Olly and Marlon are joined by the Marxist academic and activist Stathis Kouvelakis for an in depth discussion on how the far right rose to prominence in France, the aftershocks of the 2005 EU constitutional referendum, race, class and the strategy of the left and why LFI is better than Syriza. Stathis is on the editorial board of the communist review Contretemps, trains LFI cadres in Marxism at Institut La Boetie and was part of the leadership of Syriza.

There's so much incident it unfortunately overshadows our Shield alum this week, Catherine Dent. And she's doing things with her role. She's trying the Texan accent!

With special -- and returning! -- guest Chris Sexton Fletcher, Anna and Derek discuss the connection between insects and acrobatic ability (none), the kinda sorta Stathis redemption arc and much more during their discussion of the Cronenberg horror classic The Fly (1986). Connect with '80s Movie Montage on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram! It's the same handle for all three... @80smontagepod.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/80sMontagePodTwitter: https://twitter.com/80sMontagePodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/80smontagepod/Anna Keizer and Derek Dehanke are the co-hosts of ‘80s Movie Montage. The idea for the podcast came when they realized just how much they talk – a lot – when watching films from their favorite cinematic era. Their wedding theme was “a light nod to the ‘80s,” so there's that, too. Both hail from the Midwest but have called Los Angeles home for several years now. Anna is a writer who received her B.A. in Film/Video from Columbia College Chicago and M.A. in Film Studies from Chapman University. Her dark comedy short She Had It Coming was an Official Selection of 25 film festivals with several awards won for it among them. Derek is an attorney who also likes movies. It is a point of pride that most of their podcast episodes are longer than the movies they cover.Chris Sexton Fletcher is a film director, screenwriter, and assistant professor at State College of Florida. His award-winning short film, THE PUNISHMENT (2021), explores the physical and emotional fallout of a Scottish gangland punishment beating. On a (slightly) lighter note, Chris is currently in post-production on SHARPS, the story of just how far one woman will go to get a wad of $100 bills out of a medical waste disposal container.
It's the film that turned Jeff Goldblum into an icon. A quirky icon, but an icon nonetheless. The Chumps dissect Geena Davis's genius "reaction acting," Seth Brundle's loft, why director David Cronenberg played the doctor in the film, and why this is arguably the most pro-choice movie of all time. PLUS: Luke has a hissy-fit over Daemond Targaryen, and Corrye almost kills himself with a new coffee mug.

Stephen Stathis last joined us in 2018 when he shared the evolution of Children's Health Queensland's gender clinic, which at that time had only been in operation for about 12 months. At Showcase 2020, Stephen was joined by colleague Olivia Donaghy to bring us up to speed on how the clinic has changed and to provide updates on other advancements in youth mental health. Olivia explains that given there was no multidisciplinary gender service before the establishment of the clinic in 2017, the first few years of the service saw an exponential growth in referrals. “The main challenge has been managing that growth, but at the same time it has been wonderful to provide the service to more than 600 families.” Stephen said before the service there was extremely long waiting lists and no dedicated place or service for these families to go. “It's a place for them, a place to be heard, and a place for them to attain the necessary assessment and treatment they need,” he said. With families attending the clinic coming from right across Queensland, Stephen highlighted that the value of the Clinical Excellence Showcase was its statewide focus. “Showcases like this are very important to showcase what we do, not just to the broader community but to clinicians right across the state because it allows them to understand what we do here. It's a statewide service and a large proportion [of families] come from regional and rural Queensland.” Learn more For more information on Children's Health Queensland's Gender Clinic and Statewide Service, visit their website. New Books at SOF/Heyman: a podcast featuring audio from events at Columbia University, and interviews with the speakers and authors. In The Perils of the One, Stathis Gourgouris offers a philosophical anthropology that confronts the legacy of “monarchical thinking”: the desire to subjugate oneself to unitary principles and structures, whether political, moral, theological, or secular. In wide-ranging essays that are at once poetic and polemical, intellectual and passionate, Gourgouris reads across politics and theology, literary and art criticism, psychoanalysis and feminism in a critique of both political theology and the metaphysics of secularism. He engages with a range of figures from the Apostle Paul and Trinitarian theologians, to La Boétie, Schmitt, and Freud, to contemporary thinkers such as Clastres, Said, Castoriadis, Žižek, Butler, and Irigaray. At once a broad perspective on human history and a detailed examination of our present moment, The Perils of the One offers glimpses of what a counterpolitics of autonomy would look like from anarchic subjectivities that refuse external ideals, resist the allure of command and obedience, and embrace otherness.

This week on Jersey XYZ, Stathis Theodoropoulos is joined by New Jersey Policy Perspective’s Senior Policy Analyst, Sheila Reynertson, and New Jersey Policy Perspective’s Director of Communications, Louis Di Paolo, to discuss Gov Phil Murphy's second budget. It is May and we are a few months into NJ's budget season. With Sheila, Louis and Stathis, we break down what the budget does and doesn’t do for the state, and what it means for our state's fiscal health and for education, transit, and other important priorities.

This week’s episode takes us on a journey of transformation. We are witness to what happens when a man and an insect are fused on a molecular level. We saw David Cronenberg's The Fly and we’ll never be able to get some of what we saw out of our heads. This is one of the best body-horror films of all time. The movie follows a scientist that is on the verge of perfecting teleportation and a reporter that wants to share the story with the world. When the scientist tests the teleporter on himself, something goes wrong and it is time to “be afraid...be very afraid.” This film has a very small cast, but each of the main actors plays their role very well and adds to the overall story. Why was Seth so upset that Veronica was going to write a story about his project? Why was Seth so eager to test the telepod on himself after seeing what happened to the other baboons? Is Stathis the best creep in movie history? Does Stathis live in that office or just work there? Why doesn’t Veronica change the locks on her doors? Will we ever get a spin-off movie that focuses on Stathis’s struggle to adapt to living without a hand and a foot? Thank you for all of the love you continue to show us. Please rate and review the podcast wherever you get it and if you like the show, share it with your friends.
This week on Jersey XYZ, Stathis sits down three veterans of the political arena. He is joined by the mayor candidate of Lambertville, Julia Fahl, Democratic Strategist, Anne Sciaino, and the Executive Director of the Waterfront Project, Rebecca Symes to talk about the Century of the Woman. We tap into in the lived the experience of Julia, Anne, and Rebecca to understand the lived experience of a women running for office. With the elections of 2018 a week away, we explore some important themes: Why are more women running in the this election than in elections in the past. What is the difference between a veteran women in politics running for office compared to a candidate diving in for the first time. What are the barriers that women candidates come across when they run. How do party structures engage with women candidates. What double standards do women candidates deal with. And much more…

This week on Jersey XYZ, Stathis sits with the Executive Director of NJ Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Patricia Teffenhart, and the Assistant Director Robert Baran, to continue a important dialogue on sexual violence. This being of the most important conversations that we have on Jersey XYZ, we discuss with the NJCASA team: Who are the hard to reach survivors of sexual violence, and how to reach them. What barriers certain communities face. How to give hard to reach survivors a voice. How our legal system, and police officers can better adopt to serve the needs of survivors of sexual violence. What laws Gov Phil Murphy passed to address issues around sexual violence, and what battles are ahead. And much more...
This week on Jersey XYZ, Stathis, Kavita, Brian, and Ronald dive into what is happening in New Jersey this week. Gov. Phil Murphy just signed into law a bill that allows for automatic voting registration. We break down how this works and what this would mean for communities across the state. We later discuss the lawsuit against the Trump Administration against the question of asking about citizenship on the upcoming 2020 Census. We talk about why states are suing and what would a question like this would mean for Federal funding and representation if the question were to stay. Finally, we talk about how NJ will allow DREAMERS to get financial aid for their higher education. We breakdown how DREAMERS are intertwined with our success of our state, and how giving them the opportunity to fund their higher education is a win win.
