In this episode, we're joined by Hugo Docking, a filmmaker and the co-founder of Spare Flesh, a stop motion animation and puppetry studio based in the UK. His work is known for its grotesque puppets, dark musical shorts, and incredible craftsmanship that turns stop motion into body horror and twisted comedy. Together, we chatted about Hugo's introduction to horror through Salad Fingers, disturbing British children's media, and how COVID brought him back to stop motion filmmaking. We also learned all about the universe of Spare Flesh and how a passion slowly became a career. We dove into films like Moving Parts and To The Brink, the art of mixing mediums, and creating work in a world of chaos and uncertainty. We absolutely loved our conversation with Hugo and learning about his incredible mesh of horror, comedy, and animation, and we're certain you will too, so … COME HANG OUT!!!      This week we close out the month with a gang of puppets moving one frame at a time.     In 1957, a rare Sumatran rat monkey was smuggled into New Zealand and put on display. When meek Lionel's domineering mother is bit by the rat monkey, he soon finds himself desperately trying to contain a zombie outbreak. The last of Peter Jackson's early splatter comedies, Braindead (aka Dead Alive).     Norman Babcock can speak to the dead. As the anniversary of the town's witch trial approaches, Norman beings having nightmarish visions of the past. Soon he has to decide if he will continue the yearly traditions of soothing a very restless spirit or choose a new approach. The second feature from Laika, ParaNorman.     Grace Pudel is a young girl in 1970s Australia. When her father dies, she and her twin brother, Gilbert, are sent to different foster families on opposite sides of the country. Despite Gilbert writing letters promising their reunion, Grace is unable to form connections, which leads to her hording all the snail-themed products she finds. The latest feature from minimalist tragicomedy auteur Adam Elliot, Memoir of a Snail.     Iria, an extraterrestrial bounty hunter, and her AI sidekick, Bob, arrive on Earth to capture a fugitive. They plan to hold their confrontation in The Zone, a virtual environment, to lessen damage to the natives. Unfortunately, this draws a lot of power and pulls a pair of electric company technicians into the fight. The second feature from tokusatsu mastermind Keita Amemiya- Zeiram.     All that and Tyler is still euphoric, Craig gets euphemistic, Dave uses some eucaine, and Kevin debates adding a eucleidae to his woodland army. Stop motion film 'Tulip' reimagines Thumbelina in our own backyard

The animated short film ‘Tulip’ opens as many stories do - with "once upon a time." The tale might sound familiar. It begins with a woman finding a tiny baby girl, curled up at the center of a blooming flower. Soon, Tulip climbs out her window and sets off on an adventure in her own backyard – meeting the many creatures that call it home as she tries to find her way back to her own. The film is a take on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale Thumbelina. Each scene is awash in bright colors and textures. Every part of Tulip - from the characters to the sets and backgrounds - is made by hand, most of it in felt, and brought to life using the time-intensive technique of stop motion animation. And the lush, green backgrounds may look familiar - the co-directors behind the film are based here in Western Washington. Tulip was originally released in 2020. It screened at film festivals like the Annecy International Animation Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival. Now, for the first time, anyone can watch the short on YouTube. Guests: Andrea Love is a stop motion animator based in Port Townsend. She was co-director for Tulip, and also headed up fabrication & animation. Phoebe Wahl is an illustrator and children’s book author based in Bellingham. She was the co-director, lead set and character designer, and script writer for Tulip. Czechtember 2025 wraps with Jan Švankmajer's Conspirators of Pleasure (1996), a delirious, dialogue-free plunge into fetish and surrealism. Mike teams up with filmmaker Jim Vendiola and critic Samm Deighan to unravel the tangled lives of six Prague eccentrics whose private obsessions—ranging from papier-mâché contraptions to elaborate role-play—collide in hilariously unsettling ways. The result is a darkly comic meditation on desire, ritual, and the pleasures of the bizarre, filtered through Švankmajer's singular stop-motion, tactile textures, and Surrealist imagination. We're joined by Peter Hames, editor of The Cinema of Jan Svankmajer: Dark Alchemy.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! It's September, so that means it's time for our “Mechtember” series, where we cover movies involving all things robotic!! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and guest Bill Mueller discuss Keita Amemiya's 1995 robo-showdown, Mechanical Violator Hakaider!Mechanical violation! Awkward sound mixing! A glowing brain! Cool, glowing hands! An evil, robotic Angel! Excessive use of smoke! Dramatic flower burning! Subtext so overt it's effectively hypertext! Amazing use of dummies! Soldiers that look like the Minions from Despicable Me! Imaginative use of an 80s panel van! Extreme head violence! Bleeding walls! Unexpected arm removal! All this and more in a movie that's possibly TOO ambitious, with incredible designs and special effects, that feels like it was made for fans of RoboCop, Power Rangers, and The Guyver! In addition, Bill shares his spoiler-free thoughts on the original Terminator, while Alex does the same for 1989's Tango & Cash, and the Hong Kong action classics, the Iron Angels trilogy! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The Death Don't Do Fiction podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! We add another addendum to the Merry Marvel Movie March with a review of 1992's Marvel-adjacent film "Doctor Mordrid". We all agree there could have been more stop-motion animation and (we can't believe we're saying this) more close-up magic. But it does have a wizard duel, so it's got that going for it! Mom hated THE PERFECTION and there was no love lost between Mac & STOPMOTION.CW for mention/suggestion of child rape in THE PERFECTION and childhood trauma in STOPMOTION.Both films are about mental illness and both fail spectacularly in its depiction. THE PERFECTION could have been a joyous, campy romp, but it is too careless with its subject matter and results in a horribly distasteful mess.STOPMOTION has some wonderful stop motion sequences which may be worth the price of admission, but even with its short run time, it overstays its welcome. This was a fun conversation about two repellent films.Next time we are covering two films that deal with class warfare: READY OR NOT & THE PLATFORM. Then we dive deep into the stunning handmade world of Carpathia—filled with puppets, animatronics, painted maps, 1930s lenses, and big heart.Isaiah shares what it was like working with Willem Dafoe and Helena Zengel, how he blends mythology and music, and why he believes films should feel like moving paintings instead of hyper-reality.We left this conversation genuinely inspired; Isaiah is someone bringing magic back to movies in a way we haven't seen in a long time.If you're into bold storytelling, weird creatures, and fantasy flicks from the '80s and '90s, this one's for you so...COME HANG OUT!!!Follow Us on Social Media:Instagram & Threads: @mostlyhorrorpodTikTok & Twitter/X: @mostlyhorrorSteve: @stevenisaverage on all socialsSean: @hypocrite.ink on IG/TikTok, @hypocriteink on Twitter/XEnjoy this episode?
