The Spatial Web is Coming, Part 2 #futureofai #artificialintelligence by Denise Holt At the forefront of this transition to the Spatial Web is the convergence of new Smart Technology stacks merging AR, VR, AI, IOT, and Distributed Ledger innovation, working together as part of a universal network of interconnected people, places & things, both real & virtual. Think of the Spatial Web as a blending of virtual and physical worlds using cognitive and distributed technologies. Undeniably, there are specific Smart Technologies that will be crucial to the architecture of this networked Web 3.0 experience. So, what are Smart Technologies? Smart Technologies integrate Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, and Distributed Ledger Technologies into these key verticals: Smart Spaces Smart Cities, Smart Factories, Smart Buildings, Smart Homes Trillions of IOT sensors are expected to come online in the next decade, providing opportunities for new technologies to create programmable spaces in defined locations, both real and virtual, blending real world and digital interaction for the complete Metaverse experience. Smart Assets NFTs, Property, Avatars, Art, Merchandise A Smart Asset is any physical or digital object that is registered on a Distributed Ledger securing proof of its unique existence, ownership & location. Programmable conditions in the form of Smart Contracts can automatically determine & execute the transfer, sale, trade and use across locations, users, games, apps and real/virtual worlds. Smart Contracts Programmable, automated, self-executing & immutable code recorded onto Distributed Ledger Blockchains, securing transactions & agreements by replacing static documents and the need for third party mediation. Smart Accounts A single user account that can be used across any Web 3.0 application that manages, stores & authenticates a User's Decentralized Identity, Asset Inventory, Wallets, and User Transaction, Payment & Location History. Provides private & secure transactions and interactions across Spaces and between Users. Smart IDs Proof of Identity is the first step of security in any transaction. Utilizing decentralized identifiers, every user, space or asset can be uniquely identified as authentic. Smart IDs prevent fraud as they provide for proof of origin, proof of identity, proof of ownership, and data sovereignty by enabling users to define and control access to the complete contents of their digital profile at any time. According to Dan Mapes of VERSES, “Smart ID on the Spatial Web includes SSI — Self Sovereign Identity — which means You Own Your Own Data — and can choose to sell it yourself if you want to. This also enables Zero Knowledge Proofs — which gives the user total control over what they choose to share and with whom and for how long. You might choose to share part of your medical record with a doctor but that record disappears after 10 days or 30 days — whatever you decided.” Smart Payments Programmable transactions using digital wallets and crypto currencies, to authenticate, automate and execute payments for any exchange of value between Users and Assets in any real or virtual Space. These Smart Technologies along with humans, machines, content, data, assets, locations, buildings, factories, workflows, imagination, and the context of real-time interaction across every one of them, THIS is the Web 3.0 of the future. Special thanks to Dan Mapes , President and Co-Founder, VERSES Technologies, and Director of The Spatial Web Foundation. ++ This is Part 2 of a four part series titled, “The Spatial Web is Coming… Is Web 3.0 Ready?” Listen to Part 3 to find out how Smart Technologies translate into the Spatial Web. Previous Communities Summit events have seen the launch of various new tools and updates, so it could well be worth tuning in if you're looking to stay up with the latest group moderation options that could help to maximize your Facebook community. You can learn more about 2022 Facebook's Communities Summit, and sign-up to attend, here.3. Meta Shutting Down ‘Bulletin' Newsletter Platform - Meta launched Bulletin in April 2021, as part of an effort to take a piece of the growing newsletter market and compete with Substack (btw, Twimshow is hosted on substack). Now Meta says that it will shut down Bulletin by early next year. Per Meta, “Bulletin has allowed us to learn about the relationship between Creators and their audiences and how to better support them in building their community on Facebook. While this off-platform product itself is ending, we remain committed to supporting these and other Creators' success and growth on our platform.”4. Meta Rolls Out ‘Advantage Custom Audience' - Per Meta, “... rolling out Advantage custom audience, a new targeting automation product that leverages an advertiser's Custom Audience to reach new and existing customers. This is similar to Lookalike audiences that find people who are likely to be interested in your business, except that Advantage custom audience goes beyond the 1%, 5% or 10% similarity ranges you are used to, while also prioritizing delivery of ads to people in your Custom Audience. This entire process is guided by AI and machine learning to help improve advertiser campaign performance with less manual effort.”5. Instagram : Multi-advertiser, Explore And Profile Feed Ads - Multi-advertiser ads allow businesses to be discovered by people who are in a shopping mindset and have recently engaged with relevant business content in feed. When a person expresses commercial intent by engaging with an ad, Instagram will deliver more ads from other businesses that may be of interest, powered by machine learning. Through a large-scale back end study, they observed that adding multi-advertiser ads to ad campaigns drove improved efficiency in incremental conversions per dollar spent.Explore home, the grid that people see when they first arrive on the Explore tab, will now feature ads to reach people in the earliest stages of discovering new content they care about.Instagram is also testing  ads in profile feed for non-teen, public profiles, which is the feed experience that people can scroll through after visiting another account's profile and tapping on a post. Ads in profile feed give advertisers the opportunity to expand their reach easily using existing feed assets, while giving people the same personalized ad experience they enjoy in their main Instagram feed. As a part of this test, we will experiment with a monetization opportunity that will allow eligible creators to earn extra income from ads displayed in their profile feeds, beginning with select U.S. creators.6. Google Analytics Stops Reporting Store Visits - Store Visits in Google Analytics provides an estimated count of the number of store visits from users who visit your website and then visit your physical store within 30 days. Store visits are estimates based on data from users who have turned on Location History. Only aggregated and anonymized data is reported to advertisers, and they aren't able to see any store visits from individual website sessions, ad clicks, viewable impressions, or people. Now Google states that, “on 10/31/2022, Store Visits reporting will be discontinued. As of this date, new Store Visits reporting will not be generated. Historical Store Visits reporting will remain available.”7. Google Announces ‘Tag Coverage Summary' - Sitewide tags are the building blocks of a strong measurement foundation. They help advertisers understand how customers are interacting with their website and ads. But, it's historically been difficult to set up and manage tags without technical expertise or a tag management platform like Google Tag Manager. To address this, Google rolled out a single, reusable Google tag so you can do more across different Google products and accounts without changing your website code. We covered this in more detail in Episode#120.Now, with the new Tag coverage summary, you can quickly determine whether your Google tag has been implemented on all of your website pages. You can access this summary from the Google tag sections of both Google Ads and Google Analytics, and through Google Tag Manager.8. Google Ads: Target Users Who Are More Likely To Click On In-App Ads - Through this update, Google Ads' app campaigns allow you to target people with an affinity for clicking on ads within apps. The new targeting option is target return on ad spend for ad revenue or tROAS for ad revenue for short. Per Google, “this is an update to the Target Return on Ad Spend, or tROAS bid strategy, which is recommended if you are seeking a specific Return on Ad Spend from your App campaigns..”To use tROAS for ad revenue, your develope will need to send all AdMob or third-party ad revenue data to Google Analytics for bidding. Because third-party ad revenue in Google Analytics enables revenue import from any monetization platform into Google Analytics for tROAS bidding. In addition, you're required to link your Google Analytics property to Google Ads and send your Google Analytics ad_impression event to Google Ads. With those requirements met, you can implement this new targeting capability by setting up a tROAS for ad revenue App campaign and selecting the ‘ad_impression' event to optimize toward ad revenue. 9. Google Ads Testing ‘Automatically Created Assets' - Automatically created assets are a campaign-level setting that helps you generate additional assets (headers and descriptions) to complement the assets you input for your ads by using relevant creative content from your landing page, website, existing ads, and keywords in your ad group. Note that automatically created assets setting is currently in beta and not available for all. Automatically created assets will appear in campaign level settings as accounts are added to the beta. You can see which assets are being used in the RSAs by navigating to “Asset report” from the Ad level to “View asset details” and viewing all of the assets used.  You can use the “source” column to distinguish between automatically created assets vs advertiser-created assets  Automatically created assets will show impressions and performance ratings  On the channel-level asset report, auto-created assets are visible like advertiser-provided assets If you have access to this new feature, you'll instruct Google to generate the assets from eligible sources based on relevance and predicted performance. You can choose to opt-out of automatically generated assets by going into your Google Ads account, navigating to Settings, then clicking Automatically created assets, then selecting Off: Use only assets I provide directly for my ads.Source: https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/11259373 10. Google Ad Recommendations Can Now Be Applied As Experiments - Google Ads announced that you can now apply a recommendation as an experiment in the Experiments page. This allows you to more efficiently "in as few as two clicks, you can set up an experiment where you compare your base campaign to a trial campaign which will have the recommendation applied," Google said. Currently, this functionality is available for broad match and target return on advertising spend recommendations. Google said it will continue to roll out support for more recommendation types on the Experiments page in the coming months.Google said this was done because many advertisers felt that it can be hard to understand the impact of applying a recommendation to your account.Google recommends you monitor your results within the Google Ads Experiments page for 4-6 weeks. Once the experiment has concluded, you can apply the results by either converting your trial campaign into a new campaign or by transferring the learnings to your original campaign.

Google will delete location data of users who have visited personally sensitive places, including abortion clinics, the internet search giant said in a blogpost on Friday, a week after the US Supreme Court struck down a landmark 1973 judgement — now widely known as Roe V. Wade — that had ensured a woman's right to an abortion in America. The reversal has polarised opinion world over. “Some of the places people visit — including medical facilities like counselling centres, domestic violence shelters, abortion clinics, fertility centres, addiction treatment facilities, weight loss clinics, cosmetic surgery clinics, and others — can be particularly personal,” Jen Fitzpatrick, a Google senior vice president wrote in a blogpost on the company's website. “Today, we're announcing that if our systems identify that someone has visited one of these places, we will delete these entries from Location History soon after they visit. This change will take effect in the coming weeks,” Fitzpatrick added. Apple's next wristwatch may be equipped with a sensor that can tell if the wearer has a fever, and this feature is a go for the upcoming model, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports. The feature will be part of both the standard Apple Watch, the next of which is the series 8, and also a rugged edition aimed at extreme sports athletes, Gurman writes. It will, however, be absent in the next edition of the iPhone SE model that is also expected this year, he adds. Private equity and venture capital investments in India during the quarter ended June 2022, were lower by more than 25 percent, at $11.3 billion, Venture Intelligence said in a blogpost yesterday. The investments in Q2, across 315 deals, compared with $15.2 billion invested in 264 deals in the same period in 2021. The investments were also down almost 30 percent compared with the first three months of 2022 — which saw $16 billion invested in 390 deals — and marked three continuous quarters of decline, according to Venture Intelligence, a research service focused on private company financials, transactions, and valuations. The latest quarter saw four new unicorns — Leadsquared, Purplle, PhysicsWallah and Open Financial Technologies — compared with 11 in Q1 of 2021 and 14 in Q1 of 2022. Overall, unicorn startups in India, attracted close to $8.5 billion in investments in the first half of 2022, down 16 percent versus the same period last year, which saw $10.1 billion being invested in unicorns, according to Venture Intelligence. Analyses of the relation between people's mobility and SARS-CoV-2 spread revealed three groups of countries

A new study analysing the link between people's reduced movement and the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in 2020 shows that in some countries, the virus spread more rapidly when people stayed at home. In addition, restricting people's mobility to some extent appeared, retrospectively, to be better at minimising the spread of SARS-CoV-2 than extreme mobility restrictions, in many countries. “Over two years mark the start of the pandemic which changed the lives of many of us in various ways. The current development of the SARS-CoV-2 spread suggests that this chapter of history entitled COVID-19 might, hopefully, be fading to its end. There is, however, still a lot to learn about it. Reflecting on how we have reacted to the pandemic could help us draw useful lessons on how to minimize the damage of similar challenges, especially now that infectious diseases appear to be a re-emerging threat,” researchers Mounir Ould Setti and Sylvain Tollis point out. Government-imposed lockdowns and movement restrictions were likely the hallmarks of the response to this pandemic. These interventions were found invasive in some circumstances and settings. Were lockdowns and movement restrictions efficient in reducing SARS-CoV-2 spread? The researchers from the University of Eastern Finland analysed how the movement of people aligned with daily changes of the effective replication number of SARS-CoV-2. The effective replication number reflects the rate of spread of the disease as it captures dynamic changes in person-to-person viral transmission. The mobility indicators are based on anonymised position data from users of Google services who have Location History activated on their mobile phones. The positions are classified into different mobility categories, including, for example, residential mobility, which indicates that people are staying at home. The researchers focused on the pre-vaccination and pre-variants-of-concern phase of the pandemic from February 15 to December 31, 2020, analysing daily changes in mobility and SARS-CoV-2 spread in 125 countries and 52 United States regions or states. The analysis identified three groups of countries based on patterns of correlations between the mobility indicators and the effective reproduction number of SARS-CoV-2. Group 1 consisted of countries with “normal” correlations, in other words, negative correlations between residential mobility and SARS-CoV-2 spread, e.g. the United States, Turkey, and most OECD countries. Group 2 included countries with “inverted” correlations, referring to positive correlations between residential mobility and SARS-CoV-2 spread. Group 3 consisted of countries with more complex correlation patterns or “inconclusive” correlations. In group 1 countries such as Austria, the more time people spent at home, the less disease spread was recorded, while in group 2 countries such as Bolivia, the exact opposite was observed: the more time people spent at home, the more disease was spreading. In addition, in many countries, the patterns of correlation between mobility and disease spread displayed a minimum of disease spread at an intermediate level of mobility restriction (“U-shaped” correlations), indicating an optimal level above which restricting people's mobility could lead to more disease spread. In other words, complete lockdowns might have been counterproductive at certain levels and in some countries. The authors concluded that a systematic analysis of correlations between mobility and disease spread at a regional level could help understand the optimal level of mobility restriction that minimizes the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in that specific region.

The ACCC won a major court battle over Google and its location data tracking in the federal court on Friday, with Google found to have "partially" misled Australian consumers. The case by the ACCC argued Google was in breach of Australian consumer law when it continued tracking location data after users had switched off Location History on their Android phones while another Web Activity setting remained on. Justice Thomas Thawley's decision found that some users would have been misled to believe such data would stop being collected with this setting switched off while others would not have, and found Google in breach of sections 18, 29.1.g and 34 of Australian consumer law. In other Google battles, last week we mentioned Brave browser opting out of Google's new FLoC advertising technology due to privacy concerns and it seems many others are also declaring they will block the trackers from their browsers. Mozilla's Firefox, Microsoft's Edge, and Vivaldi in the browser space and search engine DuckDuckGo has also released a browser extension to block it for you. So it seems Google and its Chrome browser will be on their own with FLoC.Back in Australia, the federal government on Friday announced it has selected 81 regional locations that will receive funding to improve wireless connectivity. A combination of federal, state and local funds will see $180M spent on improved infrastructure to suit the needs of the location, whether mobile coverage improvements or fixed wireless installations. Few details were offered at the announcement, with the government set to play the announcables game to be able to mention the funding as often as possible over coming weeks and months. In an environmental progress report on Friday, Apple released details of its efforts to achieve a number of its own sustainability goals, from energy programs to changes in its manufacturing processes. The decision to leave out a charger came under fire and legal action in some parts of the world. In tech pioneers, a fond farewell to Chuck Geschke who passed away at the age of 82 over the weekend. Google can still track users even when their location history is disabled, according to an investigation. New York-based nonprofit news agency Associated Press (AP), with the help of Princeton University, investigated Google's privacy setting services in Android and Apple devices. AP showed the capacity of Google's location markers through a visual map that divulged the places visited by Gunes Acar [GOO-nesh uh-kahr], a Princeton researcher. Although Acar's Google Location History was disabled, the visual map still displayed the researcher's home address and even the commute around New York City. Findings further revealed that Google keeps snapshots of a user's location upon activation of the Google Maps app. Moreover, automatic weather updates and even browser searches can detect a user's current location. The researchers also found that for Google to fully stop tracking one's location, users should turn off the Web & App Activity setting, which is turned on by default. When enabled, this setting records and stores data from Google apps and websites. Google reacted to the investigation by saying that the company provides clear instructions on how to properly turn off tools like the Location History and the Web & App Activity. This privacy-related issue is not a first for the tech giant. In May, Google received complaints for violating the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The GDPR is a law that protects the personal data and privacy of users from the European Union. Google, along with other tech companies like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, was accused of coercing users to agree on data collection for the purpose of advertising before they can use the company's services.

(Justin Sullivan/Getty Images) A recent investigation shows that your movements are still being tracked and recorded even when you turn your smartphone "tracking" function off. Marc spoke with Graeme Hirst (PhD) professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Computer science. He says Google doesn't necessarily have any bad intention in tracking your movements, but it is another nibble at our personal privacy and adds to creating detailed online profiles of you. Pirates in the age of sail, and one of the most successful of them all, Black Bart A new book tells of the rise and fall of one of history's most successful pirates in the age of sail,, Bartholomew Roberts "King of the Atlantic Pirates" (Dundurn Press) Probably what you think you know about pirates comes mostly from TV and film..and it would be almost all wrong. A new book "Black Flag of the North: Bartholomew Roberts- King of the Atlantic Pirates" has been written by historian Victor Suthren. It sets the record straight while also talking about the rise and fall of Bartho Roberts, who first rose to prominence in Canadian waters, which had been a popular place for piracy. Suthren begins by explaining why it was so easy for pirates to convert other mariners to their side. From playtime, to Olympic sport Skipping rope skills head for the big time..the Olympics. (Rope Skipping Canada) Almost everyone, boys and girls, have engaged in skipping rope at one time. It's also a pastime that is surely practised in every country in the world. But it has graduated from a children's game, to professional-level and international competitions, and now it's headed for the Olympics. Terry speaks with Erin Gillespie is a former figure skater living in Edmonton who now serves as chair of Rope Skipping Canada.

If, like most people, you thought Google stopped tracking your location once you turned off Location History in your account settings, you were wrong. According to an AP investigation published Monday, even if you disable Location History, the search giant still tracks you every time you open Google Maps, get certain automatic weather updates, or search for things in your browser. There's a way to stop it—but it takes some digging.
