大众全新一代Passat(B9)和大众途观其次便是全新一代Passat(B9)和大众途观。

The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
Hosted by Chris Beckett & Shane Ludtke, two amateur astronomers in Saskatchewan. A bit of background on our guest: Mark Radice lives near Salisbury Wiltshire, a few miles from the ancient site of Stonehenge. He has been active in Astronomy since watching Comet Hykutake cross the sky while working in Canada in 1996. This sparked off an interest that led him across the moon, through the solar system and out into deep space. Most of his observing is done with a C11 on an EQ6 (a 280mm f10 Schmidt-Cassegrain) and a pair of 100mm APM binoculars from my roll off roof observatory. A 60mm Lunt H-alpha solarscope is also used in the daytime. The Refreshing Views Observatory is in a village a few miles from Salisbury, Wiltshire in the south of England. It is adjacent to a large yew tree that dominates the sky to the south east. It holds a C11 SCT, a 60mm Lunt solar scope and a pair of tripod-mounted 100mm APM binoculars. When I am not using the observatory, I can be found under the dark skies of Salisbury Plain with the Salisbury Plain Observing Group; on Tenerife at the Mons Observatory and I am a member of both Basingstoke and Andover AS . https://www.youtube.com/c/RefreshingViews http://www.refreshingviews.com/ We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs. When was the last time you made a significant decision in your life that you regretted later? If you were to backtrack your life today to that very same moment you made that decision, do you think you would have made a different decision? This is the question Stanley and I are addressing today looking into how human mind operates on the issue of Free will. Do we really have the freedom we think we have? After all, you made that decision to eat a fruit for snack, and not a cookie, out of your freewill, right? Well, it might be a little bit more complex than that.If a person's choice to commit a crime is determined by a certain pattern of neural activity, which is also the product of prior causes, bad genes, a dramatic childhood, lost sleep, or even cosmic-ray bombardment that mutated one of his genes, can we really say that his will was “free” when he committed that crime? We understand an average person's basic intuition is wanting to punish criminals. But before we jump into that conclusion lets listen to this conversation. This might completely change your attitude towards criminals and make you more compassionate towards people who make bad choices in life.Episode hosts: Stanley Samuel & Bino ManjasserilReferences:Sam Harris's Book on Free willhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Will_(book)Sam Harris's article on Illusion of Free will https://www.samharris.org/blog/the-illusion-of-free-willDoes Benjamin Libet's finding's prove that the action of lifting the hand were caused by the readiness potential? https://cpb-us-e1.wpmucdn.com/sites.dartmouth.edu/dist/9/2172/files/2020/01/C11.pdf A paper by Miller and Trevena (2009) show that the RP may only be the brain's preparation to make a conscious act, rather than a cause for it.https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19736023/ An article from the popular press debunking Libet's experiment as a proof against free-willhttps://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2019/09/free-will-bereitschaftspotential/597736/ Laplace's Demon - his take on the deterministic nature of the universe, derived from classical mechanics occurs in his book A philosophical essay on probabilities (1814): https://www.gutenberg.org/files/58881/58881-h/58881-h.htmA critique of Sam Harris book on Free will by John Horgan:https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/cross-check/will-this-post-make-sam-harris-change-his-mind-about-free-will/ Like this content? Arcan and OpenBSD, running OpenBSD 6.3 on RPI 3, why C is not a low-level language, HardenedBSD switching back to OpenSSL, how the Internet was almost broken, EuroBSDcon CfP is out, and the BSDCan 2018 schedule is available. Headlines Towards Secure System Graphics: Arcan and OpenBSD Let me preface this by saying that this is a (very) long and medium-rare technical article about the security considerations and minutiae of porting (most of) the Arcan ecosystem to work under OpenBSD. The main point of this article is not so much flirting with the OpenBSD crowd or adding further noise to software engineering topics, but to go through the special considerations that had to be taken, as notes to anyone else that decides to go down this overgrown and lonesome trail, or are curious about some less than obvious differences between how these things “work” on Linux vs. other parts of the world. A disclaimer is also that most of this have been discovered by experimentation and combining bits and pieces scattered in everything from Xorg code to man pages, there may be smarter ways to solve some of the problems mentioned – this is just the best I could find within the time allotted. I’d be happy to be corrected, in patch/pull request form that is 😉 Each section will start with a short rant-like explanation of how it works in Linux, and what the translation to OpenBSD involved or, in the cases that are still partly or fully missing, will require. The topics that will be covered this time are: Graphics Device Access Hotplug Input Backlight Xorg Pledging Missing Installing OpenBSD 6.3 (snapshots) on Raspberry pi 3 The Easy way Installing the OpenBSD on raspberry pi 3 is very easy and well documented which almost convinced me of not writing about it, but still I felt like it may help somebody new to the project (But again I really recommend reading the document if you are interested and have the time). Note: I'm always running snapshots and recommend anybody to do it as well. But the snapshots links will change to the next version every 6 month, so I changed the links to the 6.3 version to keep the blog post valid over times. If you're familiar to the OpenBSD flavors, feel free to use the snapshots links instead. Requirements Due to the lack of driver, the OpenBSD can not boot directly from the SD Card yet, So we'll need an USB Stick for the installtion target aside the SD Card for the U-Boot and installer. Also, a Serial Console connection is required. I Used a PL2303 USB to Serial (TTL) adapter connected to my Laptop via USB port and connected to the Raspberry via TX, RX and GND pins. iXsystems https://www.ixsystems.com/blog/truenas-m-series-veeam-pr-2018/ Why Didn’t Larrabee Fail? Every month or so, someone will ask me what happened to Larrabee and why it failed so badly. And I then try to explain to them that not only didn't it fail, it was a pretty huge success. And they are understandably very puzzled by this, because in the public consciousness Larrabee was like the Itanic and the SPU rolled into one, wasn't it? Well, not quite. So rather than explain it in person a whole bunch more times, I thought I should write it down. This is not a history, and I'm going to skip a TON of details for brevity. One day I'll write the whole story down, because it's a pretty decent escapade with lots of fun characters. But not today. Today you just get the very start and the very end. When I say "Larrabee" I mean all of Knights, all of MIC, all of Xeon Phi, all of the "Isle" cards - they're all exactly the same chip and the same people and the same software effort. Marketing seemed to dream up a new codeword every week, but there was only ever three chips: Knights Ferry / Aubrey Isle / LRB1 - mostly a prototype, had some performance gotchas, but did work, and shipped to partners. Knights Corner / Xeon Phi / LRB2 - the thing we actually shipped in bulk. Knights Landing - the new version that is shipping any day now (mid 2016). That's it. There were some other codenames I've forgotten over the years, but they're all of one of the above chips. Behind all the marketing smoke and mirrors there were only three chips ever made (so far), and only four planned in total (we had a thing called LRB3 planned between KNC and KNL for a while). All of them are "Larrabee", whether they do graphics or not. When Larrabee was originally conceived back in about 2005, it was called "SMAC", and its original goals were, from most to least important: Make the most powerful flops-per-watt machine for real-world workloads using a huge array of simple cores, on systems and boards that could be built into bazillo-core supercomputers. Make it from x86 cores. That means memory coherency, store ordering, memory protection, real OSes, no ugly scratchpads, it runs legacy code, and so on. No funky DSPs or windowed register files or wacky programming models allowed. Do not build another Itanium or SPU! Make it soon. That means keeping it simple. Support the emerging GPGPU market with that same chip. Intel were absolutely not going to build a 150W PCIe card version of their embedded graphics chip (known as "Gen"), so we had to cover those programming models. As a bonus, run normal graphics well. Add as little graphics-specific hardware as you can get away with. That ordering is important - in terms of engineering and focus, Larrabee was never primarily a graphics card. If Intel had wanted a kick-ass graphics card, they already had a very good graphics team begging to be allowed to build a nice big fat hot discrete GPU - and the Gen architecture is such that they'd build a great one, too. But Intel management didn't want one, and still doesn't. But if we were going to build Larrabee anyway, they wanted us to cover that market as well. ... the design of Larrabee was of a CPU with a very wide SIMD unit, designed above all to be a real grown-up CPU - coherent caches, well-ordered memory rules, good memory protection, true multitasking, real threads, runs Linux/FreeBSD, etc. Larrabee, in the form of KNC, went on to become the fastest supercomputer in the world for a couple of years, and it's still making a ton of money for Intel in the HPC market that it was designed for, fighting very nicely against the GPUs and other custom architectures. Its successor, KNL, is just being released right now (mid 2016) and should do very nicely in that space too. Remember - KNC is literally the same chip as LRB2. It has texture samplers and a video out port sitting on the die. They don't test them or turn them on or expose them to software, but they're still there - it's still a graphics-capable part. But it's still actually running FreeBSD on that card, and under FreeBSD it's just running an x86 program called DirectXGfx (248 threads of it). News Roundup C Is Not a Low-level Language : Your computer is not a fast PDP-11. In the wake of the recent Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, it's worth spending some time looking at root causes. Both of these vulnerabilities involved processors speculatively executing instructions past some kind of access check and allowing the attacker to observe the results via a side channel. The features that led to these vulnerabilities, along with several others, were added to let C programmers continue to believe they were programming in a low-level language, when this hasn't been the case for decades. Processor vendors are not alone in this. Those of us working on C/C++ compilers have also participated. What Is a Low-Level Language? Computer science pioneer Alan Perlis defined low-level languages this way: "A programming language is low level when its programs require attention to the irrelevant." While, yes, this definition applies to C, it does not capture what people desire in a low-level language. Various attributes cause people to regard a language as low-level. Think of programming languages as belonging on a continuum, with assembly at one end and the interface to the Starship Enterprise's computer at the other. Low-level languages are "close to the metal," whereas high-level languages are closer to how humans think. For a language to be "close to the metal," it must provide an abstract machine that maps easily to the abstractions exposed by the target platform. It's easy to argue that C was a low-level language for the PDP-11. They both described a model in which programs executed sequentially, in which memory was a flat space, and even the pre- and post-increment operators cleanly lined up with the PDP-11 addressing modes. Fast PDP-11 Emulators The root cause of the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities was that processor architects were trying to build not just fast processors, but fast processors that expose the same abstract machine as a PDP-11. This is essential because it allows C programmers to continue in the belief that their language is close to the underlying hardware. C code provides a mostly serial abstract machine (until C11, an entirely serial machine if nonstandard vendor extensions were excluded). Creating a new thread is a library operation known to be expensive, so processors wishing to keep their execution units busy running C code rely on ILP (instruction-level parallelism). They inspect adjacent operations and issue independent ones in parallel. This adds a significant amount of complexity (and power consumption) to allow programmers to write mostly sequential code. In contrast, GPUs achieve very high performance without any of this logic, at the expense of requiring explicitly parallel programs. The quest for high ILP was the direct cause of Spectre and Meltdown. A modern Intel processor has up to 180 instructions in flight at a time (in stark contrast to a sequential C abstract machine, which expects each operation to complete before the next one begins). A typical heuristic for C code is that there is a branch, on average, every seven instructions. If you wish to keep such a pipeline full from a single thread, then you must guess the targets of the next 25 branches. This, again, adds complexity; it also means that an incorrect guess results in work being done and then discarded, which is not ideal for power consumption. This discarded work has visible side effects, which the Spectre and Meltdown attacks could exploit. On a modern high-end core, the register rename engine is one of the largest consumers of die area and power. To make matters worse, it cannot be turned off or power gated while any instructions are running, which makes it inconvenient in a dark silicon era when transistors are cheap but powered transistors are an expensive resource. This unit is conspicuously absent on GPUs, where parallelism again comes from multiple threads rather than trying to extract instruction-level parallelism from intrinsically scalar code. If instructions do not have dependencies that need to be reordered, then register renaming is not necessary. Consider another core part of the C abstract machine's memory model: flat memory. This hasn't been true for more than two decades. A modern processor often has three levels of cache in between registers and main memory, which attempt to hide latency. The cache is, as its name implies, hidden from the programmer and so is not visible to C. Efficient use of the cache is one of the most important ways of making code run quickly on a modern processor, yet this is completely hidden by the abstract machine, and programmers must rely on knowing implementation details of the cache (for example, two values that are 64-byte-aligned may end up in the same cache line) to write efficient code. Backup URL Hacker News Commentary HardenedBSD Switching Back to OpenSSL Over a year ago, HardenedBSD switched to LibreSSL as the default cryptographic library in base for 12-CURRENT. 11-STABLE followed suit later on. Bernard Spil has done an excellent job at keeping our users up-to-date with the latest security patches from LibreSSL. After recently updating 12-CURRENT to LibreSSL 2.7.2 from 2.6.4, it has become increasingly clear to us that performing major upgrades requires a team larger than a single person. Upgrading to 2.7.2 caused a lot of fallout in our ports tree. As of 28 Apr 2018, several ports we consider high priority are still broken. As it stands right now, it would take Bernard a significant amount of his spare personal time to fix these issues. Until we have a multi-person team dedicated to maintaining LibreSSL in base along with the patches required in ports, HardenedBSD will use OpenSSL going forward as the default cryptographic library in base. LibreSSL will co-exist with OpenSSL in the source tree, as it does now. However, MK_LIBRESSL will default to "no" instead of the current "yes". Bernard will continue maintaining LibreSSL in base along with addressing the various problematic ports entries. To provide our users with ample time to plan and perform updates, we will wait a period of two months prior to making the switch. The switch will occur on 01 Jul 2018 and will be performed simultaneously in 12-CURRENT and 11-STABLE. HardenedBSD will archive a copy of the LibreSSL-centric package repositories and binary updates for base for a period of six months after the switch (expiring the package repos on 01 Jan 2019). This essentially gives our users eight full months for an upgrade path. As part of the switch back to OpenSSL, the default NTP daemon in base will switch back from OpenNTPd to ISC NTP. Users who have localopenntpdenable="YES" set in rc.conf will need to switch back to ntpd_enable="YES". Users who build base from source will want to fully clean their object directories. Any and all packages that link with libcrypto or libssl will need to be rebuilt or reinstalled. With the community's help, we look forward to the day when we can make the switch back to LibreSSL. We at HardenedBSD believe that providing our users options to rid themselves of software monocultures can better increase security and manage risk. DigitalOcean http://do.co/bsdnow -- $100 credit for 60 days How Dan Kaminsky Almost Broke the Internet In the summer of 2008, security researcher Dan Kaminsky disclosed how he had found a huge flaw in the Internet that could let attackers redirect web traffic to alternate servers and disrupt normal operations. In this Hacker History video, Kaminsky describes the flaw and notes the issue remains unfixed. “We were really concerned about web pages and emails 'cause that’s what you get to compromise when you compromise DNS,” Kaminsky says. “You think you’re sending an email to IBM but it really goes to the bad guy.” As the phone book of the Internet, DNS translates easy-to-remember domain names into IP addresses so that users don’t have to remember strings of numbers to reach web applications and services. Authoritative nameservers publish the IP addresses of domain names. Recursive nameservers talk to authoritative servers to find addresses for those domain names and saves the information into its cache to speed up the response time the next time it is asked about that site. While anyone can set up a nameserver and configure an authoritative zone for any site, if recursive nameservers don’t point to it to ask questions, no one will get those wrong answers. We made the Internet less flammable. Kaminsky found a fundamental design flaw in DNS that made it possible to inject incorrect information into the nameserver's cache, or DNS cache poisoning. In this case, if an attacker crafted DNS queries looking for sibling names to existing domains, such as 1.example.com, 2.example.com, and 3.example.com, while claiming to be the official "www" server for example.com, the nameserver will save that server IP address for “www” in its cache. “The server will go, ‘You are the official. Go right ahead. Tell me what it’s supposed to be,’” Kaminsky says in the video. Since the issue affected nearly every DNS server on the planet, it required a coordinated response to address it. Kaminsky informed Paul Vixie, creator of several DNS protocol extensions and application, and Vixie called an emergency summit of major IT vendors at Microsoft’s headquarters to figure out what to do. The “fix” involved combining the 16-bit transaction identifier that DNS lookups used with UDP source ports to create 32-bit transaction identifiers. Instead of fixing the flaw so that it can’t be exploited, the resolution focused on making it take more than ten seconds, eliminating the instantaneous attack. “[It’s] not like we repaired DNS,” Kaminsky says. “We made the Internet less flammable.” DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions), is intended to secure DNS by adding a cryptographic layer to DNS information. The root zone of the internet was signed for DNSSEC in July 2010 and the .com Top Level Domain (TLD) was finally signed for DNSSEC in April 2011. Unfortunately, adoption has been slow, even ten years after Kaminsky first raised the alarm about DNS, as less than 15 percent of users pass their queries to DNSSEC validating resolvers. The Internet was never designed to be secure. The Internet was designed to move pictures of cats. No one expected the Internet to be used for commerce and critical communications. If people lose faith in DNS, then all the things that depend on it are at risk. “What are we going to do? Here is the answer. Some of us gotta go out fix it,” Kaminsky says. We are in the fourth week of our new series, Researching College Options, and we spent time in our last episode talking about the SAT and ACT and their almost-unavoidable continuing role in college applications and admissions. Yes, we said that there are plenty of test-optional and test-flexible colleges, but the SAT and ACT are not dead and buried yet and won’t be any time soon, if ever. That topic was just about as inevitable as college applications season gets into full swing as this week’s topic, which is the super-important high school grade point average (GPA). Unfortunately, if your kid is about to be a senior, that high school GPA is pretty well locked in place at this point. A great fall semester might help a bit, but it won’t do much to change a GPA that is already based on six semesters of high school work and it won’t help at all if your kid is applying to a college under an Early Decision option and/or if your kid is applying to one or more colleges under an Early Action option by around November 1. Your kid’s current cumulative GPA is what it is, and now we have to help you and your kid think about how to deal with it. So, here are a few paragraphs of background from our first book, How To Find the Right College: A Workbook for Parents of High School Students: Unfortunately, there are no “high school grades optional” colleges that we know about. Certainly, most colleges will claim to look at the whole picture--a complete profile--of a student during the admissions process; nonetheless, that whole picture always includes high school grades. While there can be reasons that high school grades are lower than the student is capable of earning--such as difficult family situations or personal problems or trauma--those reasons would have to be explained compellingly in an essay or an additional letter of some sort to the college. In short, it is really very difficult to explain away mediocre or low high school grades. When a student has mediocre or low high school grades, it is ideal if that student happens to have high SAT or ACT scores. Then, the college can imagine that the student is bright, but perhaps had some reason for not performing as expected in high school classes. None of those reasons would be a great excuse, but some colleges will make an exception for such a student. However, most students who have mediocre or low high school grades do not have high SAT or ACT scores. For those students who have both mediocre or low high school grades and mediocre or low college admission test scores, the college choice with the highest cost-benefit ratio is probably a public two-year college--or maybe a public four-year college. By the way, great public four-year colleges can be just as difficult to get into as good private four-year colleges, so many of them are probably out of the running, too. If you look at the average high school GPAs of entering freshmen at many public state flagship universities, they are extraordinarily high--a 3.7 or 3.8 is not unheard of. Why again? Because many, many of the brightest students in a state want to attend--and do attend--the public state flagship university, for all the reasons we [have discussed before at USACollegeChat]. Understanding how important high school grades are in the college admission game is the first step, but it is one you should have taken with your senior several years ago. Parents of younger high school students, heed this early warning: Help your kid understand that there is really no way to make up for crummy--or even lackluster--high school grades when it comes time to apply to colleges. There just isn’t. So, let’s look again this week at what we call Step 13 in our new book, How To Explore Your College Options: A Workbook for High School Students--that is, Step 13 of getting the information that your kid needs to make good choices about where to apply. Finding out all of the information we call for in Step 13 will give you an idea about how likely it is that your kid will be accepted by a college if he or she decides to apply. Of course, no one can say for sure whether your kid’s grades or admission test scores or extracurricular and community service activities or letters of recommendation will be appealing enough to get him or her admitted to a particular college. But several academic hurdles stand between your kid and one or more colleges on his or her Long List of College Options (LLCO), and high school GPA is one of those hurdles. 1. High School GPAs of College Candidates So, we believe that your kid should find out the average high school GPA of admitted or enrolled freshmen in order to get a somewhat better grasp on whether he or she is likely to be admitted to that college. Here is what we wrote in our new book for kids like yours: For many, but not all, colleges, you will be able to find the full distribution of high school GPAs and the average high school GPA of the students enrolled in the freshman class by looking under C11 and C12 of the common data set on the college’s website. [You will probably need to search for “common data set” on the college’s website, and you might find that the data sets are available for several years.] You also might find [high school grades] on a Class Profile sheet on the website, but you will not find this information on College Navigator [the online resource provided by the National Center for Education Statistics]. [The] average high school GPA will be on a 4-point scale. For example, a great college might show an average high school GPA of 3.8, meaning that its enrolled freshmen did extremely well in their high school courses. As Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses have become increasingly popular and as more high schools have started to “weight” students’ grades in those courses (and sometimes in their own honors courses as well), there has been a rise in high school GPAs. In other words, when a student in a high school with weighted grades gets an A in a regular course, that A is worth a 4.0, or 4 points. But if a student in a high school with weighted grades gets an A in an Advanced Placement course, that A is worth a 5.0, or 5 points—that is, the grade has more “weight.” Whether your high school does or does not weight course grades is something that should be part of the high school narrative profile that your school’s counselor will send off to colleges with your high school transcript. That profile is helpful to colleges in judging your GPA. Nonetheless, one effect of all of this weighting of high school course grades appears to be that average high school GPAs of incoming freshmen are on the rise. We can tell this anecdotally by the fact that many colleges we profiled in our virtual college tour [back in Episodes 27 through 53 of USACollegeChat], including some not super-selective ones, post surprisingly high average GPAs well over a 3.5 for the incoming freshman class. So, look carefully at the average high school GPAs that colleges are putting out there and see how yours compares. And, remember, some colleges will not provide one. Well, that is a rather straightforward explanation of the high school GPA as one determinant in college admissions. As parents, it shouldn’t surprise you at all. But now let’s look at a newer explanation of that high school grade inflation, which we referred to, and its consequences. 2. The New Research on High School Grade Inflation This explanation comes to you from a July article in Inside Higher Ed, which is, in its own words, “the leading digital media company serving the higher education space. Born digital in the 21st Century at the height of the Internet revolution, our publication has become the trusted, go-to source of online news, thought leadership, and opinion over the last decade.” This article, by Scott Jaschik, is appropriately titled “High School Grades: Higher and Higher." Here is what Jaschik said about a new study, which was just released: The study . . . will be a chapter in Measuring Success: Testing, Grades and the Future of College Admissions, to be published next year by Johns Hopkins University Press. The two authors of the study are Michael Hurwitz, senior director at the College Board, and Jason Lee, a doctoral student at the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia. . . . The research is on students who take the SAT, and the study argues that these are representative of high school students who enroll in four-year colleges. The data come both from the Education Department and from surveys the College Board conducts of students who take the SAT. A key finding is that, looking at cohorts of high school graduates who finished from 1998 to 2016, the average high school GPA went up from 3.27 to 3.38. Notably, the gains were unequal among high schools, and the differences appear to favor students from wealthier (and whiter) high schools than average. The study groups high schools by the magnitude of grade inflation. In the top decile of growth in average GPAs [meaning that the GPAs rose the most], black and Latino students made up only 22 percent of students on average, and only 32 percent of students were eligible for free lunch. But in the bottom decile of GPA growth [meaning that the GPAs rose the least], black and Latino enrollments were an average of 61 percent, and more than half of students were eligible for free lunch. The study finds that the average GPA at the high schools with the most grade inflation (top decile) has hit 3.56, while the average at places that haven’t seen much grade inflation (bottom decile, largely minority) is 3.14. . . . [T]he study finds similar grade inflation in . . . weighted and unweighted grades. . . . (quoted from the article, emphasis added) Well, that is quite a lot to process. It’s bad enough that grade inflation is taking place and skewing the way that everyone has to think about high school achievement. But it’s much worse to know that whiter and richer kids are disproportionately benefiting from what is already a lousy trend. You can draw your own conclusions about why that is happening. And here is one further surprising finding from the study: . . . [T]he authors find that the proportion of students with A averages (including A-minus and A-plus) increased from 38.9 percent of the graduating class of 1998 to 47 percent of the graduating class of 2016. . . . (quoted from the article) What? I was surprised--more like flabbergasted--to learn that almost 40 percent of students in the graduating class of 1998 had A averages (even considering that this was perhaps a somewhat select sample of that graduating class, like kids who took the SAT). Nonetheless, almost 40 percent seems high to me--or, more precisely, inflated already. The fact that the figure is now 47 percent is more arresting still. Do we really believe that almost half of the 2016 high school graduates--even half of the graduates who took the SAT--deserved A averages? That seems like a lot of kids to me. But hold on a minute. Here is something that you might be thinking, something that would make these fantastic grades happy news, according to the article: . . . [T]he authors acknowledge in their study [that] there could be a reason for the grade inflation that would make educators celebrate. What if students are smarter or are being better educated, and so are earning their better grades? The authors reject these possibilities, and cite SAT scores to do so. If students were learning more, their SATs should be going up, or at the very least remaining stable. But during the period studied, SAT averages (math and verbal, 1,600-point scale) fell from 1,026 to 1,002. . . . (quoted from the article) Oh, so it’s just grade inflation after all. Here is the wrap-up and bottom line from the article: While the authors said they didn’t think many educators would be surprised that grade inflation is present in high schools, they said it was important to look at the variation among high schools, a circumstance that has received less attention. High schools “most prone to grade inflation are the resourced schools,” Lee said, “the ones with the highest level of affluence.” For those at high schools without resources, generally with lower GPAs, grade inflation elsewhere “puts them at a disadvantage in the college admissions process.” (quoted from the article) So, this is one more instance of students from poorer communities--who are, as a matter of fact, disproportionately students of color--facing a tougher path to college. And this is one more instance of students from wealthier communities--who are, as a matter of fact, disproportionately white students--getting an undeserved break. 3. What Does It Mean for You What does all this mean for your kid, regardless of how well-to-do or not-well-to-do your high school community is? It means that the race for good grades has gotten harder to win. Average high school GPAs of admitted freshmen are impressive--sometimes literally unbelievably impressive--even at colleges that are not in the top tier. If you have a senior at home and it is too late to improve his or her GPA, then you need to be sensible in looking at how your kid stacks up against the students who are being admitted to colleges on your kid’s Long List of College Options. If you have a younger kid at home, remind him or her every day just how important high school grades are--no matter what four-year college he or she is aiming for. Find our books on Amazon! We recap our devsummit experiences at BSDCambridge, share why memcmp is more complicated than expected, explore Docker on FreeBSD, and we look at a retro terminal. This episode was brought to you by Headlines BSDCam recap (https://wiki.freebsd.org/DevSummit/201708) The 2017 Cambridge DevSummit took place from 2-4 August 2017. The event took place over three days including a formal dinner at St John's College, and was attended by 55 registered developers and guests. Prior to the start of the conference, we had a doc hacking lounge, the computer lab provided a room where we could meet and try to spend some time on documentation. Sevan walked two interested people through the process of creating a documentation patch and submitting it for the first time. In the process, found ways to improve the documentation on how to write documentation. The event is run "un-conference style" in that we brainstorm the actual session schedule on the first morning, with a focus on interactive topics that reflect the interests and exploit the knowledge of the attendees. The idea is to maximize the amount of discussion and decisions that can be made while we are all in the same room The first morning, we all gather in the slightly too small, and even more slightly under air conditioned FW11 classroom. We go around the room introducing ourselves, and listing a few topics we would be interested in discussing. Eventually the whiteboard is full of topics, with various numbers of ticks beside them to indicate the number of interested people There are breakout rooms of all sizes, so even topics with only a small group of interested folks can get a lot accomplished The most difficult is trying to schedule the sessions, as there is much overlap and people usually want to be in concurrent sessions, or someone's schedule means they won't be available that day, etc. This years working groups: Toolchain (Compilers, Linkers, External Toolchain, Static analysis and sanitizers) Virtualization (bhyve, xen, jails, docker) Transport (TCP) and Network Performance Security and mitigations (W^X, noexec stack, CFI, ASLR, KASLR, Safe Stack, etc) Testing (Status, What to test, How to test, QA for releases) Capsicum (Automation with LLVM etc, Casper, Namespacing, “Services”, capsh) Desktop / WiFi (drm-next, drivers, resume, power, installer, desktop, OOB Experience) Tracing (Blackbox, DTrace, KTR, ptrace, truss, hardware tracing) Packaging and Packaged Base (Sets, Kernels, Ports & flavours, sub-packages, privlib) Architectural Security Features (CPU Features: SGX, PXN/PAN, Pointer Authentication, AMD Memory Encryption, Libcrunch, RISC-V, CheriABI) Architectures and Embedded systems (RISC-V, ARM, ARM64, MIPS(64), SPARC64) Teaching (Audiences, Objectives, Targets, Material, future directions) Provisioning and Management Tools (CfgMgmt tools, Image building, VM/bhyve orchestration, Preconfigured VMs for testing, Wishlist) Storage (ZFS status update, ZFS encryption infrastructure, ZFS Zero Copy / Sendfile, Acceleration of checksums and raidz parity calculations, sesutil, mpsutil) And that wasn't everything. We then had a series of short talklets: Enhancing and replacing mmap() SDIO support eBPF support for FreeBSD Tracing + Virtualization Practical DMA Attack Protection On Thursday night there was a special dinner at St John's College Overall it was a great DevSummit, and I even managed to get some of the work assigned to me finished. Shortly I will commit an update to the boot loader menu that will automatically populate the kernel selection menu with the automatically detected list of installed kernels. The list is also properly refreshed when you switch boot environments. *** Hosts/BSD – for when you need to run your BSD inside a penguin (https://wiki.qemu.org/index.php/Hosts/BSD) This wiki provides details on how to run each of the various BSDs under QEMU The target audience is Linux developers looking to test their apps etc under BSD The wiki is in need of some love, there are some option questions, and it lacks some polish There are instructions on building qemu from source, but it should likely mention the qemu-devel port There should probably also be instructions on using other architectures, like ARM/MIPS etc If you have used QEMU, or would like to spend the time to learn how, please help update this wiki *** memcmp -- more complicated than you might expect (http://trust-in-soft.com/memcmp-requires-pointers-to-fully-valid-buffers/) “A suspicious pattern in open-source software” One bug recently found by John using tis-interpreter on a widely used open-source library involved the comparison of strings with memcmp. The unexpected condition was that memcmp was, in one case, called with a pointer to a buffer shorter than the length passed as third argument, breaking one of the two symmetrical pre-conditions in the function's ACSL contract A reason that may have made this use of memcmp look okay to the developer is that the buffers being passed to it always differed before the end of the buffers were reached. a memcmp implementation based on stopping as soon as a difference is found, would not have caused any out-of-bounds read access The first question raised was whether the pattern memcmp("a", "bc", 3) was problematic according to the letter of the C standard. If it was, the second question was whether the busy maintainer of one of the Open Source packages that make the Internet tick should be bothered with a bug report. I would like to be able to say that memcmp's ACSL contract was the product of careful deliberation, but unfortunately this is not the case: many standard function contracts were written quickly in order to get most of the standard library covered, and have not been tested by time. Anyway, upon proofreading the relevant clause in the C11 standard, my feeling was that the ACSL formalization was, in this particular case, right, and that it was undefined behavior to pass as memcmp argument a buffer that wasn't fully valid, even if the implementation sort-of needs to read the buffer's characters in order for the purpose of finding the first mismatch. The post then goes on to look at the memcmp code in glibc There are two distinct optimizations for long buffers, one that applies when both buffers start at the same offset modulo the word size, memcmpcommonalignment, and one that applies when they don't, memcmpnotcommonalignment. The function memcmpcommonalignment is relatively well-behaved: it reads from the two buffers aligned word by aligned word, and thus reads the entire words that contain differing bytes. If the caller passed buffers that aren't valid after the differing byte, this amounts to reading out of bounds, but this sort of out-of-bounds access is not detected by the typical MMU, which works at the scale of the page. The “notcommon_alignment” case, however, tells a different story. When passed the carefully (mis-)aligned buffers t1 and (char*)t2+1, although these buffers differ in the 8th byte, Glibc's implementation of memcmp reads 8 bytes beyond the end of t1. By making the 16th byte differ instead of the 8th one, it is also possible to make Glibc's implementation of memcmp read 16 bytes beyond the end of t1. In conclusion, yes, some implementations of memcmp will crash when invoked with buffers that aren't valid for the full length, even if they differ early. The circumstances are rare (probably the reason this bug was still there to be found in a library that had already been tested with all the available techniques) but outside the programmer's control. The pattern described in this post should be reported as a bug when found. It is interesting to read the detailed analysis of a bug in such a basic libc feature *** News Roundup Docker on FreeBSD (http://daemon-notes.com/articles/network/docker) There are two approaches to running Docker on FreeBSD. First one was created back in 2015 and it was a native port of Docker engine to FreeBSD. It was an ambitious project but nobody stepped forward to continuously port the never-ending flow of upstream code to FreeBSD. So the port still exists (sysutils/docker-freebsd) but it wasn't updated since 2015 and it is Docker v1 (it is v17 as of 2017). The other approach is to use official way of running Docker on platforms other than Linux. Well, somewhat official as Docker still does not support FreeBSD as a host officially. This is docker-machine tool which in turn will use VirtualBox to run a virtual machine with Linux and Docker engine. docker utility on the host will communicate with the engine inside VB where all the work will be done. This article describes what needs to be done to start using it. Before we begin you need VirtualBox installed. Do not skip adding /boot/loader.conf and /etc/rc.conf lines mentioned on that page. You won't need user inteface or anything, docker-machine will do all the work, just make sure VirtualBox is present and ready to be used. `pkg install docker docker-machine docker-compose' Docker will store its stuff in ~/.docker. You might not want the virtual machine image files to live in your home, in this case just create a symlink: mkdir ~/.docker ln -s /storage/docker ~/.docker/machine docker-machine create --driver virtualbox --virtualbox-memory 2048 --virtualbox-cpu-count 2 --virtualbox-disk-size 102400 --virtualbox-hostonly-cidr "10.2.1.1/24" docker1 Here's the example. We are creating machine named docker1. It is using VirtualBox driver, the vm has 2G of memory, 2 cores and 100G of disk space. docker-machine setups VirtualBox to use host-only network adapter (it will create vboxnet0 interface on the host automatically) and we are instructing it to use 10.2.1.1/24 as the address of this adapter — change it to what suits your needs or omit this flag (default is 192.168.99.1/24). And basically that is all. Check if it is running: docker-machine ls If you do open VirtualBox interface you will find a virtual machine named docker1 running. You can start/stop/whatever your machine using docker-machine utility. Here's how you can connect to the machine: docker utility by default tries to talk to Docker engine running on the same host. However with specific environment variables you can instruct it to talk to other host. docker-machine can export these variables for you. eval docker-machine env docker1 docker run hello-world There was quite a bit of discussion about docker at the FreeBSD developers summit in Cambridge during the first week of August. Two docker developers who had worked on the Mac OS X port, one of whom is an OpenBSD advocate, explained how docker has evolved, and the linux-isms have been abstracted away such that a truly native docker solution for FreeBSD can be built and maintained with a lot less headache than before I look forward to seeing if we can't make that happen *** The POSIX Shell And Utilities (http://shellhaters.org/) The POSIX Shell And Utilities Compiled for The Shell Hater's Handbook *** PostgreSQL – logging to a file (http://dan.langille.org/2017/07/31/postgresql-logging-to-a-file/) These steps were carried out on FreeBSD 11.0 with PostgreSQL 9.6 (two of my favorite tools). I like logging. I like logging PostgreSQL. With logs, you can see what happened. Without, you can only guess. Setting up logging for PostgreSQL involves several parts, each of which must be completed or else I don't get what I want. This is not a criticism of PostgreSQL. It's a feature. I am documenting this because each time I configure a new PostgreSQL instance, it takes me more than one iteration to get it working. The goal: this post lets both you and me get it right the first time. The parts include: + Telling PostgreSQL to log via syslog + Telling FreeBSD to local postgres to /var/log/postgres.log (my preference). + Telling PostgreSQL the things you want logged. + Changes to postgresql.conf The file location varies with the version installed. For PostgreSQL 9.6 on FreeBSD, the file is /var/db/postgres/data96/postgresql.conf (adjust 96 according to the version installed). I made these changes to that file. log_destination = 'syslog' log_min_messages = notice log_min_error_statement = notice log_checkpoints = on log_lock_waits = on log_timezone = 'UTC' By default, PostgreSQL logs to the local0 facility and is controlled by the syslog_facility in postgresql.conf. This will be used in syslog.conf (see the next section of this post). The above mentioned changes require a reload: service postgresql reload Changes to /etc/syslog.conf Now that we have PostgreSQL logging to syslog, we want to tell syslog where to put those messages. I changed this line in /etc/syslog.conf:*.notice;authpriv.none;kern.debug;lpr.info;mail.crit;news.err /var/log/messages With .notice pulling in some local0 messages, adding local0.none to the line will free the messages up for later use in the configuration file. Otherwise, the PostgreSQL messages will be in /var/log/messages. The changed line is: `.notice;authpriv.none;kern.debug;lpr.info;mail.crit;news.err;local0.none /var/log/messages Then, to get the messages into my preferred location, I added this to the file: local0.* /var/log/postgresql.log` Log file rotation For rotating my log file, I added a new file: /usr/local/etc/newsyslog.conf.d/postgresql96 /var/log/postgresql.log pgsql:wheel 640 7 * $D0 GB /var/db/postgres/data96/postmaster.pid 30 Before restarting syslog, I did this, so the destination file existed. This isn't always/strictly necessary, but because the ownership is not chown root:wheel, I do it to get that part set. touch /var/log/postgresql.log chown pgsql:wheel Restarting syslog: sudo kill -HUP `sudo cat /var/run/syslog.pid ` That's it Now you should see PostgreSQL logging in /var/log/postgresql.log. mandoc-1.14.2 released (http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20170729122350) i just released portable mandoc-1.14.2. It is available now from http://mandoc.bsd.lv/ . All downstream maintainers are encouraged to update their ports and packages from 1.14.1 to 1.14.2. Mandoc 1.14.2 is a feature release introducing: a new -Tmarkdown output mode anchors for deep linking into -Thtml manual pages a superset of the functionality of the former mdoclint(1) utility a new -Wstyle message level with several new messages automatic line breaking inside individual tbl(7) cells a rewrite of the eqn(7) lexer, and some eqn(7) rendering improvements support for many additional low-level roff(7) features and various smaller features and bug fixes. For more details, see: http://mandoc.bsd.lv/NEWS With the improved mandoc features, only twenty-five out of the ten thousand software packages in the OpenBSD ports tree still need groff to format their manual pages. Since the project has been called "mandoc" rather than "mdocml" for several years now, the website, the distribution tarball, and the source extraction directory are now also called "mandoc" rather than "mdocml". The release was tested on the following systems: + OpenBSD-current and OpenBSD-stable + NetBSD-current + illumos + Debian Linux + Void Linux x86_64 glibc and musl + Crux Linux + SunOS 5.11.2, 5.10, and 5.9 As before, catman(8) and the regression suite cannot be used on SunOS 5.10 and SunOS 5.9. A big thanks to everybody who provided patches, bug reports, feature suggestions, advice, and help with testing!
