In 1966, at the height of World Cup fever, an unassuming little British comedy film came out and caused nary a ripple despite a stellar cast of well-known faces. Michael Bentine stars as Horace Quilby, the titular Sandwich Man, who walks the streets of London and seems to know everyone he passes. Without anything so distracting as a plot the film meanders somewhat and is essentially a series of sketches loosely linked together, an indication perhaps of Bentine's lack of experience in long-form storytelling, having come off the back of his hugely successful television series It's A Square World. The film features a host of well-known figures from the world of comedy including Norman Wisdom, Terry-Thomas, Bernard Cribbins, John Le Mesurier, Fred Emney, Harry H Corbett, Stanley Holloway and Ron Moody and has possibly the most incongruous ending to a film ever! "The House That Dripped Blood" is a 1971 British anthology horror film directed by Peter Duffell and distributed by Amicus Productions. The film is a collection of four short stories, each concerning a series of inhabitants of the eponymous building.   Denholm Elliott appears in the segment "Method for Murder," playing Charles Hillyer. He is joined by Joanna Dunham, who portrays Alice Hillyer, Charles' wife.   Peter Cushing stars in the segment "Waxworks," portraying Philip Grayson. Joss Ackland (known for "Lethal Weapon 2," "Watership Down," and "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey," among over 100 other films) plays Neville Rogers, Grayson's friend. Wolfe Morris appears as the Waxworks Proprietor.   Christopher Lee appears in the segment "Sweets to the Sweet," playing John Reid. He is joined by Nyree Dawn Porter (star of "The Forsyte Saga," who turned down the lead female role in "The Avengers") as Ann Norton, the tutor hired to care for Reid's daughter.   Jon Pertwee features in the segment "The Cloak," portraying Paul Henderson. Ingrid Pitt plays Carla Lind, Henderson's co-star and love interest in the vampire film they're working on.   All of the stories were written by Robert Bloch, best known as the writer of "Psycho." Bloch wrote hundreds of short stories and over 30 novels and was a protégé of H. P. Lovecraft.      Amicus films are sometimes mistaken for the output of Hammer Films due to their similar visual style and use of some of the same actors. However, unlike the period gothic Hammer films, Amicus productions were usually set in the present day.    In the Second World War, Denholm Elliott (famous to this podcast for his titular role as the Signalman in the BBC "Ghost Story for Christmas," podcast episode 21) joined the Royal Air Force, training as a wireless operator/air gunner in 1942. His aircraft was hit by flak and subsequently ditched in the North Sea. Elliott and four of his crewmen survived, and he spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft VIIIb, a prisoner-of-war camp.         Later, Pertwee was attached to the top-secret Naval Intelligence Division, working alongside future James Bond author (and of course Big Chris Lee's cousin) Ian Fleming and reporting directly to Prime Minister Winston Churchill. In 1967, he was chosen by "Dad's Army" producer David Croft for the role of Captain Mainwaring, but Pertwee turned it down. In 1969, Pertwee asked his agent to apply for the role of Doctor Who and was surprised to find he was already on the shortlist. He was the second choice for the role; Ron Moody was the first but was unavailable.    Jon Pertwee later claimed that "The House That Dripped Blood" was meant to be a comedy-horror film and was initially filmed in that way. However, during the production, "the producer came in, took one look at what we are doing, and went raving mad," insisting it be a horror film and not a comedy. This change meant a shift in tone, but the material already filmed remained, resulting in the film dipping in quality and edits to remove comedy elements from Pertwee's sequences. He also admitted that he intentionally based his character on his co-star and friend Christopher Lee. In a scene where Jon's character talks about favourite roles, he says that he prefers Bela Lugosi's Dracula rather than "the chap who plays him nowadays." Warning: our final Dorothy McGuire episode contains very little Dorothy McGuire in our discussion of the films, although we also compare our Top 10 performances and give a final analysis of how her career was shaped by its cultural moment. However, we still find lots to talk about in the oddball final feature films in which she appeared, particularly George Stevens' The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), a Diatessaron or harmonizing of the Christian New Testament Gospels. We discuss what Stevens chooses to emphasize and de-emphasize in the life of Jesus and the effectiveness or otherwise of his choice of actors. Then we turn our attention (briefly) to Flight of the Doves (1971), a British children's movie showcasing a multicultural Ireland, notable for its ham actor villain, a curious ressentiment figure portrayed by Ron Moody. HOWEVER, the wait should be well worth it because this episode is an absolute cracker, it really is. good old fashioned twists and turns in one of the most eighties broadcasts there's been to date. we even include some of the soundtrack... its hideous, but very funny. As always we mix the events of the show with our own chatter, this episode includes an idea that IKEA could adopt, a new game show, an analysis of Catchphrase and a discussion about how good actually are Ant and Dec... compelling stuff. Get tuned in and don't forget the 5 stars on Itunes! thanks guys, enjoy.

*** no sooner had I promised a twofer weekend, i caught some sort of bug and was out of action for ages!!! Thats all changed now and i've managed to edit episodes 13 and 14 of season 2 in quick succession... Christmas has officially come early as i can now bring us back up to date in the series... think of it as a break while the snooker championships were on. well they've finished now and i imagine ronnie o'sullivan won... here's your podcasts you beautiful people**** WELCOME BACK... here's a welcome return for one of the Tales' best loved characters - MR BOTIBOL - written and introduced by Dahl as per normal (at this stage at least) it's a tale about delusions of grandeur i guess. have a listen, see what you think... but that's not all because me and rob also discuss other stuff as it comes to our mind. for example: theres the time chris pretended to be the guitarist in Mike Oldfield's in dulci jubilo, rob recalls pretending to be mick jones from the clash, buying shakin' stevens' t-shirts, visiting harry potter studios and eating fake food and having arguments with yourself preparing for a confrontation. amongst other things... and THEY'RE the LEAST interesting things in the podcast. GIVE IT A LISTEN, MAKE SURE YOU SUBSCRIBE, RATE US 5 STARS and SORRY for the delay

*** THE LOST EPISODE *** right then.. massive apologies. this episode is the second attempt to document this tale from the Tales of the Unexpected. you see, after the discovery that the computer corrupted the version that was saved, we realised we had to record again. and finding time has been tough. so, here's the second attempt - hopefully it'll be fun because it was a fucking bitch watching this episode again. Look - the wait is going to be worth it though - this episode has the LONGEST EVER intro to it. and listening back, it actually sounds better that the one we lost. i'll not ramble on any more. next weekend i'll be up early to get another twofer in... for now though, here's Genesis and Catastrophe by Roald Dahl

Hello, welcome back, you're in for a treat because after a 7 minute intro, we get stuck into a sweet story about a confidence trickster, which as always, has a twisty ending that you probably wasn't expecting. With chaos included Now then... It's another Dahl story and although this is touted as a true story, he says that every week so maybe thats just bullshit. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt - sit back and relax and listen to the chaos unfold... and long the way, we'll discuss how confusing Brexit is, an idea that Dolly Parton should maybe explore and the incorrect use of the word 'Hashtag'- and if you want to see a rant by Chris, head over to the Grumpy At 40 youtube channel - Enjoy

The Tales Of The Unexpected Podcast

Yes we're back, it's been 14 days since your twofer weekend - make sure you listen to them... not that the Tale of the Unexpected episodes follow on from one another, but i'm certain that these podcasts are getting more listen-to-able as time goes on. *********** SO... What's today's all about? It's called Taste and delves into the world of wine, the aroma of dinner parties in the 80's, hints of potential child exploitation (only 11% VOL) and as always overtones of suspense. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL... if our attempts to pun our way through these notes have failed, we also chat about the voice of Janet Ellis, being part of the Why Don't You gang, the smell of a goose playing a bassoon and why 1985 is the best year for movies. WOW, what an episode. *********
