First up is Chris Crofton also known as the Advice King for his column with the Nashville Scene. He's a comedian, musician, philosopher and an interesting human being. He recently ran for local office and reflected on that journey as well as what it means to be a person who cares about the city they live in. He travels to the halls of Metro Council to Trader Joe's as he explores his civic duty. Also... The diversity of Nashville is growing by leaps and bounds…every day. But are we living that diversity? Podcaster and social justice leader Jerome Moore asks that question in the latest edition of Diversely Segregated. He explores the question in his conversations with two folks who live in Music City, Michele Johnson with the Tennessee Justice Center and jazz musician Kyle Gregory. If you want to talk with Jerome about our city being diversely segregated fill out this survey. Tonight's special guest is Michele Johnson from Bartow, Florida, a returning NAASCA family member who says, "It's been several years and much has changed." Michele was sexually abused by multiple men and women between the ages of 5 and 15. Later, at 16, she began to be sexually trafficked. Growing up her home was filled with addictions, violence, mental abuse and sexual abuse. As an adult, she reports, "I was able to keep my trauma in check until I was stranded in Hurricane Harvey in 2017." This event triggered memories and flashbacks of all the trauma and abuses. "I had to seek help after realizing that my suicidal thoughts were overtaking my life. I started therapy two months after the hurricane and continue today with two trauma therapists." She tells her story to bring hope to other trauma survivors and to let them know they are not alone. "I have been speaking, writing, and advocating since 2018. I blog my healing journey (be sure to check out the BLOG: 'Being MJ Everyday') and hope to educate therapists, law enforcement, teachers and other professionals about the devastating effects of trauma and the process and experiences of healing." Her BLOG is honest. "It's only been the last two years that I have begun to feel love and accepted in my relationships. I put away some older, not so healthy relationships and started to develop new ones. I have begun to place more value on myself than what others think of me." She continues, "I won't lie. I still struggle with whether or not I am good enough. I struggle with the fear that my friends will leave or abandon me. But I have begun to accept that what happened to me has given me purpose."

The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: We have a special podcast episode for you! This week, Michele and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about how we are spending our 1000 hours. What if you have been putting 10,000 hours into your self-doubt? Highlights from the conversation: The concept of 10,000 hours Some of you may have already heard about 10,000-hour rule, which was popularized by Malcolm Gladwell's best-selling book "Outliers." According to Gladwell, the rule states that mastery of complex skills and materials requires 10,000 hours of intensive practice. 10,000 hours of negative conversation Imagine spending 10,000 hours to thoughts saying you're “not good enough”, and “not worthy”. That doesn't sound good, right? So, when you want to shift and change those things, it does not happen overnight. You will have to put in the work to start shifting your conversations. Slowly learning, slowly growing When you get cuts or bruises, there is a healing process. First, the tissues start to change. Then, you might get a little layer of skin over it. However, if you bumped into something, it gets exposed again. Then you will have to go over the healing process. The same is true with our emotional health. We also need to heal from our trauma, negative experiences and conversations. -------- Event details: The Women's Legacy Retreat Where: Lake Chatuge, Georgia Mountains Who: Women looking to Empower their Life & Rewrite Their Story When: June 24-26th How: Come Find Out - We're Uncovering Those Inherited Conversations (& some we NEVER discuss)…and healing, reframing, holding the PEN to write your next Chapter!! The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: This week, Michele and I took the conversation to another level as we talk about the importance of unplugging to reset. Let's have a meaningful conversation on unplugging – why do we need it, how it will help us, and what to expect during this retreat. Highlights from the conversation: What does unplugging mean? Digitization is the conversion of text, pictures, or sound into a digital form that can be processed by a computer or other digital device. The gives us so many access to information online. On the flip note, digitization also has side effects that makes us not learn, think, or be as creative as well, because we are so busy on our devices, that we are no longer curious or connecting with people. Unplugging means disconnecting from the internet. Why is it important to unplug? It is essential to have the opportunity to connect with nature and with each other. To some of us, touch is a love language, while some of us are hesitant, because they do not know how healing it can be. Surprisingly, sometimes, the best way to unplug ourselves is to be with others. Those who most need to unplug hesitate on doing it Sometimes those who need it the most will have all the excuse they can find. We can say we are too busy or it's way too far from where you're located. The thing is, if you have something that could get in the way, when you register, it will work itself out – because you will be motivated. You will find the ways to make it work. -------- Even details: The Women's Legacy Retreat Where: Lake Chatuge, Georgia Mountains Who: Women looking to Empower their Life & Rewrite Their Story When: June 24-26th How: Come Find Out - We're Uncovering Those Inherited Conversations (& some we NEVER discuss)…and healing, reframing, holding the PEN to write your next Chapter!!
