Welcome to Astronomy Daily, your friendly and engaging source for all things space and Astronomy. I'm your host, Anna, here to guide you through the latest cosmic headlines. Whether you're a casual stargazer or an astrophysics enthusiast, we've got news that will spark your curiosity and keep you informed about the universe.- **Planetary Influences on the Sun's Magnetic Cycles**: Researchers at the Helmholtz Zentrum Dresden, Rossendorf, and the University of Latvia have unveiled a groundbreaking physical model supporting the planetary hypothesis. This model proposes that vortex-shaped currents on the sun, named Rossby waves, act as intermediaries between the gravitational influences of planets like Venus, Earth, and Jupiter, and the sun's magnetic activities. By revealing how Rossby waves mediate the planet's tidal forces, researchers can now predict and understand even longer-term solar cycles, offering new insights into the sun's behavior and its interactions with the rest of our solar system.- **Exploring Neptune's Moon Triton**: Steve Olson and Jeffrey Landis have proposed the Triton Hopper mission to explore Neptune's largest moon, Triton. The innovative mission aims to use a cryogenic pump to extract propellant directly from Triton's icy surface, enabling the hopper to cover significant distances by hopping across the moon. Loaded with scientific instruments, this mission could unlock a wealth of data about Triton's geology and potential for biological activity.- **Redefining What Makes a Planet**: The definition of what constitutes a planet is back up for debate. Researchers like Jean-Luc Margot of UCLA have proposed new criteria focusing on dynamical dominance and mass. This refined classification aims to provide clarity and consistency, aiding both the astronomical community and the public's understanding of what exactly constitutes a planet. The IAU is expected to discuss these proposals further at their next general assembly in Rome in 2027.- **Space Sustainability Collaboration**: Airbus Defense and Space and Astroscale Limited have partnered to advance in-orbit servicing and space debris removal. Their collaboration focuses on space debris removal, in-orbit servicing, precise navigation and docking technologies, in-orbit space assembly and manufacturing, and satellite refueling and life extension. This partnership aims to enhance the longevity and efficiency of space assets, contributing significantly to building a circular economy in space. For more Astronomy Daily, including our continually updating newsfeed, visit our website at astronomydaily.io. In the first half, numerologist Glynis McCants (ph. 877-686-2373) joined George to discuss the World Energy of the year 2024, an 8 year, as well as how world events are unfolding and why it's not too late to seize opportunities to create personal wealth or find love. McCants, an expert in how patterns of events unfold exactly according to the energy signature of specific numbers, explained the origins of the discipline she follows, noting that it originated with Pythagoras, is more than 2,500 years old, and is based on "the belief... that everything in this universe has vibration," and that through numerology you can understand those vibrations and how they interact with people and events. For instance, she said, in the case of love and relationships, numerology can help a person determine "who is compatible to you and who is a challenge."She also explained how energy can be changed with numerology by changing numbers. All numbers can be reduced to 1 through 9, and are determined by adding together each series of numbers until you get to the root number. So, for instance, 640 would be 6+4+0 which equals 10. Then 10 would be 1+0. The number 640, then, would be a "1" number. So, McCants explained, if you want to be left alone, having your address as a "1" number is fine. If you don't want to be alone, though, you can change it, she said. You can do that, she claimed, by adding a number to gain the vibration you are seeking, and then writing or inscribing that number somewhere out of sight inside your doorframe. According to McCants, this will change the energy of your home without having to change your physical address. Be careful what you change it to, though. The numbers expert said while a "5" house will always be interesting, there are dangers of addiction associated with that number, while a "6" home is good for family and stability. McCants also touched on the numbers associated with world leaders and politicians, including Joe Biden, Donald Trump, Robert Kennedy Jr., and Vladimir Putin, and what that predicted for them in the coming year before taking calls and giving readings based on the numbers associated with birthdates. For more, check out Glynis' online workshop on Saturday, April 6th on using affirmations and numerology for healing.-------------Journalist and researcher Alex Ansary has covered diverse subjects including the supernatural influence over human affairs, geopolitics, and World War 3, the Sun's effect on human consciousness, spiritual transformations, and other ideas regarding what we are really doing here on Earth. In the second half, he explained the impact of solar cycle 25 and how increased sunspots and geomagnetic storms correlate with more wars, conflicts, invasions, protests, and all-around civil unrest (view related material). Ansary began by noting how Galileo was one of the first to study solar cycles in the Western world but that the Chinese have been keeping records of sunspot counts for much longer. According to Ansary, the Russian researcher Alexander Chizhevsky used these records in the early 20th century to develop his theories of "heliobiology" or the study of the Sun's effect on biology, and was one of the first (at least in modern times), "to start looking at the Sun and the wars that were taking place when the Sun was active at that time." --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/georgenoory/message

Solar irradiance provides heat and light for life. It waxes and wanes with the cycle of solar activity, which currently cannot be predicted accurately. Solar storms can have a great impact on technology. In February 2022, a solar storm destroyed 40 Starlink satellites from Elon Musk's company SpaceX. Researchers in Davos are collaborating on several space experiments to find out more about solar physics. In 1904 the Prussian businessman Carl Dorno travelled to Davos with his daughter, who was suffering from tuberculosis. In those days the Alpine town was a health resort for tuberculosis patients. As an amateur meteorologist, he began to build scientific instruments with the aim of investigating how the climate influenced our health. This was the birth of the Physical Meteorological Observatory Davos (PMOD).In the early 1970s, the observatory also became home to an international calibration centre for radiation measurements, the World Radiation Center (WRC). The radiometers developed there are used by weather stations all over the world, not only on the ground but also in space. For instance, two instruments are on board the Solar Orbiter, a Sun-observing satellite developed by the European Space Agency (ESA).To make more accurate predictions about climate change, researchers in Davos need to better understand solar cycles, which last about 11 years. Why is there a lot of activity in some cycles and very little in others? Understanding these mechanisms also helps predict solar flares, which can interfere with technologies such as electricity grids, navigation and communications. In this episode of our Science in Davos series, PMOD/WRC director Louise Harra gives us an insight into the research with the Solar Orbiter instruments. This podcast is an audio version of the SWI swissinfo.ch video series with the same title. GB2RS News Sunday the 17th of September 2023 The news headlines: RSGB Strategic Priorities RSGB 2023 Convention YOTA month The RSGB Board has chosen four strategic priorities for the Society to focus on until the 2024 AGM. These are the growth of amateur radio; membership of the RSGB; spectrum and licensing; and ensuring the continued financial stability of the Society. These priorities will set the framework for the RSGB's activities over the coming months. Both HQ staff and volunteers across the range of RSGB teams will be involved in planning how best to implement these four priorities. Look out for further details in the coming weeks. The RSGB 2023 Convention has a great speaker programme and there are also some fantastic forums to take part in. The RSGB HF and VHF Forums will take place on Sunday, and on Saturday in conjunction with ICQPodcast, the RSGB is offering Convention attendees the chance to discuss two important topics. The first will challenge you to consider and take responsibility for the issues within amateur radio today – for example, is amateur radio just about what you like? Should someone else fix the issues you see? The second forum will focus on QRM and how both newcomers and experienced radio amateurs can sometimes feel frustrated or discouraged by on-air activities. In both forums you can discuss personal experiences, share ideas, and help to promote positive interactions with fellow radio amateurs. You will leave with a notepad full of ideas. The only way to participate in these forums is to be at the Convention, so do book your package or tickets now! Full information about the updated programme, speakers, the drop-in buildathon and the social scene are on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/convention December is Youngsters on the Air, or YOTA, month and is an exciting opportunity for you, your club, school, or social group to host an amateur radio station with the aim of getting youngsters active on the amateur bands. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 14th of September 2023 While our terrestrial weather this week was variable, it seems our space weather was equally unsettled! We warned last week that it wouldn't take much to cause the Kp index to rise and on Tuesday a coronal mass ejection, or CME, hit the Earth sending the Kp index to 5.67. The Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field tipped sharply south for a long duration causing visible aurora to be seen across the north of the UK and as far south as Cornwall. This really hit HF quite hard and good signals were scarce. Unsettled radio conditions continued into Wednesday bringing the Maximum Usable Frequency, or MUF, over a 3,000km path down below 18MHz for most of the day. The Kp index was still around 3 or 4 on Thursday, but MUFs were recovering and were at around 28MHz over 3,000km by lunchtime. Next week NOAA predicts that the Solar Flux Index will start the week around 165 and then decline as the week progresses, perhaps ending at around 145 to 150. Geomagnetic conditions are forecast to be quiet, at least until the 23rd when the Kp could rise to four. But at this point in the solar cycle the risk of a solar flare, and subsequent CME, remains high every day, so watch solarham.net for up-to-date information. And finally, a new paper by NASA's Lisa Upton and David Hathaway indicates that sunspot maximum is now forecast to be in the Autumn of 2024. They predict a maximum sunspot number of 135, plus or minus 10, which is slightly larger than Cycle 24's maximum of 116.4, but well below the average of 179 for Solar Cycles 1 to 23. And now the VHF and up propagation news Tropo conditions are still present over southern areas today, the 17th. However, by early next week, low pressure will be a dominant force and the coming week looks very unsettled with rain and quite strong winds at times. This means that any Tropo, either across the southern North Sea or down across Biscay, will not last beyond this weekend, ending today the 17th. The unsettled low-pressure-driven weather will mean that rain scatter is a distinct possibility on some of the more active days. The other propagation modes are the usual fall-backs of meteor scatter using random meteors and aurora, which may not be too far-fetched in view of the geomagnetic activity and visible auroras experienced recently. The September Epsilon Perseids meteor shower has already peaked earlier in the month, but a few lingering meteors may give some truly random radio reflections. Last week there were indications that this normally quiet period after the August Perseids and the forthcoming October Draconids can still provide some interest for persistent meteor scatter enthusiasts. During this coming equinox week, the Moon will reach its lowest declination of the month on the 22nd and 23rd. This point also coincides with the Moon being in Sagittarius, so that sky noise will be very high. This will make moon bounce operations particularly difficult towards the end of the week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Rome Precision Solar Photometric Telescope: precision solar full-disk photometry during solar cycles 23-25 by Ilaria Ermolli et al. on Tuesday 22 November The Rome Precision Solar Photometric Telescope (Rome/PSPT) is a ground-based telescope engaged in precision solar photometry. It has a 27-year database of full-disk images of the photosphere and chromosphere beginning in 1996 and continuing to 2022. The solar images have been obtained daily, weather permitting, with approximately 2 arcsec/pixel scale in Ca II K line at 393.3 nm, G-band at 430.6 nm, and continuum in the blue and red parts of the spectrum at 409.4 nm and 607.2 nm, respectively. Regular observations were also performed at the green continuum at 535.7 nm for a period of about 18 months. Since the first-light, Rome/PSPT operations have been directed at understanding the source of short-and long-term solar irradiance changes, spanning from one minute to several months, and from one year to a few solar cycles, respectively. However, Rome/PSPT data have also served to study a variety of other topics, including the photometric properties of solar disk features and of the supergranulation manifested by the chromospheric network. Moreover, they have been unique in allowing to connect series of historical and modern full-disk solar observations, especially the Ca II K line data. Here, we provide an overview of the Rome/PSPT telescope and of the solar monitoring carried out with it from its first light to the present, across solar cycles 23-25. We also briefly describe the main results achieved with Rome/PSPT data, and give an overview of new results being derived with the whole time series of observations covering the period 1996-2022. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.10538v1

Effects of Emerging Bipolar Magnetic Regions in Mean-field Dynamo Model of Solar Cycles 23 and 24 by V. V. Pipin et al. on Monday 17 October We model the physical parameters of Solar Cycles 23 and 24 using a nonlinear dynamical mean-field dynamo model that includes the formation and evolution of bipolar magnetic regions (BMR). The Parker-type dynamo model consists of a complete MHD system in the mean-field formulation: the 3D magnetic induction equation, and 2D momentum and energy equations in the anelastic approximation. The initialization of BMR is modeled in the framework of Parker's magnetic buoyancy instability. It defines the depths of BMR injections, which are typically located at the edge of the global dynamo waves. The distribution with longitude and latitude and the size of the initial BMR perturbations are taken from the NOAA database of active regions. The tilt of the perturbations is modeled by random function, and the mean tilt is modeled as a near-surface helicity (alpha-effect) term. The data-driven models are compared with the models calculated for random longitudinal and latitudinal distributions of the initial perturbation. The modeling results are compared with various observed characteristics of the solar cycles, including the magnetic butterfly diagram, the polar magnetic and basal magnetic fluxes, and the probability distributions of the BMR flux on the surface. Our results show that BMR can play a substantial role in the dynamo processes, and affect the strength of the solar cycle. However, the data-driven model shows that the BMR effect alone cannot explain the weak Cycle 24. This weak cycle and the prolonged preceding minimum of magnetic activity were probably caused by a decrease of the turbulent helicity in the bulk of the convection zone during the decaying phase of Cycle 23. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.08764v1
Toroidal flux loss due to flux emergence explains why solar cycles rise differently but decay in a similar way by Akash Biswas et al. on Sunday 16 October A striking feature of the solar cycle is that at the beginning, sunspots appear around mid-latitudes, and over time the latitudes of emergences migrate towards the equator. The maximum level of activity (e.g., sunspot number) varies from cycle to cycle. For strong cycles, the activity begins early and at higher latitudes with wider sunspot distributions than for weak cycles. The activity and the width of sunspot belts increase rapidly and begin to decline when the belts are still at high latitudes. Surprisingly, it has been reported that in the late stages of the cycle the level of activity (sunspot number) as well as the widths and centers of the butterfly wings all have the same statistical properties independent of how strong the cycle was during its rise and maximum phases. We have modeled these features using a Babcock--Leighton type dynamo model and show that the flux loss through magnetic buoyancy is an essential nonlinearity in the solar dynamo. Our study shows that the nonlinearity is effective if the flux emergence becomes efficient at the mean-field strength of the order of $10^4$~G in the lower part of the convection zone. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.07061v1

The Sun is both a natural laboratory for plasma physics and the focus of the field of study known as Heliophysics. Heliophysics involves the physics of how the Sun actually works. Dr. Michael Kirk, P.I. of the NASA Heliophysics Education Activation Team, defines the state of matter known as plasma, and explains how studying the Sun helps us better understand satellites, radio signals, GPS signals, and many other technologies that affect our life every day. Solar eclipses, including the upcoming annular solar eclipse (October 2023) and total solar eclipse (April 2024), are also discussed. Eleven-year, 22-year and ~90-year solar cycles discovered in nitrate concentrations in a Dome Fuji Antarctica ice core by Yuko Motizuki et al. on Sunday 25 September Ice cores are known to yield information about astronomical phenomena as well as information about past climate. We report time series analyses of annually resolved nitrate variations in an ice core, drilled at the Dome Fuji station in East Antarctica, corresponding to the period from CE 1610 to 1904. Our analyses revealed clear evidence of ~11, ~22, and ~90 year periodicities, comparable to the respective periodicities of the well-known Schwabe, Hale, and Gleissberg solar cycles. Our results show for the first time that nitrate concentrations in an ice core can be used as a proxy for past solar activity on decadal to multidecadal time scales. Furthermore, 11-year and 22-year periodicities were detected in nitrate variations even during the Maunder Minimum (1645-1715), when sunspots were almost absent. This discovery may support cyclic behavior of the solar dynamo during the grand solar minimum. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.11330v1

After a conversation this morning with our tenant farmer, Cody - Rob reflects on how the "home" is becoming a functional and operational homestead. Gratitude plays a role in understanding and appreciating the dream that is starting to materialize after more than a decade of executing a plan to exit and build with family. This led Rob to further reflect and understand what his calling might actually be...something that has become a bit more clear with setting goals, working with community and creating content...all things that YOU can do to document your journey and refine your personal vision. The consistency in the process and the documentation leads to these moments of clarity - and often times these little moments of clarity are exactly what we need to get through the daily grind. Rob also discusses Solar Cycle 25 Forecasts and Updates - along with observations of prior Solar Cycles and how they correspond with larger scale world events. For example, the stock market and housing crash of 2008 occurred at the end of Solar Cycle 23 leading into Solar Cycle 24 and the events regarding SARS-CoV-2 occurred at the end of Solar Cycle 24 leading into Solar Cycle 25. The time that comes up at the end of the modern calendar year means so many things to so many people. We have the holidays, the new year and so much energy is put into those mainstream holidays. We make the resolutions for the new year, and often let them fail and give up- and we don't actually focus the amount of energy that this time of year deserves to manifest powerful and lasting change into our life. In this episode, Heath discusses the history of how this time of year has been distorted and what some cultures observe that matches several natural processes. The divisions of science and spirituality have divided for so long, that we have forgotten that the concepts often compliment each other and- when brought together and understood- could yield amazing manifestations into our lives. Foundations of Amateur Radio If you've been around radio amateurs for a little while you're likely to have heard about the Solar Cycle and that it affects radio propagation for HF or High Frequency, also known as shortwave communications. The frequencies in the range of around 3 to 30 MHz, or 100m to 10m wavelength. One of the main ways it's used is for is for long distance or global communication and one of the most common ways that's done is using the ionosphere around the globe to refract a radio signal. In September 2020, the Solar Cycle 25 Prediction Panel, announced that Solar Cycle 25 had commenced in December 2019 and radio amateurs around the globe rejoiced. The first question for me was, why Solar Cycle 25? You might think of the Sun as a stable light in the sky. As it happens, the bright light hides all manner of ferocious activity. One of the measures of this activity is the number of dots observed on the surface of our Star. These dots are called sunspots. As Solar activity increases, the number of sunspots increases. The activity is cyclical, it increases and decreases over time. Each increase and decrease combined is known as a Solar Cycle. On average a cycle lasts about 10.7 years. Simple maths gives you that Solar Cycles started somewhere around 1750. That seems a little strange. Our Sun is 4.6 billion years old. There are paintings on the rocks at Ubirr in the Northern Territory of Australia that are 40 thousand years old. The pyramids in Egypt are 45 hundred years old. The Solar Cycle has been going for a lot longer than the 7 million years there have been humans on the planet, let alone dinosaurs who experienced the Solar Cycle 66 million years ago. Using fossil records we've determined that the Solar Cycle has been stable for at least the last 700 million years. Chinese astronomers recorded Solar activity around 800 BC and Chinese and Korean astronomers frequently observed sunspots but no known drawings exist of these observations. The first person to draw sunspots was John of Worcester on the 8th of December 1128. Five days later, half a world away in Korea on the 13th of December 1128, the astronomers in Songdo reported a red vapour that "soared and filled the sky", describing the aurora borealis in the night sky that resulted from those very same sunspots. In the early 1600's there was plenty of activity around the recording of sunspots. Thomas Harriot appears to have predated Galileo Galilei by more than a year with notes and drawings dated the 8th of December 1610. There's plenty of other names during this period, Father and son David and Johannes Fabricius and Christoph Scheiner to name three, but I'm moving on. The Solar Cycle, was first described by Christian Horrebow who more than a century later in 1775 wrote: "it appears that after the course of a certain number of years, the appearance of the Sun repeats itself with respect to the number and size of the spots". Recognition of the Solar Cycle was awarded to Samuel Heinrich Schwabe who noticed the regular variation in the number of sunspots and published his findings in a short article entitled "Solar Observations during 1843" in which he suggested that the cycle was 10 years. Stay with me, we're getting close to Solar Cycle number One. In 1848 Rudolf Wolf devised a way to quantify sunspot activity. His method, named the Wolf number, is still in use today, though we call it the relative or international sunspot number. In 1852 he published his findings on all the available data on sunspot activity going back to 1610 and calculated the average Solar Cycle duration as 11.11 years. He didn't have enough observations to reliably identify Solar Cycles before 1755, so the 1755-1766 Solar Cycle is what we now consider Solar Cycle number One lasting 11.3 years with a maximum of 144.1 sunspots in June of 1761. Until 2009 it was thought that there had been 28 Solar Cycles between 1699 and 2008 with an average duration of 11.04 years, but it appears that the 15 year Solar Cycle between 1784 and 1799 was actually two cycles, making the average length only 10.7 years. I should also point out that there have been Solar Cycles as short as 8 years and as long as 14 years. With the announcement of Solar Cycle 25 comes improved propagation for anyone who cares to get on air and make noise. The current predictions vary depending on the method used, ranging from a very weak to a moderate Solar Cycle 25. There are predictions for the Solar maximum, the time with the most sunspot activity, to occur between 2023 and 2026 with a sunspot range between 95 and 130. By comparison during the previous Solar Cycle, in 2011 the first peak hit 99 and the second peak in 2014 hit 101. I have purposely stayed away from electromagnetic fields, geomagnetic impacts and the actual methods for HF propagation, I'll look at those another time. I can tell you that we've gone a little beyond counting dots on the Sun to determine activity and we have a whole slew of satellites orbiting our Star doing all manner of scientific discovery, all of which helps our understanding of what's going on in the massive physics phenomenon 8 minutes and 20 seconds away by radio. That said, Solar eruptions are still pretty unpredictable, much like the weather around us. Not because we don't want to know, but because this is a very complex one to solve, much like ionospheric propagation is hard to forecast, much easier to measure actual performance and much more accurate. So, if you want to know how well propagation is going to be today, turn on your radio and have a listen. If you want to know how great it's going to be tomorrow, look at the forecast, but bring an umbrella, or an FT8 transmitter. I'm Onno VK6FLAB.
