The first episode of season two of "Let's Get Candid" with host Ziggy Fulford and co-host Lori Hall welcomed international vocalist Tess Charles as their guest. Tess Charles, hailing from the Capital Isle of Grand Turk in the Turks & Caicos Islands and with Jamaican and Vincentian heritage, shared her remarkable journey to stardom. Her stage name, TESS, carries a special meaning as it stands for "Tell Someone Something," a phrase popularized by local residents who encouraged sharing information with the police following a tragic incident in 2013. Despite holding a degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management and having a promising career in the hotel industry, Tess felt a calling that she could no longer ignore. After three years of headlining TCI's hottest events and successfully serving as the executive producer of her first Jazz and Soul show in November 2015, TESS made the bold decision to transition into a full-time performer. While she channels the soulful tunes of legends like Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald, TESS draws inspiration from her island influences to create her original music. Her versatility is evident as she delves into Soca and Rip Saw, releasing her self-written track "Daa'n My Business" on the "Grace Bay Riddim," produced by Jovano "Stutters" Robinson, a native of Middle Caicos, TCI. Tess Charles is a multi-talented artist who refuses to be confined to a single genre. She remains dedicated to her love for Jazz and Soul, and she aims to keep the world grooving to her music while introducing them to the distinctive TCI flavor of Rip Saw. This episode of "Let's Get Candid" provided a captivating glimpse into Tess Charles's journey, her resilience, and the power of embracing one's true calling despite the odds. The show also features a special segment called “Whatchu Know about us? Where the host and guest answer random questions about a bowl. No topic is off the table with Let's Get Candid. In this episode we speak with 14 year old Danya Russell. She was recently crowned Miss Teen Grand Turk 2023. We met her by chance after a meeting and she spoke to Gerry saying she liked his Royal Turks and Caicos Golf Shirt. Of course that's all Gerry needed to hear, someone interested in golf, so a conversation began. When we found out how articulate she was and saw a video that she did the voiceover for. We asked her and her mom on the spot if she would join us. Thankfully she did as we can showcase youth leadership in action. Queen Elizabeth the First of England, the Grand Turk at Constantinople, and an organ builder named Thomas Dallam—quite a trio. In 1599, Elizabeth commanded master organ builder Dallam to construct and deliver to the Grand Signieur , as a present intended to garner trade and political advantages for England, a fantastic mechanical organ. Dallam's wonder stood 16 feet high and was topped by a silver holly bush filled with blackbirds and thrushes that sung and shook their wings. Dallam kept a diary during his visit to Turkey, which included a sneak look through a grate at the Grand Turk's concubines in the harem. “I stood so long looking upon them that (the guide) stamped with his foot to make me give over looking; the which I was very loath to do, for that sight did please me wondrous well.” Dallam's ingenuous style and numerous adventures make for a highly enjoyable listen. - Summary by Sue Anderson --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/librivox1/support
Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
In the early sixteenth century there emerged upon the world stage a cast of royal characters that could almost persuade the most hardened social historian to read Thomas Carlyle's On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History. In Europe were Francis I of France, Henry VIII of England, and Charles V, King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor. In Russia ruled Ivan IV, also known as Ivan the Terrible; in India Babur and Akbar, founders of the Moghul Dynasty; and in Persia the Savafid rulers Shah Ismail and Shah Tahmasb. As my guest writes, all of these monarchs “resorted to warfare as an instrument of empire building…sought to establish control over their own elites and aristocracies… paid particular attention to creating and maintaining a multilayered reputation as ruler, patron, soldier, [and] statesman… [and] sought to establish central control over religious matters during a time of intense theological debates and spiritual anxieties. They were also acutely aware of each other, and they openly competed among themselves for control of land and resources and for prestige.” In their geographical midst was one to whom all looked, against whom all compared themselves, and with whom nearly all of them competed in the game of kingdoms. This was Süleyman, the ruler of the Ottoman Empire, known to contemporaries as “the Grand Turk”, and ever after as “the Magnificent.” In all the endeavours of his contemporaries, he at the very least matched them, and he usually excelled. Peerless Among Princes: The Life and Times of Sultan Süleyman is a fascinating new biography of this towering figure, a study not only of his life but of his time. Its author Kaya Şahín is with us today; he is Associate Professor of History at Indiana University, where he also serves in the Department of Central Eurasian Studies and Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures For Further Investigation Some of the European side of this story has previously been discussed in Episode 166, a conversation with Catherine Fletcher about the Italian Renaissance; and in Episode 149, which focused on the history of Eastern Europe, a history that is unimaginable without the presence of the Ottoman Empire. The following books are suggested by Kaya, some with his comments. Cornell H Fleischer, Bureaucrat and Intellectual in the Ottoman Empire: The Historian Mustafa Ali (1541-1600) Leslie Peirce, Empress of the East: How a European Slave Girl Became Queen of the Ottoman Empire: "a biography of Suleyman's wife." John Julius Norwich, Four Princes: Henry VIII, Francis I, Charles V, Suleiman the Magnificent and the Obsessions that Forged Modern Europe: "not a work of academic scholarship, but an open-minded treatment of Suleyman together with the other royal figures of the period." Suleymanname: The Illustrated History of Suleyman the Magnificent, edited by Esin Atil. Erdem Çipa, The Making of Selim: Succession, Legitimacy, and Memory in the Early Modern Ottoman World: "a study on Süleyman's father." Emine Fetvaci, Picturing History at the Ottoman Court: "although mostly dealing with a period following Süleyman's death, it is a terrific study of Ottoman visual culture, book arts, history-writing, etc." Nikolay Antov, The Ottoman 'Wild West': The Balkan Frontier in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries: "a solid treatment of Ottoman expansion in the Balkans as well as the issue of conversion to Islam, etc." Christopher Markiewicz, The Crisis of Kingship in Late Medieval Islam: Persian Emigres and the Making of Ottoman Sovereignty: on new Ottoman notions of sovereignty.

Garry S, Sydney. Listener QuestionGarry asks: I'm thinking this is her first visit to our part of the world which gets me thinking about the commemorative plaques that I've seen on a number of ships(mainly the Princess fleet) which celebrate a ships inaugural visit to a port, some of the plaques are very stylish and yet some rather plain. I'm wondering if Chris could enlighten me on the history of these plaques? Are they a common occurrence to all ships or just specific to cruise ships? Also congratulations to Chris on the success of his YouTube channelSupport the showSupport the Show:Listen, Like, Subscribe & Review on your favourite podcast directory.Share the podcast with someone you think will enjoy the showBuy Me A Coffee – This podcast is only possible thanks to our supporters, simply buying a coffee keeps us on air. MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia will become the first LNG-powered vessels to join the MSC Cruises fleet next year representing an investment of €3 billion in Liquified Natutal Gas (LNG) ships with the construction on World Europa II due to commence in early 2023.These ships play an important role in the Company's commitment to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. LNG is by far the cleanest marine fuel currently available at scale and it virtually eliminates local air pollutant emissions like sulphur oxides (99%), nitrogen oxides (85%) and particles (98%). In terms of emissions with a global impact, LNG plays a key role in climate change mitigation and the engines of these two ships have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 25% compared to standard fuels. In addition, with the subsequent availability of Bio and Synthetic forms of LNG, this energy source will provide a pathway toward eventual decarbonized operations. It was also revealed that MSC Cruises and the Chantiers de l'Atlantique confirmed the installation of a fuel cell pilot plant on board MSC World Europa known as Blue Horizon. The technology will use LNG to convert fuel into electricity at one of the highest efficiencies of any power solution available today, producing electricity and heat on board. The fuel cell technology selected by Chantiers de l'Atlantique (CdA) and MSC Cruises is the SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) developed by Bloom Energy. The SOFC will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) by about a further 30 percent compared with a conventional LNG engine without producing emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides or fine particles. It also offers the advantage of being compatible with LNG, as well as several low carbon fuels such as types of methanol, ammonia and hydrogen. This project will form the building block for future larger installations and the beginning of an even closer collaboration between MSC Cruises and Chantier de L'Atlantique on R&D of fuel cell technology. The traditional coin ceremony tradition took place as the keel was laid for MSC Cruises' second LNG-powered ship, MSC Euribia, which will be one of the most environmentally high performing contemporary vessels built in France. Anne Claire Juventin Responsible for Quality Control from the Chantiers de l'Atlantique, and Valentina Mancini, Brand Manager from MSC Cruises performed the traditional maritime ritual as godmothers representing the ship owner and the shipbuilder when they placed two coins under the keel as the historical sign of blessing and good fortune for the project, and the ship's operational life at sea.The float out of MSC World Europa, which will be the first LNG-powered vessel to join the MSC Cruises fleet took place at the shipyard in Saint-Nazaire where she will now be moved to a wet dock for work to continue on the ship until her delivery in November 2022.NCL Homeports in Panama City Norwegian Cruise Line, will become the first cruise line to homeport in Panama City, Panama, offering roundtrip Panama Canal voyages beginning 20 March 2022 with Norwegian Jewel.NCLK (Parent company of NCL) signed a multi-year agreement with the Panama Tourism Authority which allows the Company to seasonally homeport at the Colon Cruise Terminal as well as at Fuerte Amador Cruise Terminal located on the Pacific Ocean side of the country and adjacent to Panama City.In 2022 and 2023 the Company will offer 12 homeport voyages starting with Norwegian Jewel on 20 March 2022 where she will sail a nine-day itinerary traversing the Panama Canal and visiting incredible destinations including Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curaçao; Kralendijk, Bonaire and Cartagena, Colombia before arriving to the Caribbean side of Panama in the city of Colon.Starting 14 January 2023, Norwegian Gem will also feature select Panama Canal voyages including an 11-day journey visiting seven ports of call, including Puerto Limon, Costa Rica; Oranjestad, Aruba; Willemstad, Curaçao; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos Islands before ending in New York City. It was such a fun experience and since then I've seen it a number of times on various ships and each ship does it in a similar manner.I have noticed that crew members taking part seem to get special attentionWhat I'd like to know is;What is the tradition behind this nautical mayhem? Also if a ship is doing a world cruise does the crossing the line ceremony happen every time she passes the equator?Part of this question was answered in detail in Episode 68 – https://bit.ly/2UD2afjGill from SA asks Chris – what is the algorithm you talk about?Vilma from UK asks Baz – What makes TeeMill (your chosen supplier of podcast merchandise) so good.TeeMill: https://the-big-cruise-podcast.teemill.com/the-journey/ Example of “Buy a Tee, Plant a Tree” promotion:A holistic approach to reforestationThis weekend, we count your orders and fund the planting of trees in your brand's name. Our international tree planting partners work to address reforestation through a mixture of approaches. As well as directly seeding land with native seed species, they also employ methods like creating ‘seed bombs' which contain seeds mixed with clay, compost and soil, ready to plant when the rainy season arrives. After the trees are planted, protecting them is vital. Patrols and guard towers watch for fires and keep the forests from getting cut down illegally or destroyed by natural disasters.34 football pitches of forest plantedTogether, so far, across our tree planting weekends, we've planted enough trees to sequester over 1.7 million kilograms of CO2 from the atmosphere. Trees are the ultimate carbon storage system without requiring any expensive tech, helping to fight climate change. What's more, they also help to cool our air by releasing water through their leaves which then turns into water vapour. The larger the tree, the more carbon it can hold which is why our tree planting partners work hard to protect forests as well as plant them. You can find your own tree planting stats in Analytics and set a Green Friday target for customers to get behind. Posting live updates across the weekend is a great way to keep your community engaged as you move towards your reforestation goal.Guest Lecturer - Tamara Tamara is an 8th generation Australian. This episode of the [... and Landlord] Podcast tells my story of being on a cruise, reading the book Rich Dad / Poor Dad, and finding my first property a few months later, to add... and Landlord - to my other titles of Husband, Father and Entrepreneur (Realtor would come later that same year). It was March / April of 2015 and I was on a 7 day cruise to Bonaire, Grand Turk (and other destinations) with my wife and son (at the time age 7), along with two other couples who are close friends and their 2 young children each (11 people in all). To read, I brought along the book Rich Dad / Poor Dad... It changed my life! Despite having a great time with my family and great friends, this book had me really wanting the cruise to be over sooner than later, so that I could get off the boat and start looking for my first rental property - as the book (along with my prior interest in being a Landlord) had me passionately wanting to do. Finally, I had found something that put into words what I had somehow felt all along - that going to school, getting a job and working for someone else (to make them rich), buying stocks / mutual funds and saving for retirement in a IRA / 401K was NOT going to give me the life (or retirement) that I desired. You see, I had been self-employed by my own Web Hosting business (also offering Domain Names & SSL Certificates) for almost 13 years (since 2002) when I came across this book. And while I first had the mind to do so, I had long since decided that I was not meant for college, instead getting a degree in Electronic Engineering Technology from ITT Tech, as it seemed the cheapest and fastest way of getting a decent job that I would only need for long enough to start my own business and quit. ---------- Read the full blog post on how my Landlord Story began at: https://www.andlandlord.com/blog

Enjoy our holiday tradition this week, A Cruiser's Night Before Christmas. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. ‘Twas the night before the cruise, when all through the house Everyone was packing; have you seen Mom’s blue blouse? The kids’ luggage was set by the back door with care, In hopes that they’d remembered to pack formal wear. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of waterslides danced in their heads. In the morning we got up and got coffee and fraps, And we got to the terminal without needing a map. When we got on the ship we avoided the clatter, We sprang to the buffet to load up a platter. Away to Guy’s Burgers we flew like a flash, Next to the pools of kids making a splash. The sun on the breast of the blue ocean waves Made me think of a drink, which I started to crave. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a goofy British man who was holding a beer. At the site of him, someone beside me yelled, And I knew in a moment it must be John Heald. More rapid than eagles the cruisers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and began to exclaim: “Now Sunshine! now, Glory! now, Pride and Sensation! On, Magic! On, Conquest! on Spirit and Elation! To the Caribbean and to three ports of call; Now cruise away, cruise away, cruise away all!” Some cruisers stood by and waved their goodbyes, As the ship’s horn blew and the sunset in the skies. So up to the lido deck the cruisers they flew, With cameras in hand to capture the view. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the deck The pouring of juice and some orange triple sec. As I signed my receipt and left an extra tip, Up came John Heald to the top of the ship. He was dressed in his swimsuit, ready for the slides, And he looked quite happy, with a pep in his stride. A bag full of sunscreen he had flung on his back, With a Guy’s burger inside, in case he needed a snack. His eyes-how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry! But his chest won the contest for being too hairy! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, For he’d just heard the sketch for the comedy show. As the senior cruise director of the whole Carnival fleet, He would shake the hand of every cruiser he’d meet. He had a broad face and he loved the food at the deli, And in the mornings he room serviced toast with some jelly. He was funny and kind, a right jolly old man, And I laughed when I saw him get a bit too tan. A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know his skin would go red. He spoke not a word, but went back to his work, As he wrote up the Fun Times for our day in Grand Turk. He planned out the bingos, the trivias, the shows, And made sure to list when the ship’s bars would close. He then sprang to the mic, to his team gave a shout, And away they all flew, the crew so devout. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere we sailed out of sight, “Happy cruising to all, and to all a good-night!” -- Thoughts or questions? doug@cruiseradio.net Want daily cruise news? Million dollar blogger, Jeni Hott, travels globally but knew my sister Sarah virtually! I met one of her Mastermind group members on a sun lounger in Grand Caymen and knew I had to interview her. Check this out for the real secret of how to build a million dollar blog. Nicola: Hi, today, I'm joined by Jeni Hott who is considered to be the highest earning blogger in the world. In fact, she's one of the few seven figure bloggers in the industry. She pursues what she calls her extreme passive income strategies, which have allowed Jeni to travel the globe for four years while working only a few times a year, and still earning millions of dollars. Recognized by Google as one of the most widely read bloggers on the web with over 100 million visits and growing, Jeni collaborates with both Google America and Google Latin America for testing and general insights on Ad Sense. Jeni has recently accepted a request to create a blogging course for universities across the US that will also be available for veterans uncovered by the GI Bill. She's a featured entrepreneur in Living Dot Com documentary released summer 2014, which we can highly recommend because we saw it early last weekend. Welcome to the call, Jeni, I really appreciate you joining me today. Jeni: Thank you. It's such a pleasure. Nicola: The funny thing was that I heard of you, and I've been telling this story on the podcast for a while. First, while sitting on a sun lounger in Grand Turk with your friend Margaret and her son Tyler. Jeni: That's right, I heard about that. Such a small world, isn't it? Nicola: Especially when you take the virtual world into account as well. Tell us about Jeni Hott. Where did you grow up, what kind of background do you come from, how did you become an entrepreneur? Jeni: I come from a long line of entrepreneurs. That was something that was instinctive in me. I didn't really like working for other people or for other corporations. I grew up in California, but I went to school on the east coast at Rutgers. I ended up working in the corporate world doing PR, and I just despised it. It was just horrible. You know how the corporate world is. Just not the most liberating industry to be in. Nicola: I've never lasted more than 18 months in a proper grownup job. Jeni: See that? We're not suitable to be employed by others. I ended up working in the typical corporate world where I was in it to achieve a goal. I was working for a boss I just could not stand. She was just a nightmare. She's not a nice person. I saw so many of my friends getting laid off and fired. The politics there was just horrible. So, I just decided to make a change. One day, I just realized, "I've got to do something because this isn't what I want to do. This isn't where I see myself for the rest of my life." One day, I just decided to give my things away, packed up, and moved to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Nicola: Where did you move from? Where had you been living up until that point? Jeni: I was back and forth between New Jersey, from Princeton, to New York. Nicola: Then you went down to, is it New Mexico, did you say? Jeni: No, Mexico. The actual Mexico. To Puerto Vallarta, which is actually paradise. But it was still quite a culture shock. Nicola: Had you been there before? Jeni: I had. I've gone down and visited with my grandmother just a typical vacation and I just fell in love with it. I just thought, wow, this is just such a cool, relaxed place, such a different atmosphere, different environment than New York. Also, too was I loved the qualities that people had there, the values. Such a different thing than I had ever experienced. Everybody was so happy but they had so little. It was just the total opposite of what I was used to. It really resonated with me and I just felt like I wanted to do something different, I wanted to make some changes and I wanted to make sure that I was on a path that I was going to be happy,

I'm joined by Margaret Wright who is chief Flip Chick at FlipChickCoaching.com. Margaret is a speaker, best-selling author, philanthropist, business owner, and one of the most sought after real estate investing consultants. By developing a simple and easy to understand system, laser focused on building generational wealth, she has helped countless individuals learn how they can divorce their day job and never have to live pay-check to pay-check again. She has been profiled and featured on The Wall Street Journal, ABC, NBC, and many more. Margaret Wright, The Flipchick Nicola: Margaret's passion is to help other people realize their full potential. She is the founder of Kyuki-Do Wasi, home for teen moms, and she started the home in Peru in early 2013. I hope we're going to hear all about that because I know you've just been down there, haven't you Margaret? So welcome to the call. Margaret: Thank you. Nicola: It's lovely to talk to you again. The last time I saw you, we were sitting on sun-beds in Grand Turk. Margaret: That's true. That was a good time. Nicola: We discovered rather weirdly, on those sun-beds, through me talking to your son, who is really one of the most delightful people I've met for a long time, that we were both playing Second Life at that time, and that through that we, my sister knows one of your best friends Jenni Hott (also in this book!). Margaret: I know, its a very small, small world. Nicola: It's incredible, isn't it? I still reel with wonderment when I think about that. So I'm talking to your son, he mentions a name I recognize, who is a very successful blogger and internet marketer. I recognize the name because my sister was mentioning to it as being one of her friends in Second Life. Now my sister lives in a tiny town in England, I live in a tiny town in England. Who knows where your friend lives, but there we are meeting complete strangers in Grand Turk, the Cayman Islands. I mean I just find that so weird. Margaret: It is, it is very, very peculiar and I love it. Nicola: I know that you're very successful in your own life because you've just taken your kids to Chile, Peru sorry for an extended period of time, but what I'd like to do know is get to know how Margaret arrived at this point. Tell me all about yourself, starting at the very beginning. Margaret: Well, I guess I could start the beginning with, when I was 18 years-old and I found myself pregnant, but maybe that's not the right way to say it, I clearly had an active role in that happening. It really, aside from the fact that obviously that's a big life changing event, in a lot of people, when they know my circumstances and they know that I was a teen mom, that they think, oh poor Margaret, it must've been so hard. I always saw it as a moment in my life where I was able to shift, and it's really served me very well. I was able to make a shift from it's all about me, to now I can focus on helping somebody else. For me it was just my tiny little baby, but I've really been able to take that principle and apply it to everything that I do. What could've been the most devastating time in my life, I think, and it wasn't easy, by no means was it a piece of cake, I was waitressing in the morning and working full-time and going to school at night, so it was challenging, but it was all for a higher purpose and that was for my son, who you met, who was on the lounge chair.... Listen to the interview to hear how Margaret not only turned her life around and became a successful business person & property investor but now helps other teenage moms in Peru....
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere we sailed out of sight, “Happy cruising to all, and to all a good-night!”
