Lacy, fingerless gloves. Neon colors. Legwarmers over spandex, with a complementary headband. Parachute pants. Shoulder pads. Swatch watches. Permed hair with massive bangs, plastered in place with hair spray. If you've ever worn any of the above, you're going to love time-traveling back to the 1980s with us! What would YOU choose as 3 defining entertainment events, works, or artists of the decade? That's the question we asked ourselves as we revisited the time period that brought us Gameboys, the VHS craze, Alex P. Keaton, Madonna, and “Cats” on Broadway. Recognizing that we've already featured some 80s megahits like “E.T.” and “Back to the Future” in previous episodes, what OTHER prominent shows, moments, or icons did we highlight in this totally rad 80s episode? Legwarmers. Socks and Sandles. Skinny jeans. Goretex puffer jackets. Fashion is an ever-evolving aspect of culture, representing people's opinions on clothing, footwear, and accessories. But how do our brains process this complex form of expression? In this week's episode of That Neuroscience Guy, we discuss the neuroscience behind our fashion sense.
The Loving Paupers have a brand new album out. Ladders! Who are the Loving Paupers you ask, they are an amazing band that plays "Melancholy Roller Skating Rink Reggae," according to Jump Up Records's Chuck Wren. And you know what, he's exactly right. So today, we have on their guitarist/songwriter Jorge Pezzimenti. But we have so much more to talk about than just Loving Paupers' new Victor Rice produced album. We dive deep into Jorge's ska past with 90s ska-punk band The Decepticonz (as previously discussed on the Patrick Stump and Jamie Woolford episodes), as well as his time in DC's one and only Pietasters. We even touch on his 80s cover band The Legwarmers and some of his side projects, like the infamous Jorge and the Landladies record Monobound. We also talk about the influential role that MU330 had on The Decepticonz, Too Hep Records (This Aren't Two Tone, Metalliska), and we learn which song The Legwarmers were playing when the police shut down their show at the Kansas House in 2001 (Hint: it was "Eye of the Tiger") We also talk about the time Jorge was arrested just before a Pietasters gig, how the Pietasters once backed soul icon James Brown, and he tells us some important Jamaican records like Desmond Dekker's Music Like Dirt and The Heptones Night Food. Catbite gives The Loving Paupers a shoutout in Bearded Gentlemen, we learn how Tango music informed Jorge's song "Let's Not Rewind These," and find out whether the Decepticonz had an oboe player in the band. Plus we devote a little time to 2000s-era hipster bands with weird stylized names. All caps, no caps, weird letter in the center capped for unknown reasons. It's all there! Support the show

A Sassy Little Podcast for Getting Over It with Sandra Ann Miller
With a PhD in Nutrition Science and Policy in Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition & Exercise Physiology, Rachele Pojednic knows what she's talking about when it comes to the importance of exercise. With what she describes as "a real marketing problem," exercise is too often associated with weight loss, and physical activity is too important to miss because of bad PR. This episode is not meant to be ableist, sizeist or promoting diet culture. Exercise is really a form of self-love and self-care that has benefits beyond the physical, include those to our mental and emotional health. We talk about: Exercise is not a punishment and needs to be disassociated from weight loss. You change the oil in your car and get it a tune up. Exercise is no different. You need to rev that engine. What counts as exercise? Anything that gets you moving and, yes, dancing and gardening counts. Exercise is something just for you. It can be meditative and spiritual. Find your place on the movement spectrum. Making it routine helps. Be patient; don't give up. BOOK REC: BJ Fogg's TINY HABITS: THE SMALL CHANGES THAT CHANGE EVERYTHING. Body awareness. The best exercise is what you love and will keep doing. Excercise for chronic illness, chronic pain and aging. The patience (and humility) required when going from being sedentary to exercising. Newsflash: The 90s are back! (Rollerblading and scrunchies included.) Without stimulus or stress, things are going to change. The truth to, "Move it or lose it!" Finding things (for free) online. Sitting in front of a screen (another reason to get up and move). The power of push-ups. Powerlifting in your 80s. Jane Fonda. Legwarmers. Options for those with disabilities. Adaptive sports. Physical and occupational therapy. Giving yourself grace. Fighting to get insurance codes for exercise. Getting nutrition, exercise, behavior change and self-care taught in medical school (and how Harvard dropped their summer, 3-class course on this...those bastards). Nutrition and exercise are the beginning of medicine, not the last resort. Changing the system. Life and health in rural America. How this is all more complicated than eating better and getting off our asses. One thing is for sure - 80’s fashion will always be in our blood (even if one of us was barred from wearing denim as a kid). With Chris away this week, Eve, Courtney and Lori talk about our look when we were growing up and how our style has evolved over the years. Recently, Joe went all ‘fluffy' marketer on LinkedIn and made the statement “kindness sells” - and adaption of the old ad-land adage, sex sells. But, does it? Does being kind drive ROI or is it just verbose marketing bullshit? With the world going through various chaotic events, it feels like we could all do with more kindness - more humans being nice to each other. And, it feels like being kind is a differentiator that is likely to help us sell more. But… what did I mean, and is Joe just a fluffy marketer?
Where were you in the mid 80s? If your answer is wearing thigh-high leg-warmers while sweating with Jane Fonda to some totally awesome synth music, Agnes was right there with you. Fast forward 25 years, quarantine bodies are less than svelt, and Agnes thought it would be a good idea to find Jane again. Needless to say, it's a situation ripe for injury and entertainment. Meanwhile, Leona is staying in shape by ripping out perfectly good bathrooms and threatening her nearest and dearest with heavy tools. So grab a leotard and join us, lets sweat this one out together... six feet apart. Don't believe us? Check out this Vogue article detailing why this is still THE BEST WORKOUT EVER!https://www.vogue.com/article/jane-fonda-workout-videos-health-aerobics-yoga-class-pass They're not quite the glorious neon leg warmers of days gone by, but they'll do (thank you, H&M):https://www2.hm.com/en_us/productpage.0661192001.html Should you remodel your own bathroom? This Halloween, the DING team get real about fear with the help of some 80s dance track realness.
I met The Silver Nightingale through Sree's NYT Readalong and I am looking forward to our conversation today... The story of how I got my name is part of the larger story of the development of my solo flute act. When I lived in Syracuse, I played in lots of eclectic rock/blues bands (Laura and the Legwarmers, Friends, Felicidad, and No Sense of Humor were some of the more interesting names), folk/rock duos, and also started to play solo for yoga classes, spiritual retreats, food coops, anti-nuclear rallies and such. I really enjoyed the freedom and creativity playing solo allowed me, as well as the meditative qualities of the music. During this period, I started composing solo flute pieces, as well as music for my bands. Listeners liked what I was doing, and many people told me they found my solo music peaceful and healing. Receiving a great response to my new solo work, I decided to focus on doing a solo act in the fairly unusual configuration of solo flute, and with the help of local guitar legend and producer Mark Doyle, made a demo tapeShortly thereafter, at the end of 1986, I left Syracuse for New Orleans, feeling it would be fertile ground for a full-time music career. While there, ex-Laura and the Legwarmers bandmate Diana Trifoso (also a jewelry designer and face-painter) came to town, and we spent an afternoon sitting on the floor of my David St. apartment brainstorming.I wanted to create an image suggesting elegance, opulence, upscale dining, and light, airy, fluid qualities. I wanted silver in the name to suggest the silver flute, the silver used with fine china, silver coins, silver jewelry (I have always preferred silver jewelry to gold). I also wanted to conjure the melodic, "singing" qualities of the flute. We sat on the floor and made a list of 58 names - Some of the also-rans were Silver Sonata, Liquid Silver and Silver Dreams.

On a Happy Note The first part of this audio was recorded with my 8 year old niece Riley who asked if we could record together! Sleepover Quote of the Week "Before you call someone lazy or judge them, try to imagine their perspective, beliefs, and abilities and forget yours. That is, respond with curiosity and empathy. When you do, I predict you’ll find yourself understanding their choices. You may not like their beliefs and choices, but you’ll understand them." -Joshua Spodek -------------------------------------------------- Thank you for tuning in! I like how you can clearly review your projects and stash. You can also share your projects on facebook easily with the Wooly App.The reason why I love Wooly is that the Wooly app inserts your pictures first on your projects page instead of last like Ravelry does. This helps people on Iphones and Ipads easily update their project pages with the latest progress on their projects. You are able to see the basic information about the pattern such as which yarn weight, yardage and needle size is recommended if entered on your project page, however you are not able to see your pattern instructions or see the details about your yarn unless you specifically loaded that information when and if you entered it in your stash. This is because Ravelry had previously limited the types of information they would release to the developers to make the applications.I love Ravelry for access to Patterns and Yarns as well as sharing information in the forums. Hopefully Ravelry will release these features to the developers so that they will be able to be added in version 2.0WOOLY APP DrawingEnter under the Homespun Journey Ravelry Group Under the Episode 24 YarnCon thread.
