IN THIS MESSAGE JONATHON EDWARDS MAKES IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT THE NEW CREATION IS NOT A TWEAKED NATURAL MAN , BUT A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CREATURE WITH ITS OWN SET OF UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS: JUST AS A DOG AND CAT HAVE SOME SIMILARITIES, BOTH HAVE PAWS AND FUR, YET COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CREATURES, WITH DIFFERENT IMBRED ABILITIES, PERSONALITIES, & MANY OTHER DISTINGUISHABLE PECULIARITIES, & SUBTLETIES: UNDER THE HOOD THEY ARE DISTINCT CREATURES, POLES APART, AND LIKEWISE ARE WE AS TWEAKED NATURAL MAN AMERICANS, ARE POLES APRT FROM WE WHO ARE SPIRITUAL NEW CREATIONS. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? WE AS AMERICANS MUST COME TO REALIZE THAT SATAN IS THE ULTIMATE COUNTERFEITER, OFFERING US TO BE A TWEAKED NATURAL MAN BY OFFERING US A FASTFOOD FREEWILL JESUS, WHO MAY HELP US PULL OUT OF THE POLLUTIONS OF THE WORLD, BUT SATAN WANTS US IGNORANT OF THE FACT THAT THERE IS A BONDAGE OF THE WILL JESUS, IN WHICH WE MUST WAIT ON OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN TO REVEAL THE TRUE JESUS TO US, WHEREIN WE ARE NOW MADE A NEW AMERICAN SPIRITUAL MAN WHICH UNDER THE HOOD HAS CHARACTERS 100% DISTINGUISHABLE FROM OUR NATURAL MAN CHARACTERISTICS. LET US TAKE A FEW EXCEPTS FROM JONATHON EDWARDS SERMON:The SPIRIT of GOD acts in a VERY DIFFERENT manner in the one case from what he doth in the other. He may indeed act upon the mind of a natural man, BUT he acts in the mind of a SAINT as an INDWELLING VITAL PRINCIPAL. He ACTS upon the mind of an UNREGENERATE person as an EXTRINSIC , OCCASIONAL AGENT; for in acting upon them, he doth NOT UNITE himself to them; notwithstanding all his influences that they may be the subjects of, they are still sensual, having not the Spirit, Jude 19. But he unites himself with the mind of a saint, takes him for his temple, actuates and influences him as a new, supernatural principle of life and action. There is this difference, that the Spirit of God, in acting in the soul of a godly man, exerts and communicates himself there in his own proper nature. Holiness is the proper nature of the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit operates in the minds of the godly by uniting himself to them, and living in them, and exerting his own nature in the exercise of their faculties. The Spirit of God may act upon a creature, and yet not in acting communicate himself. The Spirit of God may act upon inanimate creatures; as the Spirit moved upon the face of the waters in the beginning of the creation;[Pg 26] so the Spirit of God may act upon the minds of men many ways, and communicate himself no more than when he acts upon an inanimate creature. For instance, he may excite thoughts in them, may assist their natural reason and understanding, or may assist other natural principles, and this without any union with the soul, but may act, as it were, as upon an external object. But as he acts in his holy influences and spiritual operations, he acts in a way of peculiar communication of himself; so that the subject is thence denominated spiritual. This spiritual light primarily consists in the former of these, viz., a real sense and apprehension of the divine excellency of things revealed in the word of God. A spiritual and saving conviction of the truth and reality of these things arises from such a sight of their divine excellency and glory; This light, and this only, has its fruit in an universal holiness of life. No merely notional or speculative understanding of the doctrines of religion will ever bring to this. But this light, as it reaches the bottom of the heart, and changes the nature, so it will effectually dispose to an universal obedience. It shows God's worthiness to be obeyed and served. It draws forth the heart in a sincere love to God, which is the only principle of a true, gracious and universal obedience. And it convinces of the reality of those glorious rewards that God has promised to them that obey him.

What Happened Next: a podcast about newish books

My guest on this episode is Terry Fallis. Terry's first novel, The Best Laid Plans, which began as a podcast and was initially self-published, won the Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour and was re-published by McClelland & Stewart in 2008. That book went on to win the 2011 edition of Canada Reads and was adapted as a CBC Television series and a stage musical. His next two novels, The High Road and Up and Down, were finalists for the Leacock Medal. And In 2015, he won the prize a second time, for his fourth book, No Relation. His other novels include Poles Apart, One Brother Shy, Albatross, and Operation Angus, and were all national bestsellers. Terry's most recent novel is A New Season, which was published by McClelland & Stewart in 2023. In its review of A New Season, The Winnipeg Free Press said, “It's about grief, friendship, family and, most of all, love, with humour taking a backseat for a change.” Terry and I talk about those early days of podcasting, about why, given all his success, he only recently retired from his day job to focus on writing full time, and about how readers and critics very often mistake comic novels for frivolous ones.   Terry Fallis: terryfallis.com Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Heroic explorer Frederick Cook has just returned from the very roof of the world, the first man to reach the North Pole. Or so he says. Journalist Philip Gibbs has been watching him, and he's convinced he's lying. When Gibbs publishes that belief, he stands alone. Cook has a gripping manner and an excellent reputation: his winning tale must be true. Diners boo Gibbs at a restaurant, newspapers publish sly-looking caricatures of him, and he even receives threats of violence. But then, everything changes. We often think of polarisation as a modern problem — but the story of Cook and Gibbs has much to teach us here. For a full list of sources for this episode, please visit timharford.com. Though his contract has come to an end he is still carrying the weight of being a 'role model' for the next generation of performers, a title he takes quite seriously and is kind of obsessed with. The boys then dissect Spare, the new memoir from Prince Harry, though they already know an awful lot about the contents of the book by seeing things online and against their own will. They take a look at the most chaotic aspects of the book and question why a man of his age uses words like todger and gan gan. No need for it. Has activism become the accepted norm? What role has social media played in this? Should we have always practised activism but, instead, been blindly accepting when we should have been challenging? Does the forceful response of the few to someone's views potentially lead to a cancel culture?   It's important that, when we think about the world of communication in business and the polarisation of society, we talk about how aggressive conversations can feel. We often discuss alignment when working with leaders and different teams: the worry is that this is becoming increasingly difficult.   To illustrate, we cite recent controversial topics. We also look at the rise in slacktivism: Defined by the United Nations as when people “support a cause by performing simple measures” but “are not truly engaged or devoted to making a change”.   Resources: Podcast S4 E8: How thinking Differently can create belonging https://calmedgedrebels.com/how-thinking-differently-can-create-belonging/ Blog:  Seek a second opinion https://calmedgedrebels.com/seek-a-second-opinion/ Slacktivism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slacktivism Podcast S4 E11: Living and sticking to your values https://calmedgedrebels.com/living-and-sticking-to-your-values/ Matthew Syed article The Times: In a land with 14 tribes named in its anthem, we were played like a violin https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/in-a-land-with-14-tribes-named-in-its-anthem-we-were-played-like-a-violin-z9zqz3n0s Unleash your inner rebel conference https://www.innerrebelconference.com/ Poles Apart by Laura Osborne, Alison Goldsworthy and Alexandra Chesterfield:   https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/111/1119814/poles-apart/9781847942975.html

Alexandra Chesterfield is co-author of the book Poles Apart: Why People Turn Against Each Other, and How to Bring Them Together. It's a look at political polarization in our society, how we've gotten to this point, and what we can do about it. Jonathan Haidt called it "A fascinating read, which will help anyone who wants to step out of the polarization cycle and become part of the solution." Alex has a masters degree in Cognitive and Decision Science, and she's been using that background to apply insights from behavioral science in real world settings. She was also an elected Councillor in Guildford for the Conservative Party. Her co-authors are Laura Osborne, a professional communicator, and Alison Goldsworthy, who helped to create the first depolarization course at Stanford. Together they host the Changed My Mind podcast, in which they interview eminent thinkers about topics on which they've changed their mind. This conversation has two parts. Alison's book Poles Apart has just been published – she joins Emma to talk about what she learnt from that experience. Nobody likes paying parking fines, but would you go through a 5 year battle to beat one? Linda Edwards from Greater Manchester did just that - all over a £1 parking ticket she couldn't pay because the machine was broken. She joins Emma to explain why she stuck with it. Yesterday's reshuffle worked out pretty well for women in the Conservative party. Priti Patel stays in post, Liz Truss has been promoted to Foreign Secretary while retaining her Women and Equalities brief, and Nadine Dorries has been promoted to Culture Secretary. Women now occupy half of the great offices of state for the second time - the first being when Theresa May made Amber Rudd Home Secretary in 2016. But does any of that actually matter? Emma is joined to discuss by Sebastian Payne, author of Broken Heartlands: A Journey Through Labour's Lost England and Whitehall editor for the Financial Times, and Camilla Tominey, Associate Editor at the Telegraph.

Parties are the engines of democratic politics. But they also pit us apart as people and polities. So what are the new ways of political polarization, and what can we do to tackle them? Alison Goldsworthy, CEO of the Depolarization Project and former Lib Dem deputy chair, and behavioural scientist Alexandra Chesterfield are two of the authors of Poles Apart and the brains behind the Changed My Mind podcast. They talk to Ros Taylor about deconstructing confirmation bias, why facts and stats can cause unintentional polarization - and how Jewish family dinners helped deradicalize a member of the KKK…“Polarisation isn't always about the extremes. It's about how radically you hold on to your identity.” - Alison Goldsworthy.“It makes us feel psychologically uncomfortable, even pained, to change our minds.” – Alexandra Chesterfield.“Reputationally, it doesn't fit the perception of a leader to be inconsistent.” – Alexandra Chesterfield.“In this government, people are promoted on the basis of loyalty, not talent.” - Alison Goldsworthy.“The odds are that you change your opinions based on feelings and allegiances, not facts.” - Alison Goldsworthy.“There's an awful lot you can hold Nick Clegg and the coalition government responsible for. The decision to hold a referendum is not one of them.” - Alison Goldsworthy.“We saw a member of the KKK, exposed to so-called scientific education, changed his mind.” – Alexandra Chesterfield.Presented by Ros Taylor. Episode 38 covers the fourteenth Pink Floyd studio album, 1994’s “The Division Bell.” The second Pink Floyd album recorded without founding member Roger Waters, The Division Bell was written mostly by guitarist and singer David Gilmour and keyboardist Richard Wright. It features Wright's first lead vocal on a Pink Floyd album since The Dark Side of the Moon (1973). Gilmour's fiancée, novelist Polly Samson, co-wrote many of the lyrics, which deal with themes of communication. It was the last Pink Floyd album recorded with Wright, who died in 2008. Do you believe in the stars? Well, I can see that they are there. But it depends what you mean by believing in them. We don't subscribe to the notion that your destiny is fixed by the celestial spheres. Yet, confusingly, there seem to be some sources indicating that there is influence from above, based on when we were born. Which is it? One thing is for sure. If the future would be so predictable, we could prevent crime and negative behaviours. We would know not to do things which backfire. But effectively we would lose our free choice, aware of what the future holds. Unlike those investigating the famous case of the zodiac killer. People could not understand how he was not caught. I mean, after all, the signs were all there... The truth is, that the clue can be found in the fact that sailors always relied on the Pole Star - and its apparent immobility - for guidance. Since it is fixed over the North Pole throughout the night and throughout the year. Apparently unlike other stars. However, it is like other stars. We just don't see its movement. Our perception is distorted. That distorted perception is an advantage and a disadvantage. Yes, it guides. But if we think so rigidly and with such a fixed mindset, we cannot grow. Don't be that guy. Life is not one fixed path. You can still planet.

The unknown tale of cold war communist Poland's unlikely love affair with electronic music. Robert Worby finds out Warsaw was a beacon of musical freedom behind the iron curtain. It was here that the remarkable Polish Radio Experimental Studio was established in 1957, and this was the first electronic music studio in the Eastern Bloc and the fourth in Europe. This futuristic facility was at the cutting edge of modern music, and was a serious rival for existing studios in Paris, Milan, and Cologne in the West. But at a time when contemporary music was viewed with deep suspicion in the satellite states of the Soviet Union, and Warsaw itself had been destroyed during WWII, a shiny new electronic music studio hardly looked like a priority. But when Stalin's murderous legacy was condemned by the new Soviet leadership in 1956, a loosening of the Eastern European communist stranglehold began. Uniquely in Poland the church and intellectuals struck an unparalleled bargain with the Polish authorities, allowing each to rub along with the other, as long as they agreed to keep their nose out of one another's business. This suited the Communist People's Polish Republic who were keen to distance themselves from Moscow, and supporting the Polish Radio Experimental Studio helped promote a positive image of what appeared to be a progressive society, not only to itself, but to the world. Now a new generation of Poles have re-discovered the rich musical archive of the Polish Radio Experimental Studio, that created the sounds of the future, not in spite of, but because of the complex postwar history of the People's Polish Republic. That was the word from Warsaw as the European Commission launched an investigation into some of the decisions taken by the new right-wing government in Poland; the authorities in India meet on Monday to evaluate the controversial traffic experiment in Delhi which was aimed at reducing pollution; the latest consumer spending figures in France offer little evidence that an economic recovery is underway -- but in Toulouse some people know where to get their food for free; lawyers for the Mexican drug lord known as 'el Chapo' have started to prepare a case against his extradition to the US -- some in Mexico would anyway prefer to see him face justice there. And there's something to sing about in northern Norway - after six weeks their polar night season has come to an end, the sun has finally made an appearance and it's something to sing about!
