Podcast: This week on the show we feature a pre-recorded conversation with Bob Noha, co-editor of and contributor to Aikido – The Art of Transformation: The Life & Teachings of Robert Nadeau, published recently by Park Street Press, a division of Inner Traditions. A widely influential figure in the development of Aikido in America, Robert Nadeau is known as one of the few American direct disciples of Aikido's founder Morihei Ueshiba O-sensei. Now an 8th dan Aikido master teacher, Nadeau has taught generations of students, and several have become prominent teachers in their own right. However, he has never written about his life or philosophy, always reserving his most pointed lessons for those who practice with him in person. This book tells the story of Robert Nadeau's life journey and his distinctive approach to teaching Aikido as a way to access the inner energetic aspects of the art, a transformational approach with universal applications in daily life, even for non-Aikidoists. The authors explore Nadeau's early interest in martial arts and all things spiritual as a teenager in California in the 1950s, his seminal training under Morihei Ueshiba at Aikido Hombu Dojo in Tokyo in the 1960s, and the following six decades of training, experimenting, refining, and teaching as he worked to introduce Aikido to the wider world, even beyond the traditional dojo. They lay out Nadeau's core concepts, describe his simple-but-effective practices for personal development, and convey his time-tested approach to the inner training at the heart of Aikido in a very accessible way. They also include first-person accounts from Nadeau's students, including Dan Millman, Richard Strozzi-Heckler, Peter Ralston, and Renée Gregorio, who recall their personal experiences of training with him, retell conversations with him, and describe insights and lessons learned, sharing how he affected their lives, sometimes quite profoundly. Bob Noha, 6th Dan, began practicing Aikido in 1966 in Mountain View and shortly thereafter began training with Robert Nadeau Sensei, which started a lifelong friendship. Bob opened the first Aikido school in the Washington, DC, area in 1970 and taught arrest/restraint tactics to US Military Police at Andrews Air Force Base in 1974. Then, in 1975, he established the first Aikido school in Buffalo, New York. He founded Aikido of Petaluma in 1983 and continues to serve as its chief instructor. Bob traveled to Japan to further deepen his Aikido training in 1998, 1999, and 2006. In addition, he is also a devoted student and teacher of t'ai chi and has a background in several other martial arts. Most of the neurons comprising the midbrain reticular formation lie dorsal and lateral to the red nuclei. Complex interactions between multiple neurotransmitters modulate the action of the reticular activating system with both cholinergic and adrenergic neurotransmission having key roles. The reticular activating system's fundamental role is regulating arousal and sleep−wake transitions. The ascending reticular activating system projects to the intralaminar nuclei of the thalami, which projects diffusely to the cerebral cortex. The ascending projections of the reticular activating system enhance the attentive state of the cortex and facilitate conscious perception of sensory stimuli. Additionally, the collective role of the brainstem reticular formation is to regulate autonomic function, muscle reflexes, and tone.' B.L. Walter, A.G. Shaikh, in Encyclopedia of the Neurological Sciences (Second Edition), 2014 - note from Robbie: So it is part of the brain, but only a small part of it is about attention/conscious perception. Cheryl Esposito welcomes Richard Strozzi-Heckler, PhD, founder of Strozzi work & Strozzi Institute, & author of The Art of Somatic Coaching. Richard says the ‘self' is the leader's primary source of power & effectiveness. The success or failure of leaders is more than a game of expertise & strategy. “It has become abundantly clear to me that we do not transform ourselves and our thinking through good ideas or hope. To make sustainable shifts in our behavior and way of thinking, we have to embody new schemas.” Somatic Coaching was developed as a way to cultivate the self through the body. In somatics, the body is not just a physiological entity but is the center of our lived experience in the world. It is a way to move toward mastery in our lives, our leadership, and achieving our highest potential. Join Cheryl Esposito and Richard Strozzi Heckler to explore leadership moves that matter.
My special guest in this episode is Pete Hamill, a leadership consultant and somatic coach with a special focus on embodied leadership approach. Pete has a really fascinating background. He has been trained by Dr. Richard Strozzi-Heckler at the Strozzi Institute for Embodied Leadership, and is a certified Somatic Leadership Coach. He is also an author of the book “Embodied Leadership: The Somatic Approach to Developing Your Leadership”. For me this chat brought into the forefront (again!) the importance of body in leadership. Hope you will like the episode too! “What role does the body play in leadership, beyond just body language? Consider emotional intelligence: when you have an emotional reaction to something (e.g. that email that makes you angry) the reaction you experience doesn't appear as an idea in your head, but as a feeling in your gut. It's an ‘embodied' reaction. What about how you deal with conflict? Have you noticed how children and animals often know when people are upset before they do? They're not noticing words, but they are able to observe bodies, and the subsequent emotional states. Embodied Leadership is about learning to lead at a deeper, more fundamental level, working through the body to deeper levels of self-awareness, developing the capacity to be the leader you want to be, and achieving what you are committed to achieving.” – Pete Hamill Listen and enjoy!

My guest for this podcast is an author, coach and consultant, and the founder of Strozzi Institute - Richard Strozzi-Heckler.
In our modern age, many of us go through life feeling disconnected from our own bodies and from one another. In addition to fueling conflict and other large-scale problems facing humanity today, this sense of disconnectedness can impair our ability to lead others. Born out of his lifelong interest in psychology, spirituality, and martial arts, Richard Strozzi-Heckler – our guest in Episode 97 of The MINDSet Game® podcast – made it his mission to help leaders achieve true transformation in their organizations and the world at large. As the author of several books and the founder of the Strozzi Institute, Richard has introduced numerous different ideas and practices to help individuals achieve “embodied leadership” in a variety of settings. In this episode, Richard shares: The concept of somatics – which comes from the Greek word “soma,” or the living body in its wholeness – and how gaining an understanding of somatics can have an impact on individuals, organizations, and the world How embodiment can improve your effectiveness as a leader The power of verbal declarations – particularly one that states “I am a commitment” to something you're seeking to create The concept of conditioned tendencies, and why it's important to become aware of your own conditioned tendencies and work on reversing those that are no longer serving you Richard also guides us through a powerful centering exercise that you can practice at any time to become more present, open, and connected. To learn more about Richard and embodied leadership, visit https://strozziinstitute.com. To subscribe to The MINDset Game® podcast, visit www.TheMINDsetGame.com.

Introduction: Tom Goodell is the President and Founder of Linden Leadership. His company offers Executive, Management and Team Coaching as well as Leadership Development and Culture Programs for a wide variety of Organisations. Tom is an author and has written several books including, Linden's Leadership Cycles of Leadership, Three Practices of Collective Performance, Six Practices of Personal Performance and most recently The Four Fields of Leadership. Goodell received his CPPM certification in ontological coaching from the Newfield Network, inc, in Boulder Colorado. He also studied somatic coaching with Richard Strozzi Heckler, founder and director of Strozzi Institute in Petaluma, California. Podcast Episode Summary This episode explores the impetus for Tom's latest work The Four Fields of Leadership. John Baldoni puts it well when he says of Tom's book “Leadership is an ageless proposition. What has changed over the millennia is context. Goodell places Leadership with the context of our times in ways that make it accessible and actionable” The podcast underscores the importance of understanding self in a quest to be with another, others and to thrive in organisations. Tom shares how he combines his many, seemingly disparate, interests in an intelligible whole to understand human systems. Points made over the episode Tom's story began for him when he as 5 years of age and he can remember playing the game called Go. It is a game that challenges a player to cultivate his whole brain because of the amount of possibilities -Chance is not involved but a person is minded to develop intuition, form & aesthetics as well as logic and analytics Tom's early interest in Eastern thinking, spirituality has been an integral part of this own thinking. His early experience in organisational life taught him that no matter how elegant the enterprise architecture if human beings were not getting along the organisation was impacted. Tom's interest in human systems saw him study with Newfield in Colorado and with Richard Strozzi Heckler at the Strozzi Institute in California to become a Coach and Facilitator Declarations are an important constituent part of the training at Strozzi and as a consequence and honed over many years Tom is able to say that his declaration says he is “a commitment to awakening the full power of the human spirit in organizations everywhere” That declaration has been his guiding light ever since The human spirit is what makes a life worth living and work worth working. We are all connected and have always been connected but we forget. The space between us and the quality of our relations determine whether we thrive. Tom began to recognise the “Tower of Babble” he encountered in organisation with many multiple interventions/modalities of learning and leadership that spoke different languages. He found that many omitted the unifying principles on which their theories are founded. His book attempts to illuminate these unifying principles to squash confusion and allow for real conversations. If you understand the Four Fields of Leadership everything becomes coherent. The four fields of Leadership include the Field of Self, The Interpersonal Field, The field of teams and the Enterprise field. There is a huge degree of complexity, subtlety & fragility across each field as well as an amount of wisdom and intelligence Everything starts with an understanding of the Field of Self. That means understanding and having an appreciation for awareness in three minds, The Physical, The Emotional and The Analytic, our responsibility to be in Choice and to take Accountability. Humility is required to know that we are not always in control of our state. It takes humility to step back and say “ I have some work to do on myself” Tom's approach with teams is present based. He always listens carefully and senses into the field of teams. He often speaks with each individual member of the team to see how they experience the team. He simply starts where the team is and doesn't lead with content or theory. Tom notices patterns of behaviours on teams and intervenes to help the team see its dynamic. He makes an important distinction between context and content. If you can notice the context and work with that the content is often that much richer. Tom shares The Cycle of Leadership suite of conversations-a model for how effective conversations can happen. -The first being a conversation for possibilities where a leader taps into the wisdom of the community or those around who might be impacted by his decisions. -The conversation as Declaration. This is where a future is declared, Conditions of Satisfaction are shared so that everyone is clear about the COS that need to be met for success. -Conversations for Requests- sharing the who will take responsibility for what. -Finally and importantly Conversations for reflection This is where the team asks questions of itself, not just the project. Questions like “how are we?” This can serve as a healing conversation before a team gets too distorted. As Coaches and Practitioners we can be more influential on teams if we are willing to be courageous and call out that team members need to do work on themselves. “When we connect to our own energy and life force, we're actually connecting to the big energy out there in the world…And this is the venue, the entry point into connecting with all the rest of life around us.” - Mark Mooney Connect with your body, connect with the world According to Mark Mooney, the embodied or self-actuated self includes a deep connection to all the rest of life on the planet. Achieving this requires an understanding of somatics and ecosomatics. Somatics is a body-centered approach to learning and transformation; we learn through our body to reach our potential. Ecosomatics integrates deep ecology, which acknowledges the inherent value and interconnection of all living things. Tapping into our senses and sensations lays groundwork for both. This week Mark explains how our bodies and our “ historical shaping” inform our strategies for navigating the world. He also explains how connecting with nature enhances our wellbeing - and how to connect with nature even when it’s not easily accessible. Be fully in the experience of life [15:36] “We might as well be in the experience of life as opposed to thinking of life. Joseph Campbell suggested that we're not looking for the secret of the meaning of life. He suggests that we're looking for the experience of life, which means experiencing all of our emotions fully. Being fully aware in the moment and to the things going on around me. [Then the] experience of life just gets better.” Our shape suggests our mood [22:15] “That's an interesting part about shaping. You look at people’s shape, a ‘resigned shape’ is one of the things that people can see the most: kind of collapsed - looks like there's a weight around the neck…it’s part of the defense of ‘let's make myself smaller.’ I'll bring my energy and I'll condense my musculature. I'll actually bring my head down. Now I'm going to be smaller.” Connect to your senses to become present and alive [50:21] “Cultivate your connection to your senses. Go for a walk (and nature is probably going to give you the easiest time to do this) and spend 10 minutes strictly in one sense…so I could walk slowly and just pay attention to what I hear. What's the furthest away thing I can hear? What's the closest thing? What's high pitch, what's low and bass? And just pay attention and listen to the quality of sound.” [54:28] “It opens a world getting connected to our senses on this level, it opens a world that we're just not usually paying any attention to.” Resources mentioned in the episode: Mark Mooney: mooney23@comcast.net ecosomatic.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mooney-6116a49/ Strozzi Institute: https://strozziinstitute.com/ Richard Strozzi-Heckler, PhD: https://strozziinstitute.com/about-2/#richard-strozzi-heckler Deep Ecology + George Sessions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_ecology#:~:text=Deep%20ecology%20is%20an%20environmental,in%20accordance%20with%20such%20ideas. In this conversation we explore two types of embodied change with pioneer Richard Strozzi Heckler. One is the deeper aspect our of felt experience that Richard describes as energetic. As we learn to access this place of being in the moment it increases the wisdom and effectiveness of our doing. The second topic we explore is The Arc of Somatic Transformation, a map describing the journey of embodied change from our current shape to our new shape, created by the Strozzi Institute. Richard Strozzi Heckler is a true pioneer in the field of embodied transformation. He has been coach to CEO's fortune 500 companies, the US government and military and NGO's. He is the author of several books including The Leadership Dojo and The Art of Somatic Coaching.
Knowledge is only a rumour This five minute podcast inspired by the brilliant Mark Devine in his podcast The unbeatable mind when interviewing Richard Strozzi-Heckler and the magical words were uttered: Knowledge is only a rumour until it's in the muscle This blew me away because it both resonated and reminded me of the way we, two of my three sons and I, teach NLP and Hypnosis. To get what we teach in the muscle and when you do you get to master your skills. Our definition, not sure where it came from, of mastery is: Do what you know and do what you know Hearing this interview reinforced that what I am doing is pointing both you and I in the right direction = pointing towards the pose ( a not too previous FMQ) and that my feeling of imposter syndrome (a 2 part longer podcast to come soon) continues to disappear. I hope this too inspires you to do what you know and know what you do so your knowledge grows along with your success because it just keeps getting in the muscle. Let's create those dreams with both confidence and competence :O) Shine brightly Paul Please remember you can leave a comment or email me with questions, requests and feedback. Richard Strozzi-Heckler is an executive coach, author, and the founder of the Strozzi Institute. His published works include The Anatomy of Change and The Leadership Dojo. In this episode of Insights at the Edge, Tami Simon speaks with Richard about the somatic training that he has taught for more than 20 years. Richard explains the process of somatics and the many benefits of tuning into the messages of the body. Tami and Richard talk about the importance of breath awareness and how we can change our relationship to breathing. They discuss the relationship between somatic awareness and good leadership, as well as how to overcome resistance to unpleasant sensations. Finally, Richard and Tami consider the process of somatic change and the sometimes difficult passages that it requires. (71 minutes)
In this 45-minute podcast, Richard Strozzi-Heckler shares the importance of the body in leadership. The eyes, the walk, shoulders, breathing - it plays a massive role in how you are perceived and the confidence that you exude. Richard gives background on the Dojo (the place) and the Soma (the whole body) and its role in leadership, then moves onto the impacts that it has globally (min. 7), the role of the marital arts and how they fit into the “Western” type of leadership (e.g. Peter Drucker (min. 9)) and how morality is a key aspect of leadership. He talks about individual physical aspects - the eyes, breathing, shoulders - and how they communicate and how words count for ONLY 7% of how others interpret you. Yes, a whopping 93% is about your body language….. We then discuss leadership today (min. 23), Rebecca Solnit's “mansplaining” (min. 31) and then close it up with Richard's admission that he sometimes falls into the trap of sizing up someone's soma, becoming more tolerant of the limitations of others and his favorite place in CA. Feed your soul. Keep listening.
This podcast is an analysis and application of Richard Strozzi Heckler's book, In Search of the Warrior Spirit. We speak upon silence, meditation, change, purpose, ego, and other related topics. If you're in a rush, here are some practical takeaways: (1)Practice a form of silence or solitude, (2)Before you question others, question yourself, (3)Awareness is the first step to change, (4)Begin to notice the subtle things you do each day that are counter productive to your goals, (5)Thinking is nothing without action, (6)Be true to yourself (this is explained in the episode).
