideology of the day. The struggle for rational and scientific thought was an indispensable weapon in the bourgeois revolution. Today however, the capitalist […]
E17 What Rational Thought Can and Cannot Do! |IBGR | Donna Kunde & Londina Cruz “Never make crucial decisions when angry. The rage that clouds judgment fades and only its consequences linger thereafter.”― Stewart Stafford It is important to remember that our automatic mechanism can function as a FAILURE MECHANISM just as easily as it functions as a SUCCESS MECHANISM. The difference depends on the data you give it to process and the goals you set for it. It is a goal striving mechanism and will find a match for whatever data you give it. Many of us subconsciously and unknowingly set FAILURE GOALS when we hold negative attitudes and constantly picture failure in our imagination. This is key - your automatic mechanism does not reason about or question the data you feed it. It just processes what you give it and reacts appropriately to it. It is very important to give the automatic mechanism true facts at all times without adding perceptions or interpretations. Statesmanship is lost in today’s polarized political culture. This necessary art in a self-governing republic must take into account three main elements: Principles, Human Nature, and circumstances. We want to practice this lost art with our listeners by looking at one of the main political stories dominating the news cycle of the week and analyzing it through the eyes of a Statesman. What are the principles behind that particular issue? How does human nature play into any possible solutions? What are the circumstances on the ground that determine which solutions are feasible? After considering these three elements with our listeners, we will be better able to discern what the prudent solutions are for today’s most important political problems. Inside this edition of 201CWithout a Curse,201D Alex looks at a Red Sox team that is still in first place, but has lost five of their last six games. Alex first talks about the carryover from the allegations against Clay Buchholz last week, and the recent reports of Buchholz doctoring the baseball with a combination of sunscreen and rosin. Another chapter in the saga will be written this weekend, as Buchholz takes the mound against 2026 THE BLUE JAYS! The Red Sox walked off with the win on Monday night against the Twins, and Stephen Drew was the hero. Alex declares the Drew vs. Iglesias argument to be over, and says rationality won out. Don2019t look now, but Drew is actually even having a better season than Albert Pujols is2026 Joel Hanrahan, after blowing the save on Monday night, has been placed on the DL for the second time this season. Though it2019s early to make a definitive judgment, Alex asks if the Red Sox may wind up spending more money to replace Jonathan Papelbon at closer than it would2019ve cost to keep him. Unfortunately, it looks as if it may be trending in that direction. Speaking of trends, Felix Doubront has seemed to be trending out of favor with John Farrell and the Red Sox, as Allen Webster took his turn in the rotation this week. Webster pitched poorly, so it is unlikely he will remain in the rotation. But, the Red Sox may have sent Doubront a strong message with this recent demotion. David Ortiz2019 hit streak came to an end on Wednesday night, but the PED suspicion is only beginning. Alex says it2019s fair to ask that question of Ortiz, just as it2019s fair to ask that question of any athlete today. In the 201CAround the League201D segment, Alex analyzes the AL East standings, and talks about how a troubling early season trend with the Rays. He also sends well wishes to JA Happ, who was hit in the head with a line drive on Tuesday night. The day is coming when pitchers will wear helmets on the mound, and incidents like these should begin to expedite that process. The need for instant replay, Roy Halladay2019s pending surgery and the Angels continuing struggles are talked about as well. Email Alex at areimer@bu.edu, and follow him on Twitter @AlexReimer1. Alex finished his sophomore year of college this week, so 2026 yeah. He just wanted you all to know that for some reason.
No updates required to enjoy our WiiU day 1 impressions, and it comes with a free Halbred! Step right up and enjoy the latest gaming goodness from the Nintendo Free Radio crew. Stephen gets the now-traditional music game out of the way early in New Business by touching on the Ubisoft creation app Jam Sessions, which draws comparisons to Windows 3.1, before getting stuck with Austen on the latest Nintendo RPG/platformer hybrid Paper Mario Sticker Star. Donald accepts his WiiU-less fate by going ungodly old school with Donkey Kong: Original Edition (it's a CEMENT factory, thankyouverymuch) and shockingly doesn't want to punch himself out after partaking in Urban Champion (3D Classics), before wrapping with an extended and spirited discussion of the demo for Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion. Austen brings us to the break with a wrap-up of Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation, proof that one can play Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 without having to deal with the average internet user, and unleashes holy hell (and man beams) in El Shaddai: Ascension Of The Metatron. After the break, a wild Halbred appears as the crew ropes in Nintendo World Report features editor Zach Miller for a heavy round of Whatcha Been Watchin' that travels from the sewers of New York in TMNT 2012 to the local arcade for Wreck-It Ralph and wraps in London with Sherlock Holmes In The 22nd Century, Goldeneye, QI, and Where On Earth is Carmen Sandiego? Also included: The finals of the "Weirdest Anime Ever" contest, between FLCL and Hellsing Ultimate. Since this show was taped on November 18th, of course the feature discussion is Wii U: Day 1. Zach and Stephen both got their systems day 1, and despite the best efforts of upgrade servers manage to touch on the Wii transfer process, the eShop, and Stephen's early impressions of Nintendoland. An extra helping of Mushrooms takes us out with love for This Year Collection (http://www.thisyearcollection.org) and free dumping, hatred of Alaskan rocks, and a host falling on his sword (but recovering to help unlock Red Velvet). We will return in a couple of weeks, but you can leave feedback for the show here or by sending an email to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com. Also, be sure to check out the Movember page of Ryan MacNeil (Donald's roommate) at http://mobro.co/ryanmacneil1 and hear Zach regularly on NWR's Connectivity and the Frozen North Dinnercast at Crosstawk (http://www.crosstawk.com/newbusiness/category/the-frozen-north-dinnercast).
