In this Partnering Leadership episode, host Mahan Tavakoli speaks with clarity expert Steve Woodruff about the importance of clear communication for leaders. As the torrent of digital information competes for our attention, Steve emphasizes how leaders must craft focused messages that cut through the noise. Drawing from decades of consulting experience, Steve shares the core principles from his book "The Point" on transmitting ideas effectively amidst the modern barrage of disruption. He outlines specific techniques like storytelling and analogies that make messages stick in the minds of listeners. With humor and humility, Steve advocates that the starting point begins with self-awareness – leaders first know their own strengths before trying to communicate them. The conversation revolves around neuroscience, explaining why unclear communication fails. This biological filtering system demands that leaders prioritize clarity, first having a clear point themselves. Steve provides thought-provoking ideas on how to sequence messages, using illustrations and examples so others can readily comprehend key concepts.Steve analyzes common communication pitfalls that prevent alignment and action. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with the CEO of Impactiviti/ClarityFuel, Steve Woodruff.Steve Woodruff's work primarily focuses on communication skills in the corporate world, including sales, marketing, training, and leadership development. He emphasizes that effective communication is essential in business and that many people struggle with providing too much information or being vague and confusing.According to Steve, the two main problems in communication are information overload and vagueness. Overwhelming recipients with excessive information can shut down their attention, whether it's through lengthy emails or rambling presentations. On the other hand, being vague and using jargon or technical terms can also lead to confusion. Many people, especially those new to marketing, may struggle with communication because it's not their primary skill set. Steve agrees and emphasizes that less is more when it comes to communication. He reveals that our brains process 11 million bits of information per second, but we can only focus on 60 bits simultaneously. Therefore, the competition for attention is fierce, and getting to the point quickly is crucial.Steve emphasizes the significance of having a clear and concise message that will stick in the minds of others. He refers to this as a "memory dart," a precise and memorable description that can easily be referred to. He suggests moving away from the term "elevator pitch" as it implies a forced and salesy approach. Instead, he advocates for using a word picture that captures the essence of what you offer, such as comparing oneself to the "Mercedes of podcasters for entrepreneurs."Key Points from the Episode:Importance of clear communication in various formsProblems of information overload and vagueness in communicationLess is more in communication, getting to the point quicklyApplying principles of clear communication in workshops and keynotesCreating a memorable and concise message ("memory dart")Moving away from the term "elevator pitch"Using word pictures to capture the essence of what you offerWrapping up offerings into something tight and memorableImportance of clarity for others to remember and refer to youAbout Steve Woodruff:Steve Woodruff, often called the "King of Clarity," boasts an impressive 37-year sales, marketing, consulting, and entrepreneurship career. The Point: How to Win with Clarity-Fueled Communications by Steve Woodruff About the Book: Is it possible to grab an audience's attention in this noisy, confusing world? According to Steven Woodruff, the solution can be summed up in a word: clarity. Clarity-fueled communication is the practice of using the fewest words to make the biggest impact. The Point unveils how the overloaded human brain wants information packaged, and how to craft brain-friendly messages that break through the noise. From email to sales pitches, from workshops to resumes, Steven Woodruff's Clarity Fuel Formula is the universal recipe for communications success. The Point includes four simple actions and eight compelling shortcuts that can be used by anyone to get to the point and get others on the same page. About the Author: Steve Woodruff is known as the King of Clarity. He is a consultant and author who has helped solo consultants to Fortune 100 pharmaceutical companies - with their communications strategy and messaging. Over more than four decades, Steve has taught, sold, presented, preached, marketed, blogged, authored, collaborated, coached, and networked... and at the core of every one of those activities is figuring out how to communicate clearly and effectively. Did you know that Netflix is also a gaming platform now? That Apple make TV shows? That Disney own a number of YouTube channels without the Disney branding? It's because they know what Steve Woodruff knows. If you're a podcaster, you might think the competition is other podcasters. If you make movies, you might think the competition is another movie. You'd be wrong. See, what Netflix, Apple, Disney, and Steve know, is that the competition is everything. People are assaulted every day by stimuli, and if you want to cut through all of the noise, you need to stand out by being an effective communication designer. And there's no better person to tell us how to do that than the King of Clarity himself. Plus, in the PRO show, we talk about using AI to write books, and Steve's process for writing his latest book, The Point. Top Takeaways The average American spends 7-10 hours per day in front of a screen. On top of that, we see 4,000-10,000 ads every day. In other words, there is a lot of stuff competing for our attention. You want to be pigeonholed! Instead of an “Elevator Pitch,” which sounds stuff and outdated, Steve prefers the term “Memory Dart.” What's one sentence you can say to people so they know exactly what you do? If you're not communicating clearly to an outsider, you're not communicating clearly. You want to make sure your copy (website, LinkedIn profile, Twitter) makes sense to people who don't know your work well. Show Notes Steve Woodruff Steve in Linkedin Want to be a Better Speaker? What does it mean to find clarity in your life and your business? Steve Woodruff, the King of Clarity, joins me to discuss just that. You won’t want to miss his valuable pieces of information on why you should find clarity and how. Steve has spent the last 30 years helping businesses, small and large, to get on the same page with their message both internally and externally. There are five questions that many companies don’t take the time to ask themselves about what they do, who they do it for, how they do it, and why. One of his biggest dreams is that all companies start asking and answering these questions at the C-suite level, or the top of their organization. Once your leadership is clear on the company message, it can be filtered down to every employee. When everyone is on the same page, your clients and customers will always feel that the message they receive is consistent. If you have no idea where to start, think first about what it is you want to do. You cannot find clarity with your message if your offer or your service isn’t clear. You cannot be heard if you don’t know what you should be known for. People can’t refer you to others if they’re not sure what you do. Listen in to hear all of Steve’s wonderful advice. Then start answering the five questions for yourself and your business. Let us know if answering those questions helps you to see your own message more clearly. Today it's my honor to have a new acquaintance on the show with me. Steve Woodruff has a really interesting title. He is known as the “King of Clarity.” If your organization needs some guidance on getting through all of the “noise” that is out there, this is the episode for you! BREAK THROUGH THE GRAY MATTER OVERLOAD We live in an age of information that is everywhere, all the time. Everywhere we turn there is more noise; it is coming from all angles and from companies of all sizes. There is so much out there competing for our attention. So companies are faced with the challenge of breaking through gray matter overload (“GMO”). Steve points out that everyone out there is suffering from GMO, and companies need to find a way to reach their audiences. Does your company have an effective way to cut through all that sensory input and get your message heard? Steve has ways of doing that, and he shares some valuable information in this episode. CLARITY HAS VALUE Steve describes clarity as being characterized by a memory dart, a way of cutting through the clutter and making people understand you. He thinks of the memory dart as “a way to get a message across into people's brains very quickly.” That is important when you consider all of the information people process each day. Clarity has a great deal of value for every organization. How do you effectively get your message across to others? He also discusses the core value of organizational clarity both internal and external to the organization. We all know to prioritize connecting with our customers for branding and growth, but there is also great value to be had internally. After all, it is essential to have everyone on the same page with regards to internal communication, collaboration, networking, branding, and vision. So we also discuss this huge need for internal clarity. Episode Highlights: What a memory dart is and how it can help your business GMO - gray matter overload - what it is and how to cut through it What the human brain reacts to and how even small companies can be competitive “It's not our audience's job to figure us out” - the importance of truly understanding that and moving beyond it The huge need for internal, as well as external, communication and some insight on developing that Keywords to communicate identity and value within an organization The 5 elements on the approach to clarity Referral readiness - what it is and why it's important Until next time, lead well! The King of Clarity, Steve Woodruff Steve Woodruff helps business owners, leaders and others discover their fit if they’re in charge of a business or brand, and are asking these kinds of questions: With all this stuff that we could be doing, where should our strategic focus be? How can we differentiate in the marketplace? Do we have a core message that our customers are grasping and remembering? Steve does this through something he calls Clarity Consulting. He says it's like a combination of personalized strengths-discovery, strategic brainstorming, and targeted branding. The goal is simple: Discover Your Fit. Then, he helps you craft the words that become your verbal business card. Words that lead to the ultimate business advantage – referrals. Sound like a plan for growth? Clarity is: Identity, Focus, Message Every company needs to be crystal-clear on their identity. What's your mission? You vision? Who are you really? #identity Where do you fit in the marketplace? Who do you reach? #focus How do you tell people about what you do and who you are? #message Steve has found that many companies that come to him are lacking in at least one of these areas, more commonly two or three. When you don't know who you are, you don't know who to go after, and you don't know how to say what you do. This work, Steve says, really has to be done by the people running the company. Founders, C-level executives... the leaders of the brand who set the vision. If you don't have the captain of the ship using a compass, you're sunk! "It's a scary thing because you're going to have to say yes to very specific things. Which means you'll say no to a lot." - Steve Woodruff on getting clarity Clarity Leads to a Simple, Memorable Message Steve describes his original consulting gig in the pharma world as the "eHarmony of Pharmaceutical Training." It's a great way to give people a quick picture on who he was. This is the goal of your clarity exercise: get your message to people in a simple-to-understand way. This symbol, or metaphor, is the pinnacle to clarity. It's the most powerful way to portray who you and what you do in a matter of seconds. Take everything you've uncovered, your who, your what, your why... and distill it down into symbolic language. A word picture, an analogy. That's the goal. Navigational Tool to Growth: Your Network of People One of the most powerful tools for navigating your growth you have, and may not even realize, is your network. Steve learned that as his happy clients became his ambassadors, having a clear message helps tremendously in empowering them to help you grow. This network should be full of people you can help, who can help you, and where you can be mutually beneficial when it comes to things you need like input and mental support. "Look beyond your tools and software. It works much better when you have a bunch of sympathetic souls with you." - Steve Woodruff on the importance of a network Sometimes Your Niche Has More to Grow You can't be everything to everyone. Find your niche, and explore it deeply. Steve works in the world of pharma training, which one would think gets tapped out quickly with only a few big players in the industry. What he's found, even in his own work, is that he's "barely scratched the surface." Like many entrepreneurs, Steve faces the risk of shipwrecks due to lack of focus. Some call it shiny object syndrome. He found that over time he'd want to branch out and find clients in other industries. But diluting his message and chasing clients outside of the industry in which he's well known slowed down Steve's growth. Instead, focusing on his niche and digging deep gave him more ideal clients and more business. I'm convinced that one of the keys to success is to have extreme clarity. But clarity can be difficult to define, and even harder to achieve. In our business, many advisors don’t do a thorough enough job defining themselves to an ever-more-crowded marketplace. “We help you achieve your financial goals” might fit well on your website’s masthead. But does a phrase like that really say anything meaningful about who you are as an advisor, what kind of value you bring to the planning process, and who your ideal clients are? To help us all achieve some … well, clarity on these important issues, I sat down with the “King of Clarity.” My guest today is Steve Woodruff, who is in the business of helping people discover their fit and then craft the words that become their verbal business card. He's also the author of a great book called “Clarity Wins: Get Heard, Get Referred.” In our conversation, Steve discusses the five questions he believes all business owners need to ask themselves about their branding and messaging, especially when it comes to your website. And make sure you listen to the whole episode, because at the end we hold some advisor websites up to the King’s clarity standards. Steve’s feedback on the good, the bad, and the ugly of clarity will make you look at your own marketing in a whole new way. (Don’t worry. Names have been disguised to protect the innocent. And the guilty.)

Clarity is more important than we think. It’s an interesting topic because we don’t really talk about it because it has everything to do with the success of our business and our customers, so why don’t we talk about it more? We talk with Steve Woodruff about really understanding who we are and what we deliver and how to articulate that so others can articulate that for us. Steve comes at this topic through the lens of referrals. Imagine that you and I are having coffee together, and I looked across the table at you and said, “Give me a clear summary of what you do in 1-2 sentences” … what would you say? If you would struggle to answer that question, you have a clarity problem. I can relate, because this is an area where I have struggled as well. We're in luck because our guest today shares a massive amount of wisdom and practical tips for getting clarity about your creative work, your business, and your ideal customer, client, or reader. I'm excited to bring you this conversation with Steve Woodruff, who is known as the “King of Clarity.” He helps people find their professional purpose through his Clarity Consulting process. Steve works with businesses as well as individuals in career transition to help them be more effective and discover their fit in the marketplace. He is also the author of the excellent book Clarity Wins: Get Heard, Get Referred. This episode is packed with a ton of amazing information, as you can see from the length of the episode highlights I've listed in the show notes. But just to give you a couple of highlights, you'll learn how to start thinking like a business person, how to determine your ideal customer or client (this applies to authors, not just “business” people), and how to effectively network with people as an introvert. Steve also gives me a mini coaching session and shares his very personal journey through depression. To read the full show notes, visit https://kentsanders.net/clarity.

Back in 2013, I was working with different executives for the Sustainability Leadership Program for Arizona State University. I was one of three speakers and after I was introduced, the executives’ reaction was, “Oh, the soft skills guy!” Little did I know, there was already warfare between technical hard skills and communications soft skills. A recent report from the World Economic Forum revealed the 10 most in-demand skills in business according to LinkedIn. Hitting the top spots are creativity, persuasion, collaboration, adaptability and time management. Apparently, as technology advances, the employers' need for soft skills from their employees also advances. At the core of each of these skills is the ability to tell a clear and concise story. Our guest this week teaches us how to be an emerging, victorious voice in a noisy market by clarifying our message. Steve Woodruff is a professional coach and author of the book, Clarity Wins: Get Heard, Get Referred. He provides consultation services to professionals who need help discovering their perfect fit. Famously known as the King of Clarity, he believes that every business or professional needs focus and clarity of purpose. This is essential to advance in a noisy market. Steve teaches professionals how to have fresh focus and develop clear messaging. His goal is to get your voices heard and emerge. When you are truly heard, you captivate the right audience who will eventually refer you to new opportunities. The great news is that in order to master a critical soft skill, you only need to build on your communication capabilities through storytelling. When you master storytelling, you’re hitting the jackpot in building on one of the most in-demand soft skills in these modern times: communication. Tune in and let’s apply clarity in our messaging and business storytelling. It's hard to come up with a good answer to the question “What do you do?” We want to respond with something that is memorable, that incites conversation, and that can lead to a referral. So how can we find a sentence that does all that? By getting clarity. A clear message travels faster. If you want to create the opportunity for serendipitous referral moments, what you have to offer has to be easy to understand. You have to be able to communicate what you do, for whom you do it, and how you do it, why you do it, and where you do it in a succinct word package. Then you will be able to attract your ideal customer. Often, you need an outside eye to help give you clarity about yourself. To break down this idea further, I've brought on author, speaker, connector, consultant, and “King of Clarity” Steve Woodruff. Steve helps individuals and businesses discover their professional DNA, define their offerings, target their ideal clients, and articulate their differentiating message in less than a day. Clarity is the thing people need the most but it's the hardest to sell. To learn how clarity will make your message “human ready,” download this episode now. THE CLARITY WARRIOR “Get heard, get referred.” - Steve Woodruff Highlights - Not all business is good business. You can't read the label of the jar you're in. None of us can be objective, and it's very helpful to get an outside voice to help you see clearly. If you can get a clear message across to your audience, they will be able to refer you. The goal of clarity is to distill it down to that first moment of truth: what do you do. The second moment of truth is when they refer you to someone else. The “Bullseye Customer” is the exact person who is right for you. “Memory Darts” go directly into the mind of the person you're talking to and stick there. “We're more and more distracted today. There's more and more noise. What hasn't increased is attention.” In our noisy, distracted world, it's harder than ever to get our audience's attention — to say nothing of making sure that they remember and refer us. What we need is clarity of message. This week on the On Brand podcast, I was joined by Steve Woodruff who talked about his new book Clarity Wins. About Steve Woodruff Steve Woodruff is known as the King of Clarity. In a world full of noise and distraction, Steve helps businesses craft a message so clear that they can be heard, remembered, and referred. In over 30 years of business experience, he has consulted with companies ranging from solo startups to Top Five Pharma. You can learn more about him and his work at www.clarityfuel.com. Episode Highlights In a world that's noisy and distracted ... As you can tell from the first few minutes of the podcast, one thing Steve and I both like saying in our best announcer voice is,“In a world ...” However, in a world this noisy, Steve sees one mistake all too often.“People try to say too much. This actually creates confusion. You have to distill it down.” Physician, heal thyself. Steve correctly pointed to our Brand Driven Digital website, noting that our messaging needs more clarity like my author/keynote speaking site has. As it turns out, we're working on that and will have something to share in the months ahead. Why metaphor matters. On my author/speaking site, Steve noted the impact of the line,“The Indiana Jones of Branding and Marketing.” It's especially useful as it's a metaphor.“Metaphors offer short cuts to the memory hooks of the brain.” The Clarity Wins system. Metaphors are just part of Steve's framework. He shared how clarity comes from four key ingredients — statements (clear and concise sentences), stories (that reinforce these statements), snippets (keywords and metadata), and symbols (the aforementioned metaphors). What brand has made Steve smile recently? Steve shared how his adopted hometown of Nashville makes him smile every time he sees the skyline as he descends in a plane returning from a trip. That's a good community brand! To learn more about Steve, check out the book at claritywins.org, connect with The King of Clarity on Facebook, and visit his company website clarityfuel.com. Last month the FDA held a 2-day hearing that began the process of developing guidelines that will regulate how the pharmaceutical industry plays in social media and with online ads. For any enterprise stepping into the social media space is a challenge. However, for companies in highly regulated industries, especially healthcare, the stakes are high to get it “right.” Fard Johnmar, Envision Solutions, and Steve Woodruff, Impactiviti, join Toby to explore this very important issue that will likely not only impact Pharma but healthcare providers in general.
