"The way that people talk about immigrants in the news media affects those internalized stereotypes and, also, real fears that construct or limit somebody's mobility." In this episode, Dr. Mario Alberto Viveros Espinoza-Kulick and Dr. Alex Espinoza-Kulick explore how the news media impacts the content and context of health access and decision-making among Latinx immigrant and Indigenous communities. They remind us that we need more immigration policies that center the health, well being, and dignity of migrant communities. Their research emphasizes the interconnectedness of immigration policy and public health, urging policymakers to evaluate immigration laws based on their impact on the health of communities, especially immigrant and Indigenous peoples. This episode references the article titled "Immigration Policy is Health Policy: News Media Effects on Health Disparities for Latinx Immigrant and Indigenous Groups" by Mario Alberto V. How Social Media Hostility Impacts DemocracyTogether with our guest, Ariel Hasell, a leading expert in media, communication, and political psychology, we unpack how the outrage fueled by hostile political posts spreads across social media platforms, driving polarization and shaping public discourse based on findings of the research paper "When Social Media Attack: How Exposure to Political Attacks on Social Media Promotes Anger and Political Cynicism." We discuss the role of engagement algorithms in amplifying political bias, the emotional toll of online hostility, and how anger and cynicism influence voter behavior and perceptions of democracy. From the distortion of news to the mental health challenges tied to social media use, this conversation sheds light on how the digital age is transforming our understanding of political differences, often escalating conflicts rather than bridging divides.Join us as we explore strategies to counteract the divisive effects of media outrage and promote healthier, more productive engagement in a world increasingly shaped by social media hype and political extremes. This episode offers practical insights for anyone navigating today's turbulent political and digital landscape.Text me your feedback and leave your contact info if you'd like a reply (this is a one-way text). There are many people that are involved in developing technologies that think that all technology is good and will always lead to a better future. But is that true? My guest today is John Robb, author of Brave New War and owner and principal analyst for the monthly The Global Guerrillas Report and host of Global Guerrillas. On this episode of The Wiggin Sessions, John joins me to share how disruptive events are impacting change across the globe and how the rise of network swarming through social channels is escalating change and not always in a good way. We talk about how social media escalated the Russian invasion of Ukraine on a global level and brought it up to the edge of a nuclear engagement. Listen in to understand why “the global village isn't the problem, it's the global villagers,” and how the settings of the technological artifact will be the thing that determines our future—if we get it right, the future is going to be amazing, if we don't it will control us. Key Takeaways John shares what network swarming is and how his book, Brave New War is still making waves How network swarming escalated the Russian invasion of Ukraine making it into a war of survival John offers his insight into the pilfering of individual identities and the human characteristics of the network that are not at all human How the printing press was the catalyst for war as we know it today How collective decision-making limits individual idea-expression (and oversteps everything from human rights to politics to the Constitution) What John calls the permit crisis and how feeding the power of the network is hollowing out our values, and stripping our rights John's advice to individuals on living within the network, securing your digital rights, and challenging the Terms of Service trumps the Constitution status quo Connect with John Robb John Robb on Twitter Global Guerrillas Connect with Addison Wiggin Consilience Financial Be sure to follow The Wiggin Sessions on your socials. The TITT Talks Podcast - Modern Women Living in a Mama World
Hey everyone! It's Isa! I am your host for this mini segment where we check in with each other on what is going on in the world, what's the TITT Tea? This will cover the things you are most likely talking with your girlfriends about and can span any subject. Today we are talking about the Facebook/Instagram Outage, the impacts of social media in general on us and our kids, and if Facebook/Instagram execs are putting profits over people. This episode was inspired by The Daily podcast, The Wall Street Journal, NPR and various articles on the subject. This was a little spur of the moment, so if you hear a random phone call in the background, or even a little echo at the end... hey we are working moms and this is what we do best! Multi-task. Take a little mid-day break with us, and let's talk about it! ____________________________________________ ABOUT TITT TALKS TITT Talks was “conceived” in January of 2020 during one of TITT's many friend/family (“framily”) get-togethers. In conversation, it came to light that there was a lack of representation of womxn like TITT in, among other forms of media, the podcast world. In particular, there was no podcast that TITT could subscribe to that would enable them to feel seen, heard, or understood as modern Asian Pacific American working mothers. The womxn of TITT Talks knew that this void was one they could fill by sharing their voices and experiences through their casual conversations, which were already taking place on a routine basis. Thank you for the positive feedback we have received since our launch in early June 2020. We are delighted to hear that we are bringing you content that you can finally relate to as mothers, professionals, millennials, and Asian Pacific Americans. ____________________________________________ CONNECT WITH US Sign up for our NEWSLETTER – TITT Talks Tea IG: titt_talks FACEBOOK: TITT Talks E-MAIL: TITTtalks@gmail.com YOUTUBE: TITT Talks Podcast ____________________________________________

Guest Sansea Kaphan Jacobson, Dartmouth '96, was assured of herself when she arrived at college, pre-med bound. But then she found Sanborn Library and let her love of literature guide her studies and put the pre-med dreams to bed. She took advantage of the corporate recruiting process to find her first job after college in the IT consulting world. She found, however, that she was more interested in impacting the people she served than the project outcomes. She decided to get back on track to the helping professions. After completing the post-bac courses necessary for med school, she had the opportunity to work in a hematology lab at the NIH. An astute mentor told extrovert Sansea that she would likely prefer clinical oncology than the pathology in the lab. So, she pursued this line of work in medical school and found herself bedside with dying patients. The psychiatry rotation showed her that it was really the psychology that had drawn her to that work. Her career now encompasses clinical work with teen experiencing anxiety and suicidal thoughts, but she also advises residents and fellows and mentors them through the psychiatric program. When one student asked about her medical center's wellness education efforts for her fellow practitioners, Sansea realized that it was up to her to lead the program and model what wellness looks like. This Wonderful Women Wednesday features British Journalist Carole Cadwalladr as she explains in several interviews how the power of social media not only affected the outcome of the 2016 election, but how it is affecting the 2020 U.S. election. She talks about how it targets voters and also affects your everyday life. A recent example is how social media had thousands of fake black Trump supporters. Yesterday, Twitter halted an unknown number of fake accounts. I hope you enjoy the narratives, which explains what episodes are about, as well as the graphic attached to each episode, which I diligently search for to match each episode. Does social media stress you out? Research indicates that it can cause anxiety and even depression. I’ve heard countless people say they felt great after taking a break from it. Why is that? In this episode I want to offer a breakdown of the recent social media landscape; how it may be harming us, what we can do to keep our sanity. [04:56] Links between social media and anxiety and depression. [10:37] Social media seems to be getting darker and the cons are beginning to outweigh the pros. [14:23] A large part of it stems from anonymity, and losing face-to-face interactions. [18:49] There's a major lack of accountability. [22:52] There's a lack of discourse and an inflation of terminology. [24:22] The main factor contributing to anxiety is catastrophizing. [25:30] We're also losing our individuality. [26:28] There's a major lack of diversity of thought. [35:38] It's brought back public shaming (which we did away with in the 1800's) [36:33] Can we start interacting online like we do with people offline? [40:50] Social media is heavily influencing us and ultimately enslaving us. Social media is a tool, and all tools can be used for good or evil. It can be a tool that unites us, helps us keep up with friends and family and develop bonds and connections with people we otherwise wouldn’t have the pleasure of meeting. But it can also be a major source of anxiety and depression, and can derail the relationships with people in our “real life”. So let’s re-evaluate our social media habits and make changes where necessary. If we can start giving people the benefit of the doubt and treat each other with respect and dignity (like we would if we were interacting in person), we may see a shift in our interactions online. If you enjoyed this episode and it inspired you in some way, I’d love to hear about your biggest takeaway. In this episode, I discuss three topics related to the media and crime. First, I explore how the news and entertainment media directly effect crime by examining the Great Aggression Model and the Rudder Theory (including copycat criminals). Next I talk about bias in crime reporting, both racial and political. Lastly, I speak to how the media influences criminal justice policy and reform through tactics such as agenda setting and priming, all in an attempt to move forward a political agenda. People look to social media for answers and clues for relationship statuses, equally creating issues and sometimes leading to more problems than necessary in intimate situations - should social media justify your relationships? Join Angela, Adair and Eugene on discussing the effects and nature of putting your intimate status online.
This week we experiment with format, but also with how we think about media, with our guest Shrikanth S. Narayanan, Engineering professor at a University of Southern California. Shri works in an interdisciplinary lab that looks at "data science before it was cool," showing the benefits of interdisciplinarity when studying media and storytelling. He thinks about "signals" from media as data points to see how we react to different stimuli from film and media, which includes physical reactions emerging from particular emotional stimuli. These data points include sweating, and increased heart rate. How can we think, or study, our reactions to storytelling? How do the music, the dialogue, the visual and other stimuli shape our responses to media?
Do you feel that Social Media has had an impact on your relationships? Tune in to see how we feel about it, and we gonna give it to you straight...no chaser!

Inclusion of the Underrepresented: The Beginning of Diverse Ability in Media by Deepi Leihl from 2015's UBC Centennial Radio Documentary Series. "Inclusion of the Underrepresented: The Beginning of Diverse-Ability in Media" follows the story of three radio producers who use CiTR 101.9FM to make radio about accessibility and disability. We mix snippets from a 1985 radio piece made for CiTR, “Media Effects on Youth - Youth Focus Doc” into the narrative. We use these snippets to delve into the impact the production and consumption of media has on people with disabilities. Deepi, has a rare disability called Metatropic Dwarfism. Mollie and Katie, both UBC students, produce a weekly show called, All Access Pass. We explore what brought these producers to where they are, and the impact they have been able to make through CiTR, as well as the impact their experiences have had on them.
