We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2015 conversation with Swamp Dogg.  ABOUT SWAMP DOGGR&B cult favorite Jerry “Swamp Dogg” Williams is best known as the co-writer, with Gary U.S. Bonds, of the cross-genre classic, “She's All I Got,” which became a Top 10 R&B single for Freddie North and a #2 country hit for Johnny Paycheck in 1971. Tracy Byrd recorded it in 1996, hitting #4 on Billboard's Country rankings and introducing the song to a new generation of fans. Williams' career began in 1954 when, at the age of 12, he made his first record, “HTD Blues.” He found success in the 1960s, recording the Top 40 R&B hit “Baby You're My Everything” under the name Little Jerry Williams, and writing songs for other artists, including Gene Pitney's Top 20 Pop single, “She's a Heartbreaker.” He became Atlantic Records' first African American staff producer in 1968, but left the following year to pursue independent projects in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. By the 1970s he was an in-demand producer and songwriter, penning Top 40 R&B hits for Doris Duke, Arthur Conley, and Dee Dee Warwick. Around the same time, he reinvented himself as Swamp Dogg, releasing a series of eccentric deep soul albums whose gonzo lyrics were marked by frank sexuality, biting satire, radical politics, and provocative social observations. His debut LP, Total Destruction to Your Mind, was eventually certified Gold, while subsequent releases, including Gag a Maggott, I'm Not Selling Out – I'm Buying In, An Awful Christmas and a Lousy New Year, and The White Man Made Me Do It have earned considerable accolades among underground music lovers and earned Swamp what one journalist described as “a cultural niche somewhere between Rudy Ray Moore and Frank Zappa.” In recent years, his vast catalog has been sampled by Kid Rock, Talib Kweli, DMX, and others.

Dave Swift, Bass Man with the Jools Holland Big Band In 1991 Dave Swift heard that Jools Holland, ex-Squeeze keyboardist and TV presenter, was searching for a bassist who played both double bass and bass guitar. With the renowned bassist Pino Palladino then holding the “bass chair” in Holland's band, this was a bold move on the young bassist's part. The advantage from Swift's position was that he also played double bass and was already skilled in sight-reading. Swift auditioned, was hired on the spot, and has been Holland's bassist ever since.   Thanks to his talent and growing popularity, Swift is often invited at shows and camps. Recently, Swift was invited to appear at the annual Warwick Bass Camp in Germany in 2016 as a VIP guest, along with numerous popular bass luminaries from all over the world. The 2016 Warwick Bass Camp was held in Markeneukirchen, Germany, and had a roster of outstanding bassists. Attending professors included Alphonso Johnson, Felix Pastorius, Anthony Wellington and Steve Bailey. Swift was also a guest lecturer at the March 2016 Bass Guitar Show at Earls Court Olympia that filled the room to capacity.   Dave Swift is still an in-demand session musician outside of Holland's band and has also played double bass for American soul singer Gary U.S. Bonds, Ben E. Phil and Jake are rank the 1983 fictional band biopic Eddie and the Cruisers, the 1999 Latin pop hit “Mambo No. 5 (A Little Bit of…)” by Lou Bega, and  being possessed on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Jake and Phil are always on the grind trying to make money while they sleep, trying to monetize, etc. Just the most craven shit you can imagine. Pod-Bucks are how Phil and Jake get paid for making this podcast. A Pod-Buck is kind of like a No-Prize but without the envelope. Actors that we discuss include Tom Berenger, Ellen Barkin, Joe Pantoliano, James Franco, Michael Paré, Rick Springfield, Gary Oldman, Dan Aykroyd and Bob Saget. Many musical acts come up during the episode, such as Bruce Springsteen, Dion and the Belmonts, My Chemical Romance, Damaso Perez Prado, Aerosmith, Ice Cube, Spinderella, Bell Biv Devoe and Chris Gaines.  We talk about how The Doors were used as an inspiration for Eddie and the Cruisers, but we fail to draw the connection that there were also rumors about Jim Morrison faking his death. Songs discussed include  “On the Dark Side” by John Cafferty (which is from the movie), “Quarter to Three” by Gary U.S. Bonds (maybe Phil's favorite song of the 20th century), “Project Chick” by Cash Money Millionaires, “Kokomo” by the Beach Boys, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cindi Lauper and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dione Warwick. Phil mentions a song from the movie called “Special Touch” but the actual name of the song is “Down On My Knees” (also by John Cafferty). Phil's right when he says it sounds like “Hurts So Good” by John Mellencamp. Other movies discussed include That Thing You Do!, West Is West, Streets of Fire, Jersey Boys, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Howard the Duck, Caddyshack, The Matrix, The Truman Show, Drumline, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Exorcist, All of Me, Ghost, Ghost Rider, Ghostbusters, Evil Dead 2, Repossessed, R.I.P.D., The Frighteners and of course Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives! Streets of Rage is the arcade game Phil mentioned that uses the common trope of a power up of a whole roast chicken that makes the player regain his health. The Palace of Depression was a real place in Vineland, New Jersey. Jake claims that Eddie and the Cruisers used the actual site as a shooting location, though the internet implies that it was razed in 1969 so maybe the one from the movie was a recreation. Jake calls meals_by_cug a Jersey guy but it looks like he's from Staten Island. We refer to our episode featuring Dave Hause, in which we go over Dave's USA Today piece about Taylor Swift and master tapes. Here's the scene from The Simpsons where Bart tries to buy a novelty license plate. Brian WIlson had a nervous breakdown when he heard the Beatles' Revolver. Sleep paralysis is the worst. Jake cites Scottish folklore that attributes it to a witch sitting on your chest. We couldn't trace the story to Scotland, but we did discover the night hag, which isn't too far off the mark. We don't actually get into the movie, but Silverado is an 80s neo-traditional Western by Lawrence Kasdan with a stacked cast that Phil's never seen, and is the one movie that Phil will never be invited over to Jake's house to watch. Back in 1961 - In The Past's favourite rock'n'roll year after 1966 - Gary U.S. Bonds released an amazing track called "Not Me", which due to the squares, never hit the Top 40 like it should have (1:17).  We celebrate this American road trip of a song while we revel in its "in the red" levels and the Virginia rebels behind the "Norfolk Sound." Later on, The Orlons managed to make the song a hit in 1963 and we talk about Rosetta Hightower's low growls , Stephen Caldwell's froggy vowels, and add some crucial new Simon Cowells (i.e. critical terms) to the world of Rock and Roll  Studies (55:42) Finally, we end up in Mexico to check out Los Apson's re-written, re-titled refrito version, "Por Ti" (1:25:14).
