Start today, with just $5K, at equitymultiple.com_______"Have you ever hesitated to ask for what you truly want because of a fear of rejection or judgment?"In this episode, Dr. Kristine Goins interviews Dr. La Toya Luces-Sampson, who reveals how the simple act of asking can unlock greater freedom, confidence, and fulfillment. Dr. Toya explains that, despite medical culture often stigmatizing self-advocacy, asking is not just a negotiation skill but a life-changing habit that aligns personal and professional values.Dr. Toya sheds light on barriers such as fear of rejection, cultural conditioning, and judgment that discourage physicians from requesting better schedules, pay, or wellness accommodations. She reframes "no" as an opportunity to understand objections, gain clarity, and move closer to "yes." Her approach focuses on understanding your true desires, knowing the real reason behind your requests, and ensuring everything you ask for reflects your value and matches what matters most to you. BioDr. La Toya Luces-Sampson, affectionately known as Dr. Toya on social media, is a wife, mother, board-certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist, perinatal mental health specialist, and Coach. Born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, she moved to the United States where she went on to earn both her Bachelor and Medical Degrees from Howard University in an accelerated 6-year BS/MD program. She completed her residency training at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia and has lived in Northern California since. After caring for pregnant and postpartum women as an OBGYN for more than a decade, she now focuses on the unique needs of physician moms who rarely feel supported as they navigate caring for their babies, a new identity, and the ongoing intensity of clinical medicine. Dr. Toya helps Physician Moms set up systems, navigate complications, advocate for themselves in both personal and professional contexts, so they can feel good about themselves, with confidence and joy. In this episode, Dr. Mina and Dr. Zain Husain talk about what it takes to keep your skin healthy. They cover the importance of sun protection, good lifestyle habits, and how social media influences the way we see skin. They also discuss common skincare mistakes, must-have products, and how in-office treatments can help. The conversation highlights the need for personalized skincare routines and the benefits of seeing a board-certified dermatologist for the best results. Tune in to this week's podcast with Dr. Zain Husain as he breaks down what ‘healthy' skin really means, why it's important, and how to achieve it. He also covers common mistakes, his go-to procedures, and his top 3 takeaways for achieving healthy, glowing skin! Key Takeaways: - Healthy skin is defined by multiple factors, not just aesthetics. - Sun protection is crucial for preventing skin damage and disease. - Diet, antioxidants, and lifestyle choices significantly impact skin health. - Avoid following skincare trends blindly; consult a dermatologist for personalized advice. - Overusing products can harm the skin barrier; less is often more. - Essential skincare includes sunscreen, a good cleanser, and vitamin C serum. - In-office procedures can enhance skin health but should be approached conservatively. - Social media can create unrealistic beauty standards that affect self-esteem. - It's important to recognize that perfection in skin is not achievable or necessary. - Regular consultations with dermatologists can lead to better skincare outcomes. Dr. Zain Husain, MD, FAAD is a dual board-certified dermatologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon, fellowship-trained in cosmetic dermatology. He began his medical education when he was accepted into the highly competitive accelerated 7-year BS/MD program with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, where he graduated with top academic honors and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. There, he received extensive training in advanced skin cancer surgery and reconstruction as well as cosmetic procedures including injectables, body contouring, and laser surgery. Following fellowship, Dr. Husain worked in private practice in Washington, DC and New Jersey before establishing his private practice, Noor Dermatology and Aesthetics in Cary, NC. In this episode you will hear:   (07:44) Mark and Dave discuss a March 29th article by Kyle Mullins in the Dartmouth, the nation's oldest college newspaper entitled, “The Right Play”. The article looks at how many varsity sports Dartmouth offers that are rarely played in high school. Mullins looks at Dartmouth's decision to drop five of their varsity sports.       (39:47) For our question from a listener, comes from Cadence, a student a Stuyvesant HS in NYC. Cadence sent in two questions about interviews that we will answer over the next two weeks:   If I am in a college interview and they ask me, what is one of your weaknesses, how am I supposeed to answer that question.   (55:00) Our interview is with Dr. Robert Alexander, the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid and Enrollment Management. In Part 2 of 2, Mark and Dr. Alexander discuss the following: For your BS/MD program (Rochester Early Medical Scholars): what's the process and the profile of an admitted student? Talk to us about how your Early Assurance partnerships work for a number of Liberal Arts schools that do not have medical schools What are your priorities in the application evaluation process: what are you looking for in terms of academics, personal qualities, diversity that may differ from some other schools?  What types of students are underrepresented on your campus that you are hoping to enroll more of over the next five years? UR is known for its merit funding; are applicants automatically considered, what are the criteria and the range of the merit scholarships? What are UR students happiest about? What would they like to change? How would you describe the city of Rochester to a student who is unfamiliar with upstate NY (including the weather!)? What other colleges/universities would you say are the most similar to UR? Mark puts Robert on the hotseat for our lightening round   The University of Rochester interview will also serve as our college spotlight.    (01:12:42) The recommended resource is  Nathan Grawe's most recent book: “The Agile College” How institutions successfully navigate demographic changes. When you hear “resume,” you probably think (perhaps with a shudder) of applying for a job. But since a document like this serves as a succinct summary of someone’s experience, educational background, and special skills, it also makes a surprising difference when applying to a school. Amy and Mike invited college counseling expert Judi Robinovitz to detail the process of crafting a college resume.  What are five things you will learn in this episode? How important is it for a high school student to create a resume for college admissions? What should a college resume look like both digitally and physically? How do verbs like initiate, lead, collaborate, and solve matter on your resume? What can students do to build a resume under unusual circumstances? How does building a high school resume help students later? MEET OUR GUESTS Judi Robinovitz is a Certified Educational Planner with more than thirty-five years of experience in college counseling and school placements. She is the author of numerous articles, books, and software products on educational planning and test preparation. On this week's The Sci-Files, your hosts Chelsie and Danny interview Emma Dester and Saad Sharief. Emma is a dual-enrolled BS/MD student in the MSU Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department (BAE). She has been doing research in the Nano-Biosensors Laboratory for almost four years. Saad is a Ph.D. student, also in BAE, and is currently in his 4th year of the graduate program. His research interests lie in the synthesis and applications of nanomaterials, biosensors for pathogen detection, and anti-counterfeiting technologies to prevent drug trafficking. The Nano-Biosensors Laboratory focuses on developing cost-effective and rapid diagnostic methods that require less equipment and labor than traditional approaches. For the past year, both Emma and Saad have been working on nanoparticle-based methods to rapidly identify foodborne pathogens. In the United States alone, these pathogens are responsible for over 3,000 deaths each year. Traditional methods for detecting these common pathogens (Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, and Escherichia coli ) are a time-consuming process and require at least 24-48 hours. Their research focuses on the rapid identification of these organisms, reducing both the time and cost associated with these traditional methods. First, they use magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to extract bacteria from contaminated food. After extracting bacterial DNA, they use a simple colorimetric test to detect the presence of target bacteria. This test uses a gold nanoparticle-based assay and has the potential to produce results in under five minutes. Although research is still ongoing, current progress shows this new method to be a promising time-saving and life-saving technique for detecting pathogens in food. If you're interested in talking about your MSU research on the radio or nominating a student, please email Chelsie and Danny at scifiles@impact89fm.org. ProspectiveDoctor | Helping you achieve your medical school dreams | AMCAS | MCAT

Yash Kamani, a current student at Northwestern's combined undergraduate and medical school program, hosts today’s episode to give a quick intro to what a BS/MD direct program is. For anyone considering this path, he provides guidance on what questions to ask yourself in order to move through the process smoothly. [1:03] What a direct program is. At the crux of all direct programs is the idea of a conditional acceptance to medical school right out of high school. This means that once you are accepted into an undergraduate college, you’ll also have a conditional acceptance to a medical school sometime in the future. This allows for the skipping of the formal medical school application process. [3:11] Requirements. The conditions differ from program to program, but the two main ways are MCAT and GPA requirements. Some programs don’t require you to take the MCAT at all. Almost every program requires a certain GPA. [6:27] What to think about regarding direct programs. “Why do I really want this?” “What would I do with more free time in college?” “Do I understand and feel prepared to take on the challenges of being a pre-medical student?” [8:47] More specific things to think about. “How long do I want my undergraduate career to last?” “What interests am I planning to pursue in college?” “Am I willing to stay in the same college or place for a long time?” “How important is the prestige of the undergraduate institution to me?” Next time, we’ll do a deeper dive into all of the questions brought forth including how you should feel about certain answers. We’ll also hear more about the BS/MD pros and cons.
