Prior to brain-wrangling athletes full time, he was a Professor of Behavioral Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and a Professor of Sport & Exercise Psychology at San Diego State University.   In this Episode Simon explains Applied neuroscience: understanding how your brain works and how to (as well as how not to) work with your brain rather than against it. How to build confidence (even if you are not a confident person) How to get out of your comfort zone and learn to embrace the suck. Tips for how athletes can go about improving their psychological and mental skills.   Timestamps   4:56 - Greg and Simon discuss how even after winning an academy award, confidence and self doubt can creep in. Thankfully the mental skills that make you successful in sport can be useful in all facets of life. These are stem cell skills ... 8:09 - Simon describes how as a competitive cyclist, he found a passion for psychology. His journey to study the science of the mind and understand how and why we do the things we do. What you think has a direct impact on your physiology 12:52 - Simon grew up in Zambia, Africa, and in different parts of the UK. His travelling childhood was spent obsessively playing soccer, rugby, and tennis, before finding competitive cycling. He started training and racing at age 12 and never really stopped. As his dreams of becoming a professional cyclist faded, he decided to study sports science instead. This led to rather lengthy collection of degrees that simply proved with science why “Simon” and “professional athlete” were destined never to be used in the same sentence. Sport is a failure based business 17:54 - Greg and Simon discuss how vulnerability can be a fuel for confidence and achievement. Realising that people are constantly plagued by self doubt Simon and Lesley were inspired to write a book about it. 23:55 - Simon breaks the human brain down into three seperate networks, The Chimp, The Professor & The Computer brains. He explains the science behind these three metaphors and how we can apply his teachings to our everyday thinking and life. Letting your 'meat computer' manage things 36:00 - Forming habits by starting with small achievable daily goals can ensure you more forward and stay motivated much more easily. Greg and Simon discuss different methods of calming yourself down. ...'music', is chimp porn ... 45:38 - Connecting breath patterns to send messages to neurons can be as easy as breathing in a certain pattern. Simon demonstrates exactly how to calm yourself within 15seconds. 49:21 - So what are the things you should be thinking about and saying to yourself prior to a significant stressful performance. Oh hold on ... maybe it's what you 'should not' be saying to yourself!? You don't have to feel good to have a good race 1:01:07 - Understanding sub-text with his clinical patients for many years allowed Simon to transition his learnt skills to screenwriting. 1:06:14 - Simon explains what screenwriting story projects he is working on now the release of All Quiet on the Western Front promotion has completed. 1:10:32 - What would you tell your 18-year-old self? 1:11:54 - Who would you want to have dinner with (nonfamily, living or dead)? 1:14:24 - Where do you see yourself in 3 years? 1:16:37 - Interview concludes.   Links Be sure and check out bennettendurance.com Find Greg on social media: Twitter @GregBennett1 Instagram @GregBennettWorld   And follow Simon Marshall linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ohbehavesimonmarshall/ website: https://www.braveheartcoach.com/ book: The Brave Athlete: Calm the F*ck Down and Rise to the Occasion He can be reached at simon@braveheartcoach.com.

Dr. Claire-Marie Roberts shares on PHIT for a Queen why it is important for her athletes to know “They are more than JUST athletes.” Her experience as a swimmer helped her experience sports psychology first hand.   Sports psychology even though she knew was her passion ended up being a second career however her experience as a civil engineer helped her navigate a male-dominated field.   She has created an interdisciplinary approach focusing her efforts on the staff that works with the athletes treating them holistically and compassionately.   Many female athletes felt they had to postpone motherhood until they were done with their athletic career.   Women now are showing that you can come back to sport after having a child.   Society expectations, physical difficulties and no guarantees all make the return to sport difficult for female athletes.   For professional athletes’ pregnancy is treated in the same manner as a doping violation.   There needs to be more education regarding how to get athletes back to sport after giving birth.  The Exercising Female Twitter- @robertscm Women in Sport & Exercise-@WISE_AN     So you know she is legit:   Claire-Marie is a Visiting Research Fellow in Sport & Exercise Psychology. She combines her academic work with her role at  The Premier League, managing Coach, and Football Manager development. Other examples of her roles in high-performance sport involve working with national governing bodies of sport, professional sports teams, individual athletes, their parents, coaches and sports scientists. She has helped prepare a number of athletes and teams for international competitions including the Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games. Her role as a British Olympic Association Psychologist at the London 2012 Olympics was to date, her career highlight.   Her experiences of working with athletes reflect her research interests that include sport neuropsychology (specifically concussion and traumatic brain injury), career transitions in elite sport, visual behavior in sport performance and women in sport. She specializes in working with elite adolescent athletes and their parents and is one of the U.K.'s first sport psychology specialists trained to deliver Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.   Claire-Marie is a non-executive board director of UK Anti-Doping, founder of the Women in Sport Academic Network (WISEAN), a member of the Women in Sport Research Action Group, a TASS Registered Psychologist and STEM Ambassador.

In this discussion, we cover personal journeying, changing behavioral processes, Jiu Jitsu and where we are headed as a collective consciousness. 3 Key Points: Psychedelics can be a helpful tool for personal journey work. Each type of psychedelic works as its own tool. They are all useful in their own context and should not be compared to each other as better or worse. Shane has used psychedelic therapy to help rewire past imprinted constructs of his mind to learn new behaviors in his Jiu Jitsu practice and his daily life. Navigating Psychedelics Show Notes Using Psychedelics for personal journey work How we can enhance growth using these substances Big journey work sessions bring large insights “Recently, I’ve been working on softening my hard edges” Construct – the scared child. Our childhood leaves imprints that effect our behavior as adults. Hyper-masculinity is a result of repressing past issues. Are there different messages after a journey in ketamine versus peyote? Substances produce a different feeling as if there is an “other” or “entity” that sends the messages where with breathwork it’s more of a self realization Drug chauvanism “my drug is better than your drug” “Is lsd worse than mushrooms for spiritual development? Or breathwork? We can’t say yes or no definitively.” -Joe Stan Grof – “why would you do breathwork if you have lsd?” “There is something special about the group work process in breathwork, that deeper sense of connection is hugely valuable.” -Joe Some substances are better when done alone in some circumstances, and substances used in a community setting as better for different circumstances. We have a choice in which tool “You can’t build a house with just a hammer. If lsd is a hammer and ketamine is a saw, you can’t say a hammer is better than a saw, they are both essential.” Ketamine in Fort Collins, CO Dr. Scott Shannon Shane Therapist, making great changes but small changes, looking to make a greater impact through social work, helping people to better themselves. Two minds interacting, sharing knowledge, sharing distress, sharing solution, and adding the sum of the two parts coming together, and sharing it with the collective mind.” - Shane on the purpose behind his podcast Guests on the show How psychedelics help in jiu jitsu PhD credential people PTSD patients Advice from Stan Grof 30-60 days without alcohol is needed before using Breathwork for therapy when treating alcoholism Analogy – default brain behavior like sledding down a hill, we always choose the same route. With psychedelics, it helps us see a new route. You stand up, and for the first time, you look up and take a 360 degree turn and see so many new routes that you have the choice to take. Analogy used to reprocesses trauma, brings new options to think about the experience differently Microdosing helps bring out new patterns of behavior to learn new skills “In wrestling, the last place you want to be is on your back, that’s when you get pinned, that’s when you lose a match. In jiu jitsu, being in your back is a good place to be, because there’s a lot of options from there. So I had to unlearn the fear of being on my back. It’s all about retraining my neural pathways, retraining my thinking.” -Shane Jiu Jitsu It’s been said, earning a black belt is as much time and effort as earning a PhD The transferable skills of Jiu Jitsu can be used in therapy, breathwork and integrating psychedelic experiences. It's high time to dig into another one of the dog-eared books on my shelf - one of those titles that I folded over, highlighted and scribbled in profusely. The book, entitled, "", claims to solve the 13 most common mental conundrums athletes face in their everyday training and in races. It's based on the idea that you don’t have one brain - you have three; your ancient Chimp brain that keeps you alive, your modern Professor brain that navigates the civilized world, and your Computer brain that runs your habits (good and bad). They fight for control all the time and that’s when bad things happen; you get crazy nervous before a race, you choke under pressure, you quit when the going gets tough, you make dumb mistakes, you worry about how you look. What if you could stop the thoughts and feelings you don’t want? What if you could feel confident, suffer like a hero, and handle any stress? According to today's podcast guests and the authors of the book - Dr. Simon Marshall and Lesley Paterson - you can indeed take control of your brain so you can train harder, race faster, and better enjoy your sport. Dr. Simon Marshall trains the brains of endurance athletes and fitness enthusiasts to become happier and more mentally tough. He is former Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego and Professor of Exercise Science at San Diego State University where he was Director of the Graduate Program in Sport & Exercise Psychology. He has published over 100 scientific articles on the psychology of exercise and has been cited in the scientific literature over 10,000 times. He has served as invited expert on exercise science for the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Cancer Society. He is currently the Performance Psychologist for the BMC Racing team, an elite WorldTour professional cycling team. As the sherpa-husband of professional triathlete Lesley Paterson, he is the founding member of Team S.H.I.T. (Supportive Husbands in Training), and competes in triathlon or cycling events as the husband of Lesley Paterson. Lesley Paterson is a professional mountain biker, 3-time world champion in off-road triathlon, an Ironman® triathlon champion, endurance coach, and foul-mouthed Scots lassie. Growing up in Scotland, Lesley was the only girl on an all-boys rugby team, which is where she nurtured her love of dirt and dirty words. Banned from the team when puberty struck, she took up cross-country running and triathlon and was soon winning national titles and competing internationally. Lesley founded Braveheart Coaching to train and inspire endurance athletes to compete with passion, toughness, and an unwavering “Braveheart” spirit in overcoming obstacles. Paterson is a trained actress, a screenwriter, and personal trainer to Hollywood actors. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What made Simon and Lesley work on this book together as a dual process...8:45 -What an athletic identity is, and how to form a strong one...12:45 -How to use a self-schema process to build your identity and avoid a damaging "identity mismatch"...20:45 -Why an alter-ego for yourself is one of the most powerful things you can do to form an athletic identity...38:00 -Why rituals seem less and less common in an era of "holding your smartphone for a selfie" before the race...42:30 -Simon and Lesley's best of the best advice for getting through an injury...50:45 -Simon and Lesley's tips for getting outside your comfort zones...1:01:45 -A thumb tapping exercise for increasing your tolerance to pain and getting outside your comfort zone...1:10:15 -And much more! One limitation, however, is the retrospective nature of most current research. Subsequently, the present study examined real-time thought processes of runners recorded during a long-distance run. The think-aloud protocol was used with 10 participants ranging in age from 29 to 52 years old (M = 41.3 years, SD = 7.3). Qualitative analysis of the data identified meaning units, which were grouped into major themes. A final thematic structure revealed three major themes that characterized the participant's thought processes: Pace and Distance, Pain and Discomfort, and Environment. Taken together, the present results extend previous research on running and provide a number of suggestions for sport psychology consultants working with runners.   Author: Duncan Simpson Dr. Duncan Simpson serves as an Assistant Professor in Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology and is the Coordinator of the Undergraduate Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology Program. Across the board everyone was struggling with some sort of pain or discomfort when they started the run.”   “That old saying, never judge a run on its first mile is really true.”   “Recognize the difference between discomfort and pain. Basically, almost every time you go for a run you are going to feel some form of discomfort. It’s part of the experience of running.”   “I think there is a lesson for athletes that discomfort is sometimes part of the process, and for runners it’s a really important part of the process.”
