This episode is an excerpt of my lecture on general linguistics at the University of Bern (Switzerland) in 2009. Here are some Key Information: Colonial Lnguistics examines how colonial powers used language for control and the lasting impacts on indigenous languages. This episode covers historical contexts, theoretical foundations, impacts on indigenous languages, identity, postcolonial and decolonial perspectives, and contemporary relevance. European colonial expansion used language as a tool for control, with missionaries documenting and altering indigenous languages. Colonial administrations promoted European languages in education, marginalizing indigenous tongues. Theoretical insights from Bourdieu's linguistic capital and Fanon's analysis of colonialism show how colonial languages conferred power and reshaped identities, often devaluing indigenous languages. Colonialism caused language shift, death, and the creation of creoles and pidgins. Efforts to revitalize endangered languages, such as Judo Persian, persist. Language is key to identity, with colonial policies creating linguistic hierarchies and internalized inferiority among indigenous language speakers. Indigenous communities resist by preserving and revitalizing their languages. Postcolonial states balance the use of colonial and indigenous languages, promoting multilingualism and challenging colonial ideologies. Digital platforms provide new opportunities and challenges for linguistic diversity.

When and where the next avalanche will happen is hard to predict. In a special cold laboratory in Davos, researchers simulate the effects of wind on fresh snow to better understand the mechanisms that trigger avalanches. For centuries, avalanches have posed a threat to mountain farmers and their livestock. With the development of winter tourism, roads, railways and hydropower plants, the interest in avalanche research and protective measures has grown. The origins of the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF date back to 1936, when a small group of researchers moved into a snow lab on the Weissfluhjoch summit above Davos. Today the institute monitors the conditions of avalanches throughout Switzerland, investigates the effects of climate change on snow cover and operates the national avalanche warning service.Researchers at the SLF study how snow is built up and how it changes under various conditions, how avalanches occur and how they move over the terrain. In this episode of "Exploring Science in Davos" we take you inside the institute's cold chambers. This podcast is an audio version of the SWI swissinfo.ch video series with the same title. Solar irradiance provides heat and light for life. It waxes and wanes with the cycle of solar activity, which currently cannot be predicted accurately. Solar storms can have a great impact on technology. In February 2022, a solar storm destroyed 40 Starlink satellites from Elon Musk's company SpaceX. Researchers in Davos are collaborating on several space experiments to find out more about solar physics. In 1904 the Prussian businessman Carl Dorno travelled to Davos with his daughter, who was suffering from tuberculosis. In those days the Alpine town was a health resort for tuberculosis patients. As an amateur meteorologist, he began to build scientific instruments with the aim of investigating how the climate influenced our health. This was the birth of the Physical Meteorological Observatory Davos (PMOD).In the early 1970s, the observatory also became home to an international calibration centre for radiation measurements, the World Radiation Center (WRC). The radiometers developed there are used by weather stations all over the world, not only on the ground but also in space. For instance, two instruments are on board the Solar Orbiter, a Sun-observing satellite developed by the European Space Agency (ESA).To make more accurate predictions about climate change, researchers in Davos need to better understand solar cycles, which last about 11 years. Why is there a lot of activity in some cycles and very little in others? Understanding these mechanisms also helps predict solar flares, which can interfere with technologies such as electricity grids, navigation and communications. In this episode of our Science in Davos series, PMOD/WRC director Louise Harra gives us an insight into the research with the Solar Orbiter instruments. This podcast is an audio version of the SWI swissinfo.ch video series with the same title. The small city of Davos in southeastern Switzerland, located at an altitude of 1,560m above sea level in the Swiss Alps, attracted tuberculosis patients back in the 1800s and 1900s after scientists discovered that clean mountain air had a positive effect on their health. However, with the development of antibiotics, the sanatoriums eventually lost their purpose. Today that same clean Davos air, marked by the absence of tree pollen, such as birch, oak or alder, minimal air pollution and extremely low amounts of indoor dust mites – presumably because of the cooler and dryer climate – is a draw for asthma and allergy patients seeking treatment in the town's clinics.Allergic diseases have become more prevalent in recent decades. They now affect more than one billion people worldwide, with estimates suggesting there could be up to four billion sufferers by 2050. While the reasons for this are not yet fully understood, experts believe several factors can contribute significantly to developing chronic diseases. Today we are exposed to many pollutants, such as chemical substances in our diet or cosmetics, worsening air pollution and microplastics. Thanks to the proximity to allergy patients and the ability to analyse various biosamples, Davos has become an ideal location for research and experiments in this field. As they pursue their exploration of the scientific side of the resort, Sara Ibrahim and Michele Andina visit the Swiss Institute of Allergy and Asthma Research (SIAF), where around 50 biologists, biochemists and physicians are working to understand what's causing allergic diseases and find preventive and curative treatments. This podcast is an audio version of the SWI swissinfo.ch video series with the same title. Before 1960, broken bones were treated simply by using plaster casts or traction. Then 13 Swiss surgeons began rethinking fracture treatment: they standardised instruments, screws and nails, scientifically evaluated every operation, and started training surgeons. On their tour of Davos's scientific communities, Sara and Michele go behind the scenes to see what new technologies are currently being developed. The AO Foundation in Davos has been a leader in research into the healing of bone fractures for decades. Today, more than 100 scientists and PhD students from all over the globe work at the AO Research Institute Davos (ARI), which is focused on pre-clinical research. They study biomechanics and the biology of bones, discs and cartilage, and work on new surgical techniques, tools and devices, such as "smart" implants that measure bone healing in patients. Some of ARI's work depends on tests with live animals to ensure that studies are not affected by any hidden issues that would prevent the translation of a concept or implant to patient treatments. ARI recently set up a barn for so-called “specific-pathogen-free” (SPF) sheep. For sheep to be deemed SPF, they are separated from conventional sheep and kept in a purpose-built stable. However, the goal is to gradually reduce the dependence on, and even someday completely forgo, animal tests. Several projects at the ARI are aimed at achieving this. This podcast is an audio version of the SWI swissinfo.ch video series with the same title. Dr. Karla Johanning, a native of Costa Rica, is the CEO and Founder of KJ Scientific & KJ Scientific Independent Testing Labs, an ISO /IEC 17025 accredited testing laboratory and Contract Research Organization (CRO) located in Georgetown, TX. Karla has dedicated her professional life to study different aspects of environmental biology and ecotoxicology in relation to human and environmental health. Dr. Johanning founded KJ Scientific in 2014 using an innovative technology that she developed with other Scientists in the US and Europe using fish liver cells to test in vitro metabolism of chemicals. The main application of this technology for risk assessment and compliance is to determine the bioaccumulation (accumulation in tissues) potential of some chemicals, ingredients in our every day's life products. This technology provides an alternative animal method to the use of whole animals for chemical testing for human and environmental safety. Karla has written many scientific articles on the subject and set up one of two labs in the world that can commercially provide services to test chemicals using KJ Scientific's own product- isolated fish liver cells from trout and other fish species of regulatory relevance. This new product testing lab – in collaboration with SC Johnson & Son – participated in the OECD (Organization for Economic and Co-operative Development) global Ring Trial with seven other laboratories (Dow Chemical, Du Pont, US EPA, Fraunhofer Institute, Givaudan, Procter & Gamble, SC Johnson & Son/KJ Scientific) to validate the fish in vitro metabolism technology. The Ring Trial resulted in the validation of standardized protocols - OECD Test Guidelines 319A and 319B – that can be used worldwide in testing chemicals for risk assessment.KJ Scientific Independent Testing Labs, a subsidiary of KJ Scientific, was established to focus on testing of hemp and CBD infused products. Initial accreditation for ISO /IEC 17025 was accomplished in mid 2020. Accreditation of full panel testing has been completed and KJ Scientific is one of few testing labs in Texas capable to test plant material, concentrates and infused products using in house, robust developed and validated methods. KJ Scientific Independent Testing Labs is not just a testing mill. It is a dedicated research facility continuing to uphold the overarching mission of delivering the highest quality service to ensure human and environmental health safety. Dr. Johanning was one of the speakers in the Cannabis testing panel at the Texas Marijuana Policy Conference in Nov 2020. KJ Scientific Independent Testing Lab was the selected lab to test the hemp samples in the first Taste of Texas Hemp Cup in December 2020.Dr. Johanning's lab has collaborated with researchers at Baylor University (TX), University of Bern (Switzerland) and, Nicholls State University (LA).Dr. Johanning earned a Bachelor's degree at the University of Costa Rica (Costa Rica), Master and PhD degrees at the University of Rhode Island (RI, USA). She completed two postdoctoral positions at the Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Louisiana Medical Center and at the Tulane University Cancer Center. She worked as a Sr. Research Scientist at the Tulane Center for Bioenvironmental Research before moving to Austin where she settled.Visit kjscientific.com and learn about their testing services.

In this interview, Nina Burri talks about her transformation from a ballet dancer to a contortionist at an age when people usually stop practising professional contortion. She gives us an insight into the process and what it took to go through this metamorphosis on a physical as well as on mental level, and what it takes today. She also gives insights into her perception of life. About Nina Burri is an exceptional entertainer and stage performer originally from Bern-Switzerland. After a 10 year very successful ballet career for the best dance companies in the world (e.g. Béjart Ballet Lausanne) and shows such as the world famous „Moulin Rouge“ in Paris, Nina decided to go one step further in her career. She left everything behind and went to China to learn the art of contortion and hand-balancing. After 6 months and 8 hour training-sessions a day she came back to Europe and created her first solo act „Goldeneye“ - an homage to the James Bond movies that became so popular that she almost immediately got booked for high-class galas, corporate events, TV Shows and festivals all over the world. Nina is an award winning artist who is known for her beautiful looks, professionalism and amazing charisma and talent. Her breakthrough in Europe came with the second place in the TV Show „Switzerland’s Got Talent“ in 2011. In July 2014 Nina was given the US Greencard for her unique career and achievements. And as a finalist for „America’s Got Talent“ in 2014, she received worldwide recognition in front of millions of viewers on TV and the world wide web. Besides her stage performances, Nina works as a speaker, model and actress and is regularly presenting festivals and galas as a host. In 2021 she was given the “Lifetime Achievement Award'' for her 35-year long career on stage. Nina is considered the oldest professional working contortionist in the world and is happy to keep entertaining audiences with her exceptional art. „A Million Dollar Act“ – Howard Stern Official Website: ninaburri.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/ninaburriofficial Facebook: www.facebook.com/ninaburriofficial Youtube: youtube.com/user/ninaburri

Tim and Sean are back for another riveting episode of Down the Track. The in-studio guest is Maxine Paholek, back in Australia on break from Boise State University where as a Freshman she established herself as a key member of the Bronco’s NCAA Cross Country and Track squads. Maxine provides great insight into her experience so far in the NCAA system, and adapting to life in general as a US College student. With some great performances over the cross country season then recording a substantial PB in her specialist track event the 3000m Steeple, Maxine talks us through how she approached each season and the usual highs and lows along the way. In international news the Australian performances in Europe continue with Ninove (Belgium) and Bern (Switzerland) playing hos to a number of Australians including Ryan & Genevieve Gregson, Michelle Jenneke, James Hansen and Nick Hough. Heidi See popped out a 4:33 mile in the USA, while Georgia Winkcup continued her strong progression in the steeple with a World Championship qualifier in Birmingham. Domestically we had the Australian Half Marathon Championship on the Sunshine Coast with Lisa Weightman highlighting the stellar field to collect a $25,000 bonus by running the fastest Half Marathon on Australian soil. An unfortunate directional error by the officials lead to Jack Rayner being DQ’d, allowing Kevin Batt to claim the Australian title. The world’s biggest timed fun run, Sydney’s City to Surf, saw Victorian based Harry Summers almost claim Steve Moneghetti’s long standing race record, falling just 2sec shy of the mark. South Australian Tara Palm continued on from her impressive Run at Adelaide’s Fitzy’s 5 to claim the women’s title in the Harbour City. Athletics Victoria’s General Manager of Sport Delivery, Ross Cunningham, joins the Podcast to talk about the upcoming Summer season. With some new initiatives, including the introduction of the Athletics Victoria Shield League, Ross details what participants can expect from the new season. With Sally Pearson announcing her retirement, the team examine her legacy to the sport and potential gaps that may now appear within the Australian team environment at the major championships. In a recurring hot topic, more issues have been raised about Nike shoe technology, this time the spikes used by Sifan Hassan to break the World Mile record. With the Australian Cross Country Championship not far away, Sean and Tim review the main contenders based on who they believe to be running and assess Victoria’s chances to win the women’s and men’s team titles. BE-BLUESED is an annual blues workshop weekend held in Bern (Switzerland). The past three years, the organisers have hired teachers to teach in an immersion based style: all 4 teachers dance at the same time, with minimal verbal instruction, so that students can take from everybody's movement.
Evidence matters. Yet even before “fake news” became a political weapon, it’s been notoriously difficult to get evidence into the policymaking process. How can we keep good evidence from being overwhelmed by bad politics? In this conversation, moderated by ABC Radio National journalist Eleanor Hall, three world-renowned experts talk about their experience from the front lines of research and policymaking in contentious areas – climate change, refugees and, where the two meet, climate change- and disaster-related displacement. Professor John Church is Australia’s most credentialled expert on sea-level rise and a long-time research scientist with the government CSIRO. He joined UNSW in 2016 as a professor in the Climate Change Research Centre, so he’s seen Australia’s approach to science and international obligations from inside and outside government. UNSW Scientia Professor and Kaldor Centre Director Jane McAdam is a pioneer in research on climate change- and disaster-related displacement, advising governments and international organisations including UNHCR. In 2017, her work in this field was described as 'transformative' by the jury of the prestigious Calouste Gulbenkian Prize for Human Rights, which she was the first Australian to win. Walter Kälin has extensive international experience as scholar and policymaker, most recently serving as Envoy of the Chair of the Platform on Disaster Displacement (and formerly of its predecessor, the Nansen Initiative on Disaster-Induced Cross-Border Displacement), providing strategic advice and leadership to this state-led process working towards better protection for people in the context of disasters and climate change. Professor Emeritus for international and constitutional law at the University of Bern (Switzerland), he has served the United Nations in various capacities, including as Representative of the UN Secretary-General on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons and twice as a member of the UN Human Rights Committee.

Event recording from 08/03/2018. The European continent was struck by a wave of international terrorism for the first time in the 1970s, and governments had to develop concerted responses and policies to counter the threat. In The Origins of International Counterterrorism, Aviva Guttmann analyses this inter-governmental process from Switzerland’s perspective. Swiss authorities played a surprisingly important role in shaping international counterterrorism cooperation, especially on the secret intelligence level. In this lecture, Aviva Guttmann presents her main research findings and conclusions of the book. Her talk is followed by a comment given by Dr Marco Wyss (Lancaster University). The event will be of interest to anyone interested in issues pertaining to counterterrorism, crisis management, multilateral diplomacy, and intelligence cooperation and to anyone seeking new insight into the Global Cold War, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the role of neutrals in this context. Biography: Aviva Guttmann, Ph.D. (2016), is a Research Fellow and Teaching Associate in Intelligence and International Security at King’s College London, Department of War Studies. Her research is financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). She has been a visiting scholar at the Johns Hopkins University – SAIS Europe. She was educated at the University of Basel (B.A. Hons philosophy) and at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva (M.A. international history), Sciences Po in Paris, and the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE). She was awarded a Ph.D. in contemporary history by the University of Bern (Switzerland). During the last year of her Ph.D., Aviva was a doctoral visiting fellow at the Handa Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV) at the University of St. Andrews (Scotland). The event was chaired by Professor Michael S. Goodman (King’s College London).
On this podcast we had the privilege of getting to know Marius Bühlmann and the church he currently leads; Bern Vineyard in Switzerland. Marius shares his journey of growing up in the Vineyard and how the core values we share as an international movement have been the ones that have shaped the actions that Bern Vineyard has taken in order to tend to and nurture the community in Bern and to call his church to be a Kingdom witness within the cultural context in Europe. In particular, this has led his church to actively engage with the Syrian refugee crisis in Greece, beginning in 2016. Marius shares how God works and acts through us and the incredible outcomes that come from interactions rooted in love, compassion, and justice and comes against a pervasive culture of fear. Interview originally recorded in June 2017. Bern Vineyard website : http://www.vineyard-bern.ch/home/

Dr Jean-Francois Dufour discusses the management of hepatocellular carcinoma and explains which preventative measures are being used to reduce the incidence of this disease. Dr Dufour explains what factors are important in tumour assessment, how patients can be stratified based on these assessments, and how each of these different patient sub-groups should be treated. The outcomes of some key clinical trials assessing different treatment options are discussed and areas are highlighted where available treatment options are insufficient.
The Wisebed wireless sensor network testbed provides a federated experimentation facility covering several European universities. For scalable management of access control we have designed and implemented a single-sign-on and attribute-based authentication and authorization infrastructure based on the Shibboleth software, which has been developed by the Internet2 Middleware Initiative. Shibboleth is usually used for protecting browser-based access of web resources. We have designed and implemented an extension to protect web services using the Simple Object Access Protocol. This extension allows both user and machine authentication for web services. As a proof of concept, we implemented a complete reservation system for sensor nodes in the Wisebed test-bed federation. Two different user interfaces based on a web page and an iPhone application have been implemented. Although implemented for Shibboleth, the architecture can be easily adapted to other authentication and authorization infrastructures. About the speaker: Torsten Braun got his Ph.D. degree from University of Karlsruhe (Germany) in 1993. From 1994 to 1995 he has been a guest scientist at INRIA Sophia-Antipolis (France). From 1995 to 1997 he has been working at the IBM European Networking Centre Heidelberg (Germany) as a project leader and senior consultant. He has been a full professor of Computer Science at the University of Bern (Switzerland) since 1998 and director of the Institute of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at University of Bern since 2007. He has been member of the SWITCH (Swiss education and research network) board of trustees since 2001.
