Host J.D. Reager talks to his old friend and a wildly talented multi-instrumentalist musician, Scott Danbom, about his early days on the Oklahoma competitive piano circuit, moving to Denton, TX and joining Centro-matic, recording with acclaimed Memphis producer Jeff Powell, getting amicably kicked out of Slobberbone, collaborating with Patterson Hood and The Drive-By Truckers, and founding his solo project, Static Diary. J.D. also plays two songs from the self-titled Static Diary album, "Phrase From Business" and "Carefully Poisoned." --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Brad is more than a fantastic storyteller. He's a multi-talented burlesque performer, and visual artist. If only to put the rest of us to shame, Brad is also an author. In 2020 he serialised his novel Maxine and the Planets Unknown as a 20-episode podcast. It's worth a listen. Think of the children. You can learn more about Brad by following him on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. You can also take storytelling classes with Brad at Kevin Allison's Story Studio.I could go on for a looooooong time about alt-country in general and The Old 97s in particular. Like Brad, the alt-country movement hit me at a musically and personal important time. Bands that he mentioned (like Uncle Tupelo and Southern Culture on the Skids) and dozens he didn't, like Whiskeytown, Lucero, Slobberbone, Fiftymen and others were very very important to me in the late 90s. The idea of "starting a country band because punk rock was too hard to sing" has lost a lot of its charm as the purveyors of the sound have either moved on or transformed into (still loveable) dad rock, but I still occasionally dig out some twang and roll (especially for Kate who loves the sound of a two-step high hat). Check out this playlist of some of my favourite alt-country songs that remind me of Timebomb (including Timebomb) if you want to slide down the rabbit hole with me! Some other time, I'm sure I'll make a playlist of just songs with Timebomb in the title.Make sure you follow The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net.And if you have a story about the song that saved your life be sure to send it to me at volumeknobpod@gmail.com.
Hoo boy! We talk about the Beatles' Americana influenced studio album and we revel in the beauty of In My Life and talk about the small joys of Ringo singing country. We also talk about how much we love Norweigen Wood and how many smart people think it is a top 5 Beatles song. We also discuss dressing up as John Lennon in high school, how and since we are now older, we ponder our mortality by discussing how much CBD water to put in our go bag and what songs we want at our funerals. This is a legally binding document) We pull a switcharoo and Aaron comes in hot with a list of the best breakup songs that we all know and love. Then we do what all music podcasts do and break down the members of Slobberbone and talk a lot about Wilson Phillips. A lot. Obviously we do not get off track in this episode and we stick to the topic at hand! If you love us or hate us and want to get a hold of us, you can either talk to Russ on Bumble or call the beck line at 802-2770-2325 (Beck) Email us at beckdiditbetter@gmail.com and follow us @beckdiditbetter on Twitter and Instagram. I would love it if someone followed us who is not just promoting their own podcast.

Some old, some new. We resurrect an all-time great rant by Father Joe Mama, and a lot of music from newly-reissued Cds by Rev. Joe Newman (The Rudy Schwartz Project). Also, plenty of new music, from Amit Lissack, Slobberbone, The Large, Jonathan Coulton and The Psycho Skeletons. Lemur does his usual, and near the end is a tour-de-force of editing by Rev. Susie the Floozy in which she turns a shout-out to everyone on [secret SubG newsgroup not shown here] while turning it into a charming story of the denizens of Kern's Holler.
