You can send me a text if you have a comment or questionA rapidly thrown together expedition to the Batavian Republic in expelled by the French. And yet, there were key successes and innovations that point the way to the future. We'll focus on these as we cover the events of the invasion itself. The new Light Infantry doctrine of the British Army, that John Moore and the Duke of York push through the Army, over all their resistance to change, is part of the package that makes British infantry the best in the world by 1808. Many of the lessons learned, were learned in this campaign. Also, there was the experience of relying on the reverse slope, where in the 2nd battle, the British infantry were able to inflict 2,000 Franco-Batavian casualties at the cost of only 37 dead. Many more lessons learned and the end of the Dutch fleet as a threat were the major results.

The Joint Readiness Training Center is pleased to present the fifty-sixth episode to air on ‘The Crucible - The JRTC Experience.' Hosted by the Commander of Ops Group (COG), COL Matthew Hardman. Today's guest is the Commanding General of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), MG Gregory Anderson. The 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) is the premier light infantry division in the United States Army based at Fort Drum, New York. Formerly designated as a mountain warfare unit, the division was the only one of its size in the US military to receive specialized training for fighting in mountainous conditions. Originally activated as the 10th Light Division (Alpine) in 1943, the division was redesignated the 10th Mountain Division in 1944 and fought in the mountains of Italy in some of the roughest terrain in World War II. The 10th Mountain is one of the most deployed divisions during the Global War on Terror with numerous deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as well as Syria. Their motto is “Climb to Glory” (the proper response is “To the Top”) and have the Hollywood call-sign of “Mountain.” In this episode we continue to discuss the employment of light infantry divisions, brigade combat teams, and maneuver battalions during large scale combat operations across multiple domains. We highlight some of the heavy-light imperatives: The speed, ranges, and complexity of the battlefield are markedly greater in armored-mechanized formations and requires infinitely more logistics to sustain the fight (Integrated logistics into your maneuver plan). Light forces have greater mobility with the ability to rapidly deploy combined with flexibility in diverse complex-terrain, particularly in restrictive terrain, while maintaining a smaller logistical footprint. Requires effective synchronization, timing, and detailed controlled measures with the emphasis on fighting at distance. Armor-mech. Teams requires utmost dedication to maintaining their equipment, although all formations incorporate it into priorities of work. Leaders must learn to anticipate logistics instead of simply reacting to each situation in order to enable future operations. Most effective when employed together combined arms operations with supporting joint fires and integrated engineers & other enablers. Use of heavy forces to create breakthroughs and exploit enemy weaknesses while light forces conduct rapid maneuvers, seize key terrain, and disrupt enemy rear areas. Additionally, we discuss some of the task organization changes that the Army is undertaking as part of their 2030 concept. Specifically, the suggested transformation that will occur to light infantry formations and the impact to their mission. The main attribute of light infantry formations is to be able to traverse with ease where armor-mech. Forces are unable to traverse. Part of S01 “The Leader's Laboratory” series. This month we welcome old friend of the museum, Mr Bill Jackson to the podcast. Born in Hereford, and founder and chairman of Jackson Property, Bill cut his military teeth with the Lucton School Combined Cadet Force and shares he reminiscences of troop trains to summer camps, bulling boots and progress to the dizzying height of Colour Sergeant. Poached by Colonel Tom Hill, Bill then became an officer cadet with the Herefordshire Light Infantry, responsible for a platoon across Leominster, Kington and Tenbury Wells. We hear of of his experiences in getting to know his men - many of whom had seen national service in Kenya - mess dinners, regimental balls and being allocated his own transport in the form of a Champ!Bill was given the honour to carry one of the Regimental Colours in the disbandment parade at Hereford Cathedral in 1967 and he relates his experiences of that momentous and poignant day. However this was not Bill's end of his connection with volunteer units in the county - being a driving force in the Army Cadet league, Chair of the Trustees of the Museum and being "on parade" again as High Sherriff with his old platoon sergeant, Mick Meredith who was Sergeant-at-Arms for Leominster Town Council. We really enjoyed chatting to Bill and hope you enjoy listening to our conversation. The chat continued after we'd officially finished, and we hope to bring you this extra material as a bonus episode soon.Visit our website - Herefordshire Light Infantry Museum; follow us on Facebook Herefordshire Regimental Museum | Facebook or visit our Youtube channel Herefordshire Regimental Museum - YouTube.Support the Museum? Fireforce is the compelling, brutal but true account of Chris Cocks' service in 3 Commando, The Rhodesian Light Infantry, during Zimbabwe's bitter civil war of the '70s—a war that came to be known almost innocuously as ‘the bush war'. ‘Fireforce', a tactic of total airborne envelopment, was developed and perfected by the RLI, together with the Selous Scouts and the Rhodesian Air Force. Fireforce became the principal strike weapon of the beleaguered Rhodesian forces in their struggle against the overwhelming tide of the Communist-trained and -equipped ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas. The combat strain on a fighting soldier was almost unbelievable, for the Rhodesians, who were always desperately short of ground troops, were sometimes obliged to parachute the same men into action into as many as three enemy contacts a day. While estimates of enemy casualties vary, there seems little doubt that the RLI accounted for at least 12,000 ZANLA and ZIPRA guerrillas—but not without cost.Fireforce is not for the squeamish. Although it has been written with unforgettable pathos and humor, it tells of face-to-face combat in the bush and death at point-blank range. It is a book which does nothing to glorify or glamorize war, for as Chris Cocks found at such a young age, war is merely a catalogue of suffering, destruction and death.Fireforce has been described by critics as being to the Rhodesian War what All Quiet On The Western Front was to World War I and Dispatches was to Vietnam. Read it … it will an experience you never forget.Get Chris' books here:https://www.amazon.com/Chris-Cocks/e/B0034P707O/ref=aufs_dp_fta_dskFor all bonus content including:-2 bonus episodes per month -Access to ALL bonus segments with our guests-Ad Free audio feedSubscribe to our Patreon!

Today we hear the Combat Story of long-time Special Forces veteran, Ranger, and sniper Darrell Utt, who spent 26 years in the service, most of that in special operations across 10 deployments. Call to Action: For former military, government and law enforcement, if you're looking for a high paying and meaningful job, check out our Trust & Safety Institute at www.trustsafetyinstitute.com. Darrell tracked down PIFWICs (Persons Indicted for War Crimes) in Kosovo, was part of one of the craziest infils into Iraq you'll ever hear, used a honeypot to lure out an HVT, developed a devastatingly effective HUMINT network, and led countless kill/capture operations, taking down dozens of HVTs and detaining hundreds of extremists and their leaders. What's great about Darrell is that he always put himself in harm's way ahead of troops, which is not always the case. His ODA unit earned the coveted Larry Thorne award which goes to the best Special Forces unit for the work they did during one deployment to Iraq. Darrell himself earned the MG Robert T. Frederick “Top Operator” Award, which goes to the top Special Forces NCO. Since leaving the service, Darrell has taken on a role helping to build the future of the National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation, which is on a mission to deliver “education, leadership, and inspiring spaces for learning and reflection, to preserve, share, and harness the stories, lives, and impact of Medal of Honor recipients.” I couldn't imagine anyone better to represent the stories and lives of our Medal of Honor brethren than Darrell. We begin with a look at the war in Ukraine, through the eyes of a Calgary man who's traveled to the region to fight the Russian attack, alongside the Ukrainian people. We speak with Paul Hughes, who has made his way to the city of Lviv. Next, we head stateside for our weekly conversation with Jackson Proskow, Washington Bureau Chief for Global News. Jackson ‘breaks down' a busy week in the US, with President Joe Biden's ‘State of the Union' address and the latest on the American stance on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Then, we speak with Mayor Jyoti Gondek for a City Hall update. This week we discuss the ‘proposed' changes to the “Municipal Act” being looked at by the Province. We ask the Mayor what this would mean for Calgary and why it has many on Council concerned. Finally, ‘Green Thumbs Unite!' We speak with Tim Goodwin, Associate Editor of the “Old Farmer's Almanac Garden Guide” for some inspiration for those eager to ‘get growing'. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Undergraduate History student Buket describes how a small personal pin worn on a man's lapel over a hundred years ago leads us to a century-long legacy of violence and political control. The Wilmington Light Infantry played a central role in the coup and massacre of 1898. The men who wore such a badge have last names that still resonate powerfully in Wilmington today.

The PPCLI was the last privately organized regiment in Canadian history, and throughout the First World War it would have two Victoria Cross winners and 19 Battle Honours. It all started because one man named Capt. Gault was inspired by Lord Strathcona to create his own regiment. That regiment would become the first Canadian infantry to reach France.
