En Nueva York la elección de Zohran Mamdani, un demócrata socialista de 34 años, fue la noticia de la jornada. Con un participación muy elevada, Mamdani ganó con el 51% de los votos frente al exgobernador Andrew Cuomo, que obtuvo el 41% y al republicano Curtis Sliwa, que se quedó en un 7%. Su campaña, centrada en el alto coste de vida, prometía subidas de impuestos a los ricos, congelar alquileres y servicios municipales gratuitos como el transporte y las guarderías. Pero cumplir estas promesas no será fácil ya que la gobernadora Kathy Hochul no parece dispuesta a elevar la carga fiscal. Además, su victoria complica la relación de la ciudad con el gobierno federal, ya que Donald Trump había advertido que reducirá al mínimo la entrega de fondos federales a Nueva York si Mamdani ganaba. El vencedor es hijo de inmigrantes y tiene un historial político muy breve, pero supo capitalizar el descontento con el actual alcalde, Eric Adams, y la división del voto en el centro del espectro.
