Bioneers: Revolution From the Heart of Nature | Bioneers Radio Series
After accomplished stints as a journalist, author and diplomat, and studying theology at Yale Divinity School, Krista Tippett was struck by a significant gap in the media landscape—a lack of deep, intelligent conversations to explore the spiritual, ethical and moral aspects of human life. What began as a national public radio show in 2003 evolved into the multiple award-winning podcast “On Being” (“wisdom to replenish and orient in a tender, tumultuous time to be alive.”) Gifted with insatiable curiosity, profound relational intelligence, a poetic sensibility, and an ability to unearth revelatory ideas to live by, Krista creates spaces where wisdom can emerge. With her interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral whole systems overview, she's hosted luminaries as disparate as Mary Oliver, Thich Nhat Hahn, Isabel Wilkerson and Desmond Tutu, among many more. Listen to this rare intimate, live interview with her friend, insightful strategist, philanthropist and activist Azita Ardakani. This is an episode of the Bioneers: Revolution from the Heart of Nature series. Visit the radio and podcast homepage to learn more.

In this all-new episode, Krista engages biomimicry pioneer Janine Benyus in a second, urgent conversation, alongside creative biomimicry practitioner Azita Ardakani Walton. Together they trace precise guidance and applied wisdom from the natural world for the civilizational callings before us now. What does nature have to teach us about healing from trauma? And how might those of us aspiring to good and generative lives start to function like an ecosystem rather than a collection of separate, siloed projects? We are in kinship. How to make that real — and in making it real, make it more of an offering to the whole wide world?Krista, Azita, and Janine spoke at the January 2024 gathering of visionaries, activists, and creatives where Krista also drew out Lyndsey Stonebridge and Lucas Johnson for the recent episode on Hannah Arendt. We're excited to bring you back into that room.Janine Benyus's classic work is Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature. She is the co-founder of the non-profit Biomimicry Institute. She also co-founded Biomimicry 3.8, a consulting and training company. Azita Ardakani Walton is a philanthropist and social entrepreneur. Her projects have included, among many things, the creative agency Lovesocial and the experimental investment vehicle, Honeycomb Portfolio. Azita Ghanizada is currently making her Broadway debut in "The Kite Runner" as Soraya, and is now the first woman of Afghan descent to originate a role on Broadway. As we learn, Azita's childhood life was far from ordinary and easy. Her family fled Afghanistan and ended up in the US as political asylum seekers. Similarly to what happens in “The Kite Runner”, she had trouble getting citizenship because she didn't have proper paperwork, including her birth certificate. She talks about growing up and learning how to speak English through watching tv shows and movies, which has also sparked her interest in acting. She shares how she pursued acting by buying a one-way ticket to Hollywood and ended up working at E! for a couple of years where she learned everything about show business. From finding a loophole in not getting jobs she used to get to being told she was white, Azita, together with other actors who joined her cause, successfully drafted a new SAG-AFTRA – AMPTP TV/Theatrical hiring contract for the first time in 37 years. She also talked about MENA Arts Advocacy Coalition, an organization she founded to support and educate. Azita reflects on the issues we still need to fight for such as inclusion, and why we have to create from our heart and operate from a place of truth and integrity. Azita Ghanizada is an Afghan American actress who began her on-air camera career as a commercial model. Her family fled Afghanistan to the US and were granted asylum to remain. She has appeared in numerous television series, including “How I Met Your Mother”, “Entourage”, “Veronica Mars”, “The Wedding Bells”, “NUMB3RS”, “Bones”, “Psych” and “Castle”. Her film credits include "Killroy Was Here", “Our Friend”, “We Broke Up”, “Draupadi Unleashed”, “Complete Unknown”, “X's & O's”, and “A Kiss on the Nose” where she received a film festival best actress nomination for her performance. She's the Founder and President of MENA Arts Advocacy Coalition, an organization she launched after helping build the MENA category into the SAG-AFTRA theatrical contracts. In 2020, she gave her first TEDx talk on the path to visibility in Hollywood. In addition to "Ballers," and Freeform's "Good Trouble," she's also got a recurring role on the CBS show, “United States of Al” and is currently performing in Broadway's "The Kite Runner" as Soraya. RAMS Ask a Chair Podcast - Moderated by: Hamza Ijaz, MD, University of Cincinnati
https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/matt-sweeney (Matt Sweeney) doesn't want to dazzle you with rock guitar. That's boring. That's lazy. At least to him. He wants to mesmerize you. “Really, that's the point of music: to get people's minds off of whatever and to hypnotize them a little bit,” https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/matt-sweeney (Sweeney told PG in 2021). After beginning his Superwolves collaboration with Will Oldham, “that's when I thought, ‘Cool, I did the thing that I wanted to do. I can fingerpick now and I can play with a really great singer who is working in an idiom that I hadn't worked in before.' “I started playing with Will and that gave me the opportunity to keep developing the way that I was playing, because it went well with his singing. After a couple of years, that led to Will suggesting that we write songs together.” The audible opiate that Sweeney provides has also cast his spell over the works of Rick Rubin, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Adele, https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/cat-powers-journey (Cat Power), Run the Jewels, Chavez, John Legend, Zwan (collaboration with Billy Corgan), Tinariwen, “Cowboy” Jack Clement, https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/the-big-5/billy-gibbons (Billy Gibbons), and Margo Price. And with every episode of hypnosis comes a trance-breaking snapback. Providing that rhythmic recoil is Sweeney's current foil, https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/ty-segall-and-emmett-kelly-no-filter-frenzy (Emmett Kelly). Both have worked with Oldham, but until now—in the current Superwolves line-up—never together. Kelly steps into the fold with an indie and outsiders Rolodex filled with names like https://www.premierguitar.com/artists/guitarists/ty-segall (Ty Segall), Angel Olson, Azita, Cairo Gang, Mikal Cronin, The C.I.A., Earth Girl Helen Brown, Magic Trick, Doug Paisley, and Joan of Arc. Sweeney sums up their guitar-nership with his typical, sly-and-dry snark: “What's important about the way me and Emmett play together is that we never talk about it [laughs]. It's true! He's like the best guitar player. He's a master at making everything sound better. We've both worked together—but mostly separately—with our singer Will Oldham, and it was his suggestion that we should all go out together [without bass and drums] because it should be good. But really, we've never had to talk about it, and we just play. It's been a lot of fun.” So, when PG's Chris Kies recently connected with Sweeney and Kelly, they were providing a guitar backdrop for a headlining set fronted by Bonnie “Prince” Billy Oldham at Nashville's Mercy Lounge, supporting Sweeney and Billy's 2021 release, Superwolves. While the conversation with both does cover their spartan setups, the meat of the message is how gear is a tool for storytelling, humility, and liberation. Oh … but Kelly does reveal a Japanese gem that takes a guitar signal and reanimates it into anime speech-like phrases! [Brought to you by https://ddar.io/XSE.RR (D'Addario XS Electric Strings).]

“It was very early and I was still in bed when I heard someone yelling from my backyard. When I pulled the curtain back and saw a bunch of armed men jumping into my backyard, I first thought I was dreaming. But before I could figure out what was going on, they started shooting at my house. I froze by the window and my heart was coming out of my chest but I gathered all my strength and ran into my parent's room. My dad jumped out of bed, he was going in the direction of the shots but I grabbed him and begged him to stay. We all gathered in a small windowless space. We were hearing gunshots, the sound of broken glass, and some vague noises.” -Azita Alavi Azita Alavi is a Human Potential Coach, who has dedicated herself to helping People Discover their Greatness and Unlimited Potential through Raising Awareness and Mastering their Neuro-Communication. Byron speaks with Azita Azani about the future of ai and how it can and cannot evolve based on the limits of 'artificial' intelligence. Episode 116 – A Conversation with Azita Arvani
From a young age, television and cinema were a powerful force of influence in Azita Ghanizada’s life. Through these mediums, she could escape her difficult life as a young Afghan-American immigrant; she could develop her skills as an English speaker; she could bond with her parents. And through all of these impacts coming together, Azita came to realize that she, too, wanted to someday be on the other side of the screen. She wanted to help people to escape their difficult realities like others had done for her, and she instinctually knew that she could channel the agony and the ecstasy of her life into compelling performance.Azita Ghanizada's journey began in Afghanistan. Born in Kabul on the eve of the 1980s, Azita and her family were among the fortunate who were allowed entry into the United States by way of asylum. Unlike many others, they were given the chance to escape the violence and poverty that surrounded them. Azita holds this event near to her heart, and considers it nothing short of an act of divine intervention for her and her family. Even at the age of four, the pain of leaving their lives, family and friends behind, and the prospect of continuing life in an unknown land, was difficult and traumatic for Azita.Looking back on her experiences growing up in Fairfax County, Virginia — from elementary school to college — Azita looks back with a sense of pride at the long, winding, and unforgiving road that helped shape her. From a young age, Azita recognized a strong desire to take control of her own life. Frustration at her parents' restrictions led to impulsive behavior, but eventually Azita was able to navigate her way through this period of self-discovery, and came out the other side with a graceful confidence.Once out of college, Azita decided it was time to take her life into her own hands in a big way. She told her parents that she was moving to Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. She would work as much as she needed to save up the funds, and she would find her own way. True to her word, she eventually landed a job at E! television network, where she learned the ropes of the entertainment industry. It was during this time that she was given access to some of her first acting classes. It didn’t take long for her far-reaching talent to be recognized, and today she is an accomplished actress in film and television.Today, Azita’s purpose has evolved into an effort to give voice to the voiceless by fighting for fair portrayal and equal representation of Mid-East, North-African, and South-Asian actors and actresses. She is the founder of the MENA Arts Advocacy Coalition, which aims to “… build a more balanced and positive representation of [Mid-East, North-African, and South-Asian] people.". If Azita isn’t on the frontlines, talking to industry decision-makers about how to solve the issues of misrepresentation, then she is empowering - through her own work - others who deserve the right to be themselves onscreen.--For full show noteshttps://www.baktashahadi.com/podcastConnect with Azita GhanizadaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/azitagram/Twitter: https://twitter.com/AzitaGhanizada?s=20IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1671257/ResourcesLearn more about the MENA Arts Advocacy Coalition:https://www.menaartsadvocacy.com/Watch Azita Ghanizada's TEDxTalk, "How I discovered my purpose from watching television":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGKp-G_YGoI&app=desktopFollow/Support Stories of Transformation and Baktash AhadiDonate to the production of this podcast https://www.baktashahadi.com/supportFollow us on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/stories_of_transformation/Follow us on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/storiesoftransformationpodcast/CreditsProduced by: Joseph Gangemihttps://www.linkedin.com/in/joseph-gangemi-audio/Digital Marketing & Media by: Katherine Anhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/katherine-a-91081b56/Theme music by: Qais Essarwww.therabab.comArtwork by: Masheed Ahadihttps://www.LinkedIn.com/in/masheedEpisode Music Credits"A Certain Distance" by Sean Williams"August" by Philip Daniel Zach (feat. From Afghanistan to Hollywood, Azita Ghanizada is the American Dream. You probably recognize her from her roles on General Hospital, Entourage, Ballers, and many more—'cause she is a hustler. Azita came to America as a child seeking asylum from Afghanistan and settled in Virginia. She was greeted with rocks instead of warm wishes from her neighbors—and at that young age, she found comfort in television, and eventually ended up being on the screen she so loved. In this conversation, Azita talks about how television became her passion at a young age, and why it didn't seem like the industry wanted her at that time. When Hollywood wanted to typecast her in roles because of her ethnicity, she organized and founded the MENA Arts Advocacy Coalition which fights for the advancement and visibility of Middle Eastern North African performers on-screen. Now her destiny isn't to just be on TV screens, but to open the doors for others who look like her and share the spotlight. Azita Khatami’s story is an empowering tale of a typical stay home mother from the middle east. Back home, her husband provided financially while she was responsible for everything kids and house related. After they won the green card lottery and moved to the States, they happily maintained their culture until the accident. The tragic accident that killed her husband. Losing her husband, Azita had to make a major decision, leaving the states knowing financial and emotional support is readily available back home or to keep her late husband’s promise and fight her way through life’s obstacles. Political Blackness is more about the colour of your politics than the colour of your skin. Back in October 2019, to celebrate Black History Month in Scotland, we recorded an event in which Khadija, Hashim, Franklin, Eyram, Jatin, Azita and Mélina discuss the origins of political Blackness, its current use and its future. This episode explores the lived experiences of political Blackness in the UK, in Scotland and beyond. What are its benefits and drawbacks? It can challenge whiteness and resist the erasure of the “B” in BME, BAME which risk simply becoming ME (Minority Ethnic). But does it erase anti-blackness and colourism? This week, I’m speaking with Azita Ardakani all about biomimicry, which according to Azita, is about revealing nature’s strategies to solve problems or create new innovations. She’s currently studying biomimicry at Arizona State University, but prior to this, Azita had an incredibly successful career living in New York City as the founder of Lovesocial, a communications agency that landed her on the Forbes 30 under 30 list. I don’t want to give too much away because I think Azita should share her story in her own words, but Azita chose a radical path and left her agency and life in New York for an extended moment of pause and contemplative connection with the natural world. Her story is nature’s story - resilient, complex, full of opposites, and ever expansive.

Född i Teheran, bosatt i Sollentuna. Producent: Marie-Caroline Biver

Much of Azita Ghahreman's work is deeply personal yet infused with political undertones. Her poems often reflect on her childhood growing up in a land-owning family in the South-Eastern Khorasan province of Iran – referenced in evocative images of the natural world amongst which she grew up – and on the changing face of modern Iran. This is part of our new rebranded weekly release: the Dual Poetry Podcast, one poem in two languages from the Poetry Translation Centre. As ever we will be releasing a translated poem each week. Azita Ghahreman was born in Mashhad in 1962. One of Iran's leading poets, she has lived in Sweden since 2006. She is a member of the South Sweden Writers' Union. Her poems directly address questions of female desire and challenge the accepted position of women. Negative of a Group Photograph is the title poem of her new book published in 2018 by the PTC and Bloodaxe Books. The collection runs the gamut of Ghahreman’s experience: from her childhood in the Khorasan region of south-eastern Iran to her exile to Sweden, from Iran's book-burning years and the war in Iraq to her unexpected encounters with love. A chilly poem: ‘Snow’ by the wonderful Iranian poet, Azita Ghahreman, who now lives in exile in snowy Sweden. The seemingly endless snow is a metaphor for the hopelessness the poet feels – she and her lover are lost in its vastness. Only ‘a single stray earring’ can be seen – ‘not a tree, not a rabbit, not a star’. You can buy the book 'Negative of A Group Photo' from the PTC online: petrytranslation.org/shop.

Speaking of Partnership: Personal Stories of the Power and Payoffs of Partnership
Do you follow your "Yes?"Following your "Yes" is about you taking a step forward in your partnerships by taking action and applying at least one thing you heard from our guests during their interviews this week. On today’s episode, all of this week’s guests have generously provided BONUS MATERIAL, not included in the interviews you listened to earlier this week. Each one has provided incredible examples of the power of following your “Yes”. Enjoy! Dr. Azita NahaiNot Following - Azita’s big “Yes” was in an abusive relationship. She had a big “Yes” that showed up as a “don’t go this way” message when she met this person, but she paid no attention. Where she didn’t follow her “Yes” was when she chose to be in this relationship and then staying in it even when she had opportunities to get out. Even when people offered to help she was so afraid that she stayed. She was so disconnected from her body that she did not follow the guidance it offered. Ultimately Azita had to hit rock bottom and feel so much pain to finally ask for help. But you don’t have to go that far if you connect with your body and pay attention to the guidance it is providing. Following - Our “Yeses” really are no brainers. Meaning they are meant to come from the body. We are meant to feel it. Azita was approached by the people she worked for at a yoga studio about a recovery program she had taken because the creators of the program wanted to come present it at their studio. Without a thought, she said “Oh never mind that program. You guys need my program.” The truth was she had not created her Trauma to Dharma program yet. But they agreed to have her teach it in 3 months. And she sold a program she hadn’t fully created yet. Plus this program is now the basis of all her work. He was rude to other people and talked about people behind their backs. This made Camille feel uncomfortable but she rationalized it by thinking “he doesn’t do that to me.” Turns out this rudeness he was showing to others eventually was shown to her too. Though she knew in her gut his behavior was not acceptable, she made excuses for him and convinced herself that they would get back to the honeymoon period but it never happened and the relationship ended. If she had paid attention to and followed her “Yes” she could have saved herself from much of the pain she went through. Following - Camille met her best friend via 3 “random” meetings over 3 - 4 years. After the third time she realized that clearly the Universe was pushing them to hang out together. Speaking of Partnership: Personal Stories of the Power and Payoffs of Partnership
Dr. Azita Nahai is a Kundalini Yogi, speaker and therapist. She is the founder of Trauma to Dharma™ ~an experiential method that integrates a holistic mind-body-spirit approach to healing trauma and transforming one’s pain into purpose. As a domestic abuse survivor turned thriver Dr. Nahai experienced a piece missing in her own recovery, and so, she created it. Her decades of research support the use of Kundalini yoga and meditation as a valuable therapeutic modality in post-traumatic growth. As a trauma specialist, she is fueled by her passion to awaken and empower others to become conscious and active participants in their own healing. Dr. Nahai’s anticipated Trauma to Dharma™ book launches in Winter 2017. Guiding Principle, Quote or Mantra Don’t waste a good trigger. Your partnerships are mine fields of triggers and they are their for a reason. When You Tripped Up Azita lost herself in an abusive relationship for six years in her early 20’s. She was looking for anything and anyone to fill an emptiness that she felt inside. She was struggling with her own pain from childhood and found a bigger pain to focus on in this abusive relationship. Azita started to lose herself in order to accommodate someone else. She would do anything to seek approval even if it meant she went completely unseen. She needed to lose herself in order to find herself. The “DUH” moment that changed your partnerships forever Azita’s ‘DUH” moment happened when she was going through her immigration interview to become a U.S. citizen. The immigration officer called her out on a period of her life where she essentially went missing. This was the time that Azita was away at treatment and completely off the map and in hiding. Her defenses started to come up and she wanted to armor up. But instead she took a breath and told the officer the truth. And the woman said “me too.” This moment has informed Azita’s life. The realization that we’re not meant to go through this life alone was a huge breakthrough for her. What is the best partnership / relationship advice you have ever received? Whenever we come to a place of disagreement, go on a silent meditative walk with your partner. Don’t speak. Go outside. No talking, just walking. This will help you to move the energy/emotions. Our guest today is a successful actress who arrived in Hollywood over a decade ago with a one-way ticket and her mother's beaten-up suitcase. Since then she's landed many prominent roles including a lead role in Alphas on the American Syfy Channel. She's also been on Entourage, How I Met Your Mother, Veronica Mars, The Mentalist among countless other shows. Azita Ghanizada joins us from LaLa land. Her personal journey is a fascinating one. Her family fled to the U.S. when she was just a baby, seeking asylum to escape war-torn Afghanistan. So, after receiving her B.A. in English and Journalism, she left for Hollywood. That's where our interview begins...What were those first few years auditioning like? How did she afford to make ends meet? What do her parents think now of her career choice? Azita is also a humanitarian. She focuses on issues surrounding women in war-torn areas, whether it’s co-hosting a United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees fundraiser for World Refugee Day or serving as a Global Ambassador for womenforwomen.org. The story of Azita's journey to God
