Tyler and guest Rae Gray (@heyraegray Chicago based Actor) take on 101 Dalmatians in honor of this Friday's release of CRUELLA. With arguably, the best opening credits of all time--this jazzy and terrifying classic still slaps. First off, we need to see the tax returns of Cruella De Vil--where are her funds coming from and can we get some? Also we are back in London because Disney loves a London aesthetic and so do we. Little did we know that in this film, Disney gave us the dating advice we never knew we needed: just calm down and marry the guy. Things of note: Nanny also voices MAD MADAM MIM SO WE ARE SOLD. And in case anyone was wondering and THIS IS NOT up for debate--Cruella De Vil is the HBIC, the legend of all legends, whose evil sidekick appears only in the form of her lime green cigarette smoke. With the news surfacing that Ubisoft is going to be focusing on free to play experiences, the question remians as to how much is going to affect their rest of their games moving forward. Ubisoft assures those who are worried that THIS IS NOT the case, that their AAA titles will be unaffected. What do you think? Alan Chazaro uses poetry to explore Bay Area culture, his love for hip-hop, and machismo stereotypes. We first talked in 2019 about his first poetry collection, This Is Not a Frank Ocean Cover Album. Since then, Chazaro moved to Mexico, travelled through Central and South America, and then, ultimately, returned to the Bay Area. Chazaro has also been dabbling in the journalism trade-- with stories that range from the first woman to play professional men's basketball to the tale of a notable Oakland A's hot dog vendor. Chazaro has even freelanced for KQED. In addition to all of that and teaching English, Chazaro just published his second book, Pińata Theory, which takes a deeper dive into his Mexican-American identity, Hip-Hop and deconstructing concepts of masculinity. Since April is National Poetry Month, it seems like a good time to revisit our first conversation. And because so much has changed since then-- traveling, book publication and more-- we brought him back to give us a life update and a poem.

Hey kids, this week Mister Sister (Jordan Barbour and Dr. Caitlin Shure) follow Alice down the rabbit hole to discuss last week's episode of RuPaul's Drag Race, and we answer the question: Is Kandy making a comeback? (Verdict: Please God No). Then we head over to Spotify where we're checking out the new podcast, Renegades: Born in the USA with Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen. We're checking out their discussion on fathers and masculinity. And then deep diving into our own thoughts on masculinity and gender performance. After that, Jordan has a chat with White America in our new segment, "This Is Not a Thing". And, as always, we end with our ConsQUEERacies: Caitlin tries to remember life before Utica...or does she? And Jordan has some theories as to why his toothbrush has bluetooth. The truth is here. The truth is queer. And she just adopted kittens. And don't forget to check out our featured artist, Valerie Orth, and her new song (and album) Rabbit Hole.

About Matt Stephenson Insecurity Podcast host Matt Stephenson (@packmatt73) leads the Broadcast Media team at BlackBerry, which puts me in front of crowds, cameras, and microphones all over the world. I am the regular host of the InSecurity podcast and video series at events around the globe. I have spent the last 10 years in the world of Data Protection and Cybersecurity. Since 2016, I have been with Cylance (now BlackBerry) extolling the virtues of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and how, when applied to network security, can wrong-foot the bad guys. Prior to the COVID shutdown, I was on the road over 100 days a year doing live malware demonstrations for audiences from San Diego to DC to London to Abu Dhabi to Singapore to Sydney. One of the funniest things I've ever been a part of was blowing up a live instance of NotPetya 6 hours after the news broke... in Washington DC... directly across the street from FBI HQ... as soon as we activated it a parade of police cars with sirens blaring roared past the building we were in. I'm pretty they weren't there for us, but you never know... Every week on the InSecurity Podcast, I get to interview interesting people doing interesting things all over the world of cybersecurity and the extended world of hacking. Sometimes, that means hacking elections or the coffee supply chain... other times that means social manipulation or the sovereign wealth fund of a national economy. InSecurity is about talking with the people who build, manage or wreck the systems that we have put in place to make the world go round... Can’t get enough of Insecurity? Mathematics as a subject is distinctive in its symbolic abstraction and its potential for logical and computational rigor. But mathematicians tend to impute other qualities to our subject that set it apart, such as impartiality, universality, and elegance. Far from incidental, these ideas prime mathematicians and the public to see in mathematics the answers—for example, an impartial arbiter, or a meritocratic equalizer—to many urgent societal questions. Anna Weltman's new book, Supermath: The Power of Numbers for Good and Evil (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2020), surveys a number of ways this conception of mathematics has informed scientific undertakings and public policies, not to mention our everyday behaviors, and makes a powerful case for reevaluating its assumptions. The book's five chapters contain stories of mathematical exploits from ancient to ongoing and across the spectrum from pure to applied. Many may be familiar, for example active research and journalism into the use and misuse of predictive algorithms or G. H. Hardy's enumeration of the elements of mathematical beauty. Others, including continuing work to interpret Incan documents that survived European colonial erasure and the epidemiological insights obtained from massively multiplayer online gaming, will be new even to many mathematical readers. What they share is the essential but often ignored interplay between theory and culture that makes mathematics a thoroughly human activity. Weltman's book can be read as a call for scholars, educators, and communicators of mathematics to grapple with the power our training and credentialing in mathematics grants us, and to understand that its most basic promise of solving problems is not automatic but one that we must realize. Anna Weltman is a math teacher and writer who earned her PhD in mathematics education from the University of California at Berkeley. She is also the author of This Is Not a Math Book and This Is Not Another Math Book. Hi there, “Clap back,” “come back,” or “And, then I said…” are usually exchanges with other humans we feel proud to speak about. Society has long-defined a person who has a voice is someone with a deep voice, speaks loudly, or speaks over others to have a voice indeed. Every part of my work shows you that THIS IS NOT the only way to have a voice; from leadership consulting, developing online courses to creating personal brands, I champion your voice - YOUR WAY. Last week at Own Your Voice Summit, I had a courageous attendee speak up in one of the live sessions about not being able to speak up at the moment, the immediate “clap back” that is oh-so-valued. My response to her will be my Words of Wisdom to add to your #WOWkit this week. EQ: INTERNAL VOICE What is my typical response? Does my voice adopt fight, flight, or freeze? Thinking back to when I wish I spoke up, what is it that I still want to say? IQ: EXTERNAL VOICE How do I best express my voice? Written? Text message? Voice memo? Verbal? Have the conversation. Don’t shy away from using your voice AFTER the exchange. With so much emphasis on how we respond immediately, we automatically rob ourselves of the chance to use our voice after the fact. The truth is many of us need to process before speaking up; that’s what makes you a conscious leader in your life, don’t focus on the immediate response; focus on what it is that you want to express. Be mindful of the energy exchange. Express your voice in the best way for the situation at hand. If you are setting a boundary with someone you see almost every day, a softer approach is probably better. A handwritten card, sticky note, or even a gentle voice memo after the fact often lands much better with the recipient. Before you use the excuse that “the moment has passed,” or “I’ll say something next time,” I want you to consider this: Once the moment has passed, the emotions have settled, when you bring it back up, it allows everyone to know the importance of the topic at hand. It will not cause a confrontation; it will give you space to connect and gain respect. With gratitude,SaharP.S. If you missed this year’s Own Your Voice Summit, no need to worry, you can still secure a pass today! Robin Trower [00:34] "Fine Day" For Earth Below Chrysalis CHR 1073 1975 Vintage resting guitar face whackachacka. Jackson Browne [03:39] "Take It Easy" For Everyman Asylum Records SD 5067 1973 Yup, co-written by Browne and Glenn Frey. Featuring some fine pedal steel by Sneaky Pete Kleinow. Lush [07:19] "Astronaut" For Love 4AD bad 2001 1991 A lushly atmospheric track by guitarist Emma Anderson. I was lucky enough to catch Lush at CBGBs once upon a time with Nation of Ulysses and Velvet Crush. Ray Price [09:57] "For the Good Times" For the Good Times Columbia C 30106 1970 This Kris Kristofferson-penned tune would be come Ray's first number 1 single in since 1959. The album also features a rendition of Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It through the Night". Roxy Music [15:12] "Editions of You" For Your Pleasure Warner Bros. Records BS 2696 1973 Oh yeah, some mighty interplay between Mackay's sax, Eno's EMS VCS 3 (https://youtu.be/O6fFL-1fclI?t=3), and Manzanera's guitar. Tom Waits [19:02] "Barber Shop" Foreign Affairs Asylum Records 7E-1117 1977 Some snappy banter from the barber there. Not sure I'd want him lowering my ears. Pallbearer [22:52] "Foundations" Foundations of Burden Profound Lore Records pfl-140-1 2014 Some excellent doom metal from these Arkansas gentlemen. Recorded in Portland by Billy Anderson at Portland's Type Foundry Studio. Foreigner [32:47] "Urgent" 4 Atlantic SD 16999 1981 This track from the multi-platinum album 4 made it to number... 4 on the Hot 100. And it happens to feature Thomas Dolby on synths, and Junior Walker on sax. Eric Clapton [37:14] "Willie and the Hand Jive" 461 Ocean Boulevard RSO SO 4801 1974 A rehabilitated Clapton takes a decent pass at Johnny Otis. Yes [40:45] "Long Distance Runaround" Fragile Atlantic SD 7211 1971 If it were me, I'd pot down the bass wankery and crank up the keyboard wankery, except maybe in that pre-chorus 4/4 bit. Peter Frampton [44:18] "All I Want to Be (Is by Your Side)" Frampton Comes Alive! A&M Records SP-3703 1976 I was going to go with "Jumpin' Jack Flash", but it's nearly 8 goddam minutes long, so instead we've got this one. It's only 3 and a half minutes. I paid $3.50 for his record at a thrift store in Petaluma. I would argue I paid $1.50 too much. The Kingston Trio [49:04] "New York Girls" From the Hungry I Capitol Records T1107 1959 Surprise, the album sleeve was for Frank and Tommy, but instead it was a Kingston Trio record. I dated a few New York Girls in my time. I don't recall any of them being able to dance the polka. Tom Waits [51:53] "Telephone Call from Istanbul" Frank's Wild Years Island Records 90572-1 1987 Un operachi romantico in two acts. This classic track features Marc Ribot on banjo. Frankie Crocker & the Heart and Soul Orchestra [55:05] "Funkin' Up Hollywood" Frankie Crocker & the Heart and Soul Orchestra Casablanca NBLP 7050 1977 Something that found its way into my collection. Ray Parker plays guitar in this ensemble. Illuminati Hotties [58:37] "Freequent Letdown" Free I.H.: This Is Not the One You've Been Waiting for Self-Released 2020 We saw Illuminati Hotties open for Los Campesinos! not too long ago and I've been brainwashed ever since. A great studio technician and tenderpunk master, Sarah Tudzin had to buy out her contract from the troubled Tiny Engines label and instead of releasing the album she had been working on, popped out this contractual obligation record. The album has great range (https://youtu.be/ZKtuGSjnrFk), and I am especially enamored of this relatable track. Music behind the DJ: "Make the World Go Away" by Lawrence Welk and Orchestra

We seem to avoid thinking about mortality, or talking about loss, but it is an unavoidable fact that we all face the loss of a loved one, and will each confront that truth in different ways. If grief is unavoidable, what is the best way to make peace with it? Part One of Living With Dying features Dakshana Bascaramurty in conversation with CBC's Idill Mussa, and Anita Lahey in conversation with Ellen Chang-Richardson. This is Not the End of Me by Dakshana Bascaramurty is the moving, inspiring story of a young husband and father who, when diagnosed with terminal cancer at the age of thirty-three, sets out to build a legacy for his infant son. Layton Reid was a globe-trotting, risk-taking, sunshine-addicted bachelor--then came a melanoma diagnosis. Cancer startled him out of his arrested development--he returned home to Halifax to work as a wedding photographer--and remission launched him into a new, passionate life as a husband and father-to-be. When the melanoma returned, now at Stage IV, Layton and his family put all their stock into a punishing alternative therapy, hoping for a cure. This Is Not the End of Me recounts Layton's three-year journey as he tried desperately to stay alive for his young son, Finn, and then found purpose in preparing Finn for a world without him. Equal parts humorous and heartbreaking, The Last Goldfish by Anita Lahey is a poignant memoir of youth, friendship, and the impermanence of life. Anita and Louisa, instant friends in grade nine, navigate the wilds of 1980s suburban adolescence against the backdrop of dramatic world events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall. They make carpe diem their manifesto and hatch ambitious plans. But when Louisa's life takes a shocking turn, into hospital wards, medical tests, and treatments, a new possibility confronts them, one that alters, with devastating finality, the prospect of the future for them both.

Pete Jones special - talking about life with Public Imagine Limited, Department S & Brian Brain with David Eastaugh Pete Jones played bass in different bands since the punk rock era of the 1970s, but is known for being a member of Public Image Ltd., during 1982–1983. He played bass guitar on PiL's highest charting UK single "This Is Not a Love Song" as well as recording Commercial Zone whilst with the band in New York. During punk days, in the late 1970s, he played in The Hots with Martin Atkins, formerly Blonde (not Blondie). In 2008, he teamed up with Fred Suard to form The Creepy Dolls, and released an EP entitled Grande Finale, and released various tracks with Clem Chambers under the name Pete & Charlie. He has recently returned to the live stage with a guest appearance for Mod Revivalists, Back To Zero and has joined post punk band Department S as permanent bass player and producer. Jones currently lives in Harpenden where he writes and records.

Just like everyone else in the world, the Day 1 Radio cast is having to adjust to the COVID-19 shutdowns, so we're trying something new. Shoutout to our producer Herb for getting us connected to bring you another episode, virtually. Of course we're talking about the elephant in the room but we're also talking about some of the other (less stressful) things going on in the world too. 1:00 - Branden isn't convinced that everyone is practicing social distancing like they are supposed to. Maurice isn't convinced that everyone is taking the entire situation serious. Here, they talk about some of the things they've seen when they've gone out for groceries or a breath of fresh air. 5:00 - How long will be in this? We aren't acting like we know, but we do encourage that you do your best to inform yourself by listening to the right sources. 7:40 - In the midst of the chaos, Jay Electronica dropped his highly-anticipated debut album "A Written Testimony." But many people, including Branden, feel it's an uninspired showing from Jay Elect and a contrived effort from Jay-Z. 15:10 - Here Branden and Reese talk about their current binges and books. Among them are McMillions, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, This Is Not a T-shirt, and Black Lightning. 21:10 - Maurice didn't go to the D-Nice online party, but Branden thought it was dope, very needed and he def thinks D-Nice will be booking a lot of dates, once this whole thing is over with. 26:30 - Will the quarantine change how people live after it's over? Maurice is curious to see if people will be in a rush to get back to "normal" things like waking up and fighting traffic to go to work everyday. Branden also wonders how it will impact large and small business' bottom line. 35:00 - Artists are being hit hard with festivals being cancelled and some are thinking about not dropping any new music at all. Do you feel them on that? [00:30] ‘We’re All Italy’ (16 minutes) For weeks now, government officials and the media have said that America and Britain are just days away from looking like Italy. Some experts forecast that America and Britain could face hundreds of thousands of deaths—on the low end! Is it any wonder many people are panic buying? [17:00] Thou Shalt Panic (30 minutes) People are shocked more by the government’s reaction to the coronavirus than they are by the virus itself. The experts say that an overreaction is a good sign! Any dissent from the experts’ opinion is blotted out or flagged by social media. Everyone must comply with the experts’ narrative. [46:00] This Is Not a Joke! (10 minutes) The weather yesterday was beautiful. Not surprisingly, many people ventured outside. They were scolded by governors and mayors alike for not taking the crisis serious enough. The mayor of London is now considering the possibility of arresting “clusters” and deploying the Army.
