In this episode, Cherise is joined by Christopher Roach, Principal, and Jacquelyn Fung, Studio Director at Studio VARA in San Francisco, California. You can see the project here as you listen along. The Redwood Highway Offices began as an adaptive reuse project that transformed the most banal of commercial box buildings into a light-filled courtyard office space specifically outfitted for a discerning, high-end residential builder with an exclusive clientele. Four main objectives drove the architectural design for the building: to embody the client's enigmatic brand, to embrace the industrial aesthetic, to introduce natural daylighting strategically, and to execute the project efficiently via a well-detailed, judicious use of materials. If you enjoy this episode, visit arcat.com/podcast for more. There are so many unidentified human remains in the United States that the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System calls it “the nation's silent mass disaster.” Roughly 4,400 human remains are found every year, and nearly one-quarter of those remain unidentified after one year. Some people were never reported missing. Some went missing decades ago. Some remains are incomplete, parts of them still out there like missing pieces to a puzzle. Cases run cold. The unidentified remains are placed in boxes and left on evidence room shelves, waiting for another shot at an investigation. Or maybe just a chance to be remembered. And that's if their cardboard tombs are not lost or forgotten first. In Oregon, there are 120 unidentified persons cases. Cold cases exist in 33 of Oregon's 36 counties. Regan Mertz spent months delving into this issue for The Oregonian/OregonLive. She obtained and reviewed missing persons case files, interviewed current and former law enforcement officers, anthropologists and experts around the country. She also interviewed family members of missing people. This is The Unidentifieds, a podcast that investigates four long-forgotten cases in Oregon and how online genealogy and forensic anthropology helped families get closure. Cases that long seemed hopeless, now seem solvable. People who've existed for decades as lonely, nameless phantoms can, if nothing else, get their identities back. In episode one, Regan and co-host Dave Killen go on a trip to southern Oregon's Redwood Highway, where in 1971 a father and son discovered what looked liked a human spine and ribs while on a camping trip near mile marker 35. Upon initial investigation, the remains appeared to belong to a young woman, 18 to 20 years old, tall and slim. But the case went cold. And the remains became known as Jane Doe 79-940. Listen to episode one of The Unidentifieds to learn how genetic genealogy helped solve this 47-year-old case. And subscribe to The Unidentifieds anywhere you listen to podcasts and give it a five-star rating on Apple Podcasts. Look for Episode 2 on April 17. Learn more about your ad choices. James Twyman, also known as “The Peace Troubadour”, is the NY Times bestselling author of 16 books including The Moses Code and The Barn Dance. His first book, Emissary of Light, released in 1996, chronicled his journey into Bosnia and Croatia during the war to meet a group of mystics living in the Balkan Mountains with a message of peace for the world. His latest book, Giovanni and the Camino of St. Francis, tells the story of Anna, a woman from Portland who travels to Italy to walk in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi, proving you're never too old to heal your life.James has recorded more than 18 music albums including the Billboard chart I Am Wishes Fulfilled with Dr. Wayne Dyer. He has also written, produced or directed seven feature films including the award winning Redwood Highway starring Shirley Knight and Tom Skerritt, and Indigo starring Neale Donald Walsch. This began in 1998 when Saddam Hussein invited him to Iraq to perform his peace concert at the same time the US and its allies were preparing for a military invasion. He has also been invited to such countries as Bosnia, Northern Ireland, South Africa and Israel. In Northern Ireland,James performed for the leaders of the two political parties in Belfast during peace negotiations in 1998.

If you look up the definition of 'mother archetype' in the dictionary, my next guest Laura Sweet would probably have her name there as an example. She's been a client of mine and has been active, nurturing, inspiring part of my Lead Your World community for a while, so it is with great pleasure that I get to 'show her off' today.Laura Sweet is a writer and artist living on a small homestead in Northern California between the Redwood Highway and Blacksands beaches of the Lost Coast since 1994.She and her husband of 37 years, Homeschooled their two daughters in a beautiful rural community and now maintain an integral role in the lives of three grandchildren as well.Laura's creative lifestyle is a practical expression of both her transformational health and her natural reciprocity with life. It is how she remains devoted to the mercurial essence of the world she inhabits. If she could impart one simple thing to every soul in the world, it would be that they are whole, holy beloved and worthy of encountering themselves thus. For more details and to see the video, go to merilyn.com

Gribblenation recently launched a US Route 99 page given it has been one of the most frequent US Routes to appear in our blog series. US Route 99 was one of the original US Routes created in 1926 alongside the US Route System. At it's peak US Route 99 was approximately 1,600 miles spanning from Mexican Broder in Calexico, California north to the Canadian Border at Blaine, Washington. US Route 99 has a legacy which is approached by few other American highways which has developed a strong following in the road community. This page is meant to serve as compellation of all Gribblenation blogs and media pertaining to the US Route 99 family of highways: Gribblenation US Route 99 Page This Roadcast is intended to serve as an intro the US Route 99 page but is also an excuse to talk about it's awesome child routes; US Route 199, US Route 299 and US Route 399. The corridor of the Redwood Highway on the South Fork Eel River is an incredibly scenic stretch of highway which is carried by modern US Route 101, Avenue of the Giants and California State Route 271. What tends to get overlooked about the Redwood Highway on the South Fork Eel River is how significant it was allowing automobiles to reach the North Coast of California. Today in the Gribblenation Roadcast Tom discusses how the Redwood Highway on the South Fork Eel River bypassed the hellish Rattlesnake Grade and opened up the North Coast of California to the automobile. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gribblenation/support

Today we are talking about faith which is trusting that there is a loving source of which you are a part. Having faith means that you can let go of fear and tight control and trust that there is a great wisdom within and around you, allowing yourself to breathe and listen for spiritual guidance. Having faith means that even though the recovery process may become difficult and dark, you can trust that you will also find the grace and light. Gary Lundgren is the writer and director of such films as Calvin Marshall, Redwood Highway and Black Road. I selected his most recent film "Phoenix, Oregon" because of the local connection to my hometown of Eugene, Oregon. I expected very little from it but gave it my promised 15 minutes assessment. I wasn't expecting to make past five minutes, truth be told, but Gary's film immerses you into his story with its engaging characters and subdued plot. Who cannot cheer for Bobby and Carlos' attempt to revitalize a foreclosed bowling alley? The subject matter reminded me of Gary Putnam's book, "Bowling Alone: the collapse and revival of American community." The book's theorizes that Americans have increasingly spent less time together due to a variety of factors in our society and culture. With 2020 being the summer of Covid-19, "Phoenix, Oregon" restokes the flame of our folk kinship that hopefully many Americans long to rekindle. The film has the feel of the independent cinema movement of the 90's when young auteurs Spike Lee, Kevin Smith, Jim Jarmusch and Quentin Tarantino brought their visions to the screen. The New York Times calls it "an ode to small-town joys" and that it "feels poignant during our current pandemic." In this episode, Gary discusses the creative process that went into creating "Phoenix, Oregon", what inspires him as a filmmaker and his advice to blossoming artists.

NOTE: IN APRIL OF 2019, THIS JANE DOE WAS IDENTIFIED AS ANNIE LEHMAN OF ABERDEEN, WASHINGTON. THIS EPISODE WAS RECORDED BEFORE THE IDENTIFICATION. In August of 1971, a father and son camping along the Redwood Highway in Josephine County, Oregon located human remains. The body had been carefully placed; however because of the length of time it had been at the location, animal activity had been present since bones were also found within a certain radius. Someone had intentionally placed her body at the location in an effort to conceal her death. Clothing found at the scene also showed evidence of this. Until her identification in 2019, no one could figure out who she was, and theories abounded this woman's case. Jason examines the Annie Doe case, and also plays special snippets from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's web video on this case. ALSO: Nici Vance of the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office explains the results of Annie's isotope results. By Davy Crockett 1893 Native American Relay in Taos, New Mexico For centuries, many Native Americans were known to be outstanding long-distance runners who could run ultra-distances. Their talents were used in important roles to carry messages and news to distant communities. One of the most famous ultra-messaging events took place in 1680 when a very coordinated system of message runners were dispatched from Taos Pueblo, in present-day New Mexico to Hopi Villages in present-day Arizona, nearly 400 miles away, to coordinate a successful, simultaneous, revolt involving 70 villages against their Spanish oppressors. In the 1860s a Mesquakie runner in his mid-50s ran 400 miles from Green Bay, Wisconsin to the Missouri River to warn another tribe about an impending attack. Such runners would dedicate their lives to this role of being an ultrarunning messenger. As Native American Talents became more widely known by Anglo-Americas, competitive wagers arose to prove their capabilities. In 1876 “Big Hawk Chief” ran 120 miles within 20 hours accompanied by an observer on a horse. In the early 1900s gifted ultra-distance runners were known to be among the Hopi, Yaqui, Tarahumara in Mexico, and the Seri of Tiburon Island in the gulf of California. The Hopi had been known to cover 130 miles within 24 hours. The Native American runners occupied a central role in ultrarunning during the early twentieth century. Sadly this fact has largely been forgotten or overlooked. In 1927, a 480-mile race took place on the California/Oregon Redwood Highway that received intense daily attention in newspapers across America. This article will provide the detailed story for the first time of that historic, forgotten race. Plans for the 1927 Redwood Indian Marathon By 1921, the running talents of the Native Americans were being noticed. The Los Angeles Herald, suggested, “If the Olympic commissioners want to find an Olympic Marathon runner who can beat the world, it might be a good scheme to look the Indian reservations over.” By 1926 In Arizona, “Indian Marathons” started to become features at local fairs and festivals. One such race was organized in Phoenix, running 25 miles from downtown to the fair grounds. “Only Indians who, in former days, ran over hot desert sands for various tribal missions will be called upon to appear in the race. The Hopi and Navajo Indian runners will serve as one of the best advertising features of the affair.” Soon this idea spread, to link exhibitions of Native American extreme running with national events. In 1927, with all the recent national attention to Native American runners, including the Tarahumara who were coming to run in Texas, the Chamber of Commerce in San Francisco conceived of a marketing idea to focus on the newly constructed highway stretch called the “Redwood Highway.” This new stretch of mostly dirt road went from San Francisco, California on Highway 101 to Crescent City California, and then east on Highway 199 to Grants Pass, Oregon, weaving through dense forests of redwood trees. In order to get more attention to the highway, and fill hotels along the way, they had a pretty brilliant idea to hold a “Redwood Marathon” foot race on the highway stretch. To gain even more media coverage they wanted to exploit the “Indian runner frenzy” at that time by limiting the entrants to Native Americans. Oregon Cavemen at the Oregon Caves in 1926. Members promoted Grants Pass tourism by dressing in animal skins. In March, Clyde Edmunson, the manager of the Redwood Empire Association, announced that a 480-mile race would be held in June and that a dozen Indian tribes had agreed to enter runners for prizes of $2500. (This was a stretch, because no tribes had actually committed.) In Oregon, The “Caveman Association” of Grants Pass, a club of civic boosters, also jointly sponsored the idea and they claimed that the event would be “the longest race of its kind in history.”

Interview with Producer ANNE LUNDGREN – Film Black Road, Calvin Marshall, and Redwood Highway Film BLACK ROAD is written and directed by Gary Lundgren and produced by Anne Lundgren. Together they own Joma Films in Ashland, Oregon. Working with a team of Oregonians, we have made two features in the Rogue Valley, CALVIN MARSHALL (2009) and REDWOOD HIGHWAY (2014). This neo-noir thriller is about an ex-military drifter who’s hired by a mysterious woman to protect her from a homicidal ex. With an A.I. implant in his head, DYLAN has a virtual companion and moral compass as his situation spirals out of control. Like classic film noir, BLACK ROAD reflects the insecurities of our time; the flailing American job market, economic inequality, government intrusion on civil liberties and our growing love affair with technology. At the heart of this movie is a simple story of desire and disillusionment. Our hero craves a stable life, satisfying work and meaningful relationships…but he’s in trouble – caught between $18M in gold, a femme fatal and the maniac who wants her dead. PREVIOUS FILMS Redwood Highway (2014) Downright charming. The fiercely independent Marie is someone we root for, worry about and wring our hands over in equal measure. – LOS ANGELES TIMES It’s a low-key charmer with a large-souled performance at the center. One of the best roles of [Shirley Knight’s] career. – THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER Calvin Marshall (2009) The best baseball movies are there when we need them, and now we have another classic. -THE AUSTINIST Steve Zahn gives a career-best performance in this low-key gem. -THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER Wow & Flutter (short film) Seventeen heartbreakingly exhilarating minutes. – Hampton Style Magazine A fabulous movie about how life can be so cruel, but how all that bile can disappear with just one kiss. – ***** FILM THREAT Thank You for checking out Hollywood Breakthrough Show!
