In this episode of Promoted: Stop Doubting, Start Leading, host Karen Gombault dives into the hidden patterns of self-sabotage that hinder your leadership potential. Drawing from Positive Intelligence® and her coaching expertise, Karen unpacks the 10 saboteurs that hold leaders back and offers insights to help you recognize and overcome these behaviors. Whether it's procrastination, perfectionism, or people-pleasing, this episode will deepen your self awareness.Key Takeaways:Self-sabotage often stems from ingrained mental patterns called saboteurs, rooted in survival mechanisms developed during childhood. The master saboteur, "The Judge," criticizes you, others, and circumstances, often working alongside accomplice saboteurs to amplify self-doubt and unproductive behaviors. The 9 accomplice saboteurs include The Controller, Avoider, Hyper-Achiever, Pleaser, Stickler, Hyper-Rational, Hyper-Vigilant, Restless, and Victim, each with distinct behaviors and impacts.Awareness of your saboteurs is the first step toward breaking these patterns and shifting toward more empowering behaviors.Tools like the free saboteur assessment can provide clarity on which saboteurs dominate your thinking and how to address them effectively."Your saboteurs are not a reflection of your value—they're simply patterns you've developed over time, and with awareness, they can be changed."- Karen GombaultSelf-sabotage may feel like an unavoidable part of leadership, but it doesn't have to be. By recognizing the saboteurs at play and taking intentional steps to address them, you can lead with greater confidence, clarity, and purpose. Start today by building awareness and taking the free saboteur assessment linked in the show notes. Every step you take toward understanding these patterns is a step toward transforming your leadership journey.Karen is a leadership coach and mentor, working with recently promoted women to help them stop doubting and start leading.Further resources :Ready to uncover your saboteurs and take the first step toward deeper awareness? On this episode Kat is joined by Lucy Cox, a confidence expert, to talk about the connection between neurodiversity (particularly ADHD) and habits. KEY TAKEAWAYS We take on so much information. There are so many ‘shoulds', I'm writing a book about ‘should' because it's this toxic stick that we whack ourselves over the head with We should be better, we should be more active, we should have better habits, etc. It pops up everywhere in our lives, and the more we consume self-help advice, courses, talks, etc, we accumulate more ‘shoulds' and it becomes so overwhelming we don't know where to start. I didn't set out to go into the world of self-confidence, it's a personal quest. When you hit your 40s it's one of those things that starts to come to a head, whether that's feeling like you should be further ahead in your career, the business should be doing better, further ahead in your relationships, etc. It's not gender or geographically specific You can advise 100 different entrepreneurs on the same task and they'll all approach it differently. When you examine what sits behind that you start to see that it's the way people are deciding to keep themselves safe – socially, emotionally, physically, financially – that comes from the things that we're told, the things we believe to be true about ourselves, about other people, about what an entrepreneur is. We're born with a certain personality and pull between positive and negative; we're innately programmed to keep ourselves safe in very different ways. You can look at twins and they ways they self-sabotage, one might be a very active energy – controller, hyper achiever – and one may be a passive energy – victim, people pleaser. But you can see that from the day they're born. BEST MOMENTS “Talking without action is pointless.” “When you give someone the olive branch of being able to design something like a new positive habit for themselves, there's a different commitment to following through with it.” “There are so many microaggressions that we come into contact within our lifetimes.” “ADHD is the disability of social disapproval, the presentation is disorganisation, forgetfulness, chaotic, the inability to follow-through, compulsive, and not socially acceptable and not-visible All you life you have to make excuses to fit in.” ABOUT THE GUEST Lucy Cox is an award-winning business and confidence coach with over 14 years of experience in the field of coaching, training, impactful program development, and facilitation. Lucy is a certified Positive Intelligence Coach and Life Coach who brings a wealth of real-life experience; as a coach, an entrepreneur, and (importantly) as a human being. No stranger to the ups and downs of leadership, parenthood, relationships and personal growth, Lucy brings a warm, personal, empathetic energy to everything she does, developing strong, honest relationships and creating lasting impacts for all clients. Website ABOUT THE HOST Kat started her career as a teacher, before moving into Tech where she worked in different executive roles within teaching and consulting working across the globe, both in the public and private sector. Despite appearing 'successful' on the outside, she paid a heavy ‘life' price. In 2016, her whole world collapsed. The reason? The compound effect of years of unhealthy and toxic habits that destroyed her health, relationship and career. She suffered a severe breakdown and lost everything. In the middle of this she got headhunted for her first CEO role. She rebuilt herself by changing just one small habit, and built a series of positive habits which has transformed her professional and personal performance, resulting in becoming the healthiest and happiest version of herself. She is a positive habits international keynote speaker and teacher, giving talks and delivering high impact programmes to organisations across the globe. LinkedIn Instagram

Rose Ann Forte was a successful C-Suite executive and leader in the church, a working mom of four, and a social drinker. Over the years, life's stresses and a difficult marriage created an environment where her alcohol usage increased significantly. After the collapse of her marriage, her drinking further escalated and she felt like a fraud. She was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and asked God to take her off this earth. Her experience was extremely transformational, and she recognized God's instruction embedded in the entire process. She became free of the psychological slavery of this habit through this process. My guest today is Rose Anne Forte (For-Tay). She is an Alcohol-Free coach, a Positive Intelligence Coach and an International Best-Selling author of the award winning daily devotional titled, “The Plans He Has for Me.” Today's episode is discovering more about her 12 week devotional and the challenge to purposefully consider the possibility of a transformed life. Rose Ann was a successful executive, ministry leader in the church, bible teacher, mom, wife and more but when her marriage fell apart she found herself in a place of desiring to be free from the psychological slavery of her alcohol habit. One of the great things I feel that Rose Ann is doing in the program that she's created (by marrying the secular addiction program she used with the true, lasting hope and change that the God of the Holy Bible offers), is to shift our mindset about labels such as alcoholic, recovery and sober. In my personal opinion, she's taken a very practical approach about these 3 words moving them from a secular viewpoint to the transformed reality that God provides. That made sense to me because of the complete work of Christ on the cross and the fact that by His stripes we are healed. Not partially healed. Not kinda healed. But healed. And I agree that healing takes place in layers but that does not negate the full redemptive restoration accomplished on the cross that is available to us today and every day. Don't get me wrong, I think labels are important when it comes to identifying a problem. Labels help to establish a starting point to work from. Once a problem is identified it helps with taking responsibility for the changes you need to initiate. What does taking responsibility do? It moves you from the victim mentality (another label) to victor, a much better adjective. Do relapses happen? Sure. Rose Ann and I talk about that aspect of breaking any type of addiction. Relapse is part of being healed in layers. If you struggle with or have struggled with addiction, it will always be a part of your testimony with regard to the journey you went through. However, that doesn't mean that you're tied to that label or this world's value system. If there's one thing (among many) that a personal relationship with Christ gives you it's living above the chaos and limited understanding of this world. What I'm getting at is, at some point there comes a time when you leave behind the words alcoholic, recovery and sober. Rose Ann talks about this in more detail. You reach a point where you're reigning in life, free of addiction and in this case alcohol. The recovery process is complete, you're living a life that no longer resembles addiction. With every layer of healing we step into the progressive story of renewal and redemption that Christ is writing over our life. He's writing a much bigger love story with us as the unique person He created us to be. His heart is to help you break free from the grip of this life and step into who He created you to be when He knit you together with His own hands. If you feel like something in your life is out of sync, maybe something has a bigger hold on you than you feel comfortable with/it's nagging you or if you're clear that you struggle with any type of addiction, Rose Ann's personal transformation will give your heart encouragement to know that freedom is possible. In this episode, I had a lively chat with Jen Uschold about the connections between the mind and the body and how trauma healing must include both for healing to be possible. Jen Uschold (DeLorenzo) grew up outside of Buffalo, NY and has been a PT for over 3 decades. Out of her love for PT and helping others to empower themselves, she was drawn to both pain science and health coaching. She is proud to have been in the first cohort passing the exam to become a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach in 2017. She has completed extensive training studying persistent pain including a Fellowship in Pain Science with Evidence in Motion. Jen is an eager learner and has also studied Lifestyle Medicine and most recently has become a Positive Intelligence Coach for Mental Fitness. Jen went through a challenging divorce. In that process, she realized how to integrate her decades of learning to show up grounded, calm, and confident for divorce mediation. And these strategies can help anyone navigating challenging circumstances or transitions. Her three favorite people are Adrianna, J, and Dean- her three kids. As the saying goes, laughter is good medicine and Jen wholeheartedly agrees. Rose Ann was a successful C-Suite executive and ministry leader in the church. She was a working mom of four and a social drinker. Over the years, life's stresses and a difficult marriage created an environment where her alcohol usage increased significantly. After the collapse of her marriage, her drinking further escalated and she felt like a fraud with God and the Church. AA was not an option in her mind. She had already submitted to God and didn't want to call herself an alcoholic. When COVID-19 hit, she enrolled in a coaching program to put alcohol to the side for three months. Her experience was extremely transformational, and she recognized God's instruction embedded in the entire process. She became free of the psychological slavery of this habit through this process. She identified what alcohol had stolen from her life and understood that God had a better plan for her. Rose Ann felt called to document what she learned with a daily devotional so others can experience God's promises through scriptural instruction with hope and a better plan for the future. Rose Ann is an Alcohol-Free Coach, a Positive Intelligence Coach and Best-Selling author of a book called The Plans He Has For Me, A 12-week Daily Devotional for Freedom From Alcohol. She fights for JEDI in two key ways: First, she helps Asian diaspora women find freedom by transforming instead of conforming. She's experienced this first hand, because she's one of them! She's a Hong Kong-born, Canadian- raised, cis-gendered single woman who's spent her whole life trying to meet other people's standards instead of figuring out what she wants. She was liberated by mindset change and positive psychology, and now she offers culturally relevant coaching to help racialized women find theirs. Second, she helps organizational leaders who genuinely want their workplace to be more equitable and inclusive to understand how capitalism and Western business intersect with colonization, racism, and social injustice. We cannot train our way to equity and inclusion; it requires dismantling systems and designing new processes. It also requires costly personal change that will feel sacrificial because equity and inclusion are not part of business today. Darlene and Emily, United States Naval Academy graduates, discuss how they've benefited from strengthening their mental fitness. Mental Fitness or (PQ) is a measure of the strength of your positive mental muscles (Sage) versus the negative (Saboteur). This measure of your Mental Fitness is called PQ (Positive Intelligence Quotient). Shirzad Chamine founded this Program. And research with over 500,000 participants has shown PQ to be the best predictor of how happy you are and how well you perform relative to your potential. Consider this. If you're not physically fit, you'd feel physical stress as you climb a steep hill. If you're not mentally fit, you'd feel mental stress, such as anxiety, frustration, or unhappiness, as you handle work and relationship challenges. Per Shirzad's research, 80% of people score below the minimum level of mental fitness required for peak performance and happiness. With recent breakthroughs in neuroscience and technology, you can improve your mental fitness significantly within 7 weeks of practice. The results? Dramatically improved performance and productivity and a calm, clear, and happier mind. Who doesn't want those results? Emily is a Positive Intelligence Coach. “Your loss is not a test, a lesson, something to handle, a gift, or a blessing. Loss is simply what happens to you in life. Meaning is what you make happen.” ~ David Kessler Guest Introduction: Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. I'm your host Cindy MacMillan I help midlife women navigate the seasons of their life and stop waiting for permission to live the life they want. Thank you so much for being here, friend. Do you ever feel like you are waiting on a permission slip to live the life you want? If you answered yes, then you are in the right place. Each week I interview coaches and spiritual explorers, from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in between. Self-love, well-being and mindset are at the heart of our conversations. Because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well. Before I introduce my guest today, I wanted to let you know I am planning a workshop in December called Your Next Season Re-Imagined. Go out to my website CynthiaMacMillan.com and sign up for my newsletter Exploring SoL. Be the first to know when it's announced. I am delighted to introduce my guest. Nesreen Ahmed is the Founder and CEO, of Harbor Light Coaching and is a Professional Certified Coach, specializing in grief and loss. She's recently completed two major trainings to become certified as a Positive Intelligence Coach and a Grief Educator. Nesreen's coaching is focused on helping clients address their mindset, overcome the hurdles of grief, and find stability and peace amidst any major life change. She lives in New York City with her husband, her beautiful 1 and a half year old daughter and 10-year-old dog. She loves taking road trips, hiking, going to the beach, boxing and yoga. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: Hi, Nesreen. Thanks so much for joining me today. 3:43 And we forget that there are ups and downs, there are cycles, there are seasons, and to allow for those within our everyday life. 4:37 But without those seasons, it feels a little jarring, doesn't it? 14:44 We're not taught on how to hold space for people. We're not taught on how to witness and be there for someone without trying to make them feel better or to fix how they're feeling or, you know, talk about ourselves instead, and maybe something we've gone through, which then takes the attention off them you know, So I think it's so important to have these safe containers, the safe spaces to be able to come and have very frank conversations. 18:14 I'll use the loss of a spouse. I think that's a really easy way to kind of demonstrate. So, when you lose your spouse, not only do you lose your person, right, you might also lose your co parent, you might also lose financial stability, if that person was bringing in most of the income or all the income, you might also lose some of your couple friends that were you know, friends with both of you, right? You might also lose your intimate partner. So, there's so many different losses that you go through when you lose one person. 24:15 The first is just to be willing to listen, to be there, you know, to be that safe space without trying to fix her without trying to tell her, you know why she shouldn't feel bad or how you're lost when you lost somebody, it was this and that, right, but just really being there for her and willing to listen. 27:05 You know, I think of the very basic foundation of self-care as getting enough movement or activity, eating well, and sleep, I think those are like the very basic foundational, please try to at least do these, if you're in grief. And sometimes, that's all you can do. YOU CAN FIND AT: Website Instagram Facebook If you LOVED this conversation with Nesreen Ahmed you'll also love the conversations we had with: Redefining Death with Jessica Wertz Finding Your Inner Peace with Lydia Knoor Let's get Vulnerable with Kayleen Johnson Self-care and Showing up in our Lives with Gina Bell Thanks for listening! Manbir Kaur’s first job after graduating from a prominent university in India was in banking, yet her degree was in computer applications. She felt wholly unqualified at first. And, she was starting out at 19. Manbir credits her father’s influence as he was an action-oriented, focused, hard-working, very positive, optimistic person who encouraged her to “grab the job and make your career”. He was also in banking. So, Manbir dove right in from day zero as she put it, ”Age was on my side, spirit was on my side. The hard-working attitude was on my side.
