Episode #530: The Hidden Architecture: Why Your Startup Needs an Ontology (Before It's Too Late)

In this episode of the Crazy Wisdom Podcast, host Stewart Alsop sits down with Larry Swanson, a knowledge architect, community builder, and host of the Knowledge Graph Insights podcast. They explore the relationship between knowledge graphs and ontologies, why these technologies matter in the age of AI, and how symbolic AI complements the current wave of large language models. The conversation traces the history of neuro-symbolic AI from its origins at Dartmouth in 1956 through the semantic web vision of Tim Berners-Lee, examining why knowledge architecture remains underappreciated despite being deployed at major enterprises like Netflix, Amazon, and LinkedIn. Swanson explains how RDF (Resource Description Framework) enables both machines and humans to work with structured knowledge in ways that relational databases can't, while Alsop shares his journey from knowledge management director to understanding the practical necessity of ontologies for business operations. They discuss the philosophical roots of the field, the separation between knowledge management practitioners and knowledge engineers, and why startups often overlook these approaches until scale demands them. You can find Larry's podcast at KGI.fm or search for Knowledge Graph Insights on Spotify and YouTube.Timestamps00:00 Introduction to Knowledge Graphs and Ontologies01:09 The Importance of Ontologies in AI04:14 Philosophy's Role in Knowledge Management10:20 Debating the Relevance of RDF15:41 The Distinction Between Knowledge Management and Knowledge Engineering21:07 The Human Element in AI and Knowledge Architecture25:07 Startups vs. Enterprises: The Knowledge Gap29:57 Deterministic vs. Probabilistic AI32:18 The Marketing of AI: A Historical Perspective33:57 The Role of Knowledge Architecture in AI39:00 Understanding RDF and Its Importance44:47 The Intersection of AI and Human Intelligence50:50 Future Visions: AI, Ontologies, and Human BehaviorKey Insights1. Knowledge Graphs Combine Structure and Instances Through Ontological Design. A knowledge graph is built using an ontology that describes a specific domain you want to understand or work with. It includes both an ontological description of the terrain—defining what things exist and how they relate to one another—and instances of those things mapped to real-world data. This combination of abstract structure and concrete examples is what makes knowledge graphs powerful for discovery, question-answering, and enabling agentic AI systems. Not everyone agrees on the precise definition, but this understanding represents the practical approach most knowledge architects use when building these systems.2. Ontology Engineering Has Deep Philosophical Roots That Inform Modern Practice. The field draws heavily from classical philosophy, particularly ontology (the nature of what you know), epistemology (how you know what you know), and logic. These thousands-year-old philosophical frameworks provide the rigorous foundation for modern knowledge representation. Living in Heidelberg surrounded by philosophers, Swanson has discovered how much of knowledge graph work connects upstream to these philosophical roots. This philosophical grounding becomes especially important during times when institutional structures are collapsing, as we need to create new epistemological frameworks for civilization—knowledge management and ontology become critical tools for restructuring how we understand and organize information.3. The Semantic Web Vision Aimed to Transform the Internet Into a Distributed Database. Twenty-five years ago, Tim Berners-Lee, Jim Hendler, and Ora Lassila published a landmark article in Scientific American proposing the semantic web. While Berners-Lee had already connected documents across the web through HTML and HTTP, the semantic web aimed to connect all the data—essentially turning the internet into a giant database. This vision led to the development of RDF (Resource Description Framework), which emerged from DARPA research and provides the technical foundation for building knowledge graphs and ontologies. The origin story involved solving simple but important problems, like disambiguating whether "Cook" referred to a verb, noun, or a person's name at an academic conference.4. Symbolic AI and Neural Networks Represent Complementary Approaches Like Fast and Slow Thinking. Drawing on Kahneman's "thinking fast and slow" framework, LLMs represent the "fast brain"—learning monsters that can process enormous amounts of information and recognize patterns through natural language interfaces. Symbolic AI and knowledge graphs represent the "slow brain"—capturing actual knowledge and facts that can counter hallucinations and provide deterministic, explainable reasoning. This complementarity is driving the re-emergence of neuro-symbolic AI, which combines both approaches. The fundamental distinction is that symbolic AI systems are deterministic and can be fully explained, while LLMs are probabilistic and stochastic, making them unsuitable for applications requiring absolute reliability, such as industrial robotics or pharmaceutical research.5. Knowledge Architecture Remains Underappreciated Despite Powering Major Enterprises. While machine learning engineers currently receive most of the attention and budget, knowledge graphs actually power systems at Netflix (the economic graph), Amazon (the product graph), LinkedIn, Meta, and most major enterprises. The technology has been described as "the most astoundingly successful failure in the history of technology"—the semantic web vision seemed to fail, yet more than half of web pages now contain RDF-formatted semantic markup through schema.org, and every major enterprise uses knowledge graph technology in the background. Knowledge architects remain underappreciated partly because the work is cognitively difficult, requires talking to people (which engineers often avoid), and most advanced practitioners have PhDs in computer science, logic, or philosophy.6. RDF's Simple Subject-Predicate-Object Structure Enables Meaning and Data Linking. Unlike relational databases that store data in tables with rows and columns, RDF uses the simplest linguistic structure: subject-predicate-object (like "Larry knows Stuart"). Each element has a unique URI identifier, which permits precise meaning and enables linked data across systems. This graph structure makes it much easier to connect data after the fact compared to navigating tabular structures in relational databases. On top of RDF sits an entire stack of technologies including schema languages, query languages, ontological languages, and constraints languages—everything needed to turn data into actionable knowledge. The goal is inferring or articulating knowledge from RDF-structured data.7. The Future Requires Decoupled Modular Architectures Combining Multiple AI Approaches. The vision for the future involves separation of concerns through microservices-like architectures where different systems handle what they do best. LLMs excel at discovering possibilities and generating lists, while knowledge graphs excel at articulating human-vetted, deterministic versions of that information that systems can reliably use. Every one of Swanson's 300 podcast interviews over ten years ultimately concludes that regardless of technology, success comes down to human beings, their behavior, and the cultural changes needed to implement systems. The assumption that we can simply eliminate people from processes misses that huma...

And what does that mean for the rest of us?   In this episode of Being Human, I speak with Alastair Moore, AI strategist and co-founder of ventures helping organisations navigate the machine intelligence revolution. Alastair argues that we've already crossed a threshold: AI isn't just assisting knowledge workers — it's now performing tasks at the frontier of research, science, and complex problem-solving.   We explore how large models are reshaping entire categories of white-collar work, why organisations are unprepared for the acceleration curve, and what skills will matter in a world where cognition becomes a shared capability between humans and machines. This is a grounded, practical, and sometimes unsettling conversation about the next decade of work.   We discuss: AI at the scientific frontier Automation of knowledge work Human–machine complementarities Skills for the post-GPT economy Links: DeepFlow - the company co-founded by Alastair

In global strategy, huge pressure points always involve the world's most important liquids. Energy uncertainty is now the norm. The destruction of Turkey will make openings for the West. Persian nuclear programs reflect prophesies. A short war is predicted. Turkey will strike Greece with a nod from NATO. Red rain and Iran's water crisis. Kharg Island sits on powerful and vulnerable energy routes. A strategic facility with millions of gallons stored. Fixed assets often become strategic liabilities. It's all about oil price stability. Bibi may be trying to kill peace talks. Geo-ambiguity is gold. The psycho Mullah's are exporting Islam. Tehran's priorities are being attacked from all around. On Kharg, it's indigenous people only for stability. Keeping the Israel card instead of playing it. In 1978, Obama's mom and Peter Strock Sr. made Iran. Remember when Killary wanted to know where Nimrod was buried? Water is a social stability pressure point for outside actors. A different nuclear capability threshold is now in play. Trump's verbiage disciplines allies and re-writes change. Managed fear is a great weapon. Remember, some of what we are hearing may actually be true. Buckle up with your faith in God, because the ride is going to get bumpy.

This lesson explores the doctrine of man, centered on the profound reality of being created in God's image. We discover how this divine image manifests in official, formal, and ethical dimensions, shaping our knowledge, dignity, and purpose. Through the lens of covenant theology and Reformed thought, we investigate humanity's original condition, the impact of sin, and the enduring significance of bearing God's image. This foundational understanding strengthens apologetics by illuminating the connection between believers and nonbelievers, affirming that all people exist coram Deo—in the presence of God.  02:24 The Point of Contact: The Image of God 08:47 The Image of God and Sin 19:11 Narrow and Broad Senses of the Image of God 27:20 The Image of God and Human Knowledge 35:51 Summary and Conclusion  Register for this free on-demand course on our website to track your progress, download supplemental resources, and assess your understanding through quizzes for each lesson. We welcomed guest Bryant Cruz, founder of New Sapience, a company developing artificial intelligence technology that processes language in a fundamentally different way from traditional models such as ChatGPT and GROK. New Sapience's approach involves building internal models of the world that mirror human knowledge, allowing their AI to reason and understand more like a person rather than relying on statistical language patterns. To start the interview, I offered Bryant a quick summary of the key difference in New Sapience's technology compared to a traditional AI company in that New Sapience does not rely on statistical word associations like current mainstream AI models. Instead, as then explained by Bryant, their system creates an internal, structured representation of knowledge—more akin to how humans comprehend and retrieve information. He emphasized that while models like ChatGPT often produce plausible responses, their accuracy can be misleading, and users should be cautious when relying on them for critical tasks. Read the full summary of this program at www.thespaceshow.com for this program on this date, July 11, 2025. You can also read the summary on our Substack page, doctorspace.substack.com.Bryant shared his journey into AI, shaped by his experiences as a naval aviator and an engineer on the Hubble Space Telescope. In the mid-1980s, he developed an expert system to streamline spacecraft operations, inspired by the efficiency of aircraft systems. This innovation utilized tabular displays and real-time data but was ultimately limited by scalability challenges. Realizing the need to embed knowledge rather than just data processing into machines, he founded a new company to explore advanced AI applications for space systems. In the 1990s, Bryant developed a state-based markup language for spacecraft control systems. This tool allowed engineers to describe spacecraft operations as state machines, significantly reducing costs related to launch integration and testing. Despite its technical advantages, the system wasn't adopted by government or military institutions due to a preference for maintaining large control room staffing. Compounding the challenge, the market for satellite communication was disrupted by the expansion of undersea fiber-optic cables which were far more cost effective. Bryant eventually sold this technology.Bryant reflected on the evolution of AI, including the decision to avoid the term "AI" early on due to industry disillusionment. His team instead focused on automation technology and the curation of computable human knowledge, which became the foundation for New Sapience. While the company has yet to secure clients in the space industry, its platform is now ready for real-world deployment, offering a common-sense, language-independent knowledge system.I presented a listener email question asking about New Sapience's relevance to self-driving cars, such as those operated by Waymo. Bryant acknowledged the strengths of current vehicle AI in detecting and reacting to programmed scenarios, but stressed their limitations in unfamiliar situations. He compared the ideal AI to a “higher brain function,” much like a cowboy guiding cattle. He also discussed the compact nature of their knowledge structures, making them suitable for autonomous spacecraft.Bryant introduced Sapien, the core technology aiming to endow machines with human-like understanding. He highlighted its ability to store and retrieve curated knowledge efficiently—something traditional education systems or data-heavy AI cannot match. Applications for Sapien include telepresence, remote operations, and a forthcoming consumer product for personal assistance and memory support. A caller, Fremont John, engaged Bryant in a thoughtful discussion about these innovations. Bryant reiterated the company's active crowdfunding campaigns and vision for broader expansion. When asked by both John and myself about timelines for product demos and marketing efforts, Bryant estimated that these could begin within the year. However, he acknowledged that specific timelines remain uncertain due to the evolving nature of their development. As the show wrapped up—with a minor audio glitch from Bryant's headset—he summarized his New Sapience presentation and answered a final email from listener Frank about the potential for AI-enabled robotic service dogs for the visually impaired. Bryant responded optimistically, noting that such robots are close to being ready for broader use. He confirmed that New Sapience is working on interfaces to bring their AI into this field, with a goal of creating service-capable robotic companions as part of their development roadmap. You can listen to this interview at www.thespaceshow.com (July 11, 2025 episode) or on our Substack page: doctorspace.substack.com.For more information on Bryant Cruz and New Sapience, visit their website: https://newsapience.com..Special thanks to our sponsors:Northrup Grumman, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Helix Space in Luxembourg, Celestis Memorial Spaceflights, Astrox Corporation, Dr. Haym Benaroya of Rutgers University, The Space Settlement Progress Blog by John Jossy, The Atlantis Project, and Artless EntertainmentOur Toll Free Line for Live Broadcasts: 1-866-687-7223For real time program participation, email Dr. Space at: drspace@thespaceshow.comThe Space Show is a non-profit 501C3 through its parent, One Giant Leap Foundation, Inc. When chatbots speak fluently, we lean on them, projecting empathy and intent (aka the ELIZA effect). But that fluency masks how AI lacks memory, intention, and our messy lived experience. The risk? We might outsource too much of our thinking, emotional nuance, and sense of self to machines that don't actually feel. iPhone 16's AI Moment: Hardware Flex, But Software Still LagsApple's gearing up for the next iPhone launch with slick hardware moves: possible thinner iPhone Air, A18 chips, boosted Neural Engine—and solid on-device AI firepower. But true AI smarts? Still MIA. Analysts say upgrades alone won't cut it without major AI breakthroughs or bigger acquisitions. Our Brains Do Stuff AI Can't—YetThe human brain instantly senses what we can do in a scene—like walk on a path or swim in water—while AI systems totally miss that vibe. Dutch researchers found special brain signals that predict our next move without thinking. The headline: AI still can't match our built-in “action radar.”AI's Global Divide: Computing Power Is the New FrontierNot everyone's getting AI equally—and it's mostly about compute. The U.S. and allies are locking down AI chips and model infrastructure, while less-resourced countries lag, widening global tech gaps . This isn't just about data—it's about who actually runs the AI race based on where the servers live.AI Is About to Be Your New Lawyer, Doctor, and Financial AdvisorForget generic chatbots—AI built specifically for legal, medical, and financial advice is going mainstream. Think slick, real-time interfaces that zip past old-school directories. Professionals won't disappear, but the first impression? Totally digital. Your attention's the new currency.Smell Meets AI: Digitizing the Sense of Scent for Health & SustainabilityAI is finally learning how to smell—using molecule scans and neural nets to map scents like a digital olfactory fingerprint. This “olfactory intelligence” could speed up perfume creation, detect diseases in breath, make smarter bug repellents, and even help us share scents digitally or monitor environmental hazards.

We that acquaint ourselves with every zone,And pass both tropics and behold the poles,When we come home, are to ourselves unknown,And unacquainted still with our own souls.Today's poem is Davies' lengthy meditation on what man can know and what he could stand to learn. Happy reading.Poet and lawyer Sir John Davies was born in Wiltshire and educated at Winchester College and Queen's College, Oxford, though historians disagree about whether he graduated. In 1588, he enrolled in the Middle Temple, where he studied with John Donne, and was called to the bar in 1595. In addition to his legal study, Davies wrote poetry, notably Orchestra, or, A Poeme of Dancing (1596). Davies's other works include a series of epigrams drawn from his youthful misadventures; Nosce teipsum (1594), a poetic treatise on the immortality of the soul; and Hymnes of Astraea in Acrosticke Verse (1599),an acrostic poem spelling the words Elisabetha Regina. Davies also contributed poetic dialogues to Francis Davison's Poetical Rhapsody(1602). His Collected Poems appeared in 1622. It is thought that Davies accompanied King James to Scotland after Queen Elizabeth's death in 1603. Eventually knighted by the king, Davies was made solicitor general for Ireland and emerged as a champion of legal reform in Ireland. He attempted to lay the grounds for a strong civil society, albeit one that benefited England and English rule in all cases. Davies helped cement pro-English property laws and advocated the expulsion of Catholic priests to shore up Protestantism. He was appointed speaker in the Irish Parliament in 1613 and presided over the first Protestant majority. He returned to England and served in the Parliament of 1621. Charles I appointed Davies lord chief justice in 1626, but he died just before officially taking office. John Donne gave his funeral oration. Davies was buried in St. Martin-in-the-Fields.-bio via Poetry Foundation This is a public episode. When you give an opinion on something, is it based on how you felt in the past or on research and experience from the past? If it is from how you felt in the past, most likely the other person won't share any empathy with you and you're not going to change how the other person is feeling. Plus it's lazy thinking and you just went into a past experience that you had and it might not be valid. Yes, there are always going to be exceptions and it might have happened to you, but that could have been a one in a million occurrence. It doesn't show that you have any understanding of the situation. So seek to understand first by asking clarifying questions and doing some research yourself. It's okay to say you don't know anything about the situation and then start to get some information in your life so you can make a better opinion. When you say stuff, make sure there is substance behind the words to make the world a much better place.  Journal Prompts How can you show more understanding of a situation by saying “I don't know”, asking questions, and doing your research? How can you ask questions to ensure others are held accountable for their opinions in an effective manner?

#26 - Heisenberg's Uncertainty in Biology and Human Knowledge

Justin Riddle Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 27, 2022 32:33

In episode 26 of the Quantum Consciousness series, Justin Riddle discusses Heisenberg's uncertainty principle: the idea that every quantum bit comprises a bit of information and a bit of entropy such that knowledge of one dimension reduced knowledge of the other. We can think of each qubit has having two perpendicular axes: zero/one and plus/minus. The state of the qubit represents a point moving around on these axes. When you measure a qubit in the zero/one dimension, then it ends up getting reduced to a zero or one. From that state, the plus/minus dimension is now equal probability. By knowing about one dimension, we induce entropy in the other. You can only make one measurement at a time, so it is impossible to know whether the system is zero/one and plus/minus at the same time. In practice, physical systems, like an atom, will exhibit uncertainty between their position and momentum. This is more than just our knowledge of the system. When you know the momentum, the position is maximally smeared out across all possible options. This changes what the future of the system will look like. Biology might be leveraging measurement to change the future of physical systems like ions. In an ion channel, the center of the ion channel is so small that the ion gets spatially measured when passing through the channel. This has a dramatic effect on the momentum of the ion which could facilitate the transport of the ion to other receptor proteins. In addition, the uncertainty principle might be relevant to understanding human cognition, in that our knowledge of certain properties might coexist within an uncertainty relationship like that of position and momentum. By learning about one property, we reduce our knowledge of the other property. This is quite the divergence from classical models of human cognition. Finally, a speculation on how the uncertainty principle might be reflective of some deeper uncertainty in ascertaining existential truth. Carl Jung suggested that we can only ever reach a half truth, and that the core of reality is brimming with paradoxes. The more you get closer to some truth, the further you are from its complimentary opposite, which is also true. This form of cosmic censorship through paradox could be the ultimate expression of the uncertainty principle. Join me on this exciting delve into the mysteries of human consciousness through the lens of quantum mechanics.

Welcome back to the Robin Zander Show!  For today's episode, I sat down with Jude Gomila to talk about his journey as an entrepreneur and his start-up Golden. I first met Jude, and learned about Golden, when Zander Media was hired to create an explainer video about the company. We had 10 days to get up to speed on this company, craft a script, and put together this short video: https://vimeo.com/390117170 I was really looking forward to a more leisurely interview with Jude, but this conversation dramatically exceeded my expectations.  Jude is a quirky, charismatic leader, who has invested in over 200 startups and is out to build the world's first self-constructing knowledge database. Learn more about Golden at golden.com. Jude is a fellow circus performer and a polymath with interests ranging from robotics, space, and the learning process. He, and his company Golden, are on a quest to map all of human knowledge.  I hope you enjoy this interview!
