Today on the Online for Authors podcast, special guest host Carol Pearson is flipping the script and interviewing me, Teri M Brown, author of the book 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure.   Carol Pearson is the founder of indie publishing house 10 Little Rules, creating books filled with personal narrative and guided journaling inspiration. The books are written by a growing community of authentic and inspiring authors who share their stories to empower others and share their wisdom. At 10LRs we believe in the unbreakable connection between all of us, and relish those "me too" moments that lead to insights and powerful change.   As an author of character-driven fiction, my goal is to introduce readers to characters they'd love to invite to lunch. I do this through my writing (Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, An Enemy Like Me, Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, and 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure), through my book reviews on my blog (www.terimbrown.com/blog), and through my podcasting as host of this show.   In addition to telling a great story, I want those who read or hear my words to contemplate difficult aspects of life such as racism, xenophobia, fear of change, family dynamics, loss, and war. My TEDx talk relates my experiences with racism (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxYidJsL_Wc), while my books always tackle hard topics.   In their book review, the Book Commentary stated that 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure by Teri M Brown is a wonderful exploration of personal growth, transformation, and the quest for adventure. The book is an inspiring guide wrapped around the author's journey of cycling across the United States on a tandem bike with her husband, Bruce. Through this adventure, Brown discovers new geographical locations and insights about herself, her relationships, and life at large. She shares those insights in this life-transforming book! The book's central message is about embracing life's challenges and uncertainties to foster personal growth and healing. Brown emphasizes that everyone can achieve extraordinary feats, regardless of age or circumstances, if they break it into manageable segments and stay focused. Her tale is not just about the physical act of cycling but signifies a mental and emotional metamorphosis that empowers her to redefine her potential.    Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Guest-Host Carol Pearson Website: https://10littlerules.com/ FB:@10 Little Rules IG: @10littlerules LinkedIn: @10 Little Rules   Purchase 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure on Amazon: https://10littlerules.com/   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   #terimbrown.com #10littlerules #doublebuttedadventure #memoir #inspirational #selfhelp #guidedjournaling #terimbrownauthor #authorpodcast #onlineforauthors #characterdriven #researchjunkie #awardwinningauthor #podcasthost #podcast #readerpodcast #bookpodcast #writerpodcast #author #books #goodreads #bookclub #fiction #writer #bookreview *As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

In this episode Ariel is joined by Christine Mullaney about courage, opening up, changing, trusting, and self discovery. KEY TAKEAWAYS My journey with courage started when I was very young, but it became a key theme in my life at 17 when I had my first shamanic experience to cure a recurring problem with my throat. I met my first spirit guide, a wolf, who came to me for courage. But I'd say I've had to be courageous for much of my life, I've had a variety of experiences some of which have tried to knock me down or back. My TEDx talk came 6 months after leaving a narcissistically abusive relationship I'd been in for around 6 years. I in no way put all of what happened on him, he had his own life experience and was who he was because of his life experiences and I certainly didn't behave in ways that necessarily helped it. That's been my most recent healing journey. Part of coming back was the recognition that I had been a very strong, very confident, very open woman before that relationship and she wasn't gone, she'd just gone a different route before meandering back to the road that she wanted to be on. It's a spiral: We experience these things in life and we move through the spiral and each time we come out at a higher level of frequency. Maybe we need to repeat things again, each of my last three relationships had similar patterns – different kinds of addictive substances, abuse in some sort of form, but all centring back into the lived experience I had as a child. But, each time I came out of these relationships at a higher level of frequency, until l got to the point where I realised I could leave that spiral. I wanted to pitch the ripple effect of vulnerability to everybody through my TEDx talk because when we share our stories we create a ripple effect that helps other people have the courage to share theirs. BEST MOMENTS“I can choose to let life knock me down, and knock me back, and keep me where I am, or I can say ‘I'm going to face this, step forwards and through it, and come out the other side however I come out'.”“It's important to share your story, to be able to stand in your own power with respect to those around you and share from your truth.”“People talk about ‘the comfort zone', for me it's not really a comfort zone, it's a place where we're used to things happening and that's our normality.”“The meaning of courage is ‘heart', that's the etymology of it.” ABOUT THE GUESTChristine Mullaney is a nature-loving wanderer and adventurer by weekend and brain-based communication, public speaking and presentation skills coach on weekdays.  Her life task is to empower and enlighten through education. I spoke with Raj Subrameyer over the phone on May 2, 2022 and we had a blast. Raj dedication is to help people and he does a great job. Raj Subrameyer is a Tech Career strategist focusing on helping people to land their dream job and become successful leaders. He is passionate about guiding professionals to maximize their opportunities and discover their zone of genius. He has given multiple TEDx talks and is a sought-after speaker at various conferences and has been featured in numerous TV news segments, podcasts and publications, including CBS, FOX, NPR, NBC, Entrepreneur, CIO Magazine, CEOWorld Magazine, Authority Magazine, Career Addict, Thrive Global, Addicted2Success and The Good Men Project. His areas of expertise include career advancement, leadership, motivation, productivity and entrepreneurship. In his spare time, he loves traveling and enjoying craft beer. Raj grew up as a shy, introverted kid in a conservative family. His entire life, he was told he was not good enough, it did not matter, he suffered through severe anxiety, fear of rejection, low self-esteem, high self-doubt, and severe body image issues. After 20 years of false identity he decided to take control of his life because of a trigger event. Since then, he have transformed his life into an international keynote speaker, author, and tech career strategist, building a six-figure business. He have helped numerous other people discover their zone of genius, find their dream job, launch their businesses and become successful leaders. Raj spent the last 5 years, building his business from the ground up. He had to do various pivots to build his business into a six-figure company. This included writing a book during the pandemic, moving from a IT training business to a coaching business, focusing on one important theme every quarter, staying true to his purpose and saying no to to things which do not align with his vision. Raj have spent the past 8 out of my 15 years in tech helping others understand that people are not born as Toxic Leaders but that our environments shape who we are. He lived that world being toxic and thinking he was the good guy. Later he realized there was no such thing as the ‘good' or ‘bad' guy, but that there was only one guy and we are all both. We all have dormant insecurities. They are triggered when there is a high state of stress and that leads to toxic leadership. Once he started studying and analyzing his own toxic traits, he was able to come out of it. And now, he helps other successful leaders in tech do the same. Raj have written over 100+ articles for various publications, he have been on over 50+ podcasts, and spoken at over 100+ conferences, and also the author of the new book “Skyrocket Your Career” which hit #5 on the best-seller list when it was initially released in 2020. I was sitting at my dining room table it was dark and I was still in my pajamas. From the night before. I hadn't washed my face although I had taken the dog out – in my pajamas. Get fitness customers by learning to tell stories. Everyone loves a story. Yet, few people use storytelling for a positive impact in their marketing. Instead we broadcast information as if we're World Health Organization or National Institute of Health. Most fitness pros go on and on about the benefits of exercise and the features of our services, or worse, the certifications and qualifications of your staff. As if… no one else can say the same thing. But of course, they can. You don't have the edge on Pilates, or strength training, or functional training, or whatever your favorite mode of exercise is. You didn't invent it. But no one can tell your story. There's one thing to remember about a good story though. Make it about them. When you start telling stories you can connect with people and get fitness customers. In a way you can't unless you tell stories.   Stories become the why you. But it's not comfortable. It's vulnerable, its transparent and you may resist it or have in the past. I spent a weekend with a business once, interviewing key managers. We told their stories about why they were doing what they were doing and not… teachers or plumbers. We told why it meant something to them personally. We told about how their personal life or family members become a part of every conversation with a customer. We put together these video clips to get fitness customers easier, more authentically, and to humanize a business. But the General Manager never implemented them. It wasn't comfortable. It was new. Right now? It is exactly stories like that which will take you from being a business or personal trainer, to being the friend and the guide who will help too. So how do you tell stories that get fitness customers? Follow a few key tips below to start telling your own story. I'd suggest writing it out or speaking your story and transcribing it with Otter.ia (I've mentioned it in prior episodes). Once you have your story, you want to pick the point. What's the point that story illustrates. Whether it's funny, sad… matters. For instance, a sad story will get attention more than a happy one. Think about Sarah McLachlin's sad dog commercials. They get donations. But, you can't use them all the time. When you've got your full story down. Leave out the parts people already know- from Stephen Spielberg. Drop into the middle of a story. Grab them. I could barely see the interstate through my tears. The reason I was leaving was calling me on the phone telling me he wished I wasn't leaving. Let me go. Let me go or hold on tighter. The front and back seats were full of computers, blenders, client files, and my bike was on my carrier. So, that's what it had come down to when I needed to pack. I'd left a house full of non-essentials sitting in the middle of each room in my 4200 square foot house to live with these essentials for however long it took to sell my house. My TEDx talk for instance was a string of stories that let you (and me as I was telling it) be in the moment. You want your listener to see themselves in the story. So, imagine under the pressure of relaying a very important big idea in under 15 minutes, if you're going to tell at least 5 stories? Whether you are doing a 3 minute video, you're writing a 800 word blog, or you're talking on the radio, you want to tell a story. You've got stories. No one else has them. It's a simple and easy way to get fitness customers who you will love working with and will love you back. If you need help…. Today through Friday I'm offering the Fast Flip business coaching to help you nail your message. It's 12 weeks of accountability calls. But Saturday it's over. If you need to get into action, your message or the actions you are taking are not working, take advantage of this special offer. Link in the show notes will be removed when I'm full or it's over.

How long will we hold the heavy bags of our past and allow them to keep us in the valley? "I am the single approver of me and I trust myself completely!" Let's let that sink in for a moment. We are shifting and shaking in this episode to get each of up and moving toward the greatesness that awaits. Hormone Balancing Exercise Research | Lessons learned in 8 years

Hormone balancing exercise has consumed me for 8 years. The 29 before that I was laying a foundation and didn’t even realize it. One of my top values is learning and another teaching. It’s been a privilege and pleasure to learn and teach so much to help so many. Today I’m reading to you from You Still Got It, Girl! I look forward to years more with you! Preface from You Still Got It, Girl! If you’re tired of the weight-loss weight-gain roller coaster, overwhelmed with diet and exercise advice and you want to avoid menopause weight gain or find a solution to low energy, high stress, stubborn pounds, and implement a smarter complete action plan that works and lasts, you’re holding that action plan in your hands right now. How many of these problems can you identify with? “It’s doesn’t matter if I eat “good” or “bad” nothing seems to change.” “I’m putting weight on in places I never had problems before.” “I know I need to exercise I just don’t know what to do … and I don’t want to get hurt.” “Every trainer or nutritionist I see gives me different advice –who do I believe?” “When I couldn’t lose weight my trainer said, well, you’re getting old.” “I’m willing to do it, it if I knew what it is!” This book will be different in two ways. First, the book brings together seven essential areas that science knows can no longer be addressed in isolation. Wonderful resource books exist for weight training, cardio, diet, sleep, stress, and hormones. Yet, none of the existing titles help you understand the integration of these pieces so you can create a whole-person fitness plan. It's Not Your Mama's Diet Book Second, the book will be unique from other diet or exercise books in the way it is written and formatted. It features easy-to-read type, short paragraphs and quick-read lists and sidebars so you can absorb the information quickly. Each chapter features a different contributing expert, or case studies and success stories. You don’t have to read this book front to back. You can take the a-stressment at the beginning of the book and then jump to the chapter you need most. Dump your thoughts of January Resolutions when you’ve tried and failed to change everything at once. There is one thing that will have the greatest impact on your success. That’s where you should begin. Filled with stories The book is written in a conversational style with insightful anecdotes, checklists and self-assessment forms. Don’t let the amount of research cited scare you. This is a blend of science and boomer-to-boomer over-the-fence conversation.  Imagine you and I having a glass of wine or cup of tea while you read. We’re going to talk about cortisol as if she’s not even in the room.  She’s not your diva. Research on aging and every topic included in this book is exploding. My inbox is groaning. We’ve learned more in the last five years than in the last 30. Researchers and fitness professionals are aging too. We want answers as much as you do. Hormone balancing exercise logic Logic will have you nodding in agreement to new information. Habit gravity will have you pushing the same speed and incline on the treadmill as yesterday. This book provides interactive components to help you change your actions to change your results. What a waste if you only read this book and don’t know what to do. I’ve written this book as if you are my coaching client and we’re about change. That said; you’re an expert. I am going to encourage you to start listening to your body again. Women in particular have accepted symptoms and signs something is wrong as normal. The book focuses on reaching solutions naturally by defining “right” in each area. When in doubt I encourage you to visit your local hormonitarian. Assess: don’t guess. The problem with some of the things we want to test is nothing will show until you’ve got 90% damage. Trust your gut. No pun intended. Overnight Success There’s a Steve Jobs quote that makes regular rounds on social media. When you look closely, most overnight successes were years in the making. Reality is, the fatologue of belly bulge, bat wings, and kankles you’re gathering didn’t arrive by FedEx. It too was years in the making. What we learned and became our habits in the last 30 or more years doesn’t work any more. It never did. We were just too young, and too busy to notice or to do anything about it. We just bought a bigger sweater, more elastic waistbands and carpooled and climbed the ladder onward. Chances are if you’re reading this you’re not just frustrated with overweight or extra pounds. You suffer from infobesity. This book will help you spot seductive cover headlines that blindside you when you’re vulnerable and show you to what really works. It's Conversational Grammar is not always followed, on purpose. You’ll find a vocabulary unique to fatpedia for females. This is intended to be informal and more useful than proper. I hope if you’re a stickler for grammar you’ll forgive me. Someone suggested I write this like I’m talking to a friend. I did. I don’t let her off the hook too often. I’m kind of a pain like that. If she’s crazy-making with excuses or sabotaging herself it’s bad enough if she believes it. I don’t get in there with her. You too are going to get the science, and the support, along with unbiased truth and tough love. If you’re ready to put yourself first and put old ideas aside, you can feel better in your second fifty than you’ve ever felt in your life. Resources: You Still Got It, Girl! 5 Cool Exercise Answers to Hot Menopause Symptoms

If you’re stuck in this 10 (or more) pound weight gain, you exercise to the point of exhaustion, you’re awake with hot flashes, and baffled about what to put in your mouth right now, this is for you. If any one of those resonated with you or you’re experiencing belly fat and cellulite you’ve never had before… or it’s libido tanking… then keep listening. But if you are sailing smoothly through with no real complaints, I encourage you to stay tuned too. Whether it’s to support other women around you who inevitably will have problems, or that there may be a bumpy road ahead for you no matter where you are in the menopause or post menopause journey you are, you can arm yourself with the tools to exercise smarter, better, and feel your best. These Cool Exercise Answers to menopause Symptoms I cover in this episode: Menopause Symptoms #1 Belly fat  The exercise answers to this are on both ends of an intensity continuum. You’ll have to answer some questions for yourself. Are you exhausted, waking up either without energy OR waking up with energy but an hour later feel as you could take a nap? In that case the answer is to seriously back off of your intense exercise. This is a “restore before more” situation. Once you’re better and you’ve got energy all day, wake up feeling refreshed, then the best belly fat blast is High Intensity Interval Training. Menopause Symptoms #2 Hot Flashes  Intense exercise… don’t fool yourself into thinking a jog or a walk or barre classes, even weight training you do that doesn’t reach muscular fatigue will help. Too many women are quick to say, “It hasn’t helped me at all,” when the real issue is that their exercise is not of adequate intensity. It’s all over the literature in dozens of studies. Light to moderate exercise you’ve been fooled into thinking will get you results, will not. Menopause Symptoms #3 Low Energy/Fatigue – If you are sluggish, slow starting, slow in the afternoon, ready for bed early, never wake rested, the exercise answer is not to try to generate energy. Not yet anyway. I’ve said it for years and you’ve heard it: energy creates energy. That’s true but not potentially for you during menopause until you restore. So short and frequent low intensity exercise daily – as in a few times a day is best to start. You can begin to do more intense short sessions – I’m talking 10 minutes as you begin to feel stronger. This one -as most do – requires additional work on your nutrition – in this case if its adrenals you want to also have small snacks through the day – which is opposite of the no-snacking rule  you want to follow if you want to lose weight and fat. My TEDx talk makes this so very clear as I share my own story and that of two clients. Watch here: https://www.flippingfifty.com/TEDx Which brings me to… Menopause Symptoms #4 Weight & fat loss resistance   You’ve gained it and you can’t get rid of it. Of all menopause symptoms this one is probably most common. It’s moved in, taken up residence, and you can’t move it. What you used to do doesn’t work anymore. I’m going to repeat myself a little here. Because if you’re exhausted, you have to take care of that first. If what you’re doing isn’t helping even a little bit, that’s your body messaging that more is definitely not going to work. It’s crazy in fact to think that no results when you do a little will suddenly start giving results if you do more. You may need to back off, reduce your overall stress load first. You may need to get less overall volume of exercise and get the intensity up. How do you know which it is? It becomes very clear based on what’s happening for you and what have you been doing, consistently, during the last 4-8 weeks.  It’s something that for private clients we identify in minutes. You’ve got to be strength training. If you’ve believed for decades cardio burns more fat, you’ve been duped. It does not. As you lose muscle during aging unless you’re resistance training, you allow your metabolism to slow. That’s not a natural adaptation of aging that has to occur. It just will if you don’t do anything about it. Your muscles are going to age. But they don’t have to atrophy. Menopause Symptoms # 5 Sleep loss – Sleep loss of all menopause symptoms is most detrimental because it will lead to weight gain or low energy. It may be due to hot flashes or night sweats but often it’s not as easy as that. It’s a monkey mind that won’t shut off after you wake in the middle of the night to pee. It’s waking too early. Number one on the checklist for improving sleep with exercise is making sure you’re doing any exercise! Ten minutes a day improved self-reports of sleep quality by 33% in one poll by the National Sleep Foundation. Then make sure you’re following the “intense early and light late” tenant of Flipping 50. It has to do with cortisol levels early in the day up and late in the day down. The right exercise at the right time will help you do that. Late day exercise that’s too intense disrupts that lower cortisol level you want so that you can get to sleep. Take one step right now. 298: Is polluting child abuse?

Leadership and the Environment

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 4, 2020 13:36

[EDIT: moments after posting this episode, I found my first example of someone else posting on this idea only two months ago, Environmental Pollution: An Invisible Kind of Child Abuse, which got a positive response. I'm sure there's more.]After my third TEDx talk a few days ago, spoke to a couple that told me how much they reduced waste but wouldn't consider anything more. People love considering the biggest things immune from consideration, like flying or heating their homes to 70 degrees in the winter and cooling them to 60 in the summer, leaving the air conditioner on while they're out just so it's cool for thirty seconds when they get home. Or getting take out when they have vegetables in the fridge, most of which they throw out in a disgusting display of entitlement. My TEDx talk is about how after you act you'll be glad you did and wish you had earlier.I say people don't want to do small things, they want to do meaningful things and that when you act on something you care about, you may start small you may start big, but since you like it you'll do more, so as long as you keep working on things you find meaningful, big is inevitable. They said they loved my talk but he said, “I don't see how I can live my life without flying.”Actually, people keep asking me, what can I do. Everyone knows polluting behavior of theirs, from bottles and take out containers to vacations beyond the imagination of emperors before that they consider entitled to, to eating unhealthy amounts of meat and food flown around the world while local food they don't even consider buying while local farmers go out of business. The experiential, active learning educator in me wants to say, figure it out come back to me, and you tell me. It's not like millions of web pages aren't telling you. You can change plenty, most improvements as you cut out eating junk and other pure life improvements, before you have to challenge yourself. Generations ago nobody threw anything away. Now I have to help pay billions of dollars a year just to haul junk nobody wanted out of the city to landfills.Changing your life is the point! You're addicted to flying. It pollutes. If you want to change the outcome, you have to change the cause: your beliefs and behavior. My point is that you'll be glad you changed and no matter when you do you'll wish you had earlier. Nobody believes me. Well, you're not abstractly hurting people. You're hurting people and generations will suffer for your jaunt to Macchu Piccu. You have to change your life if it relies on behavior that hurts billions of people. No amount of dreaming for some deus ex machina invention like a plane that runs on rainbows will change that you're paying to pollute now. We have to change our behavior. Even if you think governments should change or corporations should change, every one living unsustainably will have to change too. You can't keep living the way generations of scientists have said will create the results we're already seeing and that we've seen nothing compared to what will come.So much I've said before. You're hurting future generations who are helpless to defend themselves.I started wondering, how different is neglecting to try to live sustainably from child abuse.First, not physically in the moment assaulting someone. But the similarities are strong. I wonder if there's something to this angle. For one thing, I'm not a parent so imagine some would react strongly, however accurate.Asked friends their thoughts. They surprisingly easily agreed. One pointed out how much people will defend themselves. If they don't stop, they'll rationalize why what they do is good and reinforce doing what they've done, filing the claim under groundless attack.I suggested targeting the message at children, who don't need to fly for work. For them to call out what older people are doing to most of their lives.A friend suggested changing beliefs so much might not be possible.I pointed out how we changed drunk driving from something sometimes okay to tantamount to murder. In my lifetime, you could say, “one drink calms me down. I drive better that way.”Or cigarettes. My high school principal smoked a pipe in the school building. Now people would view doing so as giving children cancer and addictions. My friend also suggested creating an alternative. An alternative to smoking is not smoking. For drinking and driving, we created designated drivers and programs to get rides home. If we don't create alternatives, people may feel they can't act, resulting in reinforcing beliefs that sustain polluting behavior, like that they can't do anything about it, which is a lie, I'll comment on now. There's plenty of low-hanging fruit in the form of leisure travel, especially in the US where you don't need to fly but there's beautiful land everywhere. A friend and I rode bikes from Philadelphia to Maine and back when we were 16 years old. The less fit someone is to do it, the more they'll benefit. Most people are near a coast with a beach. Most business travel is low hanging fruit easily cut in favor of not meeting or meeting by video.Anyway, the big difference, why this idea sticks with me not as shrill yelling or name-calling is that nobody suggests stopping child abuse by taxing it or raising its cost a few percent as a way to deter it. If a helpless child receives a black eye from a parent or is emaciated, we have decided as a culture that justice can go as far as taking a parent's child away, possibly the greatest execution of justice short of execution. And we consider it appropriate. We do almost anything to protect a child from harm. How about no future for billions of children facing starvation, disease, wars over resources, billions of climate refugees, and so on?How about an adult that takes pleasure in abusing the child? Do you also feel another level of revulsion? How about adults that fly first class to Acapulco, or India to pick a place nearly half way around the world, many for some meditation retreat or to see something they consider exotic? I take a bus to a meditation retreat. So can they, but they prefer to get their pleasure with tens of tons of CO2, maintaining a military to maintain the supply lines, destroy communities with the misfortune to live over the fossil fuel extraction site, and destroy the land and see there too.Should we add animal abuse? This recording is my first publicly sharing the idea, so it may need refinement. Maybe it needs rejection. I'm not proposing adopting it, but considering it. I wasn't abused. Would someone abused feel hurt or empowered? How would that feeling change as disasters accumulated? Might it not be strong enough?I also think they people who would share it would be children. I fear for my future and many of them face 40 years more of what scientists have predicted for generations and the adults who could have acted didn't. How justified or not would you consider children facing most of a life of a hellscape not of their making? How bad would it be for children to levy the charge at adults? Might it lead to fast change? When I hear an adult say they love how younger people are taking responsibility, I hear an adult trying to shirk responsibility—tragically a responsibility that he or she would consider improving his or her life to change. Well, how about when they children point out what you're doing?Could we move from merely taxing and making slightly more expensive to making many behaviors illegal, maybe with penalties on the scale of penalties we give child abusers? How is heating the planet, poisoning its air and water, using up nonrenewable resources, and not trying to change not abusing children—billions of children? What do you think of the perspective? If you see problems, can you think of ways to improve it? That is, if it did work and help, what would have had to change from what I shared to what worked well?I wonder if anyone has pursued this view before. I haven't heard it regarding the environment, though smoking and drunk driving campaigns seem to have sounded similar. How about a social media campaign showing pictures of people polluting with a hashtag #childabuse? You are a Princess, a daughter of the King of the entire Universe. And so am I. When I made this very statement during my baptism in front of a few thousand people, many people came to talk to me about it. Read my My Testimony here.    The next time I said it at church, women laughed. But I asked: “Do you believe that God is the Sovereign King He says He is?” And the ladies said yes. I asked: “Do you believe that God created you and He is your Heavenly father?” The women said yes. Ok, Princess. They agreed. There are 52 great things you can tell yourself in a form of Biblical affirmations because they are what God says about you. How do I know? How I Know the answers to the question "Who Am I In Christ?" I searched the answer to the same question while struggling with severe depression and suicidal thoughts during my divorce with the husband who abandoned me after 4 months of marriage.  I know what it feels like to think you don't even matter, that no one cares, and that you are unloved. I couldn't stand my self-destructive thoughts about my life anymore, so I searched the Bible to answer that one burning question I had: “Who does God say I am?” My Biblical Discoveries about who I am in Christ Below is a list of 52 amazing, freeing, liberating “I am” statements I want you to memorize to help you battle that negative self-talk next time it attacks you. I divided these Biblical affirmations into 4 groups on purpose. The “Fundamentals of God's Grace” group is about the foundational truth about Jesus, Cross, and Salvation. The “New Identity in Jesus” group is about being a child of God and a new creation, beautifully made in the image of God. The “Christ-Like Character Qualities” group is about having the discernment from the Holy Spirit, being confident and wise. The “Biblical Outlook on Life” group is about our hope for the future. James 1:22 says “be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” What it means to me and you is that we must first seek to understand what God says about us, but then we must remember His word and we must practice His view of us, every single day. Are you in? If so, memorize the following Biblical affirmations. Who Does God Say I Am? Think of how Patagonia can charge a premium.Context: most companies hear demand from customers, employees, shareholders, and media to be more sustainable.Almost necessary for top talent. Patagonia doesn't have to advertise new positions. Exxon has to pay top dollarJust today I talked to a guy who runs a business Exxon wanted to hire. He quoted them a high price because he didn't want to work withthem.Action usually comes from junior employees. They're younger and face more of their lives with potential catastrophe and they've investedless in old waysEasy to think senior decision-makers can just change, after all everything points to actingDecision-makers are often most vulnerableWe've all heard people and organizations called greenwashing and hypocriticalHowever well-meaning, accusations make choice for executives easier not to act and risk losing job or company value, even if they want toactThey think they have to be perfect, an impossibly high barThey only have to show they are doing their best, a lower bar, but they have to show they are doing it genuinely and authentically. I enable this, as you can hear from the conversations with the executives I mentionedFor example, Yvon Chouinard of Patagonia behaves far from perfectly, but he hides nothing. As a result, people support him for his flawsinstead of attack, because they see themselves in himIf you act without sharing yourself, people judge your actions against perfection. If you share yourself---that's what leaders do, they allow themselves to be vulnerable---then they support youI've refined my technique over hundreds of projects with executives and leaders in business, politics, culture, eduction, military, etcI will describe two parts: the building block, which I describe in more depth in my first TEDx talk, which describes the environmental leadership process with one person. One person won't change a culture, so I'll describe the second part, which uses many building blocks to transform a corporation. The Building BlockThe building block is a 4-step process to ask what people care about, have them create a way to act on it, make it manageable, and add accountability, where they report how it wentIt goes well and they want to share. They know that when they share what they care about people connect with it.If their employees just heard, we're going to use less plastic, well that might mean they're trying to save moneyIf they hear their CEO sharing trying to do his or her best, they see him or her doing what they want to do themselves. By supporting the CEO, they support themselves. So they don't attack, they support.Building corporate culture with the building blockStill the CEO is one person. I do the building block with a team including several executives and a few junior people who will implement the results. We pick an audience to hear the recordings, which could be just the team if they're private, employees if their goal is mainly morale, clients if their goal is sales, the public if PR. The point is someone has to hear for accountability and to motivate depth, but the team chooses for its goals.I do the building block with all ten people (could be half a dozen or a dozen). Most tasks take 2 weeks or a monthI meet with them in a month, ask how it went, how it affected them emotionally, their relationships. They always learn. Then I do the building block again, this time restricting the task to in the office. We meet again after they finish their second task. Now they've collectively done 20 tasks, the second usually bigger and more rewarding than firstThird meeting we meet as group for a half to full day exerciseBased on experience and teamwork, this exercise leads them to create a team exercise based on experience, that the company will implement, usually led by the two junior people who have been part of this engagement from the startI don't know the company. I don't create the project. They do. I'm like a basketball coach. I don't put the ball in the hoop. The experienced people do.I know how to lead individuals and a team to face and overcome the unique challenges of environmental leadership -- feelings of shame, guilt, helplessness, anxiety, futility, and so on.When they bring to company a project, they aren't saying do as I say, not as I do. They're saying: hear my humanity and struggles. I did my best, grew to learn, and am sharing joy and discover with you. Community, connection.ConclusionI'll leave off here for now, but I wanted to share the professional, executive work I'm doing. If corporations and governments aren't involved, we'll get almost nowhere.I want to engage and activate them so they love acting, get competitive advantages, boost morale, attract talent, etc for acting more sustainably. If they don't their competitors will, so why not enjoy it and act first? My TEDx talks See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Two years ago, right before the November 2016 U.S. presidential election, I gave a talk at a small, local TEDxWomen chapter. Until now, I’ve never shared it publicly (beyond the audience that was there). Why? There are several reasons, which you’ll hear about in this episode. It was the most challenging speaking experience I’ve ever had. Not because of the format or the short length (8 minutes), but because of the topic I chose to talk about and the pressure I put on myself. The talk was called “It’s About Time We Really Talk About Women and Power” (the theme of the event was “It’s About Time”). As a society, why are we so ambivalent and uncomfortable about women in power? My TEDx talk examined our deep-rooted fears about women striving for powerful positions, our myths through the ages about powerful women, and how this came to a head in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. In this episode: You’ll hear me give the talk (as I originally wrote it - I was tempted to update it with what’s gone on during the past 2 years, but decided to keep it as is) You’ll learn how I wrote the talk as I deconstruct the structure, pacing, specific elements, and the opening and closing You’ll hear why it was the most challenging talk I’ve given, what I learned, and how you can apply these lessons to your own speaking journey I’d love to hear your thoughts: Have you had a challenging speaking experience? 72: Amy Oestreicher on Being a Detourist, Being More Capable Than We Think, and Taking Risks

Cracking Creativity Podcast with Kevin Chung

Amy Oestreicher thought she had her life all figured out. Ever since she was young, she felt she was born to perform. She was all set to go to college for musical theater when medical complications derailed everything. During her senior year of high school Amy started having stomach pains. When she went into surgery to fix it, her stomach shot out of her body and she went into a coma for months. She spent years and many surgeries in hospitals trying to reach some semblance of normalcy. During this trying time, Amy turned to creativity to help keep her busy. She started painting and she even developed her own one person play based on all of her troubles and overcoming adversity. With one play in the books, and another on the way, Amy is the prime example of what it means to persevere. In this episode, Amy talks about being a detourist, being more capable than we think we are, and how our creativity benefits from taking small risks. Here are three things you can learn from Amy: Become a Detourist As we go through life, we often face obstacles that push us past our comfort zones. We face obstacles that scare us. Amy believes we need to force ourselves to take risks, to push past the comfortable. “Unfortunately I think we all get something that pushes us sooner or later but obviously, to prepare ourselves, I think we have to look for the scary… We have to take the risk. We have to go inside and ask that question… ‘If I could not fail, I would do this.'” Amy believes we need to follow our curiosity. We need to stop feeling so comfortable and safe. We need to embrace the risk even in the face of the unknown. “My TEDx talk was about being a detourist, and for me, a detourist is someone who at least shows up and has this curiosity. I think that’s the best thing we can do with anything in life even if life seems settled and okay. Be curious like what if, ‘What if I went in this alternate direction?’… The truth is, it’s not so hard for adversity to find us but I think sometimes we do feel comfortable and safe. We do have to really go inside and ask ourselves ‘What is a risk I can take in this moment?’ And the truth is if it’s not, even if you’re not in a comfortable place, I say start with a gratitude list. That’s what I tell anyone.” Being a detourist requires knowing yourself. And one of the best ways to get to know yourself is by creating a gratitude list. Your gratitude list will reveal what’s important to you, even if it scares you. “Those gratitude items on my list… were actually my values. And the more I did those lists, the more I realized what was important to me. So the reason I think anyone should start with that is, you’ll realize what’s really important to you and what you need to go for, even if you’ve been scared of it.” We Are More Capable Than We Think One of the things that you might realize over time is that we have the capacity to do great things. Even if you don’t know exactly what you are doing, you can create beautiful results. That’s exactly what Amy did when she got back into acting after all her surgeries. “It’s fake it til you make it. I feel like, just by acting, I was the actress back at work with the director. I felt like my mind was in such a better place.” Don’t let your lack of experience prevent you from doing something you believe in. With the fake it til you make it attitude and the willingness to embark on new adventures you can make the impossible come true. “The truth is, I booked a theater in New York when I still had tubes and bags on me and I had never even touched professional theater after the hospital. So it was a big risk and it was an investment. So I think we were all very nervous cause I had never done anything like this in my sick or healthy life.” Amy did not let her lack of professional experience dissuade her. She did not let the financial risk or her own nervousness get in the way. She went after what she wanted, regardless of the obstacles she faced. That is why we sometimes need to force ourselves into uncomfortable situations. We need to push ourselves to the limits to see what we are truly capable of. “Sometimes you need to light a fire under you to get yourself in gear. You know why I don’t ever feel like a victim is because I think we are always more capable than I think we are or than other people perceive us as. And sometimes it takes saying ‘You know what, I’m going to fail,’ to see that we don’t fail.” How Our Creativity Benefits from Taking Small Risks We often believe risk is a huge commitment or step in our lives that will change our whole perspective on the world, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Even the smallest risks can take you in the right direction. “I like to ask myself ‘What is the smallest micro-movement I could take? If I were an amoeba… what is the tiniest thing I could do?” That’s because risks aren’t an all or nothing proposition. Risks lie on a spectrum. You don’t have to quit your job to take a risk. Risk can be almost anything. “Risk is not an all or nothing thing. There are a spectrum of risks we can take. It doesn’t have to be quit my job and become a performance artist. It could be I’m going to make myself sit and write that opening paragraph I’ve been putting off… and I think that’s what makes it a little bit easier to start with. Not I’m going to paint a canvas. I’m going to take a crayon and draw a stick figure. So, there’s no excuse.” One important lesson we can learn about creativity and risk can be learned from kids. Kids aren’t worried about embarrassing themselves or making mistakes. They embrace it in the name of creativity. “Creativity can feel really superfluous, you know, like why I have this to do or that to do. But kids own it. You see that it’s a priority to them.” If we just allow ourselves to take risks and look at the world from a child’s mind, we can slowly create a world where risk isn’t such a big deal.
