America's high-poverty cities and counties have suffered for decades, enduring skyrocketing inequality, the opioid epidemic, rising housing costs, and widespread disinvestment. Governments have offered a variety of failed solutions, from luring wealthy outsiders to slashing public services. But four communities are turning inward instead: Stockton, California; rural Josephine County, Oregon; Lawrence, Massachusetts; and Detroit, Michigan. In these diverse places—all of which went broke in the wake of the Great Recession—locals are building networks and trust in one another and their institutions, to promote health, wealth, and opportunity. In Stockton, this meant designing organizations to help residents cope with trauma. In Josephine County, people convinced freedom-loving, government-averse voters to increase taxes. Lawrence is building a new model to secure living wages. Detroit is battling to stabilize low-income housing. What did these strategies look and feel like on the ground? How can other struggling places borrow from their playbooks? And what can the rest of the country do to support towns as they try to help themselves? Stanford Law School's Michelle Wilde Anderson, winner of the 2023 Zócalo Book Prize for The Fight to Save the Town: Reimagining Discarded America, visits Zócalo to talk with Alberto Retana, president and CEO of South L.A.'s Community Coalition, about how a place with the odds against it can draw on historic strengths and resilient residents to thrive. Zócalo Public Square is proud to award the 2023 Zócalo Poetry Prize to Paige Buffington for her poem "From 20 Miles Outside of Gallup, Holbrook, Winslow, Farmington, or Albuquerque." Poet Sam Simpson's drunken quest for lost-cabin gold: Part 2 of 2

By 1899, when Samuel L. Simpson's drinking problem finally got around to killing him, he was essentially Oregon's poet laureate — the Stewart Holbrook of the 1800s. But thirty years earlier, he was just another fresh-faced lawyer, just out of Willamette University's law school. He'd moved to Portland to open his practice, and now he was sitting at his desk in his brand-new office in Portland, sipping a glass of rye and waiting for his first client to walk in the door. No one did. There were just too many lawyers in Portland in 1868. Fresh out of law school, with no social connections, Sam just didn't have a chance. But finally the door did open, and somebody stepped inside. It wasn't a client, though. It was one of the other residents in the boardinghouse he was staying in, a greenhorn from Chicago named Ted Harper. And Harper had a proposition: He wanted Sam to close up his law office and come to Southern Oregon with him. They would spend the summer hunting for a certain ruined cabin with an immense hoard of gold buried inside, deep in the wilderness south of Jacksonville, in a hidden valley boxed in by steep cliffs. Only problem was, Harper didn't know exactly where the valley was. It was possible that they'd search all summer and get nothing for their pains. But Harper did have a letter giving partial directions to the cabin, which his cousin — who'd built the cabin and buried the gold — had dropped dead in the middle of writing. Simpson agreed to the scheme. He was brand new in the law business, had no clients and very few prospects; a summer in the woods, a possible fortune – sure, why not? On Jan. 6, Josephine County Commissioners voted to terminate the lease of the Grants Pass central library. Commissioners have since said they simply want to renegotiate the $1-a-year lease of the county-owned building. This comes after a legal battle last year over whether residents could opt out of the library’s special tax district. It also follows a period of 10 years in which the library system was run by a nonprofit and volunteers, rather than by the county. Josephine County Commissioner Chris Barnett and Jennifer Roberts, president of the Grants Pass Friends of the Library, join us to fill us in.

Cat Bonney has lived in Oregon most of her life, with a brief stint in Texas, So Cal and a year overseas. She's had her own commercial/graphic arts business since college — which she started out of a desire to NOT remain at the college-assigned job in the kitchen, having to wake early to make breakfast for all of her college peers… After college, she came home for a two-week vacation, expecting to return to Texas,  but during that time, her plans changed due to a health crisis with her boss. Liking the climate here and her mom living close,  she decided to make Southern Oregon her permanent home. Cat and her wife live on the family ranch with a dog and a couple of cats, not to mention the neighborly sheep, cows and llama for security. Along with their marketing business, Webb Mountain Arts, and her contract as the Executive Director of a local non-profit, Common Connections, Cat is using her years of real estate appraisal experience to help Common Connections and Mid Rogue Foundation (another local non-profit) to manage the Housing Repair & Rehabilitation Program for low and moderate income homeowners in Josephine County. She is also an avid volunteer in various community programs, and as a business owner, she's involved in the Grants Pass & Josephine County Chamber of Commerce. Cat truly believe's that to make our community the way we want it, we must be involved at a personal level. For more on Cat's work, checkout the links below! Decades of cuts to local government amidst rising concentrations of poverty have wreaked havoc on communities left behind by the modern economy. Some of these discarded places are rural. Others are big cities, small cities, or historic suburbs. Some vote blue, others red. Mostly, their governments are just broke. Stanford Law School Professor Michelle Wilde Anderson says that 40 years after the anti-tax revolution began protecting wealthy taxpayers and their cities, high-poverty cities and counties have run out of services to cut, properties to sell, bills to defer, and risky loans to take. In The Fight to Save the Town, Anderson traveled to four blue-collar communities that are poor, broke, and progressing—Stockton, California; Josephine County, Oregon; Lawrence, Massachusetts; and Detroit, Michigan. She shares how networks of local leaders and residents are coming together to face this crisis head on and working toward innovative solutions to deal with pressing issues, including gun violence, housing and unemployment. Hear more about the fight to save our communities at the local level and create wealth equity for all. Finally the door did open, and somebody stepped inside.... (Siskiyou Mountains, Josephine County; 1860s) (For text and pictures, see http://offbeatoregon.com/20-05.sam-simpson-lost-cabin-gold.html)

The “lost cabin gold mine” is a certifiable Western trope. If every ounce of legendary gold buried in an old log cabin became real and hit the banks at the same time, it would probably crash the international markets. They make for fantastic stories, though. And often the gold isn't the only thing being hidden. Plus, of course, the fact that they might — just might — be real adds a distinctive spice to them. One of the most interesting and colorful Lost Cabin Gold Mine stories is the one that supposedly took place in the hills south of Jacksonville in 1853. In this case, it's not a mine that's been lost — it's a vault: a small stone-lined crypt stuffed with millions of dollars' worth of freshly dug gold, and guarded by whatever remains of the skeletons of two long-dead men. Michelle Wilde Anderson is an award-winning Professor at Stanford Law School and an expert on poverty, inequality, and local government. Her new book The Fight to Save the Town (published by Simon and Schuster in June 2022) prominently features Josephine County as she describes signs of progress in places in America with high poverty and broke governments (the book also looks at Stockton, CA, Lawrence, MA, and Detroit, MI).   In this episode, Michelle provides a portrait of Josephine County and the people who live there--and what makes the place so interesting. We talk about the origin of poverty in southern Oregon, the caliber of people running for local office, and how communities provide "public safety" when the government fails to. Perhaps most importantly for our listeners, we talk about the lessons we can learn from Josephine County, a deeply conservative place with anti-government tendencies, where they finally passed a series of local levies after years of failed attempts. Michelle offers a more hopeful "counter-narrative" to what's happening in Josephine County than what you'll read in most papers.    Here is a short blurb on The Fight to Save the Town: The book "focuses on the dismantling and rebuilding of local government in high-poverty communities. Rooted in narrative portraits of urban and rural poverty, the book describes the fallout from decades of cuts to local government amidst rising segregation by income and race." We can't recommend the book enough -- it is engaging, sobering, and uplifting all at once.   Michelle's Recommendations on Organizations to Support: Riverstar Performing Arts The Four Way Community Foundation Illinois Valley Community Development Organization

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the market for hemp production in the U.S. was worth more than $820 million last year. Oregon is one of the top 10 hemp-growing states in the nation, with most of the cultivation taking place in Jackson and Josephine Counties. But a moratorium on new licenses to grow hemp in those two counties and a crackdown by state lawmakers on illegal marijuana that has found to be grown on some licensed hemp farms have led some entrepreneurs to question the future of hemp in Oregon. Joining us to discuss the challenges their industry faces are Mason Walker, the co-owner and CEO of East Fork Cultivars, a farm in Josephine County which grows both hemp and marijuana, and Paul Murdoch, the owner and CEO of Horn Creek Hemp, a family-run hemp farm in Jackson County. The hemp industry was worth almost one billion dollars last year, and Oregon is one of the top-ten hemp growing states in the country. But recently, fears of illegal cannabis grows have lead to a moratorium on new hemp licenses in two Oregon counties. We'll talk with two hemp growers about the future of the industry in the state.

Because if you're really going to be able to meet youth where they're at, there has to be some type of flexibility, I think built into that. But being able to meet a youth where they're at in life, again, it's very broad. That's something that is exciting because you have all the tools, and you're able to exercise different types of tools at different circumstances. And so by doing that, you can create interest, I think, within that youth. And that's the goal for them to have that spark. Podcast Intro: There's a place in Southern Oregon, filled with gorgeous natural beauty, friendly yet independent people and a mild, comfortable climate. That place is called Grants Pass. These are the stories of the people that live and work Josephine County. These are the movers and shakers that make this place of the best. This is Grants Pass VIP. He's very much youth-centered and goal-oriented. Drew Wilkerson welcome. Drew: Really appreciate it Brian, thank you very much. Looking forward to this. Brian: Yeah, no, I'm really happy to have you here. We met over at the Chamber of Commerce and we've been talking about getting together for a while. So this is great to have you here. Why don't you let everyone know more about who you are, and where people might know you from. Drew: Sure. Kind of like in that intro, having spent a number of years in the public schools, you get to know I think quite a few people in there and working with students and a wide variety of ways. And so by getting connected with College Dream, now with Project Youth Plus, I get to continue, I think just different ways of serving youth, and working with people that are very like-minded and trying to meet people where they're at, in all different walks of life. Trying to help them I think just take the next step towards their goals, kind of making it a reality. Not everyone fits the same type of shoe. And so it's always an adventure coming from that background. Within the schools, you know, again, you get to know quite a few people serve in youth, but then also now in the nonprofit world and where we get to expand our borders, in different ways to serve youth, but also how we do it. At the same time, two different worlds, we got the public schools and education route, we got the nonprofit world, definitely two different worlds, but different ways of serving. That's really where the heart is. Within the schools, I still serve as an athletic director at a midd...

What you're about to listen to is a conversation that I had with John Chambers and it's recorded a little bit differently. I was asking John what he did, and as we start the podcast you'll hear John describing what he does. And so what you're going to hear is him break that down into pieces of all the different things that he does and what those things all have in common. This is a very interesting conversation. John: All of the things that I do, they all have a theme to them and I had not recognized until recently. There is the nutrition aspect of it. Because if a person that has proper nutrition, then they are not dependent upon the rest of when I say the rest of the world, I mean, like that medical and the government and this sort of thing to take care of them because they can take care of themselves because they have decent nutrition, they're independent of it. Also, I do drug prevention here and there, not a whole lot but I'm certified as that. And I keep up my certification so that I can do that. Then also, I have been teaching a constitution that started in 1991, a private high school that was near me. What I'm getting from you is that in your entire discussion of what the Josephine County Eagle means to you, it's more about bringing people together instead of dividing people, you know, instead of dividing us between the city and county, instead of dividing us between Republican, Democrats have divided us between business owner and employees. You're trying to bring people together to understand each other more, to understand each other's perspective more, is am I getting that right? Richard: Dead on. I mean, yes, we have differences. Brian looks back on the week that was after we launched our first interview podcast on BJP Live. Also, some thoughts on his inspiration to share his behind the scene work, from reading Austin Kleon's, Show Your Work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUpr0e6HPNE Transcription Video Interview Podcasts. Hi, I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live. This is one where I'm going to just take a little bit of time to go over kind of what I experienced over the last couple months, putting together a new process for doing video interview podcasts. So, up until now, this show has been me and my phone, talking. And that's about it, every once a while, I'll take you on the road, every once in a while, I'll have my business partner or my children and so forth pop in here. But for the most part, it's me and it's you and that's it. What ended up happening is I have another two other podcasts currently. One is called Grants Pass VIP, which is a local based podcast. It's all around Grants Pass, Oregon and Josephine County, and that it's an interview podcast, but it's completely by voice, very easy to edit, very simple. If anything goes wrong, we can usually fix it, we usually make things sound pretty good. So, done that for a little while now you can go check those out of Grants PassVIP.com, we've had a lot of great fun with that show. The show before that, that I started was Off The Grid Biz Podcast, which interviews industry people within the self-reliance niche. So businesses and organizations that help people to become more self-reliant in some way of their products or services. And so that has been a whole lot of fun too. Same type of deal, it's an audio podcast, very easy to edit, very easy to get somebody either on the phone, or over zoom to be able to do that. Now with video, it's a whole different thing. It's a little more difficult to edit. And so it's kind of a one-shot and you're done type of deal, kind of like what we're doing tonight, maybe most of these that you see are completely unedited. I mean, I'll put a little title over the front. That's about it. That's pretty much what we do for the dailies. And so what we decided to do was take the whole concept of the dailies, which are each under 10 minutes. And what if we took a video podcast of full-length one, and then split it up. And so we had this last interview with Bob Regnerus over the last handful of nights, which was recorded over a short very short period of time, but took an entire week of content. So normally when I'm doing these on a nightly basis, I wasn't doing for the past week. So I was able to leave town, and I'm always able to leave town, but I was specifically able to leave town to go see a wedding for my cousin and got to see family and everybody else. Be able to do it without having to worry about jumping into my car or something to record so that I don't wake people up, because I do these tend to do these late at night. So this is one of those examples of an episode where I kind of give you a little bit of behind the scenes. And they all came from this book, Show Your Work, one of my favorites, by Austin Kleon. It's a short book, lots of pictures, lots of diagrams and stuff. Great one you want to go out and check out this book show your work by Austin Kleon. And the whole concept is 10 ways to share your creativity and get discovered. So all I do is talk about what I do and how I go about doing it here on daily basis. So if you're interested in this, be sure and go to BrianJPombo.com sign up for an email. And you'll get in fact, we just recently fixed that we were having some issues with that too and a little behind the scenes there. But we send out an email every day with updates on the website. It's usually just one video, one audio, either watch or listen to and you can go check that out at, BrianJPombo.com. If you want to check out all the interviews that we're go...

For more ➡️ JoCoEagle.com https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g9mldsWZVg Transcription How to fight the big boys. Hi I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live. What does it mean how to fight the big boys? Why would I even be talking about this? Well, it really comes down to right now we're in a really crazy time of transition. And you can see it all around you. There are situations to where people are flexing their muscles, and they're doing it through their organizations, through their companies, through the government, everything else. And there gets to be a point at which it feels as though there's monopolies in certain sectors. So social media, there are certain big people on the block with social media. And they kind of run the show. It's really tough to work around them because they become big, because they were first because they were best, because they provided people what they wanted, and no one else was able to compete with them. They were able to get a foothold on the regulations and so forth. That helped keep the small guys small, and everything else. This happens, no matter what industry you're in, it eventually happens everywhere. Everyone always freaks out as if it's the first time in history this has ever happened. This happens. Every time in every industry that touches most people's lives. It doesn't matter whether you're talking big oil, or big tech, or big media or big anything, there's always going to be a handful of those that rise to the top, they get better at it than everybody else. That crush the competition every chance they get and make it extremely difficult for new people to enter the market. So want to pull this back to something very local going on hearing Grants Pass Oregon, which is where I'm filming this from. And we have a situation ever since I started visiting. Grants Pass probably was close to 20 years ago when I first started visiting. And I had some friends in the area and everyone would be complain about the local newspaper. There's one local newspaper that that covers Grants Pass specifically. And everyone would always complain about how they were this they were that. So well, why hasn't anyone else risen up and donate that? Well, it's so difficult. They have that they have the name and they've been around for so long. And it takes money to start a newspaper and you have to have influence and all the other things that go along with trying to beat out the big boy. The one that's in charge the one that's that's been around the longest. And I have heard these complaints from right to left, center aisle, everybody. It's not just a philosophical issue. It and because it actually the paper has gone through a number of different editors and so forth in these throughout these years. No matter what there's always been heavy duty complaints about the fact that this newspaper is really has a monopoly on local news in terms of news, you know, typical that, you know, the average newspapers, they aren't lasting, they're all going online, and so on, so forth. So the fact that this one's even lasted this long is amazing. But it also goes to the fact that we have a very mature population in terms of age, and so forth. So you still have a lot of people getting a physical newspaper delivered to their home in the same way they always had. Now they have the Online Edition and everything. But that does seem to be a huge bulk of what's still going on. And people still expect all those things that they got from newspapers 20 4080 years in, in the past. So it still has a huge amount of ability to promote or not promote one agenda or another. And so a lot of people have talked for years about buying the newspaper about building up a new one about having an online version that that beats it out, and so on so forth.

Hi, I'm Brian Pombo, welcome back to Brian J. Pombo Live. What do I mean by that? Well, I've got a good story for you today. Because I was interviewing for my local show Grants Pass VIP, was interviewing a local legend. And he's not just a legend locally, he is a legend worldwide. And he's a legend in the world of treehouses of all things. I got to visit the world's largest conglomeration of tree houses. All out here in Southern Oregon is out in Josephine County, a little place called Takilma, and got to go out to the out and about tree house treeresort. It was started and it's run by a guy named Michael Garnier. And his last name was Garnier. But the pronunciation is different than what he grew up with. But he had decided to add a little bit of the original French flair to it for the show, for all for the showmanship what he was doing. And he is a brilliant marketer in terms of getting what he calls publicitree. Getting good publicitree for his treehouses, and he used a lot of great controversy. Controversy, as he calls it for for getting good publicitree. And what ended up happening is he he originally had a cabin out in the woods that he was renting out as kind of a b&b, a Bed and Breakfast. This was back in the late 80s. And in then, around 1990, he said, What would really be good…he says, I get a little bit of attention with this, but not getting a whole lot. What if I built a tree, if you will, he added had already built a treehouse for his kids. He said, What if I turn that into a place where people can stay and pay to stay the night in a treehouse just make it where it's livable, in a sense and so he went about doing that. Well, he got in trouble with the local authorities because they said, you can't get a permit for a housing structure if it doesn't have proper foundation, in-terms of having a concrete or treated timber foundation. And so he wasn't able to get a permit. So he just built built one up in a tree and figured out how to do it well. And started getting attention with that and they said you can't do that, so they took him to court. And he went back and forth, and has been fighting it for 30 plus years. Back and forth with both the county and the state. He's finally at a point to where it looks better. But during that whole time, he used it as publicity for his treehouse resort, which grew and grew to the point to where he is one of the leading figures on the world stage when it comes to treehouse is building solid treehouses, he developed the Garnier Limb, which is a metal, in a sense of limb that you can connect the tree to the tree house. You may have seen him on TV, he's been on numerous shows all these shows about tree houses, a lot of this is all because of him. He was one of the pioneers in this entire industry. In early 90s, he bought treehouses.com and still owns it. So you go check out his stuff. But amazing individual, it's going to be a great interview. I mean, it was a great interview, it's going to be great when we finally get it released. So I'll let you know when that's available over at Grants Pass VIP. But go check out that podcast and you can listen to everything else I have there and wait for it to make sure you subscribe, so you wait for that to come out. But the magic thing is he was able to take extreme adversity, the type of thing that would normally shut down a company and use it to his benefit. He got attention from that first he got attention from being on the cover of Pete Nelson who have I'm not sure if you're aware he's of a famous author and promoter of treehouses. He had written a book, I believe it was in 94, where his tree house was on the cover.

Join us as Darin talks about his life and times in Southern Oregon, to leaving his successful electrical business to run for office. As well as current events such as COVID-19 and the importance of getting kids back to school. Transcription Brian: Darin Fowler has lived in Josephine county for 47 years. Starting a successful business and raising his family here. For 25 years he has volunteered as a coach, Sunday school teacher and in local government. Darin Fowler, welcome to Grants Pass VIP. Darin: Good morning. How are you? Brian: Doing good, doing good. Really appreciate being here, just so the rest of you know, we're in the end of July of 2020, still dealing with the effects of the COVID crisis. Besides that, let's get straight into who you are and what you're all about. Where would everybody know you from Darin? Darin: Well, I've lived here almost my whole life. My parents moved here when I was four in 1970. A lot of people I know from school, found my wife at the schools here. And then my kids went to the same schools. I bought the house across the street from the one I grew up in. My kids ended up with the same school, same teachers. And now my grandson lives six blocks away and he goes to the same school so it's been really fun. So you might know me as a soccer coach or a soccer referee, along the way I did a lot of that. Basketball coach for kids. And then I've been electrician for 33 years. So most people would know me from my electrician profession. And I still have that business. I like to put in a few plugs on the weekend. But then 12 years ago, I started getting involved in local politics. So some people know me because of that. I was on the city council, right after they recalled five city councilors, you know, around '08 or '09, right in there. My two fellow Commissioners in this county office, were part of this group that got in on that five recalled city councilors, and we got in and I spent 10 years over at the city three as a city councilor, and six and a half as mayor. Now I have this full time job as Josephine County Commission. Now I've met new people that just know me as a county commissioner. It's been interesting staying in the same community, find a way to make a living, and then serving my community as a public servant. It's been really fun. Brian: So ever since originally moving here, have you lived here the whole time? Darin: Almost. Yep. After high school here, you kind of get that itch, I wonder what it's like outside of Grants Pass? And I got to get the heck out of here. I was fortunate enough to friend was going to San Diego. So I moved in with him in San Diego and learn how to be an electrician down there in San Diego was a pretty fun place to be 18 to 21. We did have some fun, but when it's time to have a family and settle into the normal family unit like I did, I found out they were actually paying more for electricians in Grants Pass and they weren't San Diego, because there's a very restrictive licensing law in Oregon that California didn't have. I came up here and was making good money for a young man. And it's been a really excellent trade. It's fun to know something. Brian: other than the career, what other reasons is there to come to Grants Pass and stay in Grants Pass? Darin: Well and I always say that if you could find a way to make a living here. Who wouldn't want to live here? It's just beautiful. The weather, it's the climate. The coast is close. Mountains and rivers are all around you. If you can find a way to make a living here, you would love to live here and I have enjoyed it because your kids feel safe out in the street in front of your house. There's the Boys and Girls Club in the basketball and the soccer and baseball and all those sports.

left to right: Kate Pombo, Allie Pombo, Tyler Pombo, Brian Pombo, Lucas Pombo Why “Grants Pass VIP Podcast?” What's it all mean? Grants Pass resident and podcast host Brian J. Pombo introduces himself explains the story behind this new show. Transcription Hi, I'd like to welcome you to Grants Pass VIP, I'm Brian Pombo. So what is Grants Pass VIP? Well, it's a chance for us to get to know each other. So everybody in Josephine County, and Grants Pass and even a lot of people on the outskirts or people that just have something to do with Grants Pass and the culture around here. I want them to be able to be on the show so that we can all get to know each other. I've never really been able to get out and network enough. And I just feel that there's a need for this type of thing where a person could network without leaving their house, especially now this is 2020. While I'm recording this, we're still dealing with the COVID-19 epidemic and a lot of people are held up so why not have a way where we can get out and talk to each other and learn about each other and be able to do it in a passive way. There's a lot of reasons for this. One, I know that the more people that you know, the better off you are just in general, it opens up doors, it allows for a certain amount of security. It allows you to be able to stand out and be able to go out and reach somebody to get the help you need. Let's see you here's somebody on the show that provides a service that you can really use when you feel like you already know them because you've heard a conversation that we had on the show. So this is really all about conversations. It's about breaking down barriers, and getting to know each other. And I think that'll make us all a whole lot safer too, because it reduces the divisiveness that I've seen kind of crop up in politics and everything else around the community. And most of it comes from people just not knowing each other very well. The people that know each other even when they disagree about things. They usually get along. They can least handle each other on a one on one human basis. Right. So Grants Pass is a beautiful area. I chose it specifically to raise my family here. I feel very blessed to be here and I look forward to meeting so many of you out there and hopefully we could make this into something really fabulous.

By 1899, when Samuel L. Simpson’s drinking problem finally got around to killing him, he was essentially Oregon’s poet laureate — the Stewart Holbrook of the 1800s. But thirty years earlier, he was just another fresh-faced lawyer, just out of Willamette University’s law school. He’d moved to Portland to open his practice, and now he was sitting at his desk in his brand-new office in Portland, sipping a glass of rye and waiting for his first client to walk in the door. No one did. There were just too many lawyers in Portland in 1868. Fresh out of law school, with no social connections, Sam just didn’t have a chance. But finally the door did open, and somebody stepped inside. It wasn’t a client, though. Only problem was, Harper didn’t know exactly where the valley was.... The “lost cabin gold mine” is a certifiable Western trope. If every ounce of legendary gold buried in an old log cabin became real and hit the banks at the same time, it would probably crash the international markets. They make for fantastic stories, though. And often the gold isn’t the only thing being hidden. Plus, of course, the fact that they might – just might – be real adds a distinctive spice to them. One of the most interesting and colorful Lost Cabin Gold Mine stories is the one that supposedly took place in the hills south of Jacksonville in 1853. In this case, it’s not a mine that’s been lost – it’s a vault: a small stone-lined crypt stuffed with millions of dollars’ worth of freshly dug gold, and guarded by whatever remains of the skeletons of two long-dead men.... What happens when you bring together a group of students from the Portland metro area and a group from Josephine County in Southern Oregon for a two-week cultural exchange? At a time when our country seems more and more factionalized the Exchange for Change program was devised as a way for urban and rural youth to spend a week in each distinct community to share perspectives, explore differences, understand similarities, and more than anything build connections and friendships. Rob had the opportunity to share a zoom session with students Maia and Ashley, as well as Southern Oregon Exchange for Change leaders Jann Taylor and Adele Garcia and Portland Exchange for Change leaders George Zaninovich, Lindsay Babbitt & Krystal Wu. They shared what the program is all about and how its impact still reverberates a year later. In 2017, she became part of Absolute Dog's Pro Dog Trainer Movement, a worldwide cadre of professionals teaching and inspiring through positive reinforcement and games-based conceptual learning. Her love of dogs and community lead her to Josephine County's Search & Rescue K9 Unit, where for over a decade she has been a coach, trainer, and handler by deploying her certified dogs throughout southern Oregon and beyond.  Her dog sport passion is agility. One of her most memorable moments came when she and her Sussex “Beryl” were invited to the AKC Agility Invitational where they finished as the top 8” Preferred Dog. ln addition to her passion for agility and scent work, she has exhibited and titled dogs in virtually every venue from spaniel hunting tests to rally, obedience, and conformation. Charles Fiester really, really didn’t want to die. Fair enough; most of us don’t. His wife, Nancy, hadn’t wanted to die either; but she’d been trying to leave their 30-year marriage and had taken up with another man, a Mr. Mudd. And, well, one thing had led to another and the next thing anyone knew Fiester was dragging her by the hair to a mud puddle and drowning her in it, while their three youngest children looked on in horror. As a result, on Sept. 30, 1895, he found himself facing a jury in a Josephine County court. And those jurors weren’t turning out to be particularly favorably disposed toward him. They took just 40 minutes coming to a verdict: Guilty of first-degree murder. Fiester wasn’t too worried at first. He seemed pretty sure that he would be able to get the Supreme Court to overturn the conviction or commute it into a prison sentence. Sure enough, a few days before his scheduled execution date, the Supreme Court issued a stay of execution to buy it a little time to review his claim of insanity. And it was just after this that Fiester abruptly went into a catatonic state. He lay there on his bunk, neither speaking nor responding to anyone around him, staring straight at the ceiling, all day. And all the next day. And the next.... (Kerby, Josephine County; 1895) (For text and pictures, see http://offbeatoregon.com/1803a.fiester-murderer-faked-insanity-515-days-485.html)

In August of 1971, a father and son camping along the Redwood Highway in Josephine County, Oregon located human remains. The body had been carefully placed; however because of the length of time it had been at the location, animal activity had been present since bones were also found within a certain radius. Someone had intentionally placed her body at the location in an effort to conceal her death. Clothing found at the scene also showed evidence of this. Until her identification in 2019, no one could figure out who she was, and theories abounded this woman's case. Jason examines the Annie Doe case, and also plays special snippets from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's web video on this case.
