There has been queer subtext (or just plain text) in monster/horror stories going back for centuries, and it is only more prevalent since thew advent of cinema (looking directly at you, Dracula's Daughter), so it's high time we celebrate Pride. In this episode, the Monstie Mommies combine their powers for the first time to just absolutely steamroll & bully James, as Gary had the forethought to be "sick" this episode, and they talk all about the Karen Kusama/Diablo Cody sapphic classic Jennifer's Body. You can (sometimes) find Red on Instagram here, and you can probably find Alessia (even less) here. You can find the Monstie Men on Instagram & check out all of their links here. You can watch James on Geekscape News (usually a couple of times a week) and the Tutorial Guild: a Dungeon Crawler Carl Tunnel, alongside Katie, Jefferson & Aaron, monthly. We were tired of talking about depressing military losses and bureaucratic collapses, so today Evita and I decided to bring you a cheerful, lighthearted special about something universally joyful: grocery shopping in 2026 Russia!...It goes down from there.Welcome to a tour of a culinary "shitutopia." In this special episode of The Eastern Border, Evita and I perform a deep-dive regulatory and macroeconomic audit on the Russian import-substitution food economy. From AI-hallucinated marketplace listings and 239-ruble bone-paste sausages to a blatant "Red Herring" legal scam, we break down exactly how the isolation economy has turned the Russian supermarket into a predatory dumping ground for toxic, unregulated industrial waste. We look at "Evita's Theorem" of gray-market exploitation, calculate the devastating $12 billion shrinkflation black hole, explore the tragic "Mayonnaise Delusion," and break down the absolute madness of a single plastic Kinder Joy egg costing 1.5% of a provincial firefighter's entire monthly salary.Grab a drink, look closely at your own dinner plate, and welcome to the illusionary calorie economy.

Thi Nguyen (Website | Wikipedia | X), associate professor of philosophy at the University of Utah and a specialist in the philosophy of games, the philosophy of technology, and the theory of value. In our first conversation on Future Fossils, we explored his writing on games as an art form in which agency is the medium. His new book, The Score: How to Stop Playing Somebody Else's Game, takes that logic further and reveals the games that bind society together with institutional metrics — one of the most powerful, pervasive, and invisible technologies of all time.Thi's thesis hinges on the observation that a metric is never just a number. It's a value judgment dressed up in the costume of objectivity, a down-sampling of our richly multidimensional world into proxies that can travel efficiently between strangers. And with every subsequent compression of meaning into portable, scalable, decontextualized form, our metrics progressively displace place itself — the nuance of our singular, non-fungible lives — and define what we can even aspire to be.Thi calls this kind of cognitive enclosure “value capture”: when an institution uses metrics to coordinate across distance and difference, it engineers a context-invariant kernel that can travel between strangers without requiring shared background, history, or care. The power of these abstractions is real. So is their violence. We can use metrics instrumentally, holding them lightly as useful fictions. But more often than not we forget things like GPA, GDP, or KPIs started life as somebody else's choices — that someone, somewhere, decided what to count and what to ignore — and we begin to inhabit the metric as if it were reality itself: optimizing our lives, desires, and identities for a scoring system we didn't author and may never have consciously accepted.Games show us another way. By Thi's account, games are a medium for the transmission of different kinds of agency, a technology for practicing the very awareness that metrics erode: that metrics are cultural constructs, and we still have some choice in what to value. When you're playing, you know you're playing. The magic circle of the game space is a low-stakes laboratory for inhabiting a different set of values, and therefore different selves. Therein lies a whole philosophy of freedom, and in a moment when the infrastructure of meaning-making is being rebuilt from the ground up, recovering our capacity to see the game of modern life as a game may be the most important skill we have. But there's a twist that takes us beyond the scope of Thi's book and into the question that's been keeping me up at night for the last two years. With AI, we've tunneled so far into abstraction that we may have come out the other side. Large language models now allow us to translate between different perspectives, to ground insights from our aggregate intelligence in personal detail. If you've ever used a chatbot to explain physics to you as a specific human being, based on your own data vault, and in the style of a specific author, you know what I mean. Socrates' critique of written language in Phaedrus — that it couldn't “read the room” or know its audience — feels somewhat less relevant in an age when the generation of text is powered by systems with such a high-dimensional and granular view of things that we are no longer bound to one canonical version of anything. Is AI the apotheosis of our enclosure by institutional metrics, or is it the medium through which we are finally able to take a post-ironic stance on the constraints of modern life? It's starting to look like a world in which everything is a metric and everything is a game. And just maybe, that means we can renegotiate these tradeoffs…as long as we don't take ourselves too seriously. And with this, we circle back around to the core question of this project: As we approach the horizon where anything is possible, what should be? Who do you want to be, and what games will make you that person?Chapters00:00 Episode Teaser03:50 Intro Monologue09:11 Meet C. ONE EYE ON THE WORLD — Monocle, the brainchild of the expat Canadian magazine maker, Tyler Brûlé, was born in early 2007, a relatively awful year for the magazine business, not to mention the entire world. In that year alone, more than 100 print magazines folded—or, as Wikipedia terms it, were “dis-established”—among them: Life (yet again), Premiere, Red Herring, House & Garden, Jane, Child, and Business 2.0. Months later, the global economy was hit by the Great Recession. But Brûlé was coming out from under a rather lengthy non-compete agreement with Time Inc., after selling his previous startup, Wallpaper*, to the American media giant, and he was desperate to get back to the newsroom. Given the times, and the stream of fading print publications, one could judge Brûlé's resolve as “madness,” as Don Quixote cried in the opening clip. Digital was all the rage, the iPad was knocking on the door, and the radiation of the frenzied dotcom meltdown was still slowly killing legacy media. “Madness”? Not if you know Tyler Brûlé. In his world, “life as it should be” is rich—a morning espresso in a bustling cafe with a crisp newspaper written and edited in the romance language of your choice, sorting out weekends skiing the Alps or lounging on the Med while riding the night train to Vienna. And then there's the print—not only the magazine itself, printed on “upwards of nine different paper stocks, crammed with extremely niche articles about carbon-neutral airlines in Costa Rica and sleek Afghan restaurants in Dubai,” but also special edition newspapers, coffee table books, and Monocle-approved travel guides. (Someone forgot to tell Brûlé and his brilliant team of collaborators that print is dead). In a media culture traditionally obsessed with scale at any cost, Monocle's modest 100,000 circulation belies a thriving multi-media juggernaut that confidently ignores the lure of social media. “We're in a very fortunate position that we're an independent publisher,” says Brûlé, “and we don't have the commercial pressures of a big parent. And those commercial pressures can be two-fold: One is cost savings, but the other pressures are to go and chase after every new trend.” In fact, Brûlé thinks of Monocle as a family business. “We don't set out to be pioneers, but also we're a family company, and we can choose to do things quickly if we want to.” That same culture has manufactured the pressure to establish one's entrepreneurial cred. You're not the editor, you're the founding editor, the founding creative director, the founding director. But when asked about how he thinks of and refers to himself, Brûlé answers simply: “If I think about ‘What do I do?' I'm a journalist. I'm out to be a witness. I'm out to absorb, I'm out to interpret, and I'm out to communicate. A print-centric media phenomenon, created as a family business, led by a journalist. Surprising? Not for someone who's been building a life—as it should be. — This episode is made possible by our friends at Commercial Type and Freeport Press. A production of Magazeum LLC ©2021–2025
China’s biotech rise has been a persistent concern for federal health leaders, Congress, and many biopharma executives. But to Roivant CEO Matt Gline, the country is nothing more than a red herring. In this week’s episode of "The Top Line," Fierce Biotech’s Darren Incorvaia chats with Gline about China, artificial intelligence and the exciting year ahead for Roivant’s lead asset brepocitinib. John and Jim examine the third Trial of a Time Lord story featuring the Doctor's bold defense strategy: presenting evidence from his own future, complete with a new companion who somehow makes Perry instantly forgettable. The Gutsy Introduction: The hosts examine the unprecedented decision to introduce Mel (Bonnie Langford) not at the beginning of her travels but as if she's already been with the Doctor for ages. Discussion covers the instant chemistry between Colin Baker and Bonnie Langford, Mel's agency and enthusiasm as a breath of fresh air, and why this pairing works despite unconventional storytelling. Evidence From the Future?: Jim questions the trial's fundamental logic - why would Time Lords accept evidence that hasn't happened yet? The hosts debate whether showing the Doctor "gets better" in the future undermines the entire prosecution while simultaneously revealing he survives the trial. Discussion includes the questionable legal framework and the Valeyard's surprisingly weak objections. The Bonnie Langford Factor: Extensive background on why casting Bonnie Langford was considered both a coup and a joke. The hosts explore her reputation as "England's Shirley Temple" (not in a good way), comparisons to Justin Bieber or Tiffany suddenly joining Star Trek, and how Pip and Jane Baker deliberately wrote against audience expectations. Coverage includes the infamous scream count, the F-key requirement matching the theme music sting, and whether Mel's voice takes getting used to. Production Crisis Mode: John details the chaos behind the scenes - Eric Saward's resignation leaving no script editor credited, JNT forced to take over script development, the Starlog interview controversy, JNT's attempted resignation (initially accepted with the caveat he fire Colin Baker), and morale at all-time lows with no pickup news. The Space Liner Mystery: Discussion of the murder mystery setup aboard Hyperion 3, Honor Blackman's casting (playing someone in her 40s while in her 60s), the Love Boat-style passenger introductions, the Mogarians and their translator issues, and Commodore Travers recognizing the Sixth Doctor from an adventure viewers never saw. The Vervoid Problem: Both hosts agree the plant-based menace suffers from unfortunate design - looked fine in studio as tulips but became laughable on screen. Jim argues the human crimes prove more interesting than the creature threat. Discussion covers Pip Baker's research into plant hormones, the effective reveal scene in shadows, Professor Lasky's Thing from Another World-inspired death, and the wilting death sequence. Red Herrings and Subplots: Examination of dropped plot threads including the Demeter seeds going nowhere (despite the Doctor eating one), Ruth the plant-infested woman's wasted potential, the Mogarian hijacking subplot as acknowledged "sideshow," and whether these diversions work or waste time. The Chemistry Question: Both hosts marvel at how Baker and Langford perform as if they'd been together for years. Coverage includes Mel not being told to "stay here," treatment as the Doctor's equal rather than damsel, her computer programmer background never materializing, and Pease Pottage references connecting to nursery rhymes. Design and Effects: Appreciation for the art deco lamp-inspired Hyperion 3 design (compared to Empire Strikes Back's Cloud City inspiration), the elaborate video game homage possibly recycled from "Nightmare Fair" development, black hole interpretation, and bodies stacked like cordwood pushing graphic boundaries. The Genocide Charge: The Valeyard's closing accusation transforms the trial as Article 7 of Gallifreyan Law makes no exceptions - destroying an entire species constitutes genocide regardless of necessity. The hosts question whether this charge sticks and what it means for the finale. Behind the Sofa Confusion: Colin, Bonnie, and Nicola on one couch with Matthew Waterhouse, Fraser Hines, and Mark Strickson on another - the three men initially think the plant-infested woman is Nicola Bryant and wonder "what happened to Peri." Coming Up Next: Patreon Exclusive (Monday): More Doctor Who music, Memory TARDIS spin with random First Five Doctors story recall, the three-part comic "Time Bomb," and news about recent collection release controversies and RTD decisions raising hackles. Main Feed Episode (Friday for Patreon, Following Saturday for All): The two-part finale "The Ultimate Foe" wraps up Colin Baker's era. John handles narration and promises Jim will thank him for NOT handling this one. Fandom generally dislikes it - meaning Jim will probably love it. Red Herring joins James as both Werewolf Winter and our coverage of the Ginger Snaps trilogy comes to an end with 2004's prequel, Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning. PREVIEW FOR LATER TODAY Guest: Elizabeth Peek. Peek discusses the investigation into Federal ReserveChairman Jerome Powell regarding building construction costs. She labels the $700 million budget overage a "red herring," arguing it distracts from more critical debates concerning the Federal Reserve's future independence and the president's upcoming choice for leadership in the springtime.1914 FEDERAL RESERVE BOARD
BEST OF TST: The United States is close to declaring war on Venezuela. Well, sort of; the President said he won't actually seek a declaration from Congress and instead just “kill people that are bringing drugs into our country.” Just prior, however, the White House gave Maduro an ultimatum to flee Venezuela. So are we killing people with drugs on boats or orchestrating regime change? The 2024 US DOJ-DEA National Drug Threat Assessment literally did not even mention Venezuela. The only recent major indictment of the country came from a Presidential Memorandum on September 15, 2024, which declared several countries as having failed in “their obligations under international counternarcotics agreements.” Ironically, the President made “null” and “void” all “documents, proclamations, Executive Orders, Memorandums, or Contracts,” signed under former President Biden's autopen, essentially erasing the declaration that Venezuela had any connection serious to drug trafficking. But for drugs like fentanyl, nearly 100% of it comes through Mexico. One would be confused in learning this and then trying to figure out why the White House has targeted Venezuela in the name of those same drugs. Remember, Mexico refused to assist in cleaning up the cartels under Claudia Sheinbaum, and it is her ethno-state, Israel, which is verifiably behind training the cartels, arming them, and facilitating through HIAS mass human trafficking. The White House is also saying that Venezuela is a host of illegal immigration, though Mexico and several other countries play a far greater role. This has people thinking that the whole issue is about oil, something the US State Department has denied. But perhaps it is about Sheinbaum. While Javier Milei of Argentina, who is also Jewish, just launched the Isaac Accords to strengthen political, economic and cultural cooperation between Israel and Latin America, Maduro of Venezuela, who himself has Jewish heritage, has consistently been condemning Israel as holding “an ideology more dangerous than Nazism.” He has accused Jews of controlling his opposition and the media, the same media now telling the public we have to stop Venezuelan drug trafficking by regime change only. Or perhaps, Maduro, who is Jewish, is playing the role of turning over the resource rich country to the US-Israel alliance, hence why he was given the option to flee. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. John talks about the Supreme Court blocking Trump from deploying the National Guard to Chicago, but the National Guard in Louisiana have been called up for an upcoming deployment to New Orleans. He also discusses the DOJ releasing more files on Jeffrey Epstein, including an alleged letter to Larry Nassar. Then, he welcomes back Rev. Barry Lynn who is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and a former executive director for Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. And closing it up, John jokes with "Comedy Daddy" Keith Price and they take listener calls about pop culture, current politics, and the year in review.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
December 24th: Robert LeCompte Killed (2009) A red herring can completely throw off a case. On December 24th 2009 a man was brutally slain in a place where, up until that moment, he felt safe and welcome. The United States is close to declaring war on Venezuela. Most quantum conundrums are about time, the multiverse, and dimensions, but if you want to dig into the "official version" versus conspiracy theories regarding the JFK assassination, you can become quantumly articulate about Kennedy, Oswald, and the massive time manipulations that happened in 1963. In a true simulation, we may open the door for other factors to come into play, and that is the simultaneous time structures within many patterns and outcomes. Magic Bullets and Red Herrings encourage pseudo-debates and confusion, and are a rather dumb “limited hangout,” a strategy used by intelligence agencies to dangle some truth to divert attention from the core facts of a case they are desperate to conceal. This is where real competitive advantage lies.Measure what matters: AI offers new opportunities to track touchpoints across the customer journey, finally making ROI and attribution measurable with greater accuracy.Change requires courage: Creativity, experimentation, and risk-taking are essential to unlocking AI's potential, leaders must champion innovation even when outcomes are uncertain.Quotes“This is the biggest opportunity of our generation. We've been told that a balanced budget is the gold standard for nonprofit leadership — but what if that “balance” is actually hiding the cracks? In this episode, I break down why a neat, balanced budget isn't the safety net we think it is — and how it can actually create false confidence while your organization is already struggling behind the scenes.I'll walk you through a shift in mindset: from backward-looking bookkeeping to forward-thinking design. Whether you're building your first budget or revisiting old assumptions, this episode is about making sure your budget is more than a math exercise — it's a tool for resilience, clarity, and impact. What You'll Learn:Why a “balanced” budget can mask burnout, fragility, and slow collapseThe hidden costs most leaders forget to account for — and how to fix thatHow to shift from reactive budgeting to designing for the future you're building3 Key Takeaways:Balance isn't strategy. A budget that “works on paper” can still fail in practice.Invisible costs break budgets. Staff time, compliance, and leadership bandwidth need to be named and funded.Your budget is a design tool. It should reflect the organization you want to build — not just the one you've survived in.Step-by-Step: How to Build a Future-Oriented BudgetStop budgeting from last year's numbers. That just keeps you locked in survival mode. Use budgeting to design where you're going.Name the invisible costs. Include staff time for reporting, systems, and leadership — not just direct program expenses.Build for capacity, not just delivery. Fund the infrastructure that supports your work: technology, workflows, leadership development.Challenge false assumptions. Don't let beliefs like “we can't afford it” or “funders won't support that” dictate your priorities.Use your budget to declare what matters. If it's not in the budget, it's not part of the plan. At the moment of Israel's independence in 1948, its Arab neighbors rejected its statehood. Today, Israel's defenders say the Jewish state must be allowed to defend itself from Hamas to ensure its survival. In this episode, political scientist Ian Lustick says the question is a category error. Rather than focusing on the state, people may ask whether they have "a duty to respect and defer to the decisions Israeli governments make" under the Zionist regime that has existed since '48. Send us a textPlaywright Stuart Brown streamed into Playwright's Spotlight for a second time after technical difficulties with sound, but I hope delved a little deeper this time around. We wrap things up learning curves and openness to making improvements, the success of the Questions game in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, his approach to Murder Mystery and keeping it simple, and writing a red herring and whether or not there are rules.
