Deb Brown, Chief Mission Officer for the American Lung Association, gave us an update on the annual State of the Air Report and our Delaware Valley air quality it isn't good when it comes to Ozone smog and particle pollution. We discussed the mission of the Lung Association, education, advocacy and research, which includes the annual report card. She spoke on the health ramifications ozone and particle pollution, they can cause premature death and other serious health effects such as asthma attacks, heart attacks, strokes, preterm births and impaired cognitive functioning later in life. Particle pollution can also cause lung cancer. She notes that communities of color are disproportionately exposed to unhealthy air and are also more likely to be living with one or more chronic conditions that make them more vulnerable to air pollution, including asthma, diabetes and heart disease. The report found that a person of color in the U.S. is more than twice as likely as a white individual to live in a community with a failing grade on all three pollution measures. Deb discussed their current research project on lung health, following a cohort or 25 to 35 year-olds to observe their lung health over the years. Now in the second year, they are looking for volunteers to participate. She reminded us of Saved by the Scan, lung screenings for former smokers with a 20-year history of smoking or a 2-park a day habit for 15 years, lung cancer is the number one killer for men and women and survival rates improve with early detection. We discussed their educational programming, including smoking cessation offerings and youth initiatives. We also discussed their advocacy work, advancing anti-tobacco laws and air pollution rules that will help clean up particle pollution and address climate change and promoting zero-emission technologies, like electric cars and trucks. Finally, a call to volunteer or fundraise, either a DIY activity or through their annual Fight 4 Air Climbs or other events. For more information about the State of the Air reports, Saved by the Scan, their anti-smoking campaigns, volunteering or fundraising go to LUNG.org.
As temperatures rise and weather patterns become more unpredictable, the effects of climate change on respiratory health become even more noticeable. Dr. Stephanie Lovinsky-Desir, an expert in respiratory health, joins Dr. G and Kortney to discuss how climate change exacerbates respiratory conditions like asthma, particularly affecting vulnerable populations. The episode explores why we should consider the connection between climate change and asthma. Understanding the mechanisms behind it is crucial. Dr. Lovinsky-Desir explains how increased temperatures lead to higher levels of air pollution and create “heat islands" in urban areas. Heat islands are urban areas that are significantly warmer than their surrounding rural areas due to human activities. These islands intensify health risks by trapping heat and pollutants, worsening air quality and increasing respiratory distress. Dr. Lovinsky-Desir and Dr. G share practical measures that are easy to implement and can significantly help us navigate poor air quality. These include wearing masks during high pollution and monitoring air quality through initiatives like the State of the Air Report or your weather app. She also highlights the role of organizations like the American Lung Association in providing resources and support for improving indoor air quality. We hope this episode helps you better understand climate change's impact on air quality, the overall environment, and lung health. Hopefully, you can take meaningful steps towards a healthier future for all. If you are in doubt about the impacts of climate change, this episode is for you! Tiffany's one of my favorite people to interview, and I was delighted to catch up with her after her recent show at Austin's Fuel Room in Libertyville. We talked a lot about her approach to club shows, which I told her makes me uncomfortable. We also talk about her run as the Eiffel Tower in the UK version of the Masked Singer, her current music trajectory, her food entrepreneurship … and entrepreneurship in general. This is a fun interview that absolutely flew by as I recorded it. I trust you'll have the same experience watching/listening. About 25% of Virginia homes have high levels of radon, according to the American Lung Association's annual "State of Lung Cancer" report, and the organization is encouraging state residents to have their homes tested for the odorless, tasteless, radioactive gas. Radon occurs naturally in the soil and can enter homes through cracks in floors, basement walls, foundations, and other openings. While inhaling radon can cause lung cancer, short-term exposure does not cause lung cancer. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, radon causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year and is the leading cause of lung cancer in people who have...Article LinkSupport the show

Dr. Albert Rizzo, Chief Medical Officer, American Lung Association, and Deb Brown, Chief Mission Officer, American Lung Association, discussed the ALA's annual report on lung cancer. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in America, but both expressed hope thanks to their aggressive anti-smoking advocacy and scans for people at high risk. Screening is used to detect lung cancer early, if caught before it spreads, the likelihood of surviving 5 years or more improves to 60 percent. We discussed the causes, while smoking is accountable for many cases, second hand smoke, particle pollution and radon can also cause it. For former smokers, however, a screening program can help discover cancer while still in its earliest stages. We also discussed the outcome disparities for men – and women – of colour, in scanning and treatment. For more information call 1-800-LUNGUSA (1-800-586-4872) or visit Lung.org. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, June 22. It will be a little bit cooler on Wednesday, but the real cooldown will have to wait until the weekend. According to the National Weather Service it will be mostly sunny in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 88 degrees. On Wednesday night it will be mostly clear, with a low of around 63 degrees. The city of Cedar Rapids is hoping for a $50 million boost to its construction of a $750 million permanent flood control system — if proposed federal legislation is signed into law. Several steps and likely multiple years remain before any funding comes to fruition, but draft language in the 2022 https://www.epw.senate.gov/public/_cache/files/e/1/e1a5557f-de89-442f-9571-26396db7c476/46ECE692C73686EE7C22437E0D735361.wrda-2022-4292022.pdf (Water Resources Development Act )would unlock the funds for flood protection on the east side of the Cedar River — which would allow the city to accelerate work on other segments of the system. The Water Resources Development Act is renewed every several years and includes projects such as the city's flood control system. It's the first step in the appropriations process for any Army Corps of Engineers project Although Congress authorized construction of the city's east-side flood control system in 2014, it wasn't until 2018 — 10 years after the big flood — that federal lawmakers actually allocated the money. So the city may have to wait a bit until they see whether this money can be shifted in another direction. Four months after https://www.thegazette.com/higher-education/iowa-board-of-regents-member-milt-dakovich-dies/ (Milt Dakovich, a longtime member of the Iowa Board of Regents, died) of cancer, Gov. Kim Reynolds on Tuesday named Seneca Companies President and COO James “JC” Risewick to fill the regent vacancy. Risewick will begin serving immediately on the nine-member board that governs Iowa's three public universities and two special schools, though his appointment must be confirmed by the Iowa Senate when it is next in session. The regents' next meeting is July 27, when they'll consider raising tuition rates for the fall. If confirmed, Risewick will serve out the remainder of Dakovich's six-year term — set to expire in April 2025. Risewick serves as president and chief operating officer of Seneca Companies in Des Moines, which touts itself as “an established leader in the petroleum industry.” A University of Iowa Health Care researcher is among 21 nationally to receive an American Lung Association award worth hundreds of thousands for “COVID-19 and respiratory virus research” – his looking specifically at “long-haul” COVID. https://medicine.uiowa.edu/radiology/profile/sean-fain (Sean Fain), a radiology professor in the UI Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Imaging, received the Lung Association's award – which includes up to $100,000 annually for up to two years – for his project titled, https://www.lung.org/research/about-our-research/meet-the-researchers/sean-fain (“Understanding ‘Long Haul' COVID-19.”) The research – https://clinicaltrials.uihealthcare.org/search/studies?studies%5Bquery%5D=COVID (among at least 10 ongoing) UI-based COVID-related clinical studies and trials – aims to investigate blood vessel injury in COVID patients and methods for improving lung-inflammation treatments. In severe cases, according to Fain's project pitch, COVID triggers an immune response when it enters a body, causing inflammation and injury to blood vessels. Blood vessel injuries in the lungs can create scarring known as “interstitial lung disease,” a condition that remains even after any COVID infection resolves.

Feeding off of our last episode around tobacco products and associated health risk factors, this episode we introduce to you Anthony Billoni, Program Director of Tobacco Free WNY and Jenna Brinkworth, lead of WNY Anti-Vaping Coalition to discuss advocacy, policy and tobacco industry related issues around tobacco control. We have already discussed the importance of quitting cigarettes and e-cigarettes, however we do know that not everybody smokes - and some of our listeners may be wondering why it's so important to continue research and advocacy in this area. Trends in tobacco products effect our entire community at a population level, by targeting certain demographics and opening that door to addiction, damaging our air and our earth, and reaching us or our children on a secondhand or thirdhand level sometimes in our homes or even schools. Over the last several decades, organizations in communities across the nation have worked hard to reverse the prevalence of tobacco and nicotine, increase cessation and prevent the onset of smoking in youth and adults. Listen along today as we focus on New York state tobacco regulation over the years and look to the future, including ways to advocate for tighter tobacco control such as smoke-free air law and tobacco sales, why tobacco control is necessary, the rise of e-cigarettes, what parents should know about smoking and teens, tobacco industry advertising and targeting youth and much more! The American Lung Association is committed to ending the death and disease caused by tobacco use. We encourage everyone to view our State of Tobacco Control state highlights for NY state to learn more about cessation funding & services, smoke-free air laws, taxes and flavored tobacco products in our area. To learn more about Lung Association work in tobacco control, check out our tobacco initiatives. Help us End the Youth Vaping Epidemic by educating ourselves on e-cigarettes, spreading awareness of these harmful products, and becoming involved in our Vape Free Schools Initiatives. You can also learn more about the dangers of e-cigarettes and how to spot vaping in your children to ensure healthy lives for all. We discussed recent age restriction on buying cigarettes, raising the age of purchase to 21 and up, and their current push to stop sales of flavored vaping products. Finally, she discussed their concerns about flavored vaping and the future effects of e-cigarettes, hookahs and other smokeless tobacco delivery systems. She was concerned about the marketing of these products to young people, most of whom don't realize their high tobacco content. Whether it's raising money for lung cancer research, keeping kids off tobacco or fighting for laws that protect the air we breathe, there's one organization in Georgia that is dedicated to saving lives. On today's Around Atlanta episode, Executive Director of The American Lung Association Melissa Bauer shares the many programs offered to those suffering from lung disease. Bauer has a background in corporate finance and eight years ago she took a leap of faith and joined the nonprofit industry. “I wanted to do something more and give back,” Bauer said. “I enjoy seeing the seeds we plant and watching them grow.” The American Lung Association is the leading organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education and advocacy. Their work is focused on four strategic imperatives: to defeat lung cancer; to improve the air we breathe; to reduce the burden of lung disease on individuals and their families, and to eliminate tobacco use and tobacco-related diseases. “This organization was originally founded in 1904 and the mission was to eradicate TB,” Bauer said. “Once TB was no longer a social issue, the organization focused more on lung and air quality.” While there are many happy statistics to share, such as smoking cessation being at an all-time low, there are still many issues that need to be addressed. Kids are still developing asthma, lung cancer in women has actually increased over the last 30 years and despite the improvements in Atlanta, air quality is still struggling. Special events, like the recent Power of Breath, Women's Fashion Luncheon is one of the many ways The American Lung Association in Georgia provides necessary resources and funds to people battling and living with lung diseases. Power of Breath is an event solely focused on Women Leadership and Empowerment. Why women? Most people don't know that lung cancer is the No. 1 cancer killer of women. The rate of women dying from the disease has increased 79 percent in the last 40 years, and since the mid-1970s, lung cancer diagnoses among women have been on the rise. Even more shocking, thirty percent of the women diagnosed with lunch cancer have never smoked. “By educating women, we expand our impact and increase the likelihood that women will not only make healthy decisions for themselves, but also for their families,” Bauer said. A unique event taking place at 8 a.m. April 27 at Promenade Atlanta is the annual Fight For Air Climb event. “This is my favorite event where individuals partake in a unique vertical run challenge,” explains Bauer. “There are 38 flights of stairs, 845 steps. It's a competitors and completers event where everyone can achieve their own sense of personal accomplishment.” Bauer also explains how even the fittest runners are humbled by the experience. “By flight 25, you realize that you're struggling to breathe and this gives you an idea of what some people are dealing with every day of their life.” Over 1,295,850 people suffer from a lung disease in Georgia, and while the Lung Association's job is never done, they are working every day to give people options for better lung health and much more.
