Send us a textWoHos!Welp. This week we looked at two films, all right. Mom hated THE PERFECTION and there was no love lost between Mac & STOPMOTION.CW for mention/suggestion of child rape in THE PERFECTION and childhood trauma in STOPMOTION.Both films are about mental illness and both fail spectacularly in its depiction. THE PERFECTION could have been a joyous, campy romp, but it is too careless with its subject matter and results in a horribly distasteful mess.STOPMOTION has some wonderful stop motion sequences which may be worth the price of admission, but even with its short run time, it overstays its welcome. This was a fun conversation about two repellent films.Next time we are covering two films that deal with class warfare: READY OR NOT & THE PLATFORM. Then we dive deep into the stunning handmade world of Carpathia—filled with puppets, animatronics, painted maps, 1930s lenses, and big heart.Isaiah shares what it was like working with Willem Dafoe and Helena Zengel, how he blends mythology and music, and why he believes films should feel like moving paintings instead of hyper-reality.We left this conversation genuinely inspired; Isaiah is someone bringing magic back to movies in a way we haven't seen in a long time.If you're into bold storytelling, weird creatures, and fantasy flicks from the '80s and '90s, this one's for you so...COME HANG OUT!!!Follow Us on Social Media:Instagram & Threads: @mostlyhorrorpodTikTok & Twitter/X: @mostlyhorrorSteve: @stevenisaverage on all socialsSean: @hypocrite.ink on IG/TikTok, @hypocriteink on Twitter/XEnjoy this episode? A wrong turn leads them into the mysterious forests of Norse legend, where an ancient evil exists and stalks them at every turn".We talk a lot about how much we preferred the novel of THE RITUAL much more than the film.

Chances are that nothing from the Poohniverse will be in our favorite movies of any year. But that will not stop us from talking about it every chance we get. Blood and Honey may have burned us so badly we have not even considered watching another entry, but maybe the combined powers of the twisted versions of Peter Pan, Tigger, and Mary Poppins will be enough to save the burgeoning franchise.Until Dawn is the flip side. It is a creative video game that brings audiences into its world better than some of the horror movies it is influenced by. The only surprise is that it took this long to turn it into a movie. Early test screenings have been positive. Unless you ever played the video game. There were a lot of great genre releases in 2024. The Substance has rightfully received the lion's share of attention. Along with the fantastic performances from Moore and Margaret Qualley, it has a great story and fantastic gore. It is not just one of the best horror movies of the year; it can stand up to anything that can out during the year. Independent horror had a record setting year. Late Night With the Devil became the biggest release in the history of IFC. It is a unique take on found footage and has some of the most memorable moments of the year. Thanks in part to its clever marketing campaign, Longlegs became a surprise box office hit. We talk about why it still resonates with us and what it means to genre cinema in general. Some of the best horror films of the year flew under the radar. Stopmotion featured some of the best storytelling of the year, Realm of Satan is a unique look at Satanists, and Falling Stars is a modern folk horror tale that is relatable and creepy. We have a lot to talk about on this week's show. Adventures in Movies! is a part of the Morbidly Beautiful Podcast Network. Morbidly Beautiful is your one stop shop for all your horror needs. As 2024 comes to an end, we look in a rearview mirror filled with some amazing films, especially ones that came out this year. Filmmakers around the world wowed us with creative stories, intriguing plots and outstanding techniques. It is definitely a great time to be a horror fan. 2024 was another stellar year for us at the podcast, where we covered a wide variety of subjects, from Bigfoot to Amicus Films, from Women Directors to Al Adamson & Sam Sherman, to more obscure topics like German Expressionism, and much more. We also had an astonishing lineup of special guests including Severin's David Gregory, Vinegar Syndrome's Archivist Oscar Becher, HorrorHound's Aaron Crowell, and Will Morris from Oscarbate and The Music Box Theatre, just to name a few. One thing that continues through this year is our constant love and admiration for those that have made some long lasting impact on the genre, and our constant striving to help share that love with our listeners. Nothing excites us more than hearing that we've turned someone on to a film or filmmaker or even sub-genre that they might have not experienced before. And you can be damned sure that we plan to continue that in 2025. Tristan generously shares his extensive knowledge of stop-motion animation with us, and we spend the majority of the episode learning the ins and outs of shooting 9-inch puppets in a warehouse. Tristan reveals how he (and up to 50+ active units) prepares the lights and cameras for scenes in such a way that doesn't impede upon the work of the animators physically bringing the characters to life, and we discuss the effectiveness of applying the principles and practices of live-action cinematography into the world of animation. In addition to his work in stop-motion animation, Tristan has contributed to live-action projects such as POOR THINGS and the uniquely realized LOVING VINCENT, and he reflects on his experiences in both projects. In the back half of our conversation, Tristan shares how he really felt working with director Wes Anderson on FANTASTIC MR. FOX and ISLE OF DOGS, from learning how to work together on the former to engaging in a battle of wits over the feasibility of deep focus in the latter, and we learn in which films Tristan sees the most of himself. At the end, we close our conversation with an appreciation for the enduring quality of that which is handmade over that which is merely manufactured.  - This episode is sponsored by Aputure
