Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.04.18.537358v1?rss=1 Authors: Tasaki, S., Kim, N., Truty, T., Zhang, A., Buchman, A. S., Lamar, M., Bennett, D. A. Abstract: Hand drawing involves multiple neural systems for planning and precise control of sequential movements, making it a valuable cognitive test for older adults. However, conventional visual assessment of drawings may not capture intricate nuances that could help track cognitive states. To address this issue, we utilized a deep-learning model, PentaMind, to examine cognition-related features from hand-drawn images of intersecting pentagons. PentaMind, trained on 13,777 images from 3,111 participants in three aging cohorts, explained 23.3% of the variance in global cognitive scores, a comprehensive hour-long cognitive battery. The model's performance, which was 1.92 times more accurate than conventional visual assessment, significantly improved the detection of cognitive decline. The improvement in accuracy was due to capturing additional drawing features that we found to be associated with motor impairments and cerebrovascular pathologies. By systematically modifying the input images, we discovered several important drawing attributes for cognition, including line waviness. Our results demonstrate that hand-drawn images can provide rich cognitive information, enabling rapid assessment of cognitive decline and suggesting potential clinical implications in dementia. What's the difference between learning to draw by hand and using software or digital architecture tools? What's the best software tool? Someone asked the question why architecture companies prefer their employees to draw in Autocad as they felt that it's easier to draw in Archicad and Revit. This led to many conversations and led me to believe that we lost the ability to design in 2D as we had when we hand-drawn. We lost the ability to design as much as could. ©️Talk Architecture 2022, Author: Naziaty Mohd Yaacob. Phillip Bailey takes map-making to a new level. He creates hand-drawn works of art that incorporate traditional elements as well as unexpected, unusual designs. He's had a passion for both geography and art throughout his life, so making hand-drawn maps is a perfect fit for him. Every piece he makes is created by hand with no tracing or computer-generated imaging involved. He even creates personalized, custom maps that reflect the geography and experiences that are meaningful to the person who places the order. In some cases, he even creates “merged maps” that combine two or more countries, states, provinces or cities. On this episode, host Angela de Burger chats with Phillip about how he uses storytelling and personalization to create unique maps, his approach when beginning a new project, his summer theme of “collaborative creations”, and whether collaborating boosts his own creativity.Say hi to Phillip: Website Instagram Facebook----Creative Pulse Podcast socials: Instagram: creativepulsepodcast Twitter @CreativePulseTWMusic credit: https://www.purple-planet.com

Hand Drawn Maps is an indie rock duo from the South Bay in Los Angeles, CA composed of lifelong friends Stewart Crichton and Blake Baldwin. The two create a unique sound that draws from a wide array of genres from classic 1960s psychedelia and surf rock, through current indie rock, pop, and more. Often drawing on their personal histories for inspiration, the lyrics bounce from themes of idyllic love to drug use and past forays with altered states of consciousness. Welcome Leadheads. Today, we are back again with another banger for your ears. Yea, folks - Episode 26 brings us to one of my personally most anticipated interviews with animator Joey Capps. Joey's journey is power-packed with gracing his talents on a multitude of animation projects that most of us have heard of, whether you're an animator or not, including Teen Titans Go, Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Scooby Doo and finally his current hot gig, the all new return-to-form Looney Tunes cartoons on HBO Max, serving the role of animation supervisor. Joey talks about making his way in a very competitive industry, surrounding himself with as many talented folks as possible, navigating the tough waters of hand-drawn animation at a time when a lot of folks thought it was dead and how he landed the gig with Looney Tunes. Joey was about a nice a guy as you could hope for in a guest. But, don't take my word for it. Grab yourself a nice cold one, sit back, relax and enjoy our chat with Joey. The Pencil Pushers Podcast is a celebration of the hand-drawn arts. I'll be interviewing friends and idols in illustration, animation, comic-art, and more. - Mike Rosado https://www.instagram.com/ekimodasor/ Produced and edited by Trujillo Media

In this episode, I chat with illustrator and cartoonist, Leon Edler. Leon's bright and cleverly simple hand drawn illustrations are a delight to look at. It's no wonder he's worked with a host of impressive clients such as The New Yorker, The New York Times, CNN, Warby Parker, The Guardian, Vanity Fair, and more. Leon is really funny, insightful and generous with his story. We discuss how a creative career is a process, and you just have to take it step by step. How we were both pretty miserable at the beginning of our careers because we based our self-worth on getting commissions, and how we both wish we had relaxed and enjoyed the process more. Leon also gives some excellent advice on what to do if you're feeling like your career is taking a while to get started and you're not sure what to do in the mean time. Leon is also a co-founder of Room Fifty, the amazing art print site that curates artwork from today's top illustrators. Some of my favorite artists have work on there, so if you're in the market for beautiful artwork to hang in your home or gift to a friend, definitely check out roomfifty.com.

G'day! In this episode, I speak to Debbie Steer who is an Animation Producer based in Sydney - currently revitalising the hand-drawn industry in Australia. We became friends 13 years ago as struggling filmmakers in Manchester, England. Debbie shares her story of making the decision to move to Australia and then finding herself in Australia three weeks later! My favourite part is when she shares her mindset towards decision making. Thanks Debs! (Just FYI - I almost titled this episode, 'Debbie Does Sydney.' Then again, you probably would've preferred it!)

There's something special about vinyl records. The feel, smell, look and sound all seem richer and more authentic than digital music. In 2016, stores sold 13 million records, the highest volume of vinyl sales in the past three decades. We are in the midst of a vinyl revival. Vinyl record pressing companies can barely keep up with the demand. Most pressing companies are relying on restored equipment from the 70s and 80s, which is slow and error prone. However, Hand Drawn Records is modernizing this process. They are using the first pieces of modern technology designed for record pressing. Their presses are controlled by computers, reducing error rate and speeding up the pressing process 3x. Today, on Small Business War Stories, we are joined by John Snodgrass from Hand Drawn Records to discuss how they are revolutionizing the vinyl pressing industry.
In episode 173 of The Modern Vinyl Podcast, we invite Dustin Blocker (Hand Drawn Pressing) and James Hashmi (Viryl Technologies) to the program. I was introduced to both companies through a SXSW panel called "The Modernization of Vinyl Record Pressing" and was eager to hear more about their advancements. A discussion of Omar Nasim's book Dr Omar Nasim (lecturer in history at the University of Kent) discusses his book with Dr Stephen Johnston (Assistant Keeper, Museum of the History of Science), Professor Martin Kemp (History of Art, University of Oxford) and Professor Chris Lintott (Astrophysics, University of Oxford). The book sheds entirely new light on the ways in which the production and reception of handdrawn images of the nebulae in the nineteenth century contributed to astronomical observation. Omar W. Nasim investigates hundreds of unpublished observing books and paper records from six nineteenth-century observers of the nebulae: Sir John Herschel; William Parsons, the third Earl of Rosse; William Lassell; Ebenezer Porter Mason; Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel; and George Phillips Bond. Nasim focuses on the ways in which these observers created and employed their drawings in data-driven procedures, from their choices of artistic materials and techniques to their practices and scientific observation. He examines the ways in which the act of drawing complemented the acts of seeing and knowing, as well as the ways that making pictures was connected to the production of scientific knowledge.
