Nostalgia is our podcast's bread and butter (that and actual bread and butter, which is delicious). And if one episode perfectly encapsulates that feeling, it was our deep dive into the talent show that came before any of the modern shows like "Britain's Got Talent" or "American Idol." So sit back, turn on that public access channel, and listen back to our episode on Frank Masi's legendary "Stairway to Stardom"!~~~Turn your dials to station Manhattan Neighborhood Network station 13 because we are going to explore the confidentially, untalented denizens of Stairway to Stardom.Learn about the most optimistic master of ceremonies, Frank Masi, who unwittingly gave birth to America's obsession of televised shock and awe.Rob gives Ray a lesson in the history of public access television and how the Government's attempt to connect communities went horribly awry, the dreams of Frank Masi, the song stylings if Lucille "Hairdresser" Cataldo, debating if Star Search stole Frank's idea, and why YouTube took over the realm of public access. In this episode of Ska Boom I speak to Phil DeJean, (AKA: Checker Phil) who is a New York City ska icon. If you've been to a big NYC ska show then you've seen Phil. He's hard to miss with his slightly modified take on Don King's hairstyle. There is no denying that along with a number of key bands, Phil has been responsible for keeping the ska flame burning in the Big Apple since the mid 1990's courtesy of his long-running and entirely entertaining Manhattan Neighborhood Network cable access TV show "The Checkerboard Kids" which is a ska influenced variety show with funny skits, interviews and music videos. If there was a night time Emmy for cable access variety shows with a ska theme, then Phil would have a mantle full of them. You used to have to live in Manhattan to see the show, but now you can watch them all on YouTube. Just about every major U.S. ska band has paid a visit to perform on Phil's show. He is a true treasure of the scene here and I have nothing but love and respect for the passion and energy he puts into keeping his show going. Phil and I discuss his "ska conversion" experience and the origins of The Checkerboard Kids since 1995 and what its like to be a cable access TV star in New York City and a character in a ska themed comic book.

This week on BeREAL, Diana and Ednesha are joined by Kimberly Moore to discuss Black women wellness and self-care. Along with Ednesha, Kim is the Co- Creator of Black Woman Be Whole a service that focuses on mental health and self care advocacy for Black Women. BWBW provides services for Black Women to gather and explore their healing, joy, connection and sisterhood in judgement free spaces. She has produced a documentary short film about mental health in the Black community, and her show on Manhattan Neighborhood Network, Convos with Kim, interviews women of color who are doing their part to make the world a better place. Kim and Ednesha begin the episode by explaining how they met. Despite attending the same high school, they didn't become close friends, and realize their passions intertwined until college. From there they explain how Black Woman Be Whole came to be, and what they saw in the people around that made them realize change was needed. They discuss the common problem of black female voices being drowned out by white voices and male voices alike. BWBW was founded to raise up black female voices and build strong friendships within the community. Kim and Ednesha then walk Diana through the process they utilize at Black Woman Be Whole. Through workshops and retreats, the two hope to erase the stigmas that infringe upon Black women wellness practices. At the end of the episode, Kim talks about how she personally cares for herself. She explains how music helps her center herself and develop good self-care habits. Thank you so much for tuning into BeREAL this week. Next Tuesday, get ready for a brand new episode! This episode features a very special guest for Sabrina, her first ever personal coach, Chris Atley. She is known for her ability to help business owners reduce the overwhelm, and move through the obstacles keeping them from realizing their business dreams and lifestyle goals. Chris is an award winning coach, TEDx speaker and bestselling author. She has been featured on media outlets such as Bloomberg Radio, Fox, ABC and the Manhattan Neighborhood Network. The number one topic for women right now is self-care. Chris is convinced self-care is almost as important as breathing. And sometimes it is simply breathing. It is hard to separate out what is self-care when we are marketing images of spa days and chocolates. It may be a bit of a buzzword right now, but it is about honouring yourself and doing things that make you feel happy and more at peace and calm. We need to fill up our cup in this way first, so we can give to other people. Appreciating and honouring ourselves so we can provide to our families. It could be daily habits, once a month massage. But finding a ritual in your day will help alleviate the stress that wears us down. Start scheduling self-care as an appointment. You wouldn't skip a doctors appointment- don't skip one for yourself. Make sure to plan it for a time when you are energized and excited. Mornings give ample opportunity for time to yourself, enjoy coffee and set a good foundation for your day. If waiting until the end of the day, it gets pushed off from being tired, rushing through bedtime routines, etc. Sabrina and Chris have faced all of the excuses from not being a morning person, to not being able to wake up that early and more. It could start with walking the dog each morning, or getting out of the house. Self-care needs to work for you. If you really are not a morning person, try it at night. Make this work for your family and your schedule. Work with your support network and trade off time, ask your partner, a friend, whatever resources you can pool. Balancing little kids sleep schedules and a solid self care routine in the mornings don't always align, but the key is to make sure your needs, including sleep are being met. Try nap time, or involving the kids in your meditations or affirmations like Sabrina did. Chris focuses her coaching on building an abundant mindset in her clients. She focuses on what our thoughts and beliefs are deep down so that we can see how we are showing up in life. Chris helps people manifest their biggest dreams and goals by shifting their mindset into a nurturing, flexible growth. As moms we are told we are “just a mom”. Between the full time work of the invisible motherload, on top of the children and losing our identities when we become mothers, we can lose focus on ourselves. Following a path on how thoughts shape our reality and focusing on the study of miracles, Chris has developed a podcast on One Simple Truth, a deep dive into the study of miracles in a nondenominational way. She focuses on how to remove the roadblocks in our way. By breaking down the complex ideas behind these mindset shifts, it makes the practice more approachable and accessible, and you learn how to apply this on the practical level. You can understand it on a higher level, but applying it practically can take more understanding. How to start your mindset journey: Get clear on what we want and believing it's possible. Look to someone else who does believe if you're having trouble believing it. Find a role model and believe its possible. Get clear on what your beliefs are deep down. If you are not where you wanna be, there is a belief somewhere that is affecting how you are showing up. If it has not shifted emotionally or in our subconscious, it will be manifesting in our day to day. Analyze how you feel about success. What do you really believe? Be ready to receive.
Eric Rivera - podcaster, video producer, and host of "Life and Whatever Else" - a talk-based program that covers the latest in pop culture, sports, and entertainment - joins Christopher in the Radio Free Brooklyn studio to discuss his production career; his early television and video production education; “Life and Whatever Else” - his broadcast program on Manhattan Neighborhood Network; steering his guests away from an uninformed interview; his favorite show to produce so far: HIV prevention and awareness; being a lifelong NYC resident; and his first love - wrestling. Most interestingly, Eric discloses on-air, about the rarirty of never having been afflicted by the stomach flu. Here's to hoping we didn't jinx him. Eric also partakes in some Junk and Jam Hour fun - including some commentary in the Not So Fake Really Weird News segment, about the unfortunate food poisoning deaths incurred at a Peruvian funeral and the joy some students find in baking and sharing cookies made of dead grandfather ashes. We also discover exactly which Disney Princess Eric would be, based on his not-so-princessey activities; and that he's not very good at quizzes about anything related to cinema. Enjoy.

The 27-year-old Joshua (18-0, 18 KOs), who holds the IBF heavyweight belt, will face the veteran former champion Klitschko (64-4, 53 KOs), who will be 41 at the time of the fight, at the 90,000-seat Wembley Stadium in London. This fight, which is also for a WBA title, will be shown live in the U.K. on Sky Sports Box Office and in Germany on RTL, with record viewership likely on each. As of now, both Showtime and HBO are vying for the U.S. TV rights. As part of a world tour to promote this fight, both Joshua and Klitschko held this New York press conference January 31, along with Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, and Bernd Boente of KMG Management Group. On today's show we talk to writer and performer Chris Gethard about The Chris Gethard Show. Starting as a stage show at the UCB Theatre in 2009, The Chris Gethard Show was a showcase for Gethard's love of akwardness, sadness and strange stunts. In 2011, Gethard took the show to it's bizarrely logical next step and debuted it on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network public access channel, where it's since gained a national cult following, and is every bit the visual equivalent of Tom Scharpling's The Best Show. A few weeks ago, we met up with Chris in the back hallways of the UCB Chelsea Theatre to discuss his past (See Beginnings ep.63), and on Field Guide, we talk about the show he created! Subscribe on iTunes and come see Beginnings: Live at UCB East on October 9th at 8pm! Fun!™
On today's show, we talk to Chris Gethard. Chris is a writer and prformer based in New York City, who started with the UCB Theatre over a decade ago and currently performs on their house improv team The Stepfathers. UCB is also where he incubated The Chris Gethard Show, a Best Show-like program which can be found weekly on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network. On addition to this, Chris has also penned a book of autobiographical tales entitled A Bad Idea I'm About to Do and was recently adopted by IFC as part of their Adopt-A-Comic program. A few weeks ago, we sat down with Chris in the halls behind the UCB Chelsea Theatre and debated singing to a girlfriend's mother, discussed the lawlessness of West Orange and dwelled on our collective shame.ALSO! Don't forget the next Beginnings: Live at UCB East. It's going to be incredible with Lizz Winstead (co-creator of The Daily Show and Air America Radio), David Rees (Get Your War On, How to Sharpen Pencils), and musical guest A.C. Newman (The New Pornographers)! Sept. 11th at 8pm!
The Chris Gethard Show is just the latest crazy, hilarious, original project from Chris Gethard. Chris has spent the last few years dreaming up some of the coolest comedy projects to come out of New York City. He's used his brilliance to bring Diddy to the UCB, treat a depressed comedy nerd to the time of his life, travel cross country using only Twitter as a map, and is now broadcasting weekly out of Manhattan Neighborhood Network every Wednesday. Learn more about Chris and how his work ethic propels him this week on The Wolf Den.
