This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to discuss the 1998 Spike Lee film, "He Got Game" starring Denzel Washington and Ray Allen. The film explores the intricate dynamics of the Shuttlesworth family, centered around the promising high-school basketball player, Jesus Shuttlesworth. Jesus is at a crossroads, pursued by the nation's top college basketball programs while navigating the return of his father, Jake, a convicted felon released temporarily to persuade him to join the governor's alma mater - "Big State."As the father and son grapple with a troubled past marked by loss, anger, and resentment, we witness flashbacks revealing the intense basketball training Jesus underwent under Jake and the tragic night that changed their lives forever. Parallel to the Shuttlesworth's story runs a heartfelt subplot of Dakota Barns, a woman trapped in a cycle of abuse, finding solace and aid in Jake, fostering a connection that speaks to the themes of redemption and hope.Despite the turmoil and the gravity of Jake's mission, the estranged family finds themselves wrestling with moral dilemmas and the harsh realities of their individual situations. As the deadline nears, a high-stakes basketball game between father and son becomes the crucible where futures are decided. In a world rife with corruption, temptation, and betrayal, will the bonds of family prevail?Join us on this emotional journey as we delve deep into a story of lost and regained connections, sacrifices, and the harsh truths about redemption and forgiveness in "He Got Game."

Spike Lee directed "He Got Game" in 1998 and although it didn't meet the budget as far as sales go, he taught us things that money can't buy and that's being a man. In this film, being a man is everything, even more than basketball and it's funny because basketball is life for Jake and Jesus Shuttlesworth. The very thing separated these two characters and could it bring them together? And how. I dig the film for it's visual style, how the characters interact with each, seeing actually use their bodies to drve the film. It's a very physical film besides the fact it's mainly of basketball. I also praise how Lee was able to incorporate the business side of basketball, which is always the nasty side 'cause basketball is a big business and it's merciless and this film brings humanity to it. I'd see it again and I wish it can come out in screens again. Especially at the fact that it teaches you how to separate the fakers from the real ones. Enjoy.#spikelee #hegotgame #basketball

Recent Texas transplant and friend-of-the-pod Ching helps Phil & Jake rank the Lone Star State, basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal, and the controversial fashion choice of sandals with socks on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Chopped & screwed is a subgenre of music pioneered by the late DJ Screw for remixes. It's slowed down and looped. So here's kiss me through the phone by Soulja Boy, and Girl by Paul Wall the People's Champ chopped and screwed. Shipley's Donuts is a Houston-based donut chain that Phil only knows about from the Houston airport.  On top of reciting the regular the Pledge of Allegiance every day, Ching's kids also have to pledge allegiance to the Texas state flag. In addition, they have to sing “Deep in the Heart of Texas” for their school show (when they should be singing “California Love” by 2Pac & Dre). Johnny Dang is a Houston-based Jeweler known for making absurd grills. He's the Houston equivalent of Jacob the Jeweler. We rattle off a lot of important names in Texas music, including under-recognized Outlaw Country pioneer Billy Joe Shaver, rap legends Geto Boys, post-hardcore punk visionaries At the Drive-In, and Queen of Tehano Selena. Texas-inspired songs mentioned include “Waiting for a Train” by Jimmie Rodgers, “El Paso” by Marty Robbins, “Luckenbach Texas” by Waylon Jennings and “Amarillo By Morning” by George Strait. We discuss many locations on the map of Texas, such as Houston, El Paso, South Padre Island and Hill Country.Jake mentions the film subgenre Texas Noir, of which No Country for Old Men is a good example. Even though they're crime-related movies set in Texas, it's probably a stretch to include Bonnie & Clyde and Bottle Rocket in this category. Stephon Marbury was the real-life inspiration for the character of Jesus Shuttlesworth in He Got Game. He's kind of nuts and got the Knicks to buy him out of his contract by eating vaseline on camera. Whoa the villain in Steel is Judd Nelson! Ex-NBA player Sam Casell used to pantomime having freakishly large testicles (similar to Buster  Gonad's) as a celebration. Here's Shaq chillin' with The General. And here's DJ Deisel. Here's Bill Paxton in True Lies. Casual footwear discussed includes Crocs, Birkenstocks and Tevas. From Nick Nolte's channeling of Bobby Knight-like anger management issues in "Blue Chips," to Tupac's wild on-set pot-smoking antics during the shooting of "Above the Rim," to Ray Allen's gutsy biblical-themed performance as the pointedly named Jesus Shuttlesworth in "He Got Game," to the iconic "double or nothing" match at the end of the oh so romantic "Love and Basketball," we unpack all sorts of splendors. So fill out your brackets, heat up your nachos, and enjoy our quick-paced one-on-one rundown of this Final Four matchup of basketball-focused films—all four of which depict the tumultuous, temptation-laden recruitment tactics endured by elite collegiate-bound prospects.

This week we pay tribute to one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, Spike Lee. Always bold, never subtle, often brilliant with a command of visual language that is unmatched.      Jungle Fever takes a look at an interracial affair and the ripples it creates in the lives of all those around them, including a breakout performance by Samuel L Jackson. Flipper Purify is a successful architect and happily married with a young daughter. When his firm hires Angie Tucci as a temp to be his secretary... one late night at the office they start a tumultuous relationship.     Crooklyn is a casually plotted but deeply personal semi-autobiographical tale in the summer of 1973. 9 year-old Troy Carmichael learns some hard lessons from her tough mother, naive father, and rowdy siblings.  The project originated as a television pilot and was co-written by two of Lee's siblings.     He Got Game takes a hard look at sports culture, its inherent predatory exploitation, father-son dynamics, and acceptance of on'es past. Jesus Shuttlesworth is the top prospect in the country. His father, Jake Shuttlesworth, is given a week out of prison and the promise of possible early release if he can convince his son to sign a letter of intent to the governor's alma matter.     Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is a remake of Bill Gunn's Ganja and Hess shifts the focus more on religion. Wealthy anthropologist and art collector Dr Hess Green is stabbed with an ancient African dagger by his assistant and becomes addicted to blood. As he settles into his new situation, his assistant's ex-wife decides to drop in.      Da 5 Bloods explores the complicated relationship between African-American soldiers and the military, the lasting effects for both sides that continue, and PTSD. An African-American squad from the US Army 1st Infantry Division secure a crashed CIA plane and it's cargo- a locker full of gold bars to be used as payment for the Lahu people. Deciding that the gold is as much rightfully theirs as anyone's the squad bury their treasure, only to lose it and their leader in the ensuing counter attack and napalm strike. Years later the surviving members return to search the recently rediscovered area. Join us, won't you?Episode 159- Five by Spike Lee

As the two women grow more comfortable they realize their meeting is anything, but by chance. What the two women discover will change their lives moving forward. A Cavs, Lakers & Blazers fan talk uncensored weekly smack about their teams & The NBA. We're sorry we're not sorry! The show is back BUT more importantly so is "Sugar Brick" Shane Rose, the greatest audio engineer in The Land! "Latin Mamba" Ace Mendoza gets us into a great Lakers discussion on the upcoming year. We start the show with an interesting intro and recap "Dingleberry" Duke's birfday, he wore a Jesus Shuttlesworth jersey, he's 34, killin' it! "Mr. Trailblazer, Ding Dong" Niedermeyer also gets us into a great Blazers discussion too. Little bit of NBA Summer league talk, some Team USA, Dion "The Clapper" Waiters replacing Dwayne Wade. Of course Cavs talk, they're the Champs, thats all that matters! Go Cavs!
