"Life has been a journey I am proud of," Libra Forde. A perfect quote to not only describe Libra's life so far, but also this interview. Libra, the Executive Director of the Women's Foundation of Oregon was born and raised in New York City. The only child of two wildly talented parents (her mother was a successful runway model and Dad was Denzel Washington's first acting coach and the King of Cartoons on Pee-Wee's Playhouse), she talks about the influence they both had on her. Her parents were adamant that she go to college and think about a "real job," and while she says she struggled in college (it wasn't her first choice), she turned things around and made it work for her. The journey continues with a move to Hawaii, finding her voice in Toastmasters, becoming a keynote speaker, and working to make this place beyond our existence.

Discovering some of the shortest-lived video game consoles.Episode 209 celebrates the unofficial end of summer with a heavy dose of Gen-X nostalgia. It all begins with a children's comedy icon. Gray suit, red bow tie, an affinity for bicycles and talking furniture; it all equals the one and only Pee-Wee Herman. We take a look back at the beginning of the character and its evolution. Plus proof that Pee-Wee's brand of entertainment is timeless.Back in the 1960s, choices for entertainment were far fewer than today. While there was no internet or smartphones, there was no shortage of fun board games to play. There will be a mix of classics and lesser-known games to bring back memories of Family Fun Nights. You won't find the NES, Genesis, or PlayStation on this week's Top 5. We're going to look at some of the shortest-lived video game consoles. Some were ahead of their time while others were plagued with poor development and marketing. On the forty- ninth episode of All the Film Things, I had the pleasure of interviewing producer/ director Jonathan Berman! Jonathan Berman is a California- based producer/ director who has been working in the industry for nearly 40 years. Before making his own documentaries often focused on sub- cultures not often highlighted in mainstream media, such as Commune (2005) and The Shvitz (1993), he worked as a producer, co- writer, and assistant sound editor on films and television shows with one of his first jobs being a production assistant on the set of Pee Wee's Playhouse. My Friend Paul (1999), Jonathan's sophomore documentary for which he directed, wrote, and produced was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Slamdance Film Festival in 1999. His latest film, Calling All Earthlings (2018), won the Debut Feature Competition Jury Prize at the Illuminate Film Festival in 2018. Aside from his work in film production, he is a professor at Cal State San Marcos School of Arts and has taught courses on subjects like documentary filmmaking, media distribution, and both US and international cinema.Jonathan's documentary Commune, which is focused on the commune of Black Bear Ranch in the late 60s through the 70s, is celebrating its 20th anniversary by being screened in its newly restored form across the US. Three more screenings in California have been announced with the next in San Rafael on September 12, another in Los Angeles on September 17, and the last announced screening on September 20 in Ojai, California. More screenings are expected to be announced so follow @CommuneTheMovie on Instagram and Facebook to stay updated on the film and its upcoming screenings! This is Jonathan's first time on ATFT! I got connected to Jonathan thanks to Kelly Hargraves who presented me this excellent opportunity and then became a big help in setting the interview up. This episode was recorded on August 7, 2025. In this episode, Jonathan talks about his post- production process, specifically when it comes to trimming down hundreds of hours of footage to form a film, as well as his love for old noir and comedy films from the 1930s, and meeting Christopher Nolan. We also compared his film Commune to one of my favorite films: Easy Rider (1969)! All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

The Righteous Gemstones is a big broad comedy about excess, except for the first episode of season 4, which takes place nearly 200 years before the main series. With the American Civil as the backdrop, this story is gritty and dirty, a complete departure from the bulk of the series. Pee-wee as Himself is a disarming documentary playing with what is true and what is Hollywood gamesmanship. Featuring an uncompromising interview with Paul Reubens as he wrestles with where Pee-Wee starts and Reubens ends. A common thread between these two projects is pristine sound work that leads the charge. The Emmy nominated Supervising sound editors/re-recording mixers for both Righteous Gemstones (Nicholas Renbeck) and Pee-wee as Himself (Daniel Timmons) join Tonebenders for a fascinating talk, as they compare and contrast working on these two very different projects. MOVIE MIKE'S MOVIE PODCAST: Mike was recently inspired by the Paul Reubens’ documentary after learning about Pee Wee’s Big Adventure being such an important first film for Tim Burton. He shared what directors he believes made the biggest splashes with their debut studio films, why he thinks the Oscars are wrong about animation and what new directors are just heating up. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about The Phoenician Scheme from one of his favorite directors Wes Anderson. Benicio Del Toro plays a wealthy and maligned industrialist Zsa Zsa Korda , who, after surviving one too many assassination attempts by rivals, names his forgotten daughter as his sole heir-over his eight sons. Mike talks about if Wes Anderson is still cool, where it ranks among his most recent films and why Michael Cera was born for this role. In the Trailer Park, Mike and Kelsey talk about Wicked: For Good, going to see Wicked on Broadway this summer and how it lines up with The Wizard of Oz. New Episodes Every Monday! In this compelling episode of The Lo Life, host Lo is joined by actor, writer, and producer Greg Furman to dissect the unexpected, emotional, and eye-opening documentary on Paul Reubens—the man behind the iconic Pee-wee Herman. Together, they unpack the cultural impact of a character that defined a generation, while also exploring the darker side of fame and the media's relentless effort to tear down one of Hollywood's most unique creative voices. The episode dives into how Reubens' eccentric genius challenged societal norms, only to be met with scandal, public shaming, and conservative-fueled controversy. Lo and Greg bring their own Hollywood experience into the conversation, drawing powerful parallels between their creative journeys and Reubens' battle to stay true to himself in an industry that doesn't always reward originality. What starts as a pop culture deep dive turns into something far more human—an inspiring and surprisingly emotional conversation about art, identity, and what it costs to be different. This isn't just a tribute to Pee-wee—it's a reexamination of a misunderstood icon, and a reminder that the truth is rarely what makes the headlines Facebook: Join the Coven: The Lo Life FB Group Instagram: @thelolifepodcast Your host: @stylelvr Guest: Greg Furman TikTok: @thelolifepodcast We have deals and steals for our kings and kweens- All thanks to our sponsors QUINCE: High fashion clothing for affordable prices. The new HBO documentary Pee-Wee As Himself isn't the boilerplate Hollywood profile you think it is. You get the biographical details you expect – how young avant-garde artist Paul Ruebens created the persona of Pee-Wee Herman, and the meteoric rise and fall that followed. But you also get a sense of what it cost Reubens to insist that Pee-Wee wasn't simply a persona, but in fact a real person. It's streaming now on Max.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopculture Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

On this week's show, the secret word is: Pee-wee. Dana, Steve, and Julia discuss the new documentary Pee-wee as Himself. The fascinating two-part film, directed by Matt Wolf, attempts to reveal the complex man Paul Reubens behind the beloved, surprisingly subversive, goofball that was Pee-wee Herman. Next, they tee off to talk about Stick, the new comedy series starring Owen Wilson set in the world of professional golf. In the third segment, they're joined by Atlantic staff writer Caity Weaver to chat about her recently published, rollicking travel piece An Innocent Abroad in Mark Twain's Paris. In an exclusive Slate Plus segment, inspired by a listener question, the hosts each share their dream city they'd love to live in but have only ever visited. Endorsements: Steve: Sly Lives! the Questlove-directed documentary about the hugely influential pop star Sly Stone who recently passed away. Julia: Season 2 of Poker Face and its smorgasbord of incredible guest appearances by beloved character actors. Dana: The delightfully designed single-purpose website Oracle of Bacon. Susie and Sarah are headed to a baseball game, but first Susie needs to explain the importance of safety and the precariousness of Buc Fever after a man recently fell at a game. We disuss the P Diddy sketch artist who appears to have the same talent as the recent caricaturist Sarah had, and why Sarah thinks he doesn't know how to draw people of color. We talk about the Pee Wee Herman documentary, how he came to resent the character he created, and how creativity can be a burden. Susie describes the Nathan Fielder docu-comedy series, The Rehearsal, and the way pilots could be saved through a small change in training and how the comedian is trying to save lives through updates to aviation.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Get 25% off your first month of Ritual when you visit https://ritual.com/BRAINCANDY and add Essential Protein today.New customers can get the Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara and a mini-sized Brilliant Eye Brightener at a special set price with free shipping at https://thrivecausemetics.com/BRAINCANDYSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Pee-Wee As Himself is an HBO Max two-part documentary exploring the life and career of Paul Reubens, known for his character Pee-wee Herman. Directed by Matt Wolf, Pee-wee as Himself is constructed around over 40 hours of candid interviews with Reubens, conducted before his passing in 2023. The film delves into his early influences in circus and avant-garde theater, his meteoric rise with Pee-wee's Playhouse and Pee-wee's Big Adventure, and the deliberate separation he maintained between his personal identity and his Pee-wee persona. The documentary also addresses the controversies that impacted Reubens' career, including his 1991 arrest and the 2002 charges related to vintage erotica, which were later dropped. In a poignant final audio message recorded shortly before his death, Reubens reflects on the pain of being misunderstood and emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance and non-conformity—a message he consistently aimed to impart to his audience. Joining Kate is two-time Emmy and Grammy award-winning comedian Kathy Griffin, one of Paul Reubens good friends.
