I am SO excited in this episode to speak to Tara Mohr, an expert in women's leadership and well-being, and an author, educator and certified coach. Her book, Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create and Lead, is one of my favourite books, and I am constantly recommending it to people. It provides real, practical tools to help women quiet self-doubt, identify their callings, “unhook” from praise and criticism, unlearn counterproductive "good girl" habits, and begin taking bold action. In this episode, Tara explains what she means by "playing big", and sheds light on why being more loyal to our dreams than our fears can shift our life's trajectory. We tackle the pervasive influence of the inner critic, debunk myths around imposter syndrome, and offer practical strategies to harness the wisdom of our inner mentor...and much more.*Highlights:(3 mins) - Empowering women to play big(9 mins) - Navigating work and motherhood(19 mins) - Managing the inner critic(33 mins) - Harnessing your inner mentor(44 mins) - Unhooking from feedback(52 mins) - Improving communication and visibility(55 mins) - Top 3 tips *ResourcesPlaying Big, by Tara MohrThe Inner mentor visualisation *Social media@tarasophia Hosted on Acast. "I was feeling this self censoring and constant push pull in sharing my voice and just feeling quite afraid of going for things that I wanted and so I got really interested in that gap and started to work with people with those clients around the inner critic. And my first guess was like, oh, we're going to dig into their childhoods and find who was the critical source in their lives that created this voice. And very quickly, I found out that was not going to be my answer because I would hear the exact same adult inner critic in these women. And some were like, my parents were so supportive. And some were like, my parents ignored me, my parents cheered me on, my parents were so critical. And yet this sort of adult, more professionally oriented, more adult selfhood oriented inner critics sounded the same despite this wide range of early experiences. So then I had to look a little more culturally and also biologically. And what became clear was that that inner critic voice really spoke up when something took us out of our comfort zone, or when we were contemplating something out of our comfort zone. And to place that in a context of gender, for women, what is unsafe and what we very deeply learn is unsafe is visibility, power, too much success, shining bright, standing out from the crowd in some way, all of that." So Says Tara Mohr, a coach, educator and the author of Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead, which is celebrating its 10th birthday this fall. I first met Tara a decade ago and was so taken with her and her insights that we did four stories together—stories that were deeply resonant with women everywhere. These stories were about understanding—and releasing—your inner critic, locating your inner mentor, examining the ways in which you keep yourself in the shadows and why, and the most potent one of them all: why women are so quick to criticize other women. We cover this same ground 10 years on—and it's just as powerful as it was then. I loved reconnecting with Tara and can't wait to do more with her over the coming decades, specifically revisioning what it might look like if more women led—but not in a model defined by men, in a way that might be uniquely their own. Do you truly believe that you have what it takes to succeed? Or do you find yourself held back by self doubt? Too often, we don't trust ourselves enough to make the big power moves or decisions that will move the needle in our businesses. You may believe that you're too inexperienced or that you don't have the skills necessary to take your best next steps or attract your dream clients. It's really easy to fall victim to feelings of imposter syndrome! But as I tell my coaching clients and community, you already have all the best answers inside of you — all you need to do is learn how to access your inner mentor.Your inner mentor is a version of yourself that is further ahead, more experienced, and has the insights that you need to take your business to the next level. While this concept may sound a little woo-woo or magical, it reflects the very foundation of good coaching work. The best coaches don't just offer you answers and instructions, they help you tap into and trust your own knowledge and intuition! This episode of The Business of Thinking Big draws on the concept of the inner mentor developed by Tara Mohr in her book Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead. Bonus points for whoever knows which of the books we review today Millie called out as a favorite in Episode 132. It's linked below! A quick reminder - before you shop the big guys for you reading and listening think local retail first. How to support your local booksellers: 1. Shop in store! New Zealand followers, you can shop directly with Millie HERE. The Books: Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead by Tara Mohr (2014) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: To us, this book was all about overcoming your inner critic and self doubt. Millie shared this quote: “Feedback can only tell you something about the person giving you the feedback. It can't tell you anything essential about yourself.” - Tara Mohr I loved this one: “I wrote this book because I'm tired of meeting women who have important messages to share but whose self-doubt is keeping them quiet. I'm tired of encountering woman after woman diluted by the myth that she needs to be MORE of something: more qualified, more prepared… than she already is in order to share her ideas.” - Tara Mohr Millie & Wendy's Star Rating: 3.5 / 5 stars - We both loved the book but the themes have been exhausted over the past 9 years. Therefore, it didn't hit home as much as it would have had the book been read back when it was written in 2014. Get Different: Marketing That Can't Be Ignored by Mike Michalowicz (2021) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: Following your industry's “best practice” marketing creates white noise. If everyone else is doing it, your business won't stand out. We have to differentiate our marketing to stand out from the competition. Millie and Wendy's Star Rating: 4.5 / 5 stars - Millie loved this one so much that she listened to the audio and then bought the book to highlight and refer back. We both liked that this book had practical, actionable marketing ideas for small business owners. I'll Be Back: How to Get Customers to Come Back Again and Again by Shep Hyken (2021) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: Customer loyalty is not about a lifetime, it's about the next time every time. Hyken talks about marketing for loyalty vs. loyalty programs: We need our customers to want to choose us. We need to have our team on board with knowing why we can't just be mediocre. Millie & Wendy's Star Rating - 4 / 5 stars: Shep knows his audience (busy shop owners) and caters to them: this book is easy to read and has great chapter summaries. I interviewed Shep Hyken back in Episode 118. Perennial Seller: The Art of Making and Marketing Work That Lasts by Ryan Holiday (2017) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: We need to always be looking outside of our own industry for inspiration. Another takeaway that got us thinking was Holiday's idea of relationships as a platform that needs to be nurtured. Millie & Wendy's Star Rating - 4.5 / 5 stars: Lots of the ideas in this book were new ones that we hadn't heard before. 4000 Weeks by Oliver Burkeman (2021) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: If you live to the age of 80, you will live for 4000 weeks which, according to Millie is “terrifyingly and insultingly short.” This “time reminder” (not time management) book is all about embracing that limit and realizing we will never get everything done in our lives that we want to get done. We need to be intentional about what is important to us including rest and recovery. Millie's Star Rating - 5 / 5 stars: Millie reminds US readers to not judge this book by its cover. Wendy's Star Rating - 4.75 / 5 stars: I would give the audiobook 5 / 5, but found the paperback harder to pick up. How to Grow Your Small Business by Donald Miller (2023) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: This one is textbook-like, specific, all-action: A great how-to guide for someone who wants to start a small business. Miller uses an airplane analogy to break a business down into 6 parts which when we discussed in the mastermind, many had strong feelings. Millie and Wendy's Star Rating: 4 / 5 - Neither of us were in the space of needing a book like this at the time we read it, but it is great if it is the type of business book you are looking for. Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown (2014) Our thoughts/themes/takeaways: Millie loved the chapter on sleep and buffering: creating buffers in our lives to relieve stress. My big takeaway was the reminder that there are trade-offs with every decision and you have to be disciplined with decision making. “Simplify, eliminate, reduce. Do less but better.” - Greg McKeown About Millie and Mrs. Blackwell's Village Bookshop: Mrs. Blackwell is a specialist in non-fiction categories and stationery. She grew up on an apricot orchard in Central Otago but never really cared for the taste of the fruit. Mrs. Blackwell's Village Bookshop is an independent bookshop for inquisitive minds and romantic souls in Greytown, New Zealand. A few years ago I spent a weekend at a shamanic studies workshop learning about animal guides, I came home shared the details with my BFF, and rather than thinking I was totally out there, she got curious! Today I'm joined by my very own best friend! Elsie Larson, of the lifestyle blog A Beautiful Mess, is with us today to talk about her own integration into the woo. Elsie and I met when I lived in Nashville and in our friendship, while I'm the woo one, I've always known Elsie has some woo, woo witchy gifts. I've seen her manifest really incredible things over the course of our friendship - even when she didn't necessarily know she was doing it. Over the last few months, as Elsie and I planned for this episode, we talked about the list of things that she might be interested in from astrology readings to aura photography readings to reiki, and more. We've been having discussions about past lives and karma, kundalini yoga and acupuncture, psychic gifts, and intuitive wisdom and honestly, it's been so much fun for me seeing my BFF get into the things I love so much! This is the episode for you if you're new to the woo, or if you have a friend you'd like to share your woo practices with. Tara Mohr | Playing Big | Book Review by Lisa Woodruff On Mondays, I will be posting a podcast recording of previously recorded book reviews. These are books that have impacted me that I want to share with you. In June, I will share different books on mindset, and I again share how my own thinking has been influenced and even changed for the better by these new ideas. This week, I am reviewing Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead by Tara Mohr. I listened to this book in the car, and it felt like I was sitting with a friend who was one step ahead of me who shared her insights and wisdom on how she made it. So much of my own self improvement and self development is about goal setting. This book takes a radically different approach. It helped me think through and figure out what I was uniquely created to do and to play big in the world. Initially, it was intimidating to take on the responsibility to live out my purpose. She helped me figure out my limiting beliefs and my inner critic so that I could change my mindset. So much of what happens in my life is happening between my two ears. It helped me to think differently and to think bigger thoughts. It helped me to change my thoughts from a position of power. You can also watch this as a video review on YouTube. One of the most troubling trends among people who work for and in social change is the sense that you should not only do difficult (but rewarding!) work, but you should do it for scraps. It's a mindset held by people in and outside of the movement, and it's one of the reasons that it's so hard to be a force for change. Today's guest, Nell Edgington, wants to put an abundance mindset at the heart of social change. It's time to embrace not just the change we want in the world, but also, the people who help shepherd it into the world. The time is now for us to play bigger in our lives and businesses. We have so many gifts, talents, and strengths that we can use to change our world for the better. But we've been conditioned to play small. We've bought the lie of self-doubt. We've wrongly believed we aren't qualified enough to do the work we want to do. In this episode I talk with "Playing Big" author Tara Mohr about how we can get out of our own way and live our brilliance. BIO: Tara Mohr is an expert on women's leadership and wellbeing. Need a gift for the academic woman in your life, or ideas for what to put on your own wish list? In this episode of The Academic Woman Amplified, I’m sharing 5 of the books you should gift yourself or someone else to make this the best year yet for your professional life. The Slow Professor: Challenging the Culture of Speed in the Academy by Maggie Berg and Barbara K. Seeber The authors of The Slow Professor explain how academia is wrapped up in ‘fast capitalism’ and what that means. They point out patterns that show why we are being asked to do more and more with less and less time and how it leads to overwork and overwhelm. They give us ways to push back against these ideas and expectations, and point out the universal nature of these issues. I especially love the introduction and first chapter, so if you read nothing else (although it’s a short read, you can do it!), be sure to read those. Click here for a copy of The Slow Professor. Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done by Jon Acuff The big idea in this book is that we go about goal-setting in the wrong way, and therefore start a lot of things we have trouble finishing. The author talks about how to change this pattern, and finish the projects that are important to us. It’s funny, accessible, and full of practical wisdom. He gives concrete ideas for creating processes to set yourself up for success. Two of the methods are cutting our goals in half, and giving ourselves double the time to do them (sound familiar? He talks about a lot of the same things I do!). It’s not your average productivity book. It’s engaging and fun, and it’s a whole new way to view goals and goal-setting. Get a copy of Finish here. Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead by Tara Mohr This is an excellent book for women in academia, and any woman who is trying to make an impact and have her voice heard. The author connects feminist history and conditioning to our current experiences as women creators and leaders. She shows us why we may have fear around “playing big”, explains the different types of fear, and ideas for how to deal with our inner critics. She also makes an argument for why we should disconnect from both criticism and praise as we present our work and ideas to the world. (Hint: they both tell more about the person giving the feedback then they do about your work.) Get a copy of Playing Big here. Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport The author explains the difference between “deep work” and “shallow work” and why it’s important to stay in deep work as much as possible. Deep work as an academic would be writing and other creative, idea rich work. Shallow work is things like email, scheduling, and other maintenance tasks. Newport talks about the importance of boundary setting, and how to protect your deep work time. He also gives advice for how to accomplish more deep work. “When we get lost in the shallows...our energy is not going to the most useful place.” Get a copy of Deep Work here. The Positioning and Making of Female Professors: Pushing Career Advancement Open (Palgrave Studies in Gender and Education) edited by Rowena Murray and Denise Mifsud This book is a collection of chapters written by women in academia, including yours truly! The journeys and theories of success in academia are told in narrative form by each woman. My chapter is “Baby’s Taught Me How to do Academia: Crafting a Career in an Institution That Was Not Built for Mothers”. I tell the story of my career through the births of each of my 3 children, framed through a feminist and motherhood lens. Dr. Katrina Burrus, MCC interviews Tara Mohr and talks about practical wisdom for women who want to speak up, create, and lead. Tara is an expert on women's leadership and well-being. What does it mean to play big and why are so many women playing small? Why is confidence not the answer to self-doubt/inner critic? How do we unhook from praise and criticism and why is it important for women in particular to do so? What are the common mistakes we make around discovering our purpose and callings, and how can we start pursuing our most important callings, no matter what our circumstances? Who is Tara Mohr? Tara Mohr is an expert on women’s leadership and well-being. She is the author of Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead (PenguinRandomHouse), named a best book of the year by Apple’s iBooks. Tara is the creator and teacher of the global Playing Big leadership program for women, and of the Playing Big Facilitators Training for coaches, therapists, managers, and mentors. We all have that inner critic who wants us to believe “I can’t.” As a manager, you may also see that voice taking control of your team mates. So how do you quiet the inner critic and unleash the full potential of yourself and your colleagues? This week I speak with Tara Mohr, expert on women’s leadership and well-being. Tara is the author of Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead. Tara and I talk about different forms of fear, that annoying inner critic that holds us back, and how to respond to someone else’s inner critic when it’s holding them back. Join the Modern Manager community to get Tara's "Ten Rules For Brilliant Women Workbook” and other additional resources to support your learning journey. Subscribe to my newsletter to get episodes, articles and mini-guides delivered to your inbox. Key Takeaways: Playing big is not about striving more or working harder. It’s about getting in touch with and taking action on your own hopes and dreams. There are different kinds of fear. The first type 'pachad' is projecting the worst case scenario. This is the irrational fear that holds us back. The second type 'yirah' is the feeling of taking on more responsibility, getting an influx of energy, or being in the presence of the sacred. This is the fear that tells us we're on the right track. If you don't address your inner critic, it will sabotage you time and again. The inner critic works almost identically in all of us. When you do something that feels emotionally risky, the inner critic speaks up, trying to get us to retreat to emotional safety. Ask yourself, "What is the emotional risk I'm taking - failure, rejection, incompetence, uncertainty, etc." Once you've identified it, you can acknowledge it, have compassion for yourself, and decide to act from the part of you that wants to fulfill your dreams. Especially as women, if you do substantive work, it will be met with praise and criticism. When you get praise or criticism, what comes up for you? As managers, we get an up close view of our colleagues' inner critic. We often make the mistake of thinking our encouragement or confidence will make someone's inner critic will go away. But it actually can make someone more concerned. Have a conversation with your team about the inner critic. https://www.taramohr.com/quieting-the-inner-critic/ Being your authentic self, and sharing creative or innovative ideas often comes with self doubt. Confidence doesn't come with more experience when we are continuing to grow, take on more responsibility, and work at our learning edge. KEEP UP WITH TARA Book: Playing Big available on Amazon

Ever feel like you're not good enough or you're not *doing* enough? That other women are more successful, smarter, more creative, more beautiful, more accomplished, more effortless? Yes, me too! We've all been there, either in our personal or professional lives (or both). This episode delves deeply into this delicate subject of female competition, insecurity, and self-worth. I address what's really happening when your feelings of inadequacy, unworthiness, insecurity, and not-good-enoughness are triggered when you witness another person's success or milestone. We'll also explore how to look at this through a spiritual lens so we can celebrate and redefine other women's success as fuel for our own positive momentum. Join me! For Life on Purpose Episode #79, my guest is author and women’s leadership expert Tara Mohr, who gives women (and the men in her audience/community) the practical skills to voice and implement the changes they want to see—in themselves and in the world. Tara joined me for a great conversation on her new book Playing Big: Practical Wisdom for Women Who Want to Speak Up, Create, and Lead, which was named a best book of the year by Apple’s iBooks. It provides real, practical tools to help women quiet self-doubt, identify their callings, “unhook” from praise and criticism, unlearn counterproductive "good girl" habits, and begin taking bold action. “How did Playing Big come to be? I felt like all around me, I saw women playing small. Brilliant women with fabulous ideas, provocative questions, visions for how the world could be different and better. But those ideas and visions and questions weren't being voiced. And I was very attuned to that because I was struggling with that myself. I sent out a survey and asked my readers and asked them, 'What's the biggest challenge in your life?' and I listed a bunch of the challenges that we typically think loom so large in women's lives. But because of what I'd seen again and again, I added one more challenge to the list, 'I'm playing small.' When the survey responses came back, 'I'm playing small' was what the most women deemed the biggest challenge in their lives." About: Tara Mohr is an expert on women’s leadership and well-being.
