During a recent NBA game between the Knicks and the Golden State Warriors, our guest today sent her son, New York Knicks star Julius Randle, a surprise message on the screen at Madison Square Gardens congratulating him on being a first time NBA All Star. Carolyn Kyles is that kind of mom and we get to learn all about her on today’s podcast. Julius always loved basketball and could often be found dribbling around the house and clinging to his ball. Carolyn recognized early on her son’s talent and started him on his journey in organized basketball from a young age. As a single mom, Carolyn tells us how she’s helped Julius stay grounded amidst the hype and noise of the world of elite athletes from his high school years where he fought back from an injury to play in the McDonald's All-American Boys Game and Jordan Brand Classic, through his college years where he broke records at Kentucky, declaring for the draft in 2014 and his 7 years in the NBA. Carolyn talks about what it was like for Julius to play with his idol Kobe Bryant when he was drafted in the first round by the Los Angeles Lakers and the impact Kobe had throughout Julius’ career, how he overcame the tragedy of breaking his leg 14 minutes into the first game of his NBA journey and came back better than ever becoming the youngest Laker since Magic Johnson with a triple double, and how he’s handled the press, social media and the fans now that he’s playing in the mecca of basketball.
Today we are joined by Suzanne Anderson, mom of Memphis Grizzlies NBA star Kyle Anderson. At 18 months old, Kyle was already shooting balls into his Little Tikes Basketball Net and his mom tells us how worried she was because he wasn’t interested in anything else. Needless to say, Suzanne realized early on his fascination with the game would lead to an incredible journey beginning with his high school career where he received national recognition as a Parade All-American, McDonald’s All-American, playing in the Jordan Brand Classic and the Nike Hoop Summit. We talk about the college recruitment process, playing al UCLA for the Bruins, the NCAA investigation and her experience of racial profiling. Suzanne takes us through the thought process behind their decision to declare for the draft. The 2014 draft was the day Kyle’s dream came true when he was chosen as a first round pick by the San Antonio Spurs where he played for four seasons alongside superstars Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard. Suzanne also talks about her own journey on Ancestor.com which led to her discovery of who she is and a trip of a lifetime for her and Kyle and how this new understanding of his heritage has impacted the way he is raising his child and living his life.
When Zanthia Reddish is asked when basketball became a part of her son, NBA star Cam Reddish’s life, she says it was from the time he was born. Basketball is part of who he is. Zanthia shares Cam’s story. From earning Mr. Pennsylvania Basketball in his senior year, to being selected to play in the 2018 McDonald's All-American Boys Game, 2018 Jordan Brand Classic and 2018 Nike Hoop Summit, Cam has had many incredible moments. Zanthia tells us what it was like behind the scenes, including teaming up with Orlando Magic’s Mohamed Bamba while both played high school ball together, playing for Duke University and draft night when Cam was drafted 10th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the 2019 draft. The historic night Zion Williamson went No. 1 overall to the New Orleans Pelicans, followed by R.J. Barrett at No. 3 to the New York Knicks. Cam Reddish then went 10th overall to the Atlanta Hawks. This is the first time Duke has ever had three top-10 picks in the same draft. It is a feat that has only been accomplished twice in the last five decades. We talk about how Cam manages the celebrity that comes with playing in the NBA both the good and the bad, the impact of COVID and the role Zanthia has played in nurturing his career. We hear about Impoweredd, the organization the Reddish family runs, that empowers parents of student-athletes as they support their children in navigating sport and educational programs. We wrap up with some fun facts about Cam.

BallN Gems with 2020 Oregon Signee California Gatorade Player-of-the-Year in 2020. member McDonalds All-American Team in 2020. member Jordan Brand Classic in 2020. Suddenlink 1st-team All-State in 2020.
After averaging 23 points a game his senior year at Robeson High School, getting invited to the Jordan Brand Classic, and becoming PSAL Player Of The Year, why not just make him a McDonald's All American? After getting recruited to Villanova University and scoring 18 points in the last seven minutes of the game to upset LSU, why is he only playing ONE SINGLE MINUTE for the next three games? MG3 gets into detail about it all. His transfer to UMiami after his freshman year wasn't so bad - but again, politics come into play. After graduating with a degree in Sports Administration he finds himself traveling to countries like Canada, Cyprus, Sweden, and many others. That journey wasn't a walk in the park either - especially when money is involved! This interview was important for us! During this pandemic that we're in with COVID-19, it's nearly impossible to find a professional studio to record in. And we were bias about not going virtual because we always gained a personal connection with our guests whenever they came. Saying that, we decided to go through with it and it has been nothing short of refreshing. Malcolm Grant's delivery set the tone from the gate! He certainly is one of our favorite interviews thus far. Thanks for all your support! Big shout to "FUDGE NO GRUDGE" for being a great substitute on episode 4.
