Jason DeFord -- the country music singer known as "Jelly Roll" -- guest-hosted Jimmy Kimmel's late-night show this week. He acted upset when people protested the hostile jokes about President Trump, and claimed they should have voted for Kamala Harris if they wanted Harris jokes. That ignores the entire late-night pattern of ritual Trump loathing.

While this publication mostly focuses on the San Francisco Bay Area, it will also cover these topics wherever they occur. This newsletter started as my public notes on what's happening as tech billionaires and propagandists attempt a takeover of local politics. Longer explanation here. Gil Durán was born in Tulare, California, in 1976. The grandson of Mexican immigrant farmworkers, he got his first taste of work in the fields, but took an interest in journalism after winning the local newspaper's "My Mom Is the Best" contest in the fifth grade. In the tenth grade, his family moved from California to Kentucky, where he dropped out of high school for a year, then returned and befriended an English teacher who encouraged him to apply to college. He graduated DePauw University in 1998 and started his journalism career at the San Jose Mercury News. As the newspaper industry hit turbulence, he pivoted to politics and spent ten years as an advisor to politicians including Jerry Brown, Dianne Feinstein, and Kamala Harris. In 2018, he returned to journalism as California opinion editor of The Sacramento Bee, and then became editorial page editor of the San Francisco Examiner. Now an independent journalist, he publishes two newsletters: The Nerd Reich, focused on extremist tech politics, and FrameLab, focused on political language. DFW Airport is moving forward with Islamic foot-washing stations inside Terminal D bathrooms, and the details are out. The privately funded project registers at around $300,000 and puts dedicated Wudu ablution stations in both the men's and women's concourse restrooms. Officials say it's about keeping floors dry and sinks intact after travelers wash their feet in regular fixtures. Completion is targeted for the end of the year. Terminal D handles the bulk of international traffic. Similar stations already exist at places like Chicago O'Hare and Houston Bush, and DFW has had limited ablution facilities near its interfaith chapel for years. This expands the practice into the main restrooms. The filing calls it basic infrastructure for safety and sanitation. Plenty of Americans are asking a different question: why special plumbing for one ritual while every other traveler just uses the sinks? This isn't about private funding or wet floors alone. It's about what airports decide is worth accommodating in the middle of Texas. Watch the full conversation for the filing details, the practical defense, the cultural signal, and the commonsense pushback. -A South Carolina Senate candidate admits she gets stumped on Taiwan, then returns to explain herself—and Rob gives her credit for simply saying she doesn't know everything, which he contrasts with AOC before Sen. John Kennedy supplies the punch line by comparing the congresswoman to Kamala Harris “with more bartending experience.” -Fred Fleitz of the America First Policy Institute joins Rob to break down Trump's “economic D-Day” against Iran, arguing that sanctions and a blockade could deprive Tehran of hundreds of millions of dollars per day while economic pressure, internal unrest and energy alternatives squeeze the regime. The conversation also ranges through NATO, Ukraine and the possibility of eventual regime change in Iran. -The hour turns deeply personal when Rob shares encouraging news from his PET scan: no distant metastatic spread. After months of fear and uncertainty, he says he finally has a treatment battle plan, thanks listeners for an extraordinary outpouring of prayers and support, and declares that he's ready to fight. Was Charles Manson merely a cult leader—or used the CIA's MKUltra mind-control program? Investigative journalist Tom O'Neill spent 20 years examining Charles Manson, the Manson Family and the murders of Sharon Tate and Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. His acclaimed book, CHAOS: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties, challenged the accepted Helter Skelter story. In 2026, Tom was called to testify before the United States Congress about MKUltra and the files he uncovered. -- Get Tom O'Neill's book Chaos: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Chaos-Truth-Behind-Manson-Murders/dp/1786090627 -- Tom explains why Manson repeatedly escaped prison despite serious parole violations—and reveals the disturbing connections between Manson, the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic and psychiatrist Louis “Jolly” West, a secret CIA contractor involved in LSD, hypnosis and mind-control experiments. We discuss: • Whether Charles Manson was a CIA asset, informant or unwitting experimental subject • The original MKUltra documents Tom discovered after “turning every page” • Sidney Gottlieb, Jolly West and attempts to replace real memories with false ones • Evidence that the CIA gave Congress altered information about MKUltra • How Manson used LSD, hypnosis and psychological conditioning on his followers • Whether MKUltra succeeded—and whether similar programs could still exist today • What a congressional staffer allegedly told Tom about UFOs, UAPs, recovered crafts and recovered beings • Tom's night inside Marilyn Manson's house • Private dinners with Peter Thiel • Joe Rogan, Kamala Harris and the political cost of refusing difficult conversations Tom is careful to distinguish between what the documents prove and what remains an extraordinary—but increasingly difficult to dismiss—theory. The Downballot ran the numbers on 110 special elections since January 2025. Democrats are outrunning Kamala Harris's 2024 margins by 12.5 points on average and Joe Biden's 2020 numbers by 8.4. That implies a roughly 12 point environment in House and Senate races, slightly better than what the same measure showed heading into 2018, when Democrats gained 40 House seats. Brandon Dukes just flipped Pennsylvania's 12th, the 31st legislative flip of the cycle. Democrats have won every one. Ron Brownstein's piece for CNN gets at the other half. The risk to Republicans is subtraction rather than addition: low propensity Trump voters who turn out only when his name is on the ballot, and it will not be on one again. Meanwhile Democratic primary turnout is hitting numbers not seen in decades. Nearly 800,000 in Wisconsin, 1.5 million in Michigan, surges in Texas and Georgia. In Alaska's primary, Mary Peltola outpolled Dan Sullivan by four points. James Talarico's numbers in Texas are worth a look too. Jon, Tommy, and Lovett discuss the new line of attack and the president's response, the end of the 60-day cease-fire agreement with Iran, Trump's decision to scale back joint military exercises with South Korea, and his reaction to the horrible conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. Then, they check in on the fight to take back the Senate, Ken Paxton stealing a $1,000 pen, Mary Peltola rejecting Kamala Harris's endorsement, and a new poll in Michigan that has Abdul El-Sayed down four points to Mike Rogers. Then, Brian Poindexter, a union ironworker, talks to Tommy about his campaign to unseat disgraced congressman Max Miller of Ohio.Hate listening to ads? National Review Senior Editor Charles C.W. Cooke, who hosts the Charles C.W. Cooke Podcast, fills in for Jim on the Tuesday 3 Martini Lunch. Join Charlie and Greg as they discuss Abdul El-Sayed's latest radical economic idea, James Talarico claiming school choice and the SAVE America Act are designed as tools of oppression against black people, actor Jeff Daniels missing the point of his new movie about Reagan, & a Democrat rejects an endorsement from Kamala Harris.First, they shudder as El-Sayed says he would be more aggressive than Bernie Sanders in government taking over private companies. Charlie explains why this is basically totalitarianism. And they fume over how the left has twisted the definition of "democracy" beyond recognition.Next, they shake their heads as Democratic Texas U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico says Voter ID is designed to suppress the black vote and that school choice is a "tool of segregation." Charlie says 80 percent of black voters supporting Voter ID undercuts Talarico's pathetic narrative. And Greg sees a pattern in how Talarico and other Democrats approach these issues. Then, they react to Jeff Daniels suggesting the takeway from his new movie about the 1986 Reagan-Gorbachev summit in Iceland is that John Lennon's Imagine might really come true. Charlie explains the real reason the U.S. won the Cold War, why Daniels is missing the main point of the story, and why Reagan and Imagine have virtually nothing in common. Finally, they get a good laugh as Democrat Alaska U.S. Senate candidate Mary Peltola publicly rejects an endorsement from former Vice President Kamala Harris. But other accounts suggests Peltola asked for the endorsement. Please visit our great sponsors:Brooklyn Beddinghttps://BrooklynBedding.comGet 30% off sitewide Brooklyn Bedding with promo code 3ML. Silicon Valley's overlords have completely lost their minds. Gil Durán, Kamala Harris' former communications director and now a journalist, says Elon Musk, Peter Thiel and the rest of the tech oligarchs have a severe case of “billonaire psychosis” – where unchecked wealth and influence detach them from reality. Kenneth in the Bronx called in to make fun of Tim Walz and Kamala Harris and discuss what's happening with Governor Hochul's policies in New York. George in Port Jefferson called Ken to sound off on Luigi Mangione's case. As a former court clerk, George gave us some insight into what could happen.
It's Friday, August 14th, A.D. 2026. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus India's March for Life draws 5,000 India's fifth National March for Life was held on August 8 and 9 in the city of Chennai, drawing a crowd of 5,000 people eager to proclaim the dignity of human life, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Cardinal Anthony Poola, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, was present at the march and delivered a powerful pro-life address. He said, “Pro-life is the most important mission to be carried out in our dioceses, congregations and institutions. If we do not act now, we may soon be left with institutions – but without people. … Do not be afraid. The Catholic Church in India stands with you to fight for the right to life of every unborn child.” Emma Magdalene of LifeSiteNews.com added, “The number one cause of death today is not COVID, cancer, or even any war. It's abortion. The World Health Organization reports that over 73 million abortions take place globally every year. What a heartbreaking reality.” Proverbs 31:8 says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is Democratic presidential frontrunner Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York is now the frontrunner to become the 2028 Democratic presidential nominee, according to Polymarket odds, marking the first time she has led the pack, reports The Independent. As of Wednesday evening, 21 percent of traders backed the New York leftist, who was trailed by Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom at 17 percent. On rival prediction site Kalshi, the results were the same, with Ocasio-Cortez narrowly topping Newsom. Meanwhile, conventional political polls still put former Vice President Kamala Harris at the top spot, with Newsom in second, and Cortez in a distant fourth. Luigi Mangione expected to plead guilty to assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Luigi Mangione is expected to plead guilty today, August 14th, in his federal case tied to his alleged execution of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson — in an apparent bid to dodge a life sentence, reports the New York Post. The 28-year-old accused killer — who is set to appear at a morning hearing in Manhattan federal court — is charged in the federal case with two counts of stalking resulting in death stemming from his alleged December 2024 cold-blooded murder of the powerful executive on a Manhattan sidewalk. Mangione would still likely face a potential life sentence if he were to plead guilty in federal court, but would hope that U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett doles out a lesser sentence. The heir of a wealthy Maryland family led authorities on a dramatic five-day manhunt before local cops in Altoona, Pennsylvania finally nabbed him while he munched on breakfast at a local McDonald's. (Look at raw bodycam footage: Scroll to the :52 mark) Prosecutors say he plotted the shocking killing to make a violent political statement, leaving behind bullet casings at the crime scene with the words “delay” and “deny” etched into them — echoing a phrase insurers allegedly use to describe dodging paying out claims. Christian weatherman's prayers on-air for safety in San Antonio And finally, San Antonio, Texas-based meteorologist Bill Taylor on KENS-5 TV, a media colleague of mine, went viral for praying live on air on July 15th for the people of the Texas Hill Country who were facing an imminent tornado on the ground. During continuous, commercial-free coverage, he said this. TAYLOR: “You look at the time of day and there are just a lot of people that would be traveling in this area, traveling to work — Saint Hedwig, China Grove, right over Highway 87, right at [Loop] 1604. A number of motorists here. “So, Lord, I pray for protection. God, your sovereignty is what we lean into in moments like this, that drivers stay aware, stay alert. That you give them wisdom. Bless these drivers with wisdom. Keep them safe. Put angels around them of protection as they travel. Thank you, Lord. We're just going to get you home safely.” Later, Taylor offered this prayer. TAYLOR: “Praying for these people in the path of this storm that Lord God, your sovereignty would be here. That You, Lord, would protect everyone in the path of this storm. That You would give wisdom and clarity for families to seek shelter. That these plans would enact now. That people would reach out to those people in this affected area to give them the warning they need. In Your holy name, protect us, Lord.” In a follow-up interview on the Christian Broadcasting Network, Bill Taylor explained what was going through his mind at the time. TAYLOR: “This could be a tornado on the ground at any second, and it was impacting a densely populated area. And knowing the sensitivity of the Hill Country flooding that took more than 100 lives a year ago, knowing how destructive a tornado can be, it just truly came out of the Holy Spirit within me to start praying in that moment for protection, for His sovereignty, for people to be clear and wise enough to seek shelter. “When we're in continuous coverage, there's no producer prompting me. There's no script in weather ever, even on a routine day. We're on our own. We're doing a PowerPoint presentation based on our slides that we put together. We're our own producers. The only time that somebody's in my ear is to tell me how much time I have left. “Well, when we have life-threatening weather, we're on till it's over. We stay on — commercial-free — until it's over. And it's on all platforms between broadcast, then our stream channel, Facebook, YouTube. “And when it happened, the Spirit of God came over me and said, ‘Pray!' Praise God that He delivered, as He always does. He's faithful, and we were protected from what could have been a lot worse.” CBN's Tré Phillips asked about what lesson Christian viewers could glean. PHILLIPS: “So, what would you say to those of us who want to be, like you were, more attuned to that still, small prompting of the Holy Spirit?” TAYLOR: “To do it. Take that step and be obedient to it, because it truly is the hands and feet, the body of Christ. You get that prompting, and when that obedience flows, this is God in action. “'Wherever two or more gather in My name, I shall be there.' (Matthew 18:20) That's why He uses us in this body of Christ, and that the Holy Spirit dwells within us to prompt us in those moments.” 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “God gave us a spirit, not of fear, but of power and love and self-control.” Send Bill Taylor a 3-sentence email to btaylor@kens5.com, thanking him for boldly praying live on the air for the safety of people in the Texas Hill Country. Or send him a physical letter. This would be a great project for your kids! Bill Taylor, KENS 5 TV, 5400 Fredericksburg Rd, San Antonio, TX 78229. Joe Biden was the best American president on climate change by maybe three orders of magnitude. Yet it didn't cement a Kamala Harris victory in 2024, and Trump has since rolled back most of Biden's signature climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act. Today we've got UC Santa Barbara Professor Leah Stokes on to discuss her upcoming book The Carbon Wave: A Story of Democracy, Parenthood, and the Race to Protect Our Planet, to talk about her role in the passage of the IRA, what's left of it, what Trump's victory says about climate policy, and what we should do next time. Check out Leah's newsletter here, her podcast A Matter of Degrees here, and her Atlantic piece about the political success of Bidenomics here.

Dominic Carter is back and pulling absolutely no punches in this fast-paced, laugh-out-loud episode. First, he tackles what he calls the "performative politics" of Kamala Harris and AOC, suggesting it might be time for a family-picnic-style intervention for the Vice President. Then, things take a hilarious turn as Dominic dissects a bizarre undercover police operation in New Jersey, where an officer dressed up as a leafy shrub in the bushes to bust 74 distracted drivers in just six hours. From there, the discussion shifts to the battle over modern socialism—featuring sharp warnings from JD Vance, a scathing critique of controversial Twitch streamer Hassan Piker, and calls from passionate listeners locally and as far away as Australia.

Congressman Ro Khanna says America needs an “economic realignment.”Fresh off a tour through his birthplace of Pennsylvania, Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., said he is “thinking seriously” about running for president in 2028 — a race he called a “breaking point in America” that could lead to a destructive revolution or a new economic order. “If we don't do something dramatically different, we may break,” Khanna tells NPR's Steve Inskeep in this episode of Newsmakers. “Have you met these folks in their 30s? They want pitchforks and torches. They want your scalps … politically.” The California lawmaker — who acknowledged he sits around 2% in the Democratic presidential polls — does not have the name recognition of some other contenders, including his fellow Californians: former Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Gavin Newsom. He has, however, steadily raised his profile through years of action on issues ranging from the Epstein files to a wealth tax. And his possible bid for president comes as the Democratic Party's center and left-wing candidates battle over ideological differences within the party.Khanna said Democrats need to nominate a progressive who will usher in “America's next New Deal” and shouldn't fear being labeled “communists” by Republican opponents, including President Trump. “We've been calling the guy a fascist for 10 years and he's won two terms,” Khanna said. “Labels usually don't matter in American politics.”Newsmakers is where you'll find NPR's biggest interviews. In less than three months, the midterms will be upon us. Should we be panicked? Confident? Somewhere in between? Brittany Packnett Cunningham sits down with political strategist and Native Land Pod co-host Angela Rye to talk about all of it: the rise of progressive candidates, what Democrats would do if they had “nuts and ovaries,” and why Black voters continue to shape the future of American politics. (And don't miss Angela's words for people who keep telling Kamala Harris not to run…)

She starts as one of the only women in her engineering program, builds a career in telecommunications, becomes a single mom, then pivots again into a classroom where she spends 20 years helping kids learn math and find their footing. That alone is a story worth hearing. But what happens next is where the imagination kicks in: she turns a painful family season and the loss of her mother into a children's book series that helps kids laugh, feel seen, and believe in themselves. We talk about her 10-book bug series and why “small, overlooked creatures” are the perfect way to teach big ideas like self-acceptance, resilience, friendship, and being different on purpose. She shares the meaning behind The Bug Who Wanted To Be A Bird, a story about a self-doubting ladybug who learns that chasing dreams starts with accepting who you are. We also dig into how her teaching experience shaped her approach to social-emotional learning, why reading works better when it's joyful, and what she hopes families discuss after the last page. You'll also hear about publishing in multiple languages, collaborating on bright, vivid illustrations, and navigating parenting in a world full of screens and early social media. Abdul El-Sayed got caught on camera saying he “hates Mackinac so much.” Not a joke. Not a throwaway line. Straight hate for one of the most iconic places in Michigan. Mackinac Island is car-free and has horse-drawn carriages, Victorian hotels, fudge shops — the whole deal. A million people visit every year. El-Sayed walked through it during his old governor's run, noted that if he won, it would be the governor's summer home, and he still couldn't hide how much he can't stand it. His response? The most American place in Michigan can't ban cars. This is the same progressive running for Senate who claims to fight for regular people while openly sneering at a place those people actually love. When candidates talk about your state like it's beneath them, it tells you everything. Pat also covered: • Puerto Rico rationing water as severe drought hits the U.S. territory. • Kamala Harris tries to explain the SAVE America Act … and completely fails. • Progressive Democrats scramble to distance themselves from Hasan Piker. • Mamdani's new pilot program tells New York parents to leave kids at the park with strangers? • Day 58: Mitch is still missing, but we meet his in-home caregiver. Trump just called off a massive weekend attack on Iran after Gulf allies begged him to stand down, saying a deal was imminent. Now Iran is out here claiming no talks are even planned. President Trump told reporters the strike was ready to go, but Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and even Iran itself asked him to pull back because they thought a deal covering the Strait of Hormuz and the nuclear program was close. He said negotiations were set to begin Monday afternoon. Hours later, Iran's Foreign Ministry flat-out denied it — no talks scheduled, no negotiators moving, nothing. Iran's foreign minister is conveniently on a pilgrimage and unavailable. Classic. This is the same regime that has been choking global energy markets and racing toward a bomb. Trump is keeping the military option hot while testing whether Iran is serious or just playing the same old game. Regular Americans watching oil prices, Israel's security, and another endless Middle East mess need to understand what is actually happening here.
