Send us a Text Message. As human beings, we are all more than just one thing. We each hold more than one identity, and our cultural and ethnic backgrounds play huge parts in how we experience the world. Today In the Den, guest host Sara LaWall dives into the intersection of Latinx and Queer identities with two special guests, Gabe Morales & Alex Carmelo.Special Guest: Alex CarmeloAlex was born in Galveston, TX, and raised in the city of South Houston. He was brought up by his grandparents. Their strong dedication and discipline made him the person he is today.  Alex was the first person in his family to graduate from high school and attend college. His life journey has included some tough times, but he continues to fight not only for himself but the community he serves.  As an openly gay Latino/Hispanic, he is truly passionate about helping the community. His first leadership position was as the executive liaison for Houston Millennials.  He currently sits on the board of directors of the National Hispanic Professional Organization, Houston Dia Los Muertos, and the Houston Livestock show.  Alex truly believes that as he empowers himself, he can help others become leaders.  Motto:  “Don't talk the talk, walk the walk.”Special Guest: Gabriel MoralesGabriel is a 34 year old first-generation Houstonian. After years of yearning to study, practice, and work hands-on in the field of art, he was lucky enough to stumble upon a graphic design course at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD), where he found his calling. Soon after, under the leadership of his graphic design professor/mentor, Gabriel joined the inaugural Graphic Design Research Initiative program at UHD, where he worked alongside his professor and a select group of fellow students to gain real-world experience in design projects with non-profit organizations. Gabriel was then invited to interview for a graphic design student position at the UHD Advancement & University Relations office, where he was offered a full-time position, after graduating with a BA in Fine Arts. Gabriel has been designing with UHD for eight years now and has since earned the title of Manager of Graphic Design. Outside of work, Gabriel does freelance design and spends his free time hanging out with his family, best friends/roommates, and his cat, watching movies, and singing along to musicals. Links from the Show:Join Mama Dragons today at www.mamadragons.org Mama Dragons on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mamadragons Mama Dragons on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themamadragons/ In the Den is made possible by generous donors like you. Episode 479 - Identity Shift   Today we have Destiny. She is 29 and lives in South Houston, TX. The team has been working on the application for about 8 months and we have been told, in another 4-6 months, Café RE will become a nonprofit.   We are going to be able to take our yearly service project to the next level, in which we can receive donations, then use those funds to make this planet a better place for all. The roles we play in life are no exception. You are always changing. There was a time when your identity was an infant, then a child. Paul shares the many identities that he has had over the years and that he no longer identifies as a drinker.   Identities of some of the largest beer brands in the history of the world are changing seemingly overnight and they are changing their identities for one reason only. That is because you are changing your identity. White Claw now has an AF option, only because enough customers have changed their identities and are beginning to ask for it and that's the only reason why White Claw has this option.   As your identity changes in regard to alcohol, start asking for what your identity craves. Next time you are at a restaurant, ask if they have an AF drink menu or what their options are.   It is 100% okay to change your identity to a non-drinker in a seemingly drunk world.   Athletic Greens   [09:19] Paul introduces Destiny:   Destiny is 29 years old; she is married, and they have a three-year-old son and a German Shorthaired Pointer. For work, Destiny is a nurse where she sees a lot of the damage that alcohol can cause.   Destiny began drinking in her teens and it progressed from there. She worked in the restaurant industry for almost 10 years while attending nursing school. After graduating and starting to work in the ICU, she spent a lot of her time off drinking.   She had her son in May of 2020 and suffered with some postpartum issues. Added to the already stressful ICU, the pandemic was happening, and she got married. Destiny says there was always an excuse to drink, and she often found herself the drunkest person in the room and frequently had blackouts.   Destiny would be able to quit for small stretches of time and would attempt forms of moderation. Her husband would mention that she was drinking too much, and she would deflect and shift some blame on the situations around her that she felt called for drinking.   A rock-bottom moment for Destiny was when she realized that her marriage was beginning to suffer along with all of her goals in life. She says she would have plans that she wanted to but felt like there was a wall that she kept running into. She pictures the wall as alcohol and everything else was on the other side.   Destiny has not gone to AA but says she enjoys reading books, listening to podcasts, and surrounding herself with supportive people who themselves do not drink. She has been spending a lot of time at the gym, she and her husband have started counseling, and she has be going to therapy. When the cravings hit, she plays the tape forward and recalls how things will end if she does decide to drink.   Destiny's best sober moment: playing fetch with her dog and her young son.   Destiny's parting piece of guidance: if you're thinking about it, you should probably do it.   Café RE – promo code OPPORTUNITY waives set up fee. "Books can be the perfect prescriptions to let us know that we're going to be okay.”  - John SchuJohn Schu's entire life has been shaped by books. As a kid, he fell in love with Shel Silverstein; Emily Dickinson comforted him as he was battling an eating disorder, and “The One and Only Ivan,” well, that book changed his life. In fact, it nearly put him into debt (he tells that story in the episode!)The powerful impact books have had on his life inspired him to dedicate his life to sharing this power with everyone he can. His career as an educator led him to the library, the library led him across America, and now he has started a new career as a writer of stories himself.John made his debut with "This is a School," followed by "This is a Story" and "The Gift of Story." However, in his latest work, "Louder Than Hunger," he bravely delves into a new realm of vulnerability. This semi-autobiographical tale draws from the most challenging period in his life, navigating the depths of his battle with anorexia. In this episode, Mr. Schu, as in Mr.SchuReads,  tells us about the transformative reads that shaped his life and explains how some of those stories helped him and some actually harmed him. No sabes a quién reclamar.

She assures her team of the truth that God told Moses in that moment, that everything they need, they already have. She challenges her players to ponder three ideas: -"Don't discount what God adds value to." -"Don't limit God with your poor perspective." -"Don't worry about what others will think." There was so much to share with this interview I had to break it into 2 shows. Part 2 will come out later this season. My guests today are Brett Bray and Theresa Hutchinson of the late Fetching Lab Brewery down in way South Houston. Brett was a full-time financial advisor and a part-time homebrewer so he has qualified to own a brewery as most of us in the beginning. Based on Brett's research, he felt opening a brewery when there were less than 50 TX breweries was “so darn viable that you'd be a total idiot not to do it.” In 2011, he announced on Twitter with the only tweet he's even sent that he was going to open a brewery. At this point, he'd already been thinking about it for 2 years. So he homebrewed hard for a year and a half every weekend on an all-grain system he cobbled together himself, with a little design help from Theresa. After 6 long years of due diligence, practice and planning, Theresa and Brett finally ripped open their doors in 2015. After ditching names like BadAss Brewing, at the last minute they decided to have the entire brewery inspired by their 11 week-old yellow lab. Which Theresa can do a much better job describing than I can…. Join us this week on the She Buys It Podcast as Whitney interviews Mary Claire Haver, MD, a doctor, business woman, and real estate investor from South Houston. When administrative burdens were growing increasingly hard, the hours started getting harder to manage, and she was getting older, Mary Claire Haver, MD, and her husband decided they needed a change. She was burning out and she knew she needed to find alternative sources of income. She started looking about 5 years ago, and she started in direct sales in a skin care company. It taught her entrepreneurship, business, and running a team. Her husband, a successful oilfield engineer, kept looking for ways to diversify their income. Together they wanted to teach their kids that going to school and working for others wasn't the only way to be successful. They had the opportunity to move overseas for two years. She took a sabbatical and they had sold their house to their company and bought a new one with the equity. When they returned to the US, they wanted to build, but instead lived in their small house, paid it off, and began to plan. They lived there for four years while they bought the lot (with cash), met with architects, and planned to pay off the new house as soon as it was finished. However, when the time came to sell it, they thought, "Wait a minute... this could be rental property." And it happened. Listen in as Whitney and Dr. Haver talk about how she and her husband started their rental company, how she and her husband work it, and how she came to start her other business to help menopausal women lose weight and love their body. [EPISODE] SOHO and The Beginnings of An Amazing New York Museum On this show we will journey to SOHO, on our second special episode in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion. My guests will be Joyce Gold of Joyce Gold History Tours, and Charles Leslie, longtime SOHO resident (really pioneer) and founder of the Leslie Lohman Museum, the country’s and indeed the world’s pre-eminent museum of LGBTQ art. Segment 1 Jeff kicks off the show by introducing his first guest, Joyce Gold, of Joyce Gold History Tours. Both Jeff and Joyce discuss the shorthand name of South Houston, or SoHo. Joyce talks about how the neighborhood dates back to the mid 1600s, and how it went from a hilly neighborhood to a very leveled place. Joyce continues about how SoHo became one of the most residential places in 1820s, and turned to shopping, industries, and today we know it for art. Joyce continues about the history of shopping in the neighborhood, and mentions the history of the African Grove Theater. Jeff and Joyce go back and forth with other industries that got their start in SoHo. Segment 2 Joyce talks about the tours that she has coming up, including one of the Bowery, a Gilded Age tour, and tour of Greenwich Village. Jeff brings up the architectural structures in SoHo, and Joyce continues about the popular cast iron architecture in the 1850's, and the process it took to create these structures. Joyce brings up the Haughwout building in SoHo, and the excitement around the first elevator. She continues by talking about the evolution of structures in SoHo, and mentions the Puck Building and all it’s been used for. Joyce talks about city planner, Robert Moses, and how artists began to come to the neighborhood. Segment 3 Jeff returns with mentioning sponsors, followed by a plug of Good Morning New York with Vince Rocco. Introduction of second guest, Charles Leslie. Jeff gives a brief overview of Charles’ different contributions to the queer arts communities, and an introduction of Charles himself. Jeff discusses Charles’ inspiration for leaving home and early life to his experience in Europe. Jeff focuses briefly on Charles’ time in Marrakech after the revolution. Charles moved to SoHo after discovering a passion for film editing, as real estate was plentiful and accessible. Charles discusses his impact on zoning of SoHo. Jeff and Charles discuss his interest, collection, and exhibition of gay art, drawing inspiration to greco-roman nudes. The two transition to Charles’ experience with and diffusing of the Stonewall riot. Jeff returns to Charles’ exhibition shows of gay art and the increase in frequency following the events of Stonewall. Culminating in the formation of a commercial art museum (Leslie-Lohman Museum). Segment 4 Returns with the current exhibits at the Leslie-Lohman Museum - record of what happened after stonewall. Jeff transitions to the AIDS crisis and the subsequent temporary closing of the museum. Leslie and Fritz has worked quite successfully to the preservation of endangered gay art. Charles speaks of the popularization of larger canvas work, for commercial purposes, and thus the search for larger spaces to work. Artists would often buy large spaces for not very much money. Jeff and Charles speaks of the current “vibe” of SoHo and the change that brought this new vibe. Charles remarks of how SoHo has become more of a comfortable and clean neighborhood, though there is no clear future of the neighborhood. Jeff and Charles closes with any tips for landlords in the SoHo area - “think twice about retail space”.

Part two of my interview with my old runnin' partner, John T. Edge, delves into the genesis and development of his new book,  The Potlikker Papers: A Food History of The Modern South. I thought I'd just give you a taste of what John T. has to say regarding misconceptions about Southern culture and the importance of the region's food; a few auditory breadcrumbs, if you will.   "To speak of Southern culture, for the longest time people heard 'white Southern culture' when they heard that, or they heard 'Confederate-grounded Southern culture.' And the reality is that the South is as black as it is white. And, if anything, the imprint of black peoples on the region, and on its food and on its music, is actually primary, not secondary. And once you embrace that, a world of tolerance opens, a world of inclusivity opens, but we need to get there."    "I mean food offered me a way to think through my belief in this place, my anger in this place, this place being the South. That's always been the issue for me, and for many Southerners. It's Faulknerian in its roots; like, you love this place, you loathe this place, how do you resolve?"   "For the longest time people have tended to frame the South as a bunker of tradition. This place that was a stronghold against encroachment of new things, new peoples, new ideas. And that's just not true. It never has been true, and it's certainly not true today. So to apprehend Southern cuisine today is to travel to Houston, which I think of as kind of the twenty-first-century creole city of the South. If New Orleans was the nineteenth and twentieth centuries' creole city–small 'c' creole city of the South–Houston is the twenty-first-century creole city of the South. And to sit down at a place like Crawfish & Noodles or various other restaurants in Houston where they're Vietnamese-owned and they're doing Cajun-style crawfish."   I hope these morsels entice you to take a listen, because you'll discover even tastier stuff. You'll be glad you did. I promise.
