Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Judge Victoria Pratt. Driven. Innovative. Inspiring. These are a few of the words used to describe Judge Victoria Pratt who has gained national and international acclaim for her commitment to reforming the criminal justice system. During her tenure as the Chief Judge in Newark Municipal Court in Newark, New Jersey, she spent years gaining a deep understanding of how justice could be delivered to court participants in a manner that increased their trust in the legal system and changed their behavior. While presiding over Newark Community Solutions, the Community Court Program, she used creative problem solving to provide alternatives to jail to low-level offenders. These alternatives included community service, individual and group counseling sessions, and her signature assignment of introspective essays. Called a pioneer in procedural justice, her respectful approach, and treating individuals with dignity has had a positive effect on court participants' court experience, how the community viewed the court and how court players viewed their roles. Her TED Talk, How Judges Can Show Respect, has gone viral. It has been translated into 11 languages, received over one million views and the Facebook clip has received an astounding 21 million views. A fierce advocate committed to reform, Pratt has worked with jurisdictions across the nation, and as far as Ukraine, England, Trinidad and Tobago, and Mexico. In that role she facilitates workshops and presentations on alternative sentencing for juveniles and adults, as well as procedural justice. As a nationally recognized expert in procedural justice and alternative sentencing, Judge Pratt has been asked by numerous professional organizations to share her story and philosophy. Pratt's work has been featured in The Guardian newspaper, The Simple Idea that Could Transform U.S. Criminal Justice, and Rutgers Magazine, Asking for a Little Respect, both written by Pulitzer prize winning author Tina Rosenberg. She has also appeared on MSNBC's the Melissa Harris Perry Show, the Emmy-award winning PBS show Due Process- Community Court: A Kinder, Gentler Way? and National Public Radio's WBGO: Conversations with Allan Wolper. Now, a Professor at Rutgers Law School in Newark, New Jersey, she teaches Problem Solving Justice and Restorative Justice. She also continues to champion criminal justice reform through her consulting firm Pratt Lucien Consultants, LLC, by sharing her skills and approach with others. As well as speaking to leaders of institutions and organizations about how to heighten and restore respect into their day-to-day operations so that their mission can be better achieved. Pratt is licensed to practice law in both New Jersey and New York, and is admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court. She also facilitates Mountain Movers empowerment sessions to help individuals live their best lives. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/quientueres/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/quientueres/support

Literally, every pledge sends me into an excited squeal of delight. patreon.com/sgrpodcast This week Jaclyn Friedman is here. Known for her incredible work around sexual assault, sexual violence, consent, and sex education, it is a really intense discussion that I can't wait for you to hear. We talk about sexual liberation and why sex positivity must include conversations around sexual violence if it hopes to achieve it's aim. We dive into stealthing and why removing a condom without consent is rape. Jaclyn explores the ways that stealthing is dehumanizing and why this power move is about erasing the humanity of the person you're sleeping with. She also talks about what centering humanity in sex has meant for her - being able to relax into her truth by getting off the sexual Olympics train. Plus, why all this buzz about hook-up culture on college campuses is actually a myth and the impact that myth is having on students. Then we go deep into victim-centering justice, needing community to step in and hold sexually violent people accountable, why transformative justice is not the answer, and she even challenges me on being too generous around people who commit acts of sexual violence. We may not have answers, but we certainly have a lot of feelings and even bigger questions. So strap in and prepare yourself. Don't forget to send in your sex confessions about May's theme of FOOD! Her podcast, Unscrewed, is paving new paths to sexual liberation, and was named one of the Best Sex Podcasts by both Marie Claire and Esquire. Friedman’s work has popularized the “yes means yes” standard of sexual consent that is quickly becoming law on many US campuses. Her insistence that authentic sexual liberation is a necessary condition to end the systemic sexualization and violation of women led Lyn Mikel Brown (Co-founder of SPARK and Professor of Education and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Colby College) to call her “this generation’s version of Dr. Ruth.” Friedman is a popular speaker on campuses and at conferences across the U.S. and beyond. She has been a guest on the Today Show, Nightline, PBS News Hour, the Melissa Harris-Perry Show, and numerous other radio and television shows, and her commentary has appeared in outlets including The New York Times, Vox, Time, The Washington Post, Glamour and The Guardian. HBW083: Evita Turquoise Robinson, Leading the Black Travel Movement

If you’ve ever wanted to lead a nomad life - traveling from place to place, seeing the world, enjoying the cultures and adventures of the entire planet - you are not alone. Evita Turquoise Robison was living the nomadic lifestyle long before she started a Facebook group around the topic - but when she did, it exploded. You can find out what it means to live a nomad life, why Evita and others find it so compelling and fulfilling, and what the Nomadness TV movement is doing to encourage, enable, and build community around a world travel lifestyle. There may be business potential in the things you already love to do. Evita Turquoise Robinson spent a year and a half traveling the world after graduating college, starting with a trip to Europe. She has since visited 20 countries and has lived on 3 different continents. Her love of travel and the adventurous life it provides has motivated her to share that passion with others. Over time she’s discovered that many others share the desire and enjoyment of travel that she has and she’s found great personal satisfaction building a community around travel and nomadic life. You can hear her story and be inspired by her enthusiasm and practical wisdom on this episode of Happy Black Woman. For greater entrepreneurial success, build a community before you build products. One of the lessons Evita learned almost by mistake was that the community she had built around the nomad life and lifestyle was an asset she didn’t know she had. When it came time to build products, courses, and actually monetize her passion for travel she discovered that the group of people who had already gathered around her were just as enthusiastic about her product ideas as she was - and they actually helped her build and refine her products in ways she hadn’t thought possible. You can hear why Evita says you’d be smart to build a community before you build products, on this episode. How to build an automatic focus group to verify that your product ideas will actually sell. One of the great benefits of building a community around your area of focus is that once the relationships are established the people in the community will help you know if your ideas for products or services are actually needed or wanted. All it takes is conversations or polls, posted within the group to get a ton of feedback about the ideas you have. But it won’t happen if you haven’t already built the relationship that enables your community members to trust you. Wouldn’t you like to validate your product ideas BEFORE you spend the time and money developing them? You can, and Evita Turquoise Robinson tells you how on this episode of Happy Black Woman. If you try to do everything you’ll accomplish nothing. As she has struggled to make her business work in the midst of traveling, Evita Robinson has learned that she can’t carry the entire weight of her organization on her own. If she tries, everything suffers in terms of quality and the most important things wind up not getting done because something more urgent always seems to push it out. You can hear how Evita has built a team that helps her run her business and the impact it has on her productivity and profitability, on this episode. Outline of this great episode [0:29] Who is Evita Robinson? [3:02] What happened 5 years ago that made Evita create her brand. [7:54] The reach and impact of Nomadness TV and how the community started. [17:20] How Evita has build her brand and monetized the movement. [25:12] How Evita stays productive and focused on the road. [30:40] The “council” Evita surrounds herself with to ensure things keep rolling. [33:44] Evita’s advice to those starting a business. Since her first taste of Europe at the age of twenty-one, Evita Robinson (Evie), has been to over twenty countries and lived on three different continents. After a year and a half of traveling around the world, she put her degree in Television/Video Production to use, videotaping her life on the NomadnessTV web series. Evie came back to New York on a mission to bridge her love of production and a newfound need for travel. In September 2011, she created the Nomadness Travel Tribe, an online social community for travelers all around the planet, who have the similarity of an urban background and were looking for likeminded travelers to connect with around the world. Nomadness was the first of it's kind targeting diverse millennial travelers, in the newly coined 'urban travel movement'. From the success of the online group, Evie thrust herself into the world of entrepreneurship, and in April 2012, launched the business home for all things Nomadness and travel oriented, Nomadness LLC. The group now currently surpasses 15,000 international members, with over 100,000 passport stamps, and nearly 100 meetups a year. May 22, 2015 Nomadness launched the travel web docuseries, The NOMADNESS Project, Co- Executive Produced by HBO's Issa Rae and Evita, housed on her YouTube channel of over 200,000 subscribers. The continuation of innovating the urban travel space has landed Nomadness in the pages of The New York Times, EBONY, ESSENCE, Entrepreneur.com, The Daily Beast, Huffington Post, Mashable.com, airtime on CNN.com and News One, Facebook Stories, NBC4NY, MSNBC's former Melissa Harris Perry Show, and as a travel expert regular on the tri-state area's award-winning PIX11 news out of New York City. To date, one of the biggest campaigns Nomadness has been featured in, was with Evita as a part of Oxygen Channel's 'In Progress' during Black History Month 2016.

We have a show this week that fills me with pride and anger. The pride comes from the fact that we interview two NFL Hall of Fame players who grew up in the Jim Crow south, went to Historically Black Colleges, and played in the 1960s: Willie Lanier and Ken Houston. We hear their stories and it is – to put it mildly - powerful stuff. The anger comes with our opening topic: my thoughts on the cancelling of MSNBC’s The Melissa Harris Perry Show, a place where I was regularly accorded a platform to discuss the politics of sports. After giving my own thoughts, I speak to original Melissa Harris Perry Show producer - and current MTV News journalist - Jamil Smith about the abrupt cancellation of the show.
