This week we saw Glen Keane (the master animator behind Ariel from "The Little Mermaid") draw in Virtual Reality, and then Batman et al beat up sea creatures (including Ariel) in the new Batmetal animated music video. We finally get to see what "Wabbit," Bugs Bunny's new series, will look like and learn about a Spongebob Squarepants musical and a possible Avengers-style teamup movie of your favorite 90s NickToons. These next two episodes are a little special, and not just because they precede our 100th episode LIVE show! With Stephen traveling this week, two episodes were recorded in one session. This week Stephen and Rob tackle the question of "collaboration" and what that means for us animators. This topic seemed relevant since we're working on another Podcastimation for release at the end of the month in conjunction with our 100th episode. We cover some of the factors which go into finding someone to collaborate with, how to avoid some of the possible pitfalls like a difference in vision, and review examples of popular artistic collaborations. We're talking all Video Game related stories this week but start with a question: is "Animations" a word? Nintendo said they want more control over their movie properties, fan-film producer Adi Shankar (Judge Dredd: Superfiend, Power/Rangers) and Fred Seibert (Frederator) want to make a dark Castlevania animated mini-series, and Rovio cuts a third of their work force. This week we also play a game where Stephen reads out all the video game movies that have been made thus far and Rob and Pat try to guess what their Rotten Tomatoes rating is... I know this is cliche, but the answers may surprise you! The audience question this week is a great one about what animated series we would cancel in order to revive another. It was an interesting week to be a kid. While "Sesame Street" moves to HBO, "The Lion Guard" is coming to the small screen in a beautifully animated new series and Stephen saw a family-friendly animated short collection in a local theater, featuring the works of nine animators from around the world. If you happen to be an "adult-kid," the red-band trailer for "Hell & Back" was posted and the Hollywood Antitrust lawsuit is back in play... OK, this week's theme is stretched a little bit but it did lead to some VERY interesting discussions! There was technical talk over "The Lion Guard" animation style, social discussion over "Sesame Street" on a premium cable channel, and a bit of budget talk regarding the recommended reading this week (see below). We finally got to see what Chris Farley's SHREK would've been like in an early story reel which surfaced this week. His passing in 1997 was a big shock to us so there's a lot of discussion surrounding this topic this week. But that's not all because there's a "Bob the Builder" reboot with a new character design who looks... symmetrical, a new Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show coming to Netflix which is 2D (!) and the rights have been secured to make a Dungeons & Dragons movie. That last story also contains the skit this week is Stephen reading excerpts from Ice-T's description of his experience recording the D&D audio book (starting at 1:03:24)... so enjoy that! There are technical discussions as well surrounding the new Windows 10 and a blog post which tried (and failed) to properly compare the budgets of live-action VFX to that of fully CG Animated Films. The questions this week comes from a listener wondering if we're going to CTNx this year, which ticket we bought, and if that's right for her. TMNT is getting a 2D animated special from Titmouse Inc, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" Disney XD series shows some serious action with its new trailer and Chinese animation shows it's on the rise in a big way with "Rock Dog." There were also two passings we mention this week: wrestler and actor "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, and animation historian and reporter John Culhane. In other news, apparently there's a PEZ movie coming (PEZ like the candy not PES the animator... which would be fascinating and wanted). While there weren't a lot of media type animation stories (except for The Good Dinosaur trailer which is covered), that didn't stop this episode from turning into one of the more interesting ones filled will discussions over the roll cartoons play in a child's development, the nature of copyright in the internet age, why the Surface Pro 4 is a sign that Microsoft is doing more for the creatives of today than Apple... oh and there's an Emoji movie being developed... which ALSO turned into an interesting discussion over public domain stories! An animated bomb called "Klaus" was dropped on the community this week screaming that hand-drawn animation can visually compete with CG in today's climate. And then the creator, Sergio Pablos, says that he'll talk about the techniques used to create the short trailer at an Annecy talk. That's about as close to a mic-drop as we get in the animation field... so we talk about it... a lot! So here's what happened this week. The "Disney reuses animation" video mashup went around again and people got really negative. Harry Shearer's future with The Simpsons is in question and people got really bitter. The Simpsons released a couch gag featuring Rick & Morty and people called for an early termination for The Simpsons like it was worthless. I recorded this episode with Rob today... about 3 hours ago. There's basically no editing on this episode and that's why the title is "You Get What You Get." "What is a Creative?" That's the theme of this week's podcast where Stephen and Rob are flying solo (duo?) on another 'hot cocoa show.' Check out the outline below with timestamps if you want to skip to a particular topic. We talk about why our career (animation) and creative careers in general are a bit different and sometimes hard to relate to by those that aren't in this type of field, what type of pressures we're under and how we cope with them, and the all important topic of wrestling work and personal projects at the same time. What is the deeeallll with objective and subjective criteria?? Drinking game to NOT do... sip whenever I say objective or subjective. Yea, don't do that. My hope for this week's episode is that we articulate why being in a creative field is so weird and seemingly incomprehensible to even those close to us and why that may not matter (and that's a good thing). I kept this episode clean so if you want to send this to someone who you feel doesn't understand you, wants to, and you don't have the words or time to try explaining it... feel free! And let us know what you think about this topic in the comments section below. How do you understand your career? How do you deal with the unique pressures it presents? There aren't many main stories this week because of the high likelyhood of fakery (April Fools was a few days before this recording). But what we DO have was completely submitted by you listeners so thanks for the help! Disney is making another live-action movie off one of their animation properties, Adam West and Burt Ward are Batman and Robin again, there was a music video directed by Sylvain Chomet, and the main conversation is about the difference between a "job" and a "career," prompted by Will Finn's blog post. We also talk about the ATTACK ON TITAN live-action teaser, INCREDIBLES 2 plot, and the announcements of a California Raisins movie as well as Joseph Gordon-Levitt starring in and producing a Fraggle Rock film. We LOVED doing the special episodes but it's great to talk about animation news stories again and we want to know what YOU think about them too! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! This week we reached out to other animators and creatives to give us their worst experiences in freelance that they could share with us like ghost stories around a campfire. Spooooooky! The idea is that if you're thinking of getting into freelance or can relate to some of these stories, they can serve as a heads-up on what you might encounter and/or how to prevent them. See? It's fun AND educational. I'm very proud of this episode so I hope you enjoy it and get lots of great information out of it! CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment! This week we have a very special interview: Alan Becker, creator of the hit "Animator vs Animation" stick-fight series joins us to talk about his experience with Kickstarter, what happened when his first short went viral, and how he actually does the things he does! There's a lot of really great stuff here for young and old animators from the Indie scene, especially when he starts talking about when and how he had to navigate the murky waters of a viral hit. And be sure to check out his work embedded below! CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment! Annotations: (04:10) Why do a fourth in the Animator vs Animation series? We wanted to do something special for our anniversary episode, so it was LIVE. We also received a bunch of voicemails from you which made us so happy! But the fates seem to have other things in mind when we had traffic, timezone confusion, and a wrecked computer thrown at us. In a very RubberOnion fashion, though, we decided that computers be damned... we were going to do this! Stephen and Rob huddled around a tablet and Pat kept the stories rolling and we produced an episode of more fun and excitement than we've done in 50 episodes while also sounding the absolute worst. It was like the grindhouse cinema of podcasts! Thank you all again SO much for sending in your voicemails! It was such a big hit, that we've decided to leave that option open for all future episodes. If you have a question for us, a comment, story, or even a rant about something you think we got wrong... call the number on our CONTACT page here and leave a voicemail! Also, as far as we're announcing things: HALLOWEEN FAN ART CONTEST! Submit your fan art of the podcast to our FACEBOOK page before the end of the month (October) and the winner gets caricatured and put in our next podcastimation AND a mini-interview on the podcast! Winners are decided by the three of us and is obviously subjective but we will talk about each one on the podcast and feature them in a gallery on the facebook page. We can't wait to see them!
