Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Friday, 23 August 2024. My name is Nelson John. Let's get started. Indian equity benchmark index, the Nifty, extended its winning streak to six consecutive sessions on Thursday, rising by 0.17 per cent. BSE's Sensex too saw a surge of 0.18 per cent at the end of the trading session.  Zomato is making strides by entering another duopoly market. It already competes with Swiggy in the food delivery market, and now it is entering entertainment and ticketing, dominated by BookMyShow. The company is planning to acquire Paytm's ticketing business and rebrand it as a separate entity called ‘District'. Zomato will acquire the business for a little over 2,000 crore rupees. However, launching District as a separate app could pose challenges in user convenience and operational costs, Mint's startup correspondents Priyamvada C and Sowmya Ramasabramanian explain. Despite these potential hurdles, analysts are optimistic, predicting significant revenue growth for Zomato through this expansion.Ronnie Screwvala's Swades Foundation has stirred up interest in social stock exchanges or SSEs by raising 10 crore rupees on the National Stock Exchange's SSE. This move has other non-profits curious, but the complex compliance requirements are a bit of a deterrent. Since the concept launched in early 2023, just a handful of NGOs have actually raised funds through SSEs. Introduced in India in 2019, SSEs are designed to help non-profits raise funds transparently, hoping to draw individual donors and build trust. Mint's Sneha Shah and Nehal Chaliawala write that allthough there's potential for SSEs to make fundraising more accessible, experts caution that they may not offer significant advantages over existing channels like crowdfunding. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent trip to Ukraine marks a significant stride in India's foreign policy, especially following his visit to Russia. The move showcases the fact that the country can maintain ties with both Russia and Ukraine while navigating its relationships with Western allies like the US. Modi's visit—the first by an Indian prime minister since diplomatic ties were established 30 years ago—aims to enhance relations in sectors like agriculture, infrastructure, and education, among others. Shweta Singh, associate professor at the department of international relations, South Asian University, explains the significance of the PM's trip to the war-torn Eastern European nation.Get ready for a government-owned OTT platform. Prasar Bharati, India's public broadcaster, is diving into the crowded digital scene with its own OTT platform. This new venture aims to feature content from private broadcasters and indie creators, potentially expanding streaming access, especially in rural areas, Mint's entertainment and media correspondent Lata Jha reports. Yet, it faces stiff competition from giants like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, not to mention the free content powerhouse, YouTube. While the platform may initially focus on news and movies—areas with fewer digital rights headaches—luring fresh content could be tough. Prasar Bharati will need to navigate these waters carefully, possibly leveraging its niche to attract viewers who aren't the primary target for mainstream OTT platforms. Korean esports giant Krafton just kicked off a major gaming tournament in India, the Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series 2024, with a juicy 2 crore rupees prize pool. Exciting times, right? But here's the twist: despite the hype, many pro gamers in India are struggling to make money off their gameplay and social media. Mint's Shouvik Das and Pratishtha Bagai write that unlike in the West, where gamers make bank by streaming on platforms like YouTube and Twitch, Indian gamers are hitting roadblocks with monetization. The scene here is pretty new, and most of the audience is quite young, which complicates things. However, there's a silver lining—industry experts believe that as today's young gamers grow up and start calling the shots, they'll pump up the esports economy.   Show notes:Mint Explainer: Zomato's Paytm deal and its big bet on entertainmentNGOs eye social stock exchanges, but compliance barriers remainMint Primer | PM Modi in Ukraine: Can India play a role in ending the war?Prasar Bharati's OTT ambition: Can it compete in a crowded market?Indian gaming influencers reach for the stars, but it's tricky

Welcome back to First Principles! If you've been listening to us for a while, you know that First Principles covers a lot of topics. Leadership, organization building, decision making, learning methods, careers, life principles, habits, people management, parenting..it goes on.But if there's a common thread that connects them all together, it's entrepreneurship. Thus, today we have a “supercut” episode about the lives of founders. You're probably familiar with our supercut episodes. Every now and then we go back to our earlier episodes and stitch together some of the most interesting conversations from them. And so, we've put together this special supercut episode that takes you through the lives of five accomplished, original and diverse founders. They are Kunal Shah, the founder and CEO of CRED, Srikanth Velamakanni, the co-founder and Group CEO of Fractal, Ronnie Screwvala, the co-founder and Chairperson of UpGrad, Gaurav Munjal, the co-founder and CEO of Unacademy, and Smita Deorah, the co-founder and CEO of LEAD School. We cover their childhood, their careers and the choices they made, all of which helped them become the people they are today.Of course, I'll urge you to go back and listen to our full episodes – but this if you're not caught up on our older episodes, this is the perfect place to start. Here's a quick glance at the conversations in this episode: I spoke with Kunal earlier this year, in a conversation full of wonderful analogies and sharp perceptions of the world. And how Kunal's childhood and teenage years, when he was thrust into work to support his family, led him to the core philosophy behind CRED.Next up is Srikanth Velamakanni, the co-founder and Group CEO of Fractal. And Srikanth's childhood, too, is an important part of his journey as a founder. Especially when you consider the fact that growing up, he decided never to go into business. Because his father would often tell him that there was no such thing as an honest businessman. And yet, in 200o, Srikanth pooled in 2 lakh rupees to build Fractal. That's right – they've been around for nearly 25 years.Srikanth tells me what changed. Next, we have Ronnie Screwvala, the chairperson and co-founder of UpGrad. Ronnie's on the opposite end of the spectrum from Srikanth – growing up, he told his parents he's never going to work for someone else. Ronnie calls it serendipity – or even karma or destiny, and explains how he went from earning 500 rupees on the weekends to running multiple successful and colourfully varied organisations. This brings me to Gaurav Munjal, who you will know as the co-founder and CEO of Unacademy. And his story starts in college – when he ran a very successful blog devoted to - wait for this -  the actress Priyanka Chopra. And then a facebook page that earned him thousands of dollars from ads.He was a content creator before it was even a profession — and he explains how this led to Unacademy. Lastly, we have Smita Deorah, the co-founder and CEO of LEAD school. Like Gaurav and Ronnie, she's built a massive institution in education, too.Smita built LEAD school as a way to completely rejig the education system and everything that it's built of: the curriculum, pedagogy, technology, even the parents' mindset. And like our other guests, she has a very interesting story driving her too – and it starts when her daughter was only six months old. Thanks for being part of the First Principles community — you can now submit questions for our upcoming guests, book recommendations & image submissions for the First Principles podcast and newsletter and much more, here. This is First Principles— The Ken's fortnightly leadership podcast. The Ken is India's first subscriber-only business journalism platform. In this podcast, Peyush Bansal, founder and CEO of Lenskart, India's largest eyewear company talks to Karthik B. Reddy, co-founder and managing partner of Blume Ventures,  the importance of hiring the right people in building long-lasting businesses, the pathological obsession of founders to solve a particular problem, which is essential in India's small market, and balancing short-term objectives with long-term goals.  Bansal built Bagskart, Watchkart, Jewelkart, before focusing his energies on Lenskart, and the disturbing statistic where said that 75% of people in India who need specs are not them helped “focus his vision.” And as a reward for his clarity of purpose, IDG Ventures was soon on board.  Bansal was also inspired by Uniqlo's growth in the West, where it managed to create differentiation in the same category of products. He gives the example of shoes: People no longer just want sports shoes. There's one for walking, one for fast-paced running, and one for slow running. This trend is expected to continue in the future, with eyewear products being offered to cater to every single need of a consumer.  Bansal also emphasizes the need for long-term thinking and sustainability in the business. They discuss the success of Maruti and the importance of considering the long-term impact of their decisions. Peyush also shares his thoughts on wealth and the influence of Indian entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala, who has significantly impacted his outlook on life and career.  For more on the importance of hiring right, check out Naveen Tewari of Inmobi's episode on X-Unicorns.  https://open.spotify.com/episode/2b0PgICcwg2DQI49zqpWay https://blume.vc/podcasts/blume-podcast/naveen-tewari-on-the-quest-for-a-purposeful-life-the-beauty-of-creating-versus-competing-and-building-a-culture-of-compounding-trust All episodes: https://open.spotify.com/show/227rW4Ee4ob6wRT8U7pJ8s https://podcasts.apple.com/in/podcast/blume-podcast/id1651800944 https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cub21ueWNvbnRlbnQuY29tL2QvcGxheWxpc3QvNGJiMzM3MDQtNjE1Yi00MDU0LWFhZTktYWNlNTAwZmQ0MTk3L2IxZjk3NGJiLWUxMWMtNDZlYy1hNzFkLWIwMTgwMDlkZjk1Ny8xMTViMzZlYi0yNzY0LTRiZTEtYThmYy1iMDE4MDA5ZGY5ODEvcG9kY2FzdC5yc3M

And trust me when I say this, I haven't seen many 30-something founders who are as restless, ambitious and driven as he is.Ronnie is the chairperson and co-founder of upGrad, an online higher education company last valued at over $2.2 billion. He insists, emphatically, that upGrad is neither a startup nor an edtech."Edtech", he says, was "a parlance invented by people who wanted to go out raise money, and VCs who liked the word Tech as it was the flavour for the last five years to invest in."Instead, he says, he tells the 5000+ employees who work at upGrad to have faith that they're going to build something really valuable over the next 5-10 years. And that you cannot have report cards on companies measured over six months or a year. But that's not all Screwvala does.He co-founded Swades Foundation, a philanthropic organisation that works across 2000 villages in Maharashtra. He runs RSVP Movies, a film production company. Their last valuation was $462 million, during their Series F round in February of 2020. #9 Jupiter: The company was started by Jitendra Gupta whose first big startup success was fintech startup Citrus Pay. Zepto is a soonicorn, they were last valued at $900 million back in May of 2022, and their investors have poured $360 million into the company. #7 Purplle: This company was incorporated in 2011 as Manash Lifestyle Private Limited, by three IITans, Manish Taneja, Rahul Dash, and Suyash Katyayani and it is a omnichannel beauty startup like Nykaa. SatoriXR, a tech startup in Chennai that offers 3D and augmented reality technologies for engineering design and manufacturing, has won Grameen Foundation India's first Tech4Inclusion challenge. And entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala's UpGrad has doubled its private valuation in new funding round, ET reports. Notes: SatoriXR, a tech startup in Chennai that offers 3D and augmented reality technologies for engineering design and manufacturing, has won Grameen Foundation India's first Tech4Inclusion challenge, the foundation said in a LinkedIn post yesterday. With a grant from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Grameen conceptualised the Technology for Growth and Inclusion Challenge and announced it in August last year. Competitors were invited to work in the Augmented Reality and Machine Learning space to design a mobile application for educating rural customers and banking agents. SatoriXR, founded by Mahesh Ramamurthy in 2018, built the prototype for a gamified AR learning application, to facilitate financial literacy and inclusion on its eponymous SatoriXR platform. The company will now be awarded the contract to build the full-scale application for Grameen, which will then be used by its banking correspondent partners. SatoriXR was picked from among three finalists. The other two were Deeploop Technologies and MuCrest Technologies. Clari, a Silicon Valley company that makes a revenue tracking software platform for businesses, has acquired India's Wingman, a conversational AI provider for sales teams, the companies said in a press release yesterday. Clari didn't reveal the terms of the deal, but the entire team of Wingman, including its three founders, is expected to join the US company, according to the press release. The acquisition of Wingman gives Clari's revenue collaboration and governance platform the ability to analyse customer and employee conversations, extract valuable AI-based insights, and reliably predict all revenue outcomes. Wingman goes beyond the limits of similar conversation intelligence tools by helping revenue-critical teams act in the moment when it matters, the companies said in the release. Wingman, a Y Combinator portfolio company, was founded in 2018 by Shruti Kapoor, Muralidharan Venkatasubramanian and Srikar Yekollu. The company had raised $2.3 million in 2019 from investors including early-stage deep tech VC firm Speciale Invest. UpGrad Education, founded by Ronnie Screwvala, has raised $225 million in funding from investors including billionaire James Murdoch's Lupa Systems and US testing and assessment provider Educational Testing Service, Economic Times reports. In today's video, we cover the story of Nykaa's nayika – how Falguni Nayar built a profitable $13 billion startup in India. A rewarding experience at Kotak and learnings from Uday Kotak: When Falguni Nayar joined Kotak Mahindra – it was just an NBFC. She was responsible for setting up their investment banking arm – Kotak Mahindra Capital. However, when Falguni decided to follow her husband to London, Uday Kotak didn't want to lose one of his best employees – so he asked her to set up Kotak Mahindra's London office from scratch and when her husband moved to New York, she followed him to the US and also established Kotak Mahindra's New York office as well. This experience gave her an experience for a lifetime. An itch to start up before 50: While working at Kotak, Falguni had the opportunity to work with entrepreneurs like Ronnie Screwvala – who went on to build a media and entertainment empire when the sector was in its nascent stages, which Falguni helped him take public in 2005. She also helped take PVR Cinema to IPO – a company built by Ajay Bijli, which was responsible for building India's first multiplex cinemas. These experiences had a profound impact on her and she decided that she wanted to plunge into the world of entrepreneurship before she was 50. Birth of Nykaa: For a large majority of India's female population, that's kajal and lipstick was all there was when it came to beauty, and a major reason for this was the lack of education around these products. She had a hunch that if she could somehow introduce these women to this new world of beauty, if she could educate them on these products and how to use them, then her idea would be successful. And so, in April of 2012, Nykaa was born. Building from scratch and early challenges: When she started building Nykaa – things didn't go easy for her. In the first three years of building Nykaa, she had lost three CTOs consecutively. On the operations side, the company was struggling to fulfil 10 orders per day, and getting them delivered on time was a pipe dream. Angry customers were calling at all hours, demanding an explanation for why their products hadn't shown up yet. Needless to say, things were stressful at Nykaa, and the startup's team of 7 quickly became a team of two. Falguni and her daughter would stay up until 3 AM some nights, packing boxes in between customer support calls - but these nights were important. Falguni and her daughter spent time in the trenches, they suffered, they lost sleep building the company, and so as it slowly grew. 3 C's of Nykaa - Curation, Content and Convenience: When she started building Nykaa – things didn't go easy for her. Falguni and her daughter spent time in the trenches, they suffered, they lost sleep building the company, and so as it slowly grew. From sustainable growth to IPO: he didn't want to sacrifice equity to grow quickly if she could grow sustainably, and so that's what she did. She was planning the startup's IPO as early as 2017, and as we all know today, looking back, this initial public offering was arguably the most successful in Indian history.

Audio infotainment has for long been a medium close to the heart, with people soaking in on cricket commentaries or prime-time bulletins emerging from their radio sets. But a lot of that changed some thirty years ago, and the once-ubiquitous transistors, as radio sets were popularly called, yielded space to a barrage of television soap operas and, more recently, the YouTube phenomenon. But it is now making a comeback in the new avatar called podcasts. Podcasts are on-demand radio shows streamed over the internet and there is now a plethora of free content–from interview shows to fiction story-telling–out there on the web. Though a global phenomenon, the podcasting boom in India is not only unique but also stupendous in how quickly both listeners and producers have embraced the new medium. A rapid surge in original podcast shows has left the audience spoilt for choices. News publishers have launched podcast divisions, while business firms are using it as a brand-promotion channel. Podcasts have become a social media extension of sorts for celebrity figures like the Obamas, scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson, and others who regularly churn out new episodes to keep their audience hooked. However, underneath the glut, a special class of upstart podcast-creators is emerging. Armed with free tools on the internet and an off-the-shelf microphone, these self-starters are not only bringing fresh original content to the fore but are also creating a brand name for themselves. The democratic nature of podcasts–easy to produce and feature on endless aggregator platforms–is also a key enabler. Self-starters Ashdin Doctor, the creator of Habit Coach podcast, is a Mumbai-based fitness and lifestyle consultant. His journey from being unfit through his 20s, to changing his lifestyle upside down through obsessive reading on nutrition and health, prompted him to take it up as a career. Doctor wanted to deliver his learning to a larger audience on the internet and started a podcast a year ago. “Initially it would take me four to five hours to record a few minutes,” says Doctor, who publishes five-minute episodes each, on one actionable habit, nutritional advice or lifestyle recommendation. One year and 166 episodes later, he says podcasting has helped him get hundreds of queries and engagements on his social media pages. “Now I publish three podcasts a week. I write my own scripts, and record the episodes as per a schedule,” he says adding that he gets 150,000 listens every month. Through he initially tried his hand on Anchor, a free internet tool to create podcasts, Doctor’s first show was recorded in partnership with IVM. IVM, or Indus Vox Media, is a podcasting network founded by Amit Doshi and Kavita Rajwade in 2015. In many ways, IVM is a unique company and a major force behind popularising Indian original shows. The company functions as a network, production house and distribution platform solely focused on Indian creators, and now boasts on 95 original titles on its platform. A skim through its Android app best captures the pulse of local shows: Varun Duggirala, founder of ad agency The Glitch, interviews top marketing voices on the changing nature of advertising on his show ‘Advertising is Dead’; Finance consultants Anupam Gupta shares personal financial tips on ‘Paisa Vaisa’; while ‘Kini aur Nani’, hosted by children book-writer Nutran Raj, is trying re-create the experience of grandma’s bed-time stories on radio. Personalities like investor-entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala and comedian Cyrus Broacha also have popular podcasts running on IVM. “The last six months have been the most exciting times I can think of,” IVM’s Doshi wrote in a blogpost in March, when the outfit completed four years. “Everything from the growth in content catalog, to the huge growth in traffic and name recognition, the avalanche of job applicants, the constantly increasing interest from brands and VCs, and, mo

In this Network Capital podcast, Ronnie Screwvala, the founder of Upgrad, discusses how to grapple with failure and reinvent oneself. He talks about the role of serendipity in his life and what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Ronnie is a first generation entrepreneur who failed his Bachelor of Commerce in college but that did not deter his intent to start up on his own at a time where there was no eco-system for PE Funding or bank debt to start ups. His first foray was Cable TV in India and for the first two years of that journey he found no takers and only advise to treat it as a failed start up and move on, but with him staying at it he was credited with having pioneered Cable TV for all of India. Entrepreneurship is about finding and seizing opportunities and moving on from failures and Ronnie saw an opportunity in toothbrush manufacturing and after many setbacks went on to build one of the largest toothbrush operations in India. The other opportunity was TV Home Shopping but it was well before its time and was a big failure, but not enough for him to question if he should stick it out as an entrepreneur. Ronnie went on to build a media and entertainment company – UTV, where post many pivots and four almost near bankruptcies and 15 years of focussed work with strong co-founders and a large team, it scaled to a size spanning all aspects of Content and Platform and then he divested UTV to The Walt Disney Co in 2012. Perception in most cases is larger than reality and so in spite of so many failures, Newsweek termed him the Jack Warner of India, Esquire rated him one of the 75 most influential people of the 21st century and Fortune as Asia’s 25 most powerful. Having lived it and seen the misconception that it’s all about quick success and that failure is to frown on - he authored a book Dream With Your Eyes Open as his commitment to champion entrepreneurship and evangelize failure. Ronnie got the term “cat with nine lives” attached to him by colleagues and peers for the number of times he had failed, but reflecting on his setbacks and counting on his main virtue that success can never be timed and staying the course is the only option, Ronnie in his second innings decided to deepen his commitment to making India a better place through a focus on two of the largest sunrise sectors - Online Education & the not for profit Rural/Social space. He is Co-Founder & Chairman of upGrad which zeros in on the massive Online Education market and the fact that Learning for every working professional is now a lifelong commitment. He, along with his wife Zarina, are the Co-Founders of The Swades Foundation, which is committed to empower one million lives in rural India every 5-7 years through a 360 degree model spanning Water, Sanitation, Health, Education and Livelihood to lift them out of poverty permanently. As a hobby and passion Ronnie loves to tell stories that must to told via movies with his new brand RSVP and he owns 3 sports teams under the brand U Mumba in Kabaddi, Volleyball and Football even though he has never played any of the sports himself.

"One does not have to hold on to a failed venture for dear life, what you need is your reservoir of confidence that you haven't failed even though the venture may have failed." On episode 2 of 'Dreaming With Your Eyes Open' Ronnie Screwvala talks to Amit Doshi about why stories of failures are way more interesting than stories of successes. He starts off by briefly mentioning an anecdote from new year's eve which made him look at things from a different perspective, how failure of a venture doesn't mean failure of a person, how age shouldn't be a deterrent for entrepreneurship and finally gives an insight into setting the right expectations for your venture.
