“Don't tie your identity to things that can be pulled away from you.” Today's episode shares a true story of resilience, grit, and grace. If you've ever struggled with confidence, instability, or fear, you'll relate to this conversation. Stephen Scoggins is an award-winning, successful entrepreneur, however, it wasn't always that way. Growing up, life was really difficult for Stephen. When he was just 22, he found himself homeless and on the verge of suicide. He was angry, stuck and completely empty inside. During that season, a mentor gave Stephen a second chance opportunity he didn't feel he deserved.  From there Stephen launched a multi-million dollar construction company and has gone on to launch 5 other successful businesses ranging from real estate to thought leadership with top line revenue over $100 million. He uses the pain of his past and the lessons he's learned along the way to help people discover who they are, why they are here and what to do about it. Stephen is dedicated to the relentless pursuit of giving others the same gift of freedom he received by offering a practical and empowering education to those looking for a second chance to level up, catapult forward and make their dreams a reality. In this episode, Stephen shares the path he took from rock bottom to building stability, confidence, and success. He is a guide, not a guru, and I know you'll find so much value in what he shares.   Here's what you will learn: How Stephen became homeless, it's impact on his life and how he turned tragedy into triumph (1:54) How rockbottom can lead you to fight for a better life and build your first business (10:43) Why fear can drive us to terrible decisions and how to make better choices (19:31) How humility helps to build resilience and confidence (25:41) Why fear feeds procrastination and how to overcome that (30:58) The importance of personal gatekeepers in our lives (38:25) Screenshot your favorite part and post to your IG story and tag me @amberlylagomotivation and @stephen_scoggins so we can see and repost to our stories! And then in turn, what kind of reasons do you give them to be loyal to you?" - Stephen Colon   "Even if you're having difficulty with your priorities, you've got to communicate that to folks who have a vested interest in the success in your life." - Stephen Colon   "If you can consistently try to get better today than what you were yesterday, it would reveal how important or what progress you made towards your consistent mid-term goals and how that plays a role in truly what's important." - Stephen Colon   "Getting consistency throughout the process gives you clarity on when you need to stop." - Stephen Colon   "The value of stopping is a severely underestimated principle in my opinion. On today’s episode I am taking a risk by talking about a potentially triggering topic: death. Last year I attended a Buddhist event on death that really shifted many paradigms about how I viewed death and the importance of dealing with grief and loss. I had no idea at that time what 2020 was going to bring. This reframing allowed me to move through 2020 thriving instead of surviving so I had energy to invest in this podcast. That is my lens and intention with this episode. I want to shed light on this topic in the hopes it will help you as well. I brought Stephen Hudecki on today’s show as he was one of the speakers at that event, and has a lot of personal experience working in palliative care settings.  My ask is that you have an open mind and listen to the episode! Stephen has a very unique background in sound therapy which has informed the way he works and his approach. We also talk about some practical things you can engage with that may help you if this topic makes you anxious. This episode is a bit of a different direction - I am open to all feedback and would really enjoy hearing from you. You can find both our contact information in the show notes. During this episode we discuss: How Stephen felt during 2020 with his knowledge and experience around death Where Stephen’s love for music came from  Music therapy vs sound as healing  Sound therapy as medicine (& where it came from) The power in music and instruments - specifically drumming  Why society doesn’t address and talk about death (This is important!!) Stephen shares his experience working in a hospital during the pandemic  How you can reduce your fear around death - Stephen gives some practical tips  The power of talking about ‘the elephant in the room’ Stephen’s Bio: Stephen graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a Masters in Spiritual Care and Counselling; successfully completed the St. Joe’s Supervised Pastoral Education Residency; became certified as a Spiritual Care Practitioner through the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care, and is a registered member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. Following two years with St. Leonard’s Addiction Mental Health Crisis Centre in Brantford, Stephen worked as a full time Spiritual Care Psychotherapist at West Park Healthcare Centre in Toronto. Stephen brings a love of music as an agent of healing, interconnectedness and beauty as well as a long standing Zen Buddhist practice to this role. He is passionate about caring for patients, and caring for those who care for patients through providing healthcare staff with innovative, inclusive and clinically validated support. It is an honour to serve the sick. Editor, Stephen Mirrione ACE The Midnight Sky editor, Stephen Mirrione ACE has spent the past twenty-five years building an impressive body of work.  Unlike many editors who begin their journey into post production as assistants, Stephen made a name for himself right away as an editor in the indie film world.  His work with directors Doug Liman (Getting in, Swingers, Go) and Jill Sprecher (Clockwatchers, Thirteen Conversations About One Thing) quickly established Stephen as a creative force to be reckoned with in the editing room. Soon after Stephen would meet a director who would have a significant impact on Mr. Mirrione's career...Steven Soderbergh.  Their time together would begin with the film Traffic.  This would not only be the first of Stephen's three Oscar nominations, but also his first Oscar win.  Following Traffic, Stephen would take on the duties of editing Soderbergh's "Ocean's" films, starring an actor that would eventually become a prominent director in his own right, George Clooney. When Clooney began looking for an editor for his first project, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Soderbergh recommended Mirrione.  The creative partnership between Clooney and Mirrione currently spans over eighteen years and encompasses seven feature films, culminating with their latest effort, The Midnight Sky.  Not one to rest on his laurels too long, over that same time period Mirrione would also edit five of Alejandro G. Iñárritu's films (21 Grams, Babel, Biutiful, Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and The Revenant). However, he never lets his age barricade him from finding new ways to grow, and this is the wisdom he wishes to impart to those who are currently journeying through midlife.   Stephen joins me to share how he found growth beyond midlife. He describes how his business and family have adjusted to the pandemic and the challenges they encountered over the last year. He explains the importance of respecting time with your family, especially now that the norm is to work from home. He discusses the role religion has played in his individual growth and some of the moments in his life where he felt God touch his life. Stephen also shares why integrity matters and why it has to be always “on,” regardless of situation.         "If you're going to be great in life, every day you have to do something hard." - Stephen Jermyn       Today on Mastering Midlife:   Moments in life where integrity matters. On today’s special Australian double header show, we’ve actually got two interviews from live streams we held earlier this year.  First up is James Schramko, who is a great friend and has been on the show quite a few times already. He talks about the basic foundational strategies that he uses in his business (which is also similar to our own business because we’ve modeled what he does), how he has been able to maintain great customer relationships over the years with the same membership site, and his thoughts and ideas on keys to building trust and what to do if you are just starting out. Our second guest is Stephen Esketzis who we have modeled as well, with our affiliate blog posts. He was ClickFunnels #1 affiliate for a long time and he’s another one who we had on the show previously. Stephen has some newer updates, tools, and lots of good content marketing affiliate strategies and we also talk about developing some tools for affiliate marketing as well. We also dive into his cool method of using a quiz to create the perfect funnel for your business, and by taking a few extra steps that most marketers do not, has propelled his business by far. Affiliate marketing is a topic that is one of the three foundational things we like to chat about, and it’s also a topic that people are looking for with examples on how to do it in their own business. James is building a platform, with a podcast, email lists, and a community, while Steven takes more of the blogging, customer journey, and SEO route. You can combine them and take pieces of each model as we did, which is what our business is about now. After you have listened, be sure to check out our shows with Larry Ludwig and Matt McWilliams for more tips on how to set your affiliate marketing goals right.  “When someone already has a database and they already know what products sell, just sticking them in front of their customers on the most highly visited page on their website is a really good idea.” - James Schramko “Now more and more people are switching to writing better quality reviews and content because it’s getting more competitive and you need to improve your content game if you want to become a better affiliate. The more value you provide, you get repaid for it in the long run.” - Stephen Esketzis Some Topics We Discussed Include: Tips if you are just starting out James’ least favorite business and why he’s working his way through it currently How to go above and beyond to stand out beyond the rest of affiliates Why James had a Skype button on his site in the early days How Stephen set up his super cool quiz funnel to get dialed in leads  An idea for an affiliate site that is a lot of work but will lead to great rewards How Stephen basically gets tons of software for free Stephen’s early days of working with ClickFunnels and earning the title of top affiliate And much, much more! Where is the crest of the wave for entrepreneurs in all this waiting? Stephen Somers, co-founder of Marketplace Superheroes, chimes in for this interview with James and Dean to discuss how e-commerce and online service businesses are set for a quantum leap. Stephen co-founded an online education and services company that helps people learn to sell their own products globally via Amazon, completely from scratch. With over $12 million in products sold on Amazon, Stephen and his business partner Robert also grew an 8-figure coaching and training business aimed at helping people learn to start up a successful side hustle, even with minimal cash and experience.   “When this started, I heard Russell (Brunson) say, ‘Now’s the time you have to be there for your audience.’ So I doubled down on streaming, and let people ask me ANYTHING about business, money, side hustles … anything you want.” – Stephen Somers   Outline of This Episode   - [05:40] The coming wave of small, online service businesses and an e-commerce boom   - [16:05] Stephen’s competitive angle and mindset for creating a successful Amazon business   - [23:12] The gold mine waiting on the entrepreneur who knows how to leverage online traffic     - [25:45] Amazon’s incredible, credibility-boosting inventory decisions in the age of COVID-19   - [27:09] The gift that keeps giving – the quarantine’s positioning opportunity for entrepreneurs   Amazing and unusual places to plant seeds on Amazon Don’t get greedy, and don’t get fooled by the latest trends where millions of people are trying to get in to compete for precious dollars. Stephen counsels clients to start their e-commerce side hustles with extensive research for products that have potential and an existing record of searchability. The path to success doesn’t lie where you think it does – learn the secrets of “farming” a living from multiple income streams.   Online traffic’s potency to explode your side hustle growth How Stephen’s new side hustle of golf themed t-shirts led to a GOLDEN discovery – the price of online traffic is falling, and it remains the most powerful tool for automating orders and cashing in on the shuttered, blindsided terrestrial market. With fewer competitors than EVER, e-commerce side hustles and small, internet-based service companies for local communities are poised for a boom like no other.   The biggest mistake you can make during the COVID-19 quarantine James, Dean and Stephen rap about the unique ripeness of the time for capturing your audience’s ATTENTION, which was almost impossible to do pre-COVID. With over 20 years of Internet experience, Stephan Aarstol is an Internet industry veteran who has founded multiple ventures. In 2014 with a staff of just 5 people and revenues of $5M, Tower Paddle Boards (back by Mark Cuban on Shark Tank) was named the #1 fastest growing private company in San Diego by the San Diego Business Journal. A year later Tower was #239 on the INC 500 list of America's fastest growing companies.  In 2015, to challenge long held delusions about unhealthy start-up work culture, Stephan moved his whole company to a 5-hour workday and would later write a book titled “The Five Hour Workday” about the experience, which would spread the idea to tens of millions of people worldwide, and get press in over 20 countries. Stephen Shapiro is the author of the new book “Invisible Solutions: 25 Lenses that Reframe and Help Solve Difficult Business Problems”. For over 20 years, Stephen has presented his provocative strategies on innovation to audiences in 50 countries. During his 15 year tenure with the consulting firm, Accenture, he led a 20,000 person innovation practice. He is the author of six books, and the creator of “Personality Poker: The Playing Card Tool for Driving High-Performance Teamwork and Innovation”, a card game that has been used around the world to create high performing innovation teams. In 2015, he was inducted into the speaker Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was a regular judge and mentor on the TLC innovation reality television show, Girl Starter. Stephen started his career as an industrial engineer building computers and found the work to be routine.  He realized early on that he was not a ‘cubicle guy’. He joined one of the world’s largest consulting firms, Accenture, by leveraging his engineering background to help companies develop more efficient processes and new products.  When he discovered that companies were laying off thousands of people in the name of progress, he wanted no part of that. He took a leave of absence to reflect and returned to Accenture six months later with some fresh ideas to help companies grow.  After 15 years with the firm, he decided to build his own brand, which includes authoring 6 books, speaking worldwide, online learning and innovation consulting.  In this episode we discuss: How Stephen became disillusioned when he realized that his work as a consultant to help companies’ optimize their business processes enabled them to reduce their workforces.  He likes to help his clients stay relevant by helping them create products, services, and  business models that are relevant to companies, consumers, and their clients.  Stephen shares how most of his business comes through credible referrals and clients who have worked with him.  How he set the intention to write his first book and had it become real almost 5 years to the day after he set it. Stephen shares how he prefers to divot instead of pivot and by doing so, deepens the way he delivers his content.  The value he places on meeting people where they are. Are you wondering if a strategic partnership could benefit your business endeavors? Are there just some skills that you lack that a partner could take on? If you don’t possess all the necessary skills—or even finances required—to be a business owner, consider partnering with someone who does. My guest today, Stephen Kopshaw, gives us insight into 3 different areas of franchising—and doing it with partners. 12 years ago Stephen was a physical trainer working at a Fitness Together location. He had ideas on how to implement business practices differently that he felt would benefit the franchise. He shared his ideas and goals with his client and friend, Lisa Paladino Petersen, hoping to open his own location someday. One day she said, “Why don’t we do it together?” and their partnership was formed. Less then a year later they were operating their location. Now, Stephen and Lisa—along with 4 other partners—own multiple franchise locations, work as consultants, and are operate on the flip side as franchisors.  Outline of This Episode [0:35] I introduce my guest, Stephen Kopshaw, CEO of FIT 36. [2:10] How Stephen got his start in franchising [6:15] How it all began with friendships [11:20] Play to your strengths—let someone else handle your weaknesses [14:55] Taking over failing stores = “Turnaround Opportunities” [17:10] What do you look for in an opportunity [20:55] What do you look for in a good location [22:30] The evolution of their partnership [25:40] Next steps: Buying out a franchise [29:00] Challenges to overcome  [32:35] Commitment to transparency and change [34:55] Changes in store for FIT 36 [40:00] Things commonly seen in an underperforming franchise What can a strategic partnership do for you? The strictest definition of a strategic partnership is a “relationship between two commercial enterprises usually formalized by one or more business contracts”. So we are going to loosely interpret the term in this instance. The goal is to partner with someone who has experience in areas that you do not. Play to your strengths—and let someone else handle your weaknesses. Steve, like myself, is a strategic thinker and succeeds at anything having to do with execution, finding opportunities, and all of the “big picture” decisions. He considers day-to-day management and customer relationships his weaknesses, but they are strengths for some of his partners. The key is to find people who balance the relationship and complement each other.  What to look for in a turnaround opportunity Something Stephen and his partners specialize in is taking failing stores—which they prefer to call turnaround opportunities—and helping them find success. They can absolve someone’s liability and help them move on to their next step. Another benefit is that they aren’t on the line for a lot of the typical costs involved with building out a location. So what do they look for? The first step is to make sure you have access to financials, profit and loss statements, and their advertising/sales process. If you can adequately gauge where the business is struggling and how to address it, it’s a good indicator of future success. A trick they love to use is spending 4-6 hours in the immediate area and playing “secret shoppers” as they check out the competition. The #1 thing that would deter them from buying? A bad location. Want to know more? Keep listening! A team with many hats: Franchisors, franchisees, and business consultants Steve and his team originally started as a mastermind group, each taking turns to educate each other on something new. Eventually, they all started relinquishing work they weren’t skilled at to each other. Over time, their relationship evolved into a mutual partnership, with each complementing the other. They knew they could do something bigger with the A-list team they had cultivated.  They were approached to buyout a Fitness Together location to complement their current one. So they flipped it and built a thriving business while also experiencing growth in their core studio. They tested the waters and dove into the world of Elements Massage—which became another success. Their most recent endeavor was the purchase of the Fit 36 franchise. Keep listening to hear where this new opportunity is taking them.  Implementing clear communication and transparency I asked Steve what surprised him the most when transitioning from franchisee to franchisor. Surprisingly, communication styles have been the most difficult roadblock to navigate. Everyone hears and absorbs information differently. What seems like a simple company-wide email relaying information can become complicated as everyone involved interprets the message differently. Steve and his team are committed to establishing transparency and change as they’ve taken over Fit 36. They want everyone to be on the same page and stay informed. They implement this by sending out a monthly newsletter, running a facebook group, and monthly roundtable calls with the leadership team. If you want to hear specifics of how they’re turning the franchise around, listen to the full episode now. This episode is full of strategies any franchise should implement with only a few things touched on in the notes—check out the full episode now for all the details! As I continue on my journey of leading the best life possible, a common theme seems to keep coming up time and again. EVOLUTION. More specifically, it seems to be that it’s the Evolutionary Mismatch which is at the root cause of all our physical health, mental health and environmental issues we suffer with today. Through technology, power, money and the desire to control everything (including life and death itself), we’ve stumbled so far off the beaten track that we have alien-like new world views that ignore the prior 2 million years of human evolution.  As a theme that has and will continue to feature as part of AdapNation’s messaging, we explore this idea of Evolutionary Mismatch with Dr. Stephen Hussey in this episode.   Stephen is an American Chiropractor, a Functional Medicine Practitioner, Health Coach and Author. He’s got an interesting story of suffering with many illnesses and auto immune conditions including Type 1 Diabetes as a young child, and how through his realisation to return to a lifestyle that nature intended that his health drastically changed for the better. What changed Stephen’s health was the eureka moment of realising he had a huge Evolutionary Mismatch in his current environment, lifestyle and nutrition...   If you want to develop your framework for understanding this key concept, want to know more about the value of proper movement as it relates to health, and would like some key takeaways on how to improve your wellbeing, then this episode is worth checking out. Oh, and if you like touching third rail ethically charged topics too… then you need to get involved!   Here’s what we discuss: 1️⃣ Stephen's myriad of health struggles from 2 years old, and how lifestyle and traditional medicine failed him 2️⃣ How Stephen addressed most of his illness and allergies through changing his nutrition and lifestyle choices 3️⃣ His Four Penny Dropping Realisations - Natural Selection, Homo Genus Lineage, Slowness of Evolution & Inability to Adapt to Rapid Environmental Changes 4️⃣ Equal human capability? - With the pressures of natural selection, is it right to expect equal opportunity and capability for every human? 5️⃣ Our obsession with avoiding death at all costs - Are we attempting to assume a divine role in nature? Is it realistic to have so many net-consumers? 6️⃣ Are we Devolving as a species due to our nutrition and lifestyle choices? 7️⃣ The Evolutionary Movement Disconnect - Joint nutrition deficiencies, Joint toxic-induced degeneration, reduced mobility, improper and insufficient motion 8️⃣ Practical tips on how to better align with our innate needs for proper human movement and align with our evolutionary biological preference 9️⃣ The tainted rep & real value of Chiropractic Services - exploring why the practice has been previously dismissed, and what the real role and value of Chiropractics is. Much more than adjustments...

Hart is here today. In honor of Black History Month, Stephen returns as a former guest and friend of mine and friend of the show. He is the Chief Creative Officer of Isles Media, LLC. His creations include Brand You Academy and Trailblazers FM. Stephen is also a dynamic speaker on the topics of personal branding, entrepreneurship, and podcasting. His mission is to guide 10,000 people through creating an amazing personal brand over the next 5 years. How Stephen handles his busy life Have you ever launched out into something completely brand new? Stephen was brand new at podcasting when he appeared back in Episode 56 in August 2016. He shared with us the tools he used back then that he still relies on today, like Evernote. The need for organization is greater than ever before. Stephen and his wife both work full-time jobs and have two young kids. Being busy, making time for family, and prioritizing mental health are everyday challenges for Stephen. He shares with us why he took an extended break from the podcast last summer and how God’s design for him includes his listening more closely to his body.  TWEET: Sometimes you have to listen to your body and take a break when you need to. @stephenahart #chasingdreams Your nugget of wisdom What have you shared with the world? Stephen’s Brand You Academy was born from the feedback he received as people reached out to him for more each week. He then developed and created the Trailblazers brand, a platform that’s engaging and has built an amazing community. He then saw the need of personal branding help for leaders and entrepreneurs. When he spoke at Podcast Movement on, “Build, Market, and Grow Your Amazing Brand While Still Working a Full-Time Job,” he saw tremendous interest. Stephen realized that his nugget of wisdom was an idea that he needed to give life to and share with the world--without waiting on perfection. TWEET: You can’t wait on perfection until you execute your dreams. @stephenahart #chasingdreams The important thing to remember If you’re launching an online course, then you probably wouldn’t jump in before the course is complete. Stephen had to do just that, when he knew he couldn’t wait. He realized his level of understanding of branding and marketing was somewhere between 8-10, and the average person who takes the course is around 0-2. His revelation was that he didn’t have to take people all the way to 10, but needed to get them to 4-5. Sometimes, the most important thing is to jump in and see the progression. TWEET: Sometimes, the most important thing is to jump in first and then see the progression. @stephenahart #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Take time to write out what you hope to accomplish 30 years from now, and reverse-engineer your way to it.” For a bonus behind-the-scenes interview with Stephen, visit www.aimeej21.com/patreon and become a donor. Today's interview is with Stephen Garten. He is doing something really unique with his company Charity Charge. With his company, they produce a card that steers 1 percent of all purchases to nonprofits of the customer's choice. The Charity Charge MasterCard issued by Commerce Bank is not limited to a single organization or cause — as with “affinity” cards — and there is no donation-processing fee, so recipient groups get the entire cash-back bonus. Consumers choose target charities when they sign up for the card and can change them at any time.According to Garten, he just wants to make doing good part of the routine of everyday living and i'll say he's doing a great job at it. Currently, in the United States of America, 200 million credit cardholders are better at accruing rewards than spending them. It has been reported that people are sitting on a whopping $16 billion worth of unused rewards points. Apparently, what motivates us to get cards in the first place isn’t the extras on offer. It’s the simple convenience of having plastic when we need it. Hart - Providing Actionable Steps to Pursuing Your #Dreams No reason to push ahead except for the belief that there is more Everybody has the struggle to stay motivated. Discouragement comes along in a variety of forms. Physical stamina waxes and wanes. Staying the course becomes difficult. Stephen A. Hart says that one of the primary things that keep him moving forward is the belief that there is more ahead for him than what he’s experiencing now. One of his core beliefs is that the gifts and abilities he’s been given are always in a state of growth - and growth means that what’s happening now is not all there is. On this episode, you’re going to be inspired by what Stephen shares about his pursuit of something more. Why you have to cut out the fluff if you’re going to reach your dream Stephen A. Hart does so many things - a full-time job, a handful of side hustles, a very popular and growing podcast - and he still has the time and presence of mind to build quality relationships with his family. He says that the only way he’s able to get it all done is by cutting out the fluff that he’s tempted to allow into his life. That means he hardly watches T.V. anymore. Instead, he redeems those hours to the service of his dreams and goals. And he makes sure that he stays organized to enable himself to identify the fluff things that will rob him of valuable time he could be leveraging toward greater things. On this episode you’re going to hear Stephen describe some of his productivity and time management systems in detail, so make sure you listen. TWEET: Why you have to cut out the fluff if you’re going to reach your #dream Success is defined by the progressive realization of the goals I’ve set We’ve all got our individual ideas of what it means to be successful. For some, it’s about revenue. For others, it’s about connections and the attainment of different roles or achievements within their particular niche or industry. Stephen A. Hart says that he defines success by the progressive realization of the goals he’s set - which means that setting goals is vital to his success. On this episode of Chasing Dreams you’re going to hear how Stephen sets goals for himself and more importantly how he systematically plans and works toward their completion. What he shares is the backbone of his success and you are certain to find something helpful that you can utilize to move you toward success in your own goals. My goal is to tell about the everyday professionals who are doing exceptional work When Stephen A. Hart began thinking about what he wanted to bring to the world through podcasting he realized that most of what he was hearing in the media were the negative stories that highlight the tensions that exist between people. But he knew that there was more happening in the world than that. His desire quickly grew for presenting stories of people who are doing exceptional work in the world and benefiting others by that work. Stephen Smith is an agrarian, adventure, and lifestyle photographer who has successfully combined his love of ranches, farms, motorcycles, and travel into a full-time career in professional photography. Thanks to his artistic eye, hard work, persistence, and willingness to take risks, Stephen has successfully created a niche for himself in the crowded arena of professional photography. • He is obviously a naturally talented artist, but it seems that a great deal of Stephen's success can be traced back to the fact that he is committed to putting himself in unique—often difficult, uncomfortable, or scary—situations that allow him to capture one-of-a-kind experiences and perspectives. Among other things, he has worked on a 90,000-acre Colorado cattle ranch, taken a five-month solo motorcycle trip through South America, and put in time at several California and Colorado vineyards, all while constantly shooting photos and refining his craft. • Stephen's solid understanding of agriculture and years of adventure are evident in his work. His images are as authentic as they are artistic, and he knows how to capture the true spirit of a person, place, animal, or experience in a fresh style that creates a genuine connection with the audience. I came across Stephen’s agricultural photography several years ago and was immediately drawn in. (And keep in mind, I can be a bit jaded when it comes to ranch photos—I look at them all day as part of my job.) I have been a fan of his work ever since. • I was super-excited to finally meet Stephen and learn more about his work and personal story. We had a fun (and funny) conversation and covered a wide range of interesting topics. We dug into his connection to agriculture and talked in depth about how ranches and farms play an important role in land conservation. We talked about motorcycles and some of his adventures. How to Start a Major Festival from SCRATCH Have you ever wanted to start your own conference, festival, or event? You know, like TomCon, or the Morkes Festival? Me too.  That's why I brought Stephen Ananicz onto In The Trenches today. Stephen is the cofounder of the The Key West Film Festival, and has a background in acting and film production (if you check out his name on IMDB you’ll see him credited in movies like Pirates of the Caribean and Salt, among other blockbusters). And while his background in film is interesting in and of itself, I really wanted Stephen on In The Trenches today to talk about how he created the Key West Film Festival from scratch. Creating any sort of festival or conference is a massive undertaking and I really wanted to dig into the details on how exactly Stephen went from idea to finished product on a project with such scale. As a quick background on the festival:  The Key West Film Festival was founded in 2012 as a nonprofit independent film festival supporting the South Florida art and film community. It’s now going into it’s 3rd year come this November and is continuing to grow in size and popularity. So seriously, if you've ever been interested in creating your own major headline event, this is the interview for you. What Stephen Ananicz and I talk about: How Stephen’s background in film allowed him an inside look at the film industry and gave him a ton of experience with film festivals How he first created the idea for a film festival in Key West, Florida in 2010 How Stephen conducted his initial market research (and why this was paramount to making the event work...pun intended?) What it was like to see the idea snowball to the point of no return (launch or fail) The precise steps for creating a successful festival from scratch (yes, I had Stephen number and organize them for me) How to build the right team for whatever your project is (and why it was essential Stephen got the local community on board) How Stephen tweaked and pivoted the event so it become more productive and successful And much much more   Stephen Ananicz on how to start, finish, and ship a massive project: Stay focused on one thing. [click to tweet] Connect with Stephen and the Key West Film Festival: kwfilmfest.com Key West Film Festival's Facebook Key West Film Festival's Twitter   If you enjoyed today's podcast, leave a review on iTunes here. Anyone who has worked in the field of addiction recovery will know that recovery is a long road, and often we as therapists and counselors will need to find ways to engage our client’s sense of thought and endurance. The work of Virginia Satir has been extremely influential in addiction recovery, and this week’s guest, Stephen Buckbee, has been using Satir’s methods successfully for years now. Stephen joins Duane Osterlind on the Addicted Mind this week to explain the transformative power of embracing change. Therapy, he says, is a process that the counselor and therapist can enter into with their client. Rather than striving to “fix” a recovering addict, we have the power to generate a place of safety and self-discovery. Therapy is at its most powerful when the slow change process is fully engaged. The Satir Method is very good at embracing change and paving the way to recovery. Join us this week as we celebrate recovery and empowerment through self-discovery! Also in this episode. * How Stephen employs the principles of Virginia Satir’s methods with clients who struggle with addictions. * A discussion of the foreign elements that begin the process of change. * This model meets the client where they are at so that they can begin the decision-making process. * The most difficult obstacle for recovery is forgiveness for past transgressions. * Moving on from the past into the future of recovery. * Using the Satir method to help addicts re-focus their thoughts away from the pleasure of addiction. * The huge importance of a support system. * The burdens of busy-ness.
