Escape rooms let your family cooperate in new and interesting ways. But do you prefer a physical, in-person escape room, a video game, or a board game experience? 0:00:00 Fact for 418 HTTP code 418: “I’m a teapot” Sponsor Message If you want help planning for your kid’s college education, set up a time for a free 15-minute call by going to firstmovefinancial.com/familygamers. 0:05:00 What We’ve Been Playing Embers (our review)Lands of AmazementAspensVerdant Arizona 0:12:50 The Family Gamers Community We’re so happy to welcome new members! You can join the community on Facebook too. 0:13:30 #Backtalk You shared your purging regrets on Facebook and the #backtalk channel of the Discord. 0:19:25 Escape Rooms Physical escape rooms – we’ve done a few. Very cool but can feel high pressure. They’re great to do in a group, letting everybody work on different things. Doing it as a family is expensive! Video games are a much cheaper way to capture this style really well: Portal, The Room, Escape Academy Board Game “Escape Rooms” These range in size and playtime. Some are more puzzley, some are more narrative-driven. But any of them can be a great family experience. And we have reviewed a bunch of them – we’ll talk about six series here: EXIT series – Fairly immersive, with a plot and setting that hangs together. Everything you need is in the box. Wide variety of puzzles to write on, manipulate, cut, etc. But comes with a downside – that wide variety means you almost always run into a puzzle in the game that is not figure-out-able (for us). They come in a huge range of difficulty, including several that are appropriate to do with younger kids who are just barely reading. Unlike the other games in this list, we think they’re best with more than 2 players. There are also EXIT Kids games now! (Check out the EXIT games we’ve reviewed.) Unlock series – These require an app. Other than the app, completely card-based and re-settable to pass on to a friend to try. These also have a juvenile line now – Unlock Kids. Our experience has been really uneven. Some really great (Wizard of Oz, Star Wars). Others are just really weird, with puzzles don’t make sense. We generally recommend these, but use caution. Holiday Hijinks – probably our favorite compact escape-room type game. Packs a ton of puzzles into 18 cards and a web app. Full of puns, trivia, and holiday cultural references. Still best for very small groups, since there’s such a small space to work in. Family friendly, although younger kids will probably be frustrated that they don’t have the trivia knowledge to contribute unless they’re very knowledgeable about the holiday. (Check out our reviews and interviews about Holiday Hijinks.) Deckscape – feels like a “choose your own adventure” narrative. Mostly a deck of cards, but with a few accessories that made it more immersive. Puzzles could not be attempted more than once, which made the choices feel high-stakes. Best with 2-3 players, because you’re only looking at a few cards at a time – unless you’re willing to take your time and pass them around the table. (We reviewed Deckscape: The Mystery of El Dorado.) Backstories – not really an escape room, more of a narrative adventure. Work through decisions one at a time as a group. But not only re-settable, it’s replayable, with branching paths and different endings depending on the decisions made! Not exactly family-friendly. Lots of violence and some death. (Check out our Backstories reviews.) Star Trek: Cryptic – as Trek fans we really loved this one. Work through three different “chapters” in a Starfleet officer’s life, with very thematic puzzles. Pretty much re-settable, but you’ll get great value out of this one even if you only play it once – it takes 3-4 hours to do the whole thing, split into several sessions. Coded Chronicles (we reviewed Scooby Doo & The Goonies games) – also very narrative driven. But spreads out the responsibility to progress the narrative to all the players! There are multiple books to read in different character “voices”, even though the team is making decisions together. Also re-settable. Very family-friendly, even for kids who are unfamiliar with Scooby Doo or The Goonies. 0:42:00 New Backtalk Question Have you ever done an in-person escape room? If so, what did you think of it? While poking through a box of old magazines at Rubber Chicken Comics, we found something called Superstars of Soul. It's an odd little educational workbook from 1986, and it taught vocabulary and reading comprehension to the kids while they learned about their favorite soul acts. So we're flipping through the whole book today, and our conversation includes: Chaka Khan on The Love Boat! Prince punching a guy! Coffee for the Pointer Sisters! Jeffrey Osborne meets the Big Blue Bug! Hall meets Oates in a freight elevator! And lots more. (Is this just our excuse to talk about Irene Cara for two episodes in a row? Perhaps...) Also: Kevin is talking Scooby Doo on A Podcask of Amontillado, and we're celebrating Pi Day with an irrational pie. A Podcask of Amontillado - the Scooby Doo episode! And our regular links... Send a textIn this episode of the Cops and Writers Podcast bonus series, retired Milwaukee Police Sergeant Patrick O'Donnell reads Chapter 14, "Scooby-Doo Where Are You?" from his upcoming book:Police Stories: The Rookie Years - True Crime, Chaos, & Life as a Big City CopYou've probably seen it in movies or TV shows: a cop arrives at a crime scene, a victim is barely clinging to life, and with their final breath, they reveal who killed them. Case closed. Roll credits.Reality is messier. This is a short chapter, but one of the most unforgettable stories in the book. It's about a dying man's last words—and how Patrick can never watch Scooby-Doo the same way again.Jimmy T was one of the genuinely nice cops on the late shift. Five-foot-nine, built like a prizefighter, always had a smile on his face. When he shook Patrick's hand and introduced himself, nobody had ever been that nice to the FNG before. He called Patrick "Paddy" from that night on.They were working plainclothes backup in an unmarked Crown Vic when they heard twenty gunshots ring out. They found a man lying in the middle of the street, steam rising from multiple bullet holes in his chest. The paramedic shook his head 'no'—this guy wasn't going to make it.Patrick needed a dying declaration: "You're going to die. Who killed you?"The man's last words: "Scooby-Doo, Scooby-Doo, shot me!"To this day, Patrick can't watch Scooby-Doo without thinking of that night. All stories are real. Names and locations have been changed where necessary.
In this edition of The Update Journal, I try to solve a mystery even Scooby-Doo might struggle with: what exactly was The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo, and why does it feel like a fever dream from 1985? Then the tone shifts—just a little—as we look back six years to the day the world basically pressed the pause button, when sports stopped, travel bans began, and suddenly everyone became an amateur epidemiologist. And finally, in Brandon's Take, we'll tackle the great generational divide: snow days. For students, it's a magical winter holiday. For staff? It's “working from home,” which mostly means answering a couple emails while standing in front of the fridge wondering if this technically counts as productivity. Expect nostalgia, mild existential reflection, and the realization that adulthood has completely ruined snow days. ❄️In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Wednesday, Two former NYPD officers who prosecutors say stole a brothel key and then robbed and groped a sex worker are now facing federal charges after their initial state charges were dismissed on a technicality.A Honduran migrant was arrested for randomly shoving two strangers — including an 83-year-old man — onto Upper East Side subway tracks over the weekend, according to authorities. And major storms whipped up tornadoes in parts of Illinois and Indiana that leveled homes, killing at least two people and injuring others, and another round of rain, hail and strong winds made its way through the region, authorities say.

A week after the Super Bowl and we finally got The Mandalorian and Grogu trailer, took long enough. Also Warner Bros seems to finally relent and gives Paramount 7 days to try again. If the Simpsons ever ends, which is probably more likely than you think, it wont spend time on a grand finale. PlayStation held a state of play last week, and it was heavy on Kratos, plus if you are waiting on a steam deck, blame AI.
Three hosts. One haunted house. Zero answers. This episode of Straitjacket Talk dives headfirst into House (1977)—the psychedelic, bananas Japanese horror cult classic that makes Jaws, Evil Dead, and Scooby-Doo feel like they got tossed in a blender.
Send a textA rye cube, a lemon twist, and a splash of absinthe set the night in motion. We open with the Sazerac, swapping notes between Boatwright's at Port Orleans and our own New Orleans–style build, then take that same love of craft into a wild thought experiment: which non‑Disney characters and worlds would thrive under Disney's storytelling? We start with the legends. Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes spark a debate about timeless comedy, park characters, and the kind of physical gags that make queues feel alive. From there, we slide into Scooby‑Doo hijinks, SpongeBob's Bikini Bottom, and Bedrock's bronto‑size charm—proof that retro IP can still deliver modern magic. Gaming and anime icons raise the stakes: Mario's jump‑happy momentum, Pikachu's collect‑and‑trade culture, Sonic's speed run energy, and Hello Kitty's soft‑power merch. Each brings interactivity, replay value, and social fun that match how guests actually play parks today. We push beyond cartoons into cinematic sandboxes. Imagine a mid‑century Mad Men lounge with proper cocktails and impeccable woodwork. Picture Ghostbusters as a show‑driven effects playground, a Die Hard‑inspired tower drop with narrative beats, and a Jurassic World zone that sells scale without screen fatigue. Then we go epic: Middle‑earth as a multi‑land dream with the Shire's warmth, Rivendell's serenity, and Mordor's percussion and heat; Wizard of Oz for technicolor wonder and storm‑tossed transitions; Willy Wonka for edible illusions, fizzy‑lifting laughs, and music that hums through the pathways. Along the way we weigh Transformers, King Kong's Monarch universe, Hunger Games, Smurfs, Popeye, Garfield, Jetsons, and G.I. Joe—asking where Disney's “story per minute” advantage can turn good IP into unforgettable place. It's part cocktail hour, part imagineering session, and all heart for the details that make parks sing: scent, light, texture, music, and a wink of humor. Tap play, then tell us your top three non‑Disney IPs you'd hand to Disney and why. If you're vibing with the show, subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a quick review—it helps more Disney lovers find our little corner of magic. Cheers!
This week on Forgotten Cinema: Lead Up, the Mikes continue their road toward "Scream 7" with "Scream 3", the most divisive entry in the franchise.Coming off "Scream 2", the highest-reviewed film in the series, "Scream 3" holds the unfortunate distinction of being the worst reviewed. Mike Field still enjoys the movie, but it is his least favorite of the franchise so far. His biggest issue comes down to the killer reveal, which he finds underwhelming, especially when you factor in the original script, the late production change to a single killer, and the moments where you can clearly tell the film was staged for two Ghostfaces.Mike Butler also enjoys the film, especially the Gale & Dewey relationship, but shares some of those frustrations. He would have preferred the climax to stay within the Hollywood studio setting that the movie spends so much time establishing, rather than shifting to a Scooby-Doo-style mansion. He also argues that Patrick Dempsey being revealed as the killer and Sidney's half-brother would have made far more sense both narratively and thematically.Despite its flaws, "Scream 3" is still a fun watch. The kills are inventive, the meta elements continue to evolve, and Parker Posey is a standout as the actress portraying Gale Weathers in the Stab films within the film. It may be messy and compromised, but it still understands the spirit of the franchise and delivers plenty to enjoy. So join the Mikes as the go through each film in the "Scream" saga leading up to the release of "Scream 7".Are you sad we never got to see a full episode of "100% Cotton"? Don't Kill the Messenger with movie research expert Kevin Goetz
Send Kevin a Text MessageIn this episode of Don't Kill the Messenger, host Kevin Goetz sits down with Academy Award-winning producer Charles "Chuck" Roven, the co-founder of Atlas Entertainment, one of Hollywood's most enduring and successful production companies. Across four decades, Chuck has built a producing career defined by creative ambition and commercial scale — including five of the 100 top-grossing films of all time. From his early struggles to winning the Academy Award for Oppenheimer, Chuck's journey reveals how smart dealmaking, creative instinct, and relentless tenacity shaped one of the most impressive producing legacies in modern Hollywood. From Czechoslovakia to Cinderella Homes (03:22): Chuck's father escaped post-war Europe and built a real estate empire in Los Angeles, teaching Chuck the principle of horizontal business.Dawn Steel (08:16): Chuck recounts meeting his first wife, Dawn Steel, who revolutionized her way into Hollywood through merchandising hits like Gucci toilet paper before becoming Paramount's president of production. The 90-Day Escrow Deal (20:48): Instead of optioning Dick Tracy, Chuck negotiated a 90-day escrow deal to "check the title," wrote a script, and sold it to Universal.12 Monkeys and the Art of International Financing (30:34): Chuck explains how he assembled a consortium of international partners to co-finance Terry Gilliam's $32 million film. The Phone Call That Led to Batman Begins (36:30): After producing the hit Scooby-Doo, Chuck received a call inviting him to partner with an up-and-coming director named Christopher Nolan on a little project called Batman Begins.Bringing Oppenheimer to Nolan and Winning the Oscar (37:29): Chuck recounts how he brought the Oppenheimer project to Christopher Nolan. The film earned 11 Oscar nominations and Chuck's first Best Picture win.Making Mercy (42:24): Chuck describes developing the "Screen Life" concept into the thriller Mercy, featuring an AI judge with access to every camera and computer. The Value of Test Screenings (46:34): Despite working with directors like Christopher Nolan who prefer friends-and-family screenings, Chuck explains why recruited audience testing remains invaluable.Chuck Roven's producing philosophy combines his father's business lessons with an unwavering respect for the audience, proving that hunger, passion, and smart dealmaking can result in four decades of Hollywood success. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave us a review and share. A man from a not-so surprising state has a surprising amount of alcohol in his system, the Fighting Illini are making a big investment in their football program, Parker learns about Scooby-Doo
What starts as a polite podcast immediately face-plants into profanity, pop-culture archaeology, and three grown men asking the most important question of our time: What would TJ Hooker do? From ventriloquists on the radio to Emmy-night humiliation rituals, from ICE raids and clerical angst to Scooby-Doo's latent homicidal potential. Along the way, our hosts lovingly argue about bad uniforms, worse TV, feral cats, frozen smiles, Hollywood's slow collapse, and why every great American moral crisis can (and should) be resolved by referencing Columbo, All in the Family, or a half-remembered episode of Different Strokes.
