Patron Points President Erik Ogren and Director of Marketing Heather Webb talk with CSP's Vice President of Content Strategy Abbey Lewis for a special episode of the "At Your Convenience" podcast about their company's involvement in the Outlook Report, sharing insights on customer loyalty in convenience retail.Inflation has changed consumer behavior, with 35-40% of convenience store purchases now being planned rather than spontaneous. "Customers are making deliberate choices on where to go and what to buy," Webb said, requiring retailers to engage through personalized communication at the moment of decision-making.Both Webb and Ogren highlighted the growing importance of retail media networks for monetizing customer data. Loyalty members show a four-times increase in visits, 20-34% larger basket sizes and three times more likelihood to cross-shop categories.

The convenience-store industry is at a critical inflection point where data infrastructure and artificial intelligence will determine which retailers thrive and which fall behind, according to Thomas Weinandy, economist at Upside.Weinandy shared these insights during a recent episode of CSP's "At Your Convenience" podcast, recorded live at the Outlook Leadership Conference. The conversation centered on key findings from CSP's Outlook Report, in which Upside participated as a data partner. One of the most significant shifts Weinandy identified is the rise of cross-shopping behavior: "[It's this] uncommitted customer behavior where consumers are visiting multiple stores, they're involved in many different loyalty programs, they're filling up at multiple gas stations and they're trying to find that value and the loyalty is split across many banners."

Gerard and Laurent welcome Tinne Van der Straeten, CEO of WindEurope—the leading voice of the wind industry in Europe, representing more than 600 members across the entire value chain. Tinne brings a distinctive perspective to the discussion. As Belgium's Minister for Energy during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, she experienced an energy crisis firsthand. Her background in policymaking offers a different vantage point from that of investors, shaped by the practical realities and trade-offs of government decision-making.  The conversation highlights that, despite ongoing challenges, wind energy continues to expand rapidly across Europe, with €45 billion in final investment decisions recorded in 2025. There is now a clear opportunity to repower first-generation onshore turbines, which could double installed capacity and potentially triple electricity generation. Offshore wind also stands out as a major growth area, with the North Sea remaining the central hub, while the Baltic Sea is developing steadily and early signs of momentum are emerging in Spain.  At the same time, the discussion points to the persistence of outdated, ideologically driven debates around energy sources—such as gas in Germany or nuclear in France—which increasingly feel disconnected from current realities. Policies like bans on onshore wind in Poland and offshore wind in Sweden illustrate decisions that risk slowing progress.  A central theme is the urgent need to electrify demand, particularly through the adoption of electric vehicles, heat pumps, and the expansion of data centers.  The conversation concludes by emphasizing that the missing piece is a large, integrated pan-European grid—potentially extending to Canada—combined with battery storage. Such infrastructure would accelerate decarbonization, support economic resilience, and help Europe regain control over its energy future.Sources:GWEC 2026 https://www.gwec.net/reports/globalwindreportWindEurope Wind Energy Statistics and Outlook Report https://windeurope.org/news/europe-invested-45bn-in-new-wind-energy-in-2025-market-tampering-would-put-future-investments-at-acute-risk/ WindEurope energy system cost study: https://windeurope.org/news/a-renewables-based-energy-system-will-save-europe-1-6-trillion/

JP Morgan's latest M&A report reveals something fascinating: despite ongoing uncertainty, global deal volumes hit $2.2 trillion (up 27% year-over-year).Here's what caught my attention: - Mega deals increased 57% because bigger players can thrive when smaller competitors freeze up. - Cross-border activity actually grew 24% despite rising protectionism as companies use M&A to position around trade uncertainties rather than avoid them. - And get this - AI infrastructure needs will drive $1 trillion in spending over the next 5 years, with data center capacity needing to increase 100-fold.Technology M&A surged 42%, financial services up 56%, and even media jumped 51% as consolidation becomes a survival strategy. The bottom line? In Episode 61 of STR Data Lab, Jamie Lane sits down with Bram Gallagher, fellow economist at AirDNA, to review this year's performance and forecast the 2024 outlook for the U.S. short-term rental industry. 2023 brought challenges for STR operators, with a 4.9% drop in RevPAR — the first annual decline since AirDNA began tracking data in 2014. Yet, the industry saw remarkable milestones, with record-high demand in July and over 1.6 million listings by September. The economic landscape showed resilience, with unemployment remaining below 4% and a trend of declining inflation. However, these positive economic indicators, along with a growth in property supply, led to a leveling off in occupancy gains. STR operators experienced reduced pricing flexibility, as travelers showed a growing preference for more budget-friendly accommodation options. The absence of a recession in 2023, thanks to effective Federal Reserve measures, paves the way for a stable economic outlook in 2024. Factors such as declining inflation, strong employment, and excess savings are expected to fuel consumer spending. While the Fed may maintain high-interest rates, a potential rate cut by the end of 2024 could influence mortgage rates. The housing market, currently grappling with affordability issues, faces potential risks, with projections indicating a 2% decrease in home prices by 2024. The economic scenarios discussed include moderate downside, upside, and severe downside, each impacting revenue growth. The AirDNA 2024 Outlook Report predicts a positive shift in the market. Economic recovery is expected to boost demand growth to 10.7%, a rebound from 6.7% in 2023. Supply growth, moderated by high mortgage rates, is likely to align with demand, estimated at 10.9%. Occupancy rates are projected to stabilize at 54.7%, similar to 2023 levels. Average Daily Rates are expected to increase by 2.1%, leading to a 1.9% rise in RevPAR. Despite some economic uncertainties, the market outlook is cautiously optimistic. Bram concludes with a positive note on strong labor market growth as a promising sign for the coming year. Global Economic Challenges Ahead: Exploring IMF's 2023 World Economic Outlook Report

The NeoLiberal Round

In today's episode, we're going to unpack the latest update from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which sheds light on the current state of the global economy in 2023. The IMF's World Economic Outlook, released just a few days ago, paints a picture of sluggish growth, persistent challenges, and the consequences of significant policy shifts. Today, we'll dissect the key findings and delve into what this means for the broader global economic landscape. Global GDP Growth: A Sluggish Trajectory The IMF's latest report brings sobering news. The global economy is in for a bumpy ride in 2023 and 2024, with a downward revision in growth forecasts. Global GDP is now projected to grow by a modest 3.0 percent this year, down from the 3.5 percent growth we witnessed in 2022. Looking ahead, the IMF anticipates a marginal decrease to 2.9 percent in 2024, a slight adjustment from its April 2023 forecast of 3.0 percent. The report emphasizes a crucial point: economic activity has yet to regain its pre-pandemic vigor, especially in emerging markets and developing economies. What's more, we're seeing widening disparities among different regions. Various factors are identified as culprits, holding back the recovery. These include the lasting impacts of the pandemic, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and the increasing fragmentation of the global economic landscape. But it's not just long-term challenges; cyclical issues also weigh in, such as the effects of monetary policy tightening to combat inflation, the withdrawal of fiscal support in the face of mounting debt, and the impact of extreme weather events. Persistent Challenges from 2022 While many hoped to leave behind the challenges of 2022, we find that numerous problems from that year persist, creating a climate of ongoing uncertainty and subdued growth prospects. Issues such as elevated global debt, the Ukraine crisis, and heightened geopolitical tensions are still very much with us in 2023. The report also underscores that inflation is projected to remain elevated in advanced economies until at least 2025. Additionally, there's the matter of China, a nation that played a pivotal role in bolstering global growth earlier this year by reopening its economy. However, we now see a property crisis in China, which poses an additional downside risk. If not effectively managed, this crisis could potentially have far-reaching consequences for the global economy. Balanced Risks and Policy Moves Despite these formidable challenges, the IMF report suggests that the risks to the global economic outlook are somewhat more balanced compared to six months ago. In the past, we were deeply concerned about the U.S. and Swiss banking crises and the looming specter of a catastrophic U.S. debt default. But the landscape has evolved since then, with policymakers taking measures to address these pressing issues. As we consider the broader economic landscape, it's crucial to take note of the Federal Reserve's determination to gradually raise interest rates. This decision remains in place even in light of recent predictions by JP Morgan Chase, which forecast a potential global recession by the end of this year. We'll be exploring the implications of this monetary policy and its potential impact on the economy. Income Inequality and Relative Deprivation Lastly, we'll delve into the pressing issue of income inequality, measured by the Gini coefficient. Income disparities continue to widen, with the wealthy getting richer and the less fortunate becoming even poorer. This is particularly noticeable in the most economically vulnerable areas, leading to an alarming increase in crime and violence. This rise in income inequality and its social ramifications bolster the theory of Relative Deprivation, an idea we've discussed in detail in "Neoliberal Globalization Reconsidered, Neo-Capitalism and the Death of Nation." #Ep.058 The economic performance of emerging markets in the post-COVID-19 world has been a mixed landscape of growth, vulnerability, and resilience. Driven by rebounding commodity prices and supportive fiscal policies, many economies experienced robust recovery, but this revival has been uneven across regions. Factors such as varying global trade impacts, and differences in exposure to external financial conditions have contributed to this disparity. Additionally, challenges such as high debt levels, inflationary pressures, and structural weaknesses persist. While some nations, notably in Asia, have adapted strongly, others, particularly in Latin America and Africa, face external vulnerabilities, leading to a multifaceted and inconsistent picture of economic performance across emerging markets. In this episode, Nirjan Rai and Satyam Panday sit down to unpack S&P Global's Recent Emerging Markets Outlook Report. They begin by discussing the key global takeaways from the report, then focus on the economic performances of China and India, especially in the context of post-pandemic recovery and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Satyam also offers his take on the short- and long-term projections for these two countries. They end the conversation with a discussion on why Nepal has failed to exploit the economic performances of its two neighbors and present some thoughts on what Nepal should do to leverage its future growth. Satyam is the Chief US Economist at S&P Global Ratings. Until just recently, he was the Chief Emerging Markets Economist for S&P. He has also taught at Boston College and Brandeis University and has been a research fellow at the US Congressional Budget Office. Satyam holds a Ph.D. in International Economics and Finance and specializes in macroeconomics, development economics, and applied econometrics. He is also a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at PEI. For The Scoop's final episode of 2022, Larry Cermak, vice president of Research at The Block, joins host Frank Chaparro to unpack highlights from The Block Research's 2023 Digital Assets Outlook Report and to break down some of the major events that shaped the crypto market in 2022. The Block Research's 2023 Digital Assets Outlook Report offers a deep look into the state of the crypto markets today and analysis on trends that could emerge in the year ahead. Generally speaking, Cermak says institutional investors are becoming more comfortable with crypto's extreme volatility: “The institutional investors understand now that just because we have dropped by 80%, and just because a lot of funds and a lot of companies have gotten destroyed, that doesn't mean that crypto will not come back. They understand the volatility, understand the cycles, and a lot of them want to be in a better position before the next movement.” Although bear markets are characterized by a lack of exuberance among market participants, “these are really the periods when a lot of new projects are born,” Cermak says. “A lot of new narratives for the industry are going to be born.” Disclaimer: Beginning in 2021, Michael McCaffrey, the former CEO and majority owner of The Block, took a series of loans from former FTX and Alameda founder Sam Bankman-Fried.
